PIPPA Middleton and James Matthews wed today at a private ceremony in Berkshire, but the
Queen and Prince Philip did not appear to be guests of the lavish event.
There was widespread speculation about whether the Queen and Prince Philip would attend Pippa
Middleton's wedding, dubbed the society event of the year.
Celebrities, sport stars and royals gathered today at St Marks Church in Englefield
to celebrate the marriage of the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge and the wealthy financier
James Matthews.
Prince George and Princess Charlotte played important roles at the ceremony, as a page
boy and a bridesmaid.
Some royal fans were keen to catch a glimpse of the Queen and Prince Philip at the wedding.
Despite the Queen possibly getting an invitation for the wedding, she rarely attends weddings
or funerals.
In 2012 the monarch stunned a newlywed couple when she crashed their wedding at Manchester
town hall.
Although the couple did send an invitation to the Queen, they did not believe that she
would actually go.
Frances Canning said: We never dreamt we would be able to meet her.
When we had our ceremony, the staff asked us to wait for a moment in the corridor and
just a few minutes later the Queen arrived. The Queen also made an exception when in 1965
she attended the funeral of Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
The monarch was pictured at Londons Ivy restaurant for a birthday party last week.
