"His skill set is extremely rare" – Football expert full of praise for one-of-a-kind Naby Keita

Liverpool are still attempting to sign Naby Keita from RB Leipzig this summer, and the midfielder has been hailed as one of a kind.

Keita could become the Reds' most expensive signing in history if he makes the move to Anfield this summer, with the 22-year-old set for talks with Leipzig this week.

Keita is expected to tell his current club that he favours a switch to Liverpool this summer, as Jurgen Klopp tries to nail down one of his major transfer targets.

Not all Reds supporters are familiar with Keita's qualities as a player, but widespread praise for the midfielder should serve to heighten expectations.

Ted Knutson, former Head of Player Analytics for Brentford and Midtjylland, sees him as a special player, and someone who could be a huge success on Merseyside—even for £70 million.

"His skill set is extremely rare, and elite skill sets—especially for all-rounders—tend to command huge transfer fees in football," Knutson told Goal.

"Given his age, production, and fit for that particular style of play, I could easily see a team setting the Bundesliga transfer record right now.

"If he plays regularly, that could certainly feel like good business a couple of years down the line. "There are a lot of good midfielders out there, but none who is quite like Keita.

Speaking about Keita's development in recent years at Red Bull Salzburg and then Leipzig, Knutson discussed his all-round expertise in the middle of the park.

"Naby first showed up as an obviously strong choice in the 2014/15 season where he was probably the best defensive midfielder in Austria," he added.

"A year later, he was the best attacking midfielder, but still had outstanding defensive output, which almost never happens. "The only real question we had was how he would fit into Champions League-level teams from a passing perspective.

"But I'd say he answered all those questions pretty soundly last season, competing in one of the best leagues in Europe.

For Klopp—a relatively cautious manager when it comes to big-money signings—to be willing to spend so much on Keita says a lot about his ability.

If Liverpool can get a deal over the line this summer it will one of their most significant pieces in business in years, as the Reds look to challenge in the Premier League and Champions League in 2017/18.

Venture Capital as a Force for Good | Kat Manalac, Y Combinator - Duration: 17:22.

Awesome.

So it's my great pleasure to introduce to you Kat, who

is a partner at Y Combinator.

She is also Y Combinator's first Director of Outreach.

Before joining Y Combinator, Kat was Chief of Staff

to Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian.

And she also worked for Wired Magazine.

Please welcome Kat.

Hi, everyone.

I'm excited to be here today.

I literally just got off my plane.

So I am Kat Manalac.

I'm a partner at Y Combinator.

And so at YC, I am in charge of a few things.

One is outreach.

And so I helped recruit founders for the program.

I read applications.

I interview founders.

At YC today, we get about 14,000 plus applications per year.

We read through all of them, and then

interview about 500 teams per batch, or 1,000 per year.

And then we fund about 240.

So since we started in 2005, we've

funded about 1,500 startups and 3,000 founders.

So our alumni include Airbnb, Dropbox, Reddit, Twitch.

That's Cruise.

They were a self-driving car company that

was acquired by GM last year.

It's been really exciting.

Because we fund companies across a really wide range

of verticals.

So the largest chunk is B2B enterprise,

followed by consumer software.

But what's been really interesting is, in the past

maybe three years, we've been funding more things

in health care, biotech, energy, even some kind

of space-related companies.

So that's been really exciting.

And being at YC, and reading through

that many applications is a little bit like having access

to a crystal ball.

We get to see what some of the smartest, most creative people

around the world are thinking about right at that moment.

And so someone actually looked at our--

they analyzed the data from eight years of applications,

and compared it to Google Trends,

and found that many of the trends we're seeing--

Google Trends was lagging about one or two years behind.

So we get to see things before they even

reach the public consciousness.

So that is, to me, is one of the most exciting pieces of my job

is seeing a little bit into the future.

But actually today I'm not here to talk about startup trends.

I'm here to talk a little bit more about something personal

that I have been thinking a lot about recently.

So I believe that, as founders and funders of startups,

we have a huge opportunity to impact the future.

And so I wanted to talk a little bit

today about creating a framework for thinking about how we can

use our opportunity for good.

So most of you, I'm sure, I've seen this study

by Stanford that came out in 2015.

It talks about the economic impact of venture capital.

And when this study was published,

it showed that about 43% of the public companies

in the US since 1979 have been venture-backed.

It showed at the time of publishing

that about four million people worked

for venture-backed companies.

So the TL;DR in short here is that VC has a huge impact

on the economy.

But the question I want to ask today

is, what is the cultural impact of VC and startups?

And maybe what is the impact that we want to have?

And so I'll talk a little bit about what

got me started thinking about all this.

I came across a Martin Luther King Jr. quote recently.

And it was from a piece that he wrote when he was 16 years old,

which is incredibly impressive.

He said, "Education, which stops with efficiency,

may prove the greatest menace to society.

The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason,

but with no morals.

We must remember that intelligence is not enough.

Intelligence plus character, that

is the goal of true education."

So think about that for a moment--

gifted with intelligence, but lacking in character,

gifted with reason, but no morals.

I'm sure we can all think of just a few people that

might fit that bill.

And so I'm starting to think about it.

Because I think we're at this critical moment.

Tech is impacting every single thing we do,

from the people we date, to the food we eat, to our elections,

for better or for worse.

And so and tech, I think, might be

what actually ends up ensuring the survival of life

on this planet.

Independence Day, one of my top 10 favorite movies.

And so VC helps fuel the growth of tech.

VC has a say in what gets funded and what grows.

But we're in a moment right now where

we're starting to see what happens when startups, and tech

companies, and VCs optimize for things like engagement

over information, optics over the truth, growth

above all else.

There are high-profile fraud cases, fake news.

Folks in the press and in the public

have been questioning whether our community is one

that they ask, is this a community

with both intelligence and with morals?

So it seemed to me like an appropriate moment

to start thinking about our responsibilities.

And what are our responsibilities

as a community?

Tech and VC have been around for a relatively short amount

of time.

So we're sort of in uncharted waters here.

I started looking at what other industries do

when they take oaths, or where they create codes of ethics.

And doctors have the Hippocratic oath.

And engineers have something called

the Obligation of an Engineer.

But there's no oath for venture capital, none that I could find

that was widely distributed.

So what if there was a venture capital Hippocratic oath?

I thought it would be kind of fun today

to map out what it might look like, or what it might discuss.

So common framework I looked at was one from medical bioethics.

It's a common framework that uses four principles

from Tom Beauchamp and James Childress' book, Principles

of Biomedical Ethics So recognize these

four basic moral principles.

And so if we use that to create a VC Hippocratic oath,

maybe this is what it would look like.

First, it would go over respect for autonomy.

Respect for autonomy in medicine refers

to respecting a patient's right to refuse or choose

their treatment.

It refers to helping the patient make an informed decision.

So physicians have an obligation to create the conditions that

are necessary for their patients to make autonomous choices.

So they educate patients.

They help assuage fears.

They address the fears that might stop their patients

from making good decisions.

So this could apply to us in two ways--

possibly more.

But here are two, respect for founder's authority,

and respect for the user's authority.

So in terms of respecting a founder's authority,

I can only speak from the perspective

of YC and our early-stage funding program.

So at YC, we only have 7% of a company.

And when the founders walk in our doors, we tell them,

we can act as advisers.

We can equip you with the knowledge

that we've gained from seeing hundreds

if not thousands of startups come through our doors.

But in the end, we respect you.

We respect the fact that you are the founder,

and that you will make the decisions that

will shape this company.

You

We might tell them hard truths.

But we'll never bully.

We'll never bullied them into doing something

that we believe is right.

Or we'll never push them into growing

before it's right for them.

So they can take our advice, or they don't have to.

They can drive a company off the cliff.

And there's really nothing we can do about it.

We try to work with people who we believe

can be this intellectual and moral center of the companies

that they are funding.

And we also try to filter for founders

who we believe can take advice well, and work

with a lot of people, take a lot of sources of advice,

but in the end, use all of that advice

to inform their own decision.

It's hard to filter, especially at our stage.

We work with often very young, first-time founders.

And that kind of decision making process and framework

is something you can really learn as you go.

So now if we're applying this respect for autonomy to users,

I think it becomes most relevant right now

when you're starting to think about questions about privacy.

So we all know, for example, that Google Home,

and Amazon Alexa in your house are always listening.

They're always listening.

And sometimes they're recording what you say and saving it.

And should we be freaked out by that?

No not if you're not freaked out by Google and Amazon

logging all of your regular web usage.

But I believe that it is our duty,

as the founders of these companies or the people that

work with them, to let the public know how products work.

So I think it's right for us to show people what the benefits

and risks are.

And so I think we should strive, as companies and people

who advise companies, to help their users

make these informed decisions.

Like, do you want a piece of technology

in your home that does this?

If you do, here are the benefits.

Here are the risks.

This leads me to the second principle, beneficience.

This second principle discussed by this framework

is beneficience, which is an action that is

done for the benefit of others.

In medicine, this means taking actions that serve

the best interest of patients.

And feels pretty straightforward to me.

In our work, it might mean acting

in a way that, not only supports the founders

we fund, and our LPs, but the users of the products

that they're building.

We should think about, what is right for the consumer?

What we are building and funding should,

I think, ideally respect the users--

basically, their right to know the truth,

their right to privacy.

It should respect their intelligence.

Doctors have this obligation to prevent and remove harms.

They also have an obligation to weigh and balance

possible benefits against possible risks.

And that, I think, reminds me of a quote

by the great Dr. Malcolm in Jurassic Park.

He said, "Your scientists were so preoccupied with

whether or not they could, they didn't

stop to think if they should."

This idea of balancing benefits against risks

dovetails really nicely into the third principle,

which is non-maleficence.

The concept is embodied by the phrase, do no harm.

And that might sound a little bit familiar to you.

So one of our partners at Y Combinator, Paul Buchheit,

is the creator of Gmail.

And he's also the inventor of the phrase, don't be evil.

So it has some background already

in tech in Silicon Valley.

But do no harm, I think, is a really tough one.

Because I think it's really impossible

to know what some of the long-term impacts

of our investments will be.

So we, right now, as funders of companies and startups,

VCs have this huge opportunity to accelerate the future

by investing in things like frontier tech.

That's VR, drones, AI, energy, space.

Personally, I'm most excited by those frontier technologies.

But also, it's the hardest to know

with the long-term impact of any of those technologies will be.

I mean, hell, it was hard to know

what the long-term or even short-term

impact of something as simple as Twitter would be.

So in medical practice, there are treatments

that carry a risk of harm.

It's the same with any of our investments.

YC, for example, invested in Cruise Automation,

the self-driving car company I mentioned a little bit earlier.

So there's so much good, I believe,

that will come from self-driving technology.

Traffic accidents will be reduced.

Automotive fatalities, I believe they'll plummet.

And we'll get hours of our commute time

back, which I'm very excited by considering

the influx of traffic that we've been having in the Bay Area.

But what happens to the people whose livelihoods

are intertwined with driving?

There are truck drivers, Uber, and Lyft, delivery people.

What will happen to them?

Well, while we certainly can't know exactly what will happen,

maybe it's our responsibility, as people

who have this insight a little bit of inside into the future,

to make projections, and to help guide others

to think about the problems that most other people might not

be considering yet.

So we know, for example, that in not too many years

there will be self-driving trucks and self-driving cars.

So at this point, is it our responsibility

to call on innovators, and law makers,

and the people in the impacted industries

to let them know what's up, let them know that we're here

to help, and give our advice and feedback on it,

and that they need to start working on solutions now?

They need to start figuring out what is next.

Because if they wait too long, they

will be much larger and more negative implications.

So the last thing discussed by this oath is justice.

In medicine, justice concerns the distribution

of scarce health resources and the decision

of who gets access to them.

And so for us, I think it's clear

that justice concerns who gets access, not only to money,

but who gets access to our time.

The first step, I think, here is being aware,

aware of who pitches to, aware of the channels

that you use to access founders and deal flow,

aware of who you fund.

I think many of us in the past few years

have actually done a better job at gaining

a sense of the landscape understanding,

like getting a better sense of awareness.

So for example, are you aware that there

are major groups of people who aren't getting access to you?

Are there channels you haven't tapped into?

Are there types of people whose companies

you haven't funded yet?

And this is actually a lesson that I've

learned very personally.

So when I started at Y Combinator,

it was a much smaller organization.

And all the growth had happened organically.

So everyone who would apply to YC really

came through two channels.

It was folks that read Hacker News and folks

who were fans and followers of Paul Graham and Jessica

Livingston's writing.

And so back then, part of my job when I started

was to figure out, what populations of people

are not applying to YC, and why?

And so up until about two and a half years ago,

we didn't ask for gender, for example, on our applications.

We did not think it was a relevant question.

But when we started asking for gender,

we realized that only 13% of the people that apply

to Y Combinator are women.

And so that signaled to me that we

needed to figure out how to reach

more women who are building companies and building

products.

And so that's one of the reasons why, for example, we

started hosting the Female Founders Conference.

So I'm a host of that-- it's our fourth year now--

to encourage more women to hear the stories of other women

who are building companies and product.

But I think building awareness is key.

It's a key practice.

And so, for example, it has made me rethink,

what is our firm's--

and any firm's-- sort of stance on hiring women and people

of color, both in leadership positions and at the investing

table?

If you're firm of all men, ask yourselves,

how did this happen and why?

And I know that change does not happen immediately, surely.

But being aware of how and why things are the way

they are, and questioning the status quo,

that is part of our jobs.

Sometimes when I'm bogged down by the day-to-day,

I get sucked into email.

I get sucked into Twitter fights.

I forget what this is all about I forget.

I forget what is the point of this all.

And I don't see the big picture.

I forget how lucky we are that our jobs here

have such wide-ranging impact.

And I forget that we have access to such incredible people.

So I believe that this community can really work together

toward a greater good.

And I hope these four words will help guide me.

Thank you.

What is the Workers Comp Process for Union Members? - Duration: 1:14.

The Workers Compensation Commission does look at all individuals the same.

Whether you're union or not.

That sometimes can be an issue.

Because union members have contracts that denote whether or not they can seek an outside

job.

But the Workers Compensation Commission does not recognize that contract.

And therefore, places the same burdens and responsibilities on that union worker as they

do on non-union workers.

Our firm represents a number of union members.

We're very active in involving the asbestos union, Local 24.

We're very active in representing the elevator folks from the elevator union.

Steamfitters.

Plumbers.

Electricians.

We understand that the union provides certain benefits.

And the Workers Compensation Commission represents certain benefits.

And we also understand that even though they are union members, they still have some obligations

in order to meet their entitlement to workers comp.

So, when we represent union members, we try to collaborate those two factors together

to best support their interest.

involved...plus the fact that you may have to be in the video itself! What a scary

thought that is. And that's probably what stops you from moving ahead with the idea, but

The Top 10 EPIC Benefits From Using Video In Your Business. Now you might

have already checked out some of the local marketing agencies and looked at

and I'm here to tell you that you don't need a digital, or a video, or any

type of marketing agency. Why? Because what you really want is more profitable

business. Is this approach sounding a bit different to what others are saying?

Well so it should because Video Cashflow is different and this approach is

different too. Think of it like this: do people really want to buy a drill

for the sake of having a drill? I know it's a boring subject but the answer is

a resounding "No!". They want a hole in the wall to fix in a picture

hook to hang up a picture frame to enjoy looking at the painting. It's the same

principle with YouTube and video marketing. Do you really want a local

video marketing company because they're local or because you think they might be

able to help? No, you want a local video marketer to get your video in the faces

of hungry traffic to generate the leads that will generate the extra business

profits. To do that your videos must be ranked on page 1 of YouTube and where

possible the video thumbnail images must be ranked on page one of Google. Here's

Planning for Long-term Research Projects - Duration: 3:58.

Hey there Bruins! Here's a quick overview of how to develop a research plan from

your friends at the undergraduate research centers. When engaging in a

research project it's important to develop both long term and short term

goals. Short term goals are process oriented and can be divided into things

that you can do while long term goals are outcome oriented such as publishing

or submitting to a conference. For instance if your long term goal is to

present a poster at undergraduate research week, then your short term goals

may include attending the event to see what other students have done, speaking

to your advisor about submitting, figuring out the deadline for

submissions and working on an abstract to submit. To assess whether or not your

long and short term goals are concrete you can refer to the acronym SMART as a

tool. SMART stands for specific measurable achievable relevant and

timely specific. Ask yourself who is involved in my goal, what do I want to

accomplish, when do I hope to have the project finish and what is its timeframe,

where are the key locations included in the project, why am i pursuing the

project and what are its benefits, and how will I accomplish my goal.

Measurable refers to the data and information associated with your project

and how you will assess whether or not you've actually hit your goals. Ask

yourself how much or how many in relation to your sources data and

analyses and how will I measure whether I've met my goal. Achievable, ask yourself

have I left myself enough time and have I left myself enough resources. Relevant.

How is the goal relevant to your interests, your research and your

academic success? How does this project fit overall into your long-term career

goal. And timely. Ask yourself if your goal is situated within a realistic and

defined time frame. Now that you know about the difference between long and

short term goals and how to use smart as a tool give it a try start by

brainstorming your long-term research project goals and thinking about how

they relate to your research topic or question. Ask yourself what are the steps

that you need to take to go from your research topic to your long-term goals.

Now that you have a research project as well as a long-term goal for your

project you might be thinking, how do I get from my topic to my final long-term

goal? Most research projects can be broken down into a

search process that starts with choosing a topic and developing a research

question. Next researchers find, organize and evaluate sources from which they

draft an argument, map the project and describe its conclusions. While doing

this you'll also be writing and creating the project and going through multiple

revisions before finally presenting the work at a conference or submitting it to

a journal. It's important to keep in mind that the research process is not a

linear process and that you'll often be doing many of these steps simultaneously.

For instance as you're writing you may realize that you come across many

unanswered questions that prompt you to go back and continue reading, analyzing

and evaluating data. Effective research plans anticipate the challenges that may

arise at each stage of the research process. When developing a research

question it's often challenging to figure out how specific or broad to make

that question. When searching for sources you may find a wealth of info that makes

it challenging to evaluate the reliability of those sources and makes

it further challenging to synthesize them with one another. Here are some tips

and strategies to help you out along the way. Divide your research project into

short manageable tasks to accomplish within defined time frames schedule.

Regular meetings with your faculty mentor and come up with a plan for items

to produce for each meeting. For course papers utilize your professors office

hours to get a sense of their expectations for the project and to make

sure that it's on track, schedule regular time to work on your research project

and also schedule writing or research dates with friends or others working on

research. Now that we've addressed common tasks challenges and strategies. Let's

apply this to your project. Looking for help with the next steps come set up an

appointment at the undergraduate research center and talk about your

project today.

Do I Need an Attorney for Workers Comp Medical Benefits? - Duration: 1:38.

In general, the insurance companies will do anything that they believe they can.

And if you don't pursue your rights through the Workers Compensation Commission, they

can do whatever they wish.

If your doctor says that you need back surgery, the insurance company oftentimes will deny

covering your back surgery.

And will justify their denial by hiring a doctor as an independent medical examiner

for the purposes of evaluating your condition.

And seeing whether or not you need the back surgery.

Or whether the back surgery is causally related to your injury at work.

Or perhaps some pre-existing medical condition.

Or some other superseding cause that might have occurred since your work injury.

Successful resolution of hearings for denied medical benefits don't result in large attorney's

fees.

Because there's not a lump sum of money that's being argued over.

It's authorization for medical treatment.

And the Commission recognizes that.

And attorney's fees are very reasonable under those circumstances.

Sometimes as little as $100, regardless of the amount of time that the attorney had to

spend gathering the medical evidence in order to get your treatment authorized.

I'm Olga Villaverde and I'm Amber Milt, welcome to The

Balancing Act!

It's a great day!

We've got great wine, we've got great food, get ready

foodies!

Today we're serving up a full menu of

tasty treats, my BFF here is so happy!

From finding the perfect wine you already have

to sampling the perfect cookie.

Oh my gosh you're speaking to my soul!

You guys know how much I love to eat and

drink, I'm definitely a wine girl.

And these are great!

The strawberry...it smells like strawberries!

There's so many varieties

of these cookies backstage I couldn't help

myself.

You already had a few so moderation is

always key to staying healthy.

We're also going to be taking a look at how

genetics testing is playing a major role

in our health.

Okay and our resident chef

Ralph Pagano is here and he is saucing

it up with some fresh new recipe ideas.

Hey Ralph!

I'm getting saucy in the

kitchen, sweet heat baby!

Let's toast to him, we'll toast to you!

Much more coming up on The Balancing Act.

Starts right now!

[Music] Are you a wine aficionado?

Do you know

what food to pair with that wine?

Well, not all of us are experts, not

me and figuring out what wine to buy

can be so overwhelming.

Well have no fear this

morning we're gonna have so much fun!

Here to help us out, entertaining

expert, my friend Christina Nicholson.

She has some great tips on creating

the perfect pairing.

Good morning, Good

morning Olga!

We're gonna have fun!

We are going to have fun!

We're gonna have wine!

The good news is you don't have to be an expert to do this.

No?

No!

Okay you're going to learn a little bit

you just need to follow some simple

guidelines to match the food with

the wine.

Well if the food is mild you

want to go with a more mild wine.

If the food is flavorful, you choose a

flavorful wine and I brought plenty to

choose from from Mnage Trois.

What?

Mnage Trois Olga.

I said it!

A little risqu this morning.

Fun and flirty!

That means three?

Yes well that's

how the brand started with three grapes

hence the name Mnage Trois.

Well I feel like we need one more

individual here.

Okay can we find somebody?

Yes, I'm going to get my fabulous

photographer Diego.

This poor man.

Oh lucky Diego!

Wait, wait he's from Costa Rica!

You wanna be apart of the

Mnage Trois?

I would love to but, you know I kind of

got to get back behind the camera.

He's dying he's like Olga stop it!

Back behind the camera Diego!

Party pooper!

We'll save a glass for you, Diego!

So, what have you combined for me?

Alright, so let's start with the appetizer.

We're going to

start with the Prosecco and this is the

light wine Italian sparkler made with a

hundred percent glared grapes you can

taste this kind of citrusy, some floral notes,

bright green apple flavor.

Mmmm, very really light.

It goes very well with something sweet and salty,so we paired it

with a smoked salmon bruschetta this

morning.

It's very good!

My red?

Okay red, yes your

red.

You will like this one if you want

something a little richer, you want to go

with the merlot.

This is made with some

blueberries and juicy plums.

It's got some hintsof coconut and sweet

vanilla, and this goes really well with a

cheese tray, some homemade jams and

pickles.

Also light!

It's really good!

Okay so these

two down here?

Okay so we will finish

up with Silk this is the newest red

blend offering, and it also shows the

softer side and just like its name

suggests.

It's very silky and seamless.

It well with some sea bass, mashed

potatoes and mushrooms!

Alright, and

last but not least the desert.

Well let's get one more dinner in there for the steak and fry

fans.

Just some Cabernet Sauvignon!

Alright, so it's great with that,

Wait before we get to

the desserts, how do you compare these

with other wines?

Mnage Trois is fun, flirty, innovative, high

quality- best grapes in California put

into the Mnage Trois wine!

She's ready this

morning!

Alright, desserts!

Desserts, our favorite part

right?

Okay so let's start with midnight,

midnight another richer wine.

Olga right up your alley!

You will like this

one.

Besides your dessert with the molten

chocolate cake and some salted caramel

sauce, and then we're back to white.

And then we end with the Moscato.

Moscato, juicy peach, sweet,

tart, goes great with a citrus dessert

and some ice cream.

Thank you so much!

Cheers!

Cheers to you!

Fabulous, Appreciate your time.

Thank you, for more

information about Mnage Trois wines go to

MnageTroisWines.com or go to our

website thebalancingact.com and now

we're going to commercial Diego, this is for you!

[Music]

[Music] You've heard the phrase an apple

doesn't fall far from the tree, meaning

your reflection of your parents and

your children are a reflection of you

but, it goes much deeper than that to

genetics and the role they play in your

health.

This morning we're examining how simple

lab tests can help improve our health

returning to the show once again is Dr.

Jay Wohlgemuth from Quest Diagnostics

Incorporated!

Good morning, welcome back!

Thanks Olga, so glad to be back!

Alright so the last time we got together

we talked about the importance of

blood work and our health, they both

go hand in hand.

Absolutely, in summary really it's about

proactive health care,knowing what's

going on before it becomes a major

problem so you can intervene and get

better or prevent problems from occurring

in the future.

So today let's take it a

step further Dr. Jay, genetic testing how

important is that?

It has become incredibly

important in today's world.

You may

remember 15 years ago we sequenced the

human genome.

That was fascinating.

fascinating stuff but, it cost us three

billion dollars and several years to do

but these days with the technology we're

now able to generate genetic data on you

and on your cancer, determine your risk

of disease and determine if you have a

genetic disease, and even determine what

therapies may or may not work in you.

So really important information we

can get now from genetic testing!

So how do we

determine if we need a genetic test?

I'm assuming family history is huge.

Family history is a huge driver such as

in Angelina Jolie case.

Perfect example,

right?

Strong family history of breast

cancer in that case she had brachia genes

tested which determine whether you have

a very high risk of breast cancer in

their lifetime.

And with that information

she and others can really prevent breast

cancer from occurring.

So that's one

area, prevention of disease.

The other

would be you have symptoms you have a

problem and maybe you have a genetic

disease and therefore testing would be

indicated to figure it out.

And then

finally like we talked about the use of

genetic testing to determine what

therapies may or may not work in you is

another you know really important area.

And when it comes to quest Diagnostics,

what genetic testings do you have

available?

Well we offer thousands of

tests but increasing a lot of those are genetic

tests.

We do testing for prenatal testing.

I did that.

Okay!

The genetic testing in women to

determine prenatal risk, we do cancer

based testing to determine what therapies will work in a cancer

patient.

We also do genetic testing to determine

risk of breast cancer and other cancers

in the future, and then finally that

genetic testing we talked about around

diagnosing a disease or even a rare

disease to determine what really is

going on in this patient.

And I was

thinking of rare disease now because we

have a series called Behind The Mystery

and we're very proud of it and we

spotlight a lot of rare diseases out

there that people are unaware of.

Assuming with this kind of testing it

could really help so many people that

are misdiagnosed and have no answers.

This is such an important area really

important we call the diagnostic Odyssey.

You have patients and one of them that

I've seen was a girl who went for ten

years to nine or ten different medical

centers.

Misdiagnosed every time?

No diagnosis but major health problems, and her

family spent a million dollars trying

to get to the bottom of it.

And then it turns

out she ended up getting a genetic test

ten years later.

And she finds she found

out that she has a genetic disease the

question was resolved and there was a

treatment for her problem in that case.

So much time, so much money and time, money,

frustration, uncertainty so in that case

it's really valuable to get genetic

testing.

Speaking of money, genetic

testing is becoming more affordable

today?

Absolutely it's not three billion dollars anymore that's

for sure!

That's a big difference!

Right, so over the last

fifteen years the technologies improved

greatly so it's much more affordable

than it was previously and now we're

able to offer genetics to the community

and in an affordable way.

And how is

genetic testing done?

Let's say somebody

says I'm going to do it.

Well usually

what would happen is your your physician

would talk with you about the genetic

testing and often a genetic counselor

would get involved to help you and the

doctor determine what testing is needed

and what you're going to do with the

information, but then once you've

determined that it's as simple as a

blood test or a saliva sample which you

then send into the laboratory and we do

the genetic testing, the results come back and the doctor and

genetic counselor help you understand

you know what to do with the information.

And ultimately maybe save your life

and maybe even your children's in

the future.

Hopefully so, absolutely.

Thank you so much, great stuff

Appreciate your time.

You're coming

back next time to talk about personalized medicine.

I'll be back!

Excellent, thank you Dr. Wohlgemuth and if you'd

like to learn more about this and

genetic testing you can go to the

website its very easy, questdiagnostics.com/patients

again do that /patients.

It'll get you right there or just go to our website

Here's Olga with advice from Affinity on

making the process of homeownership as

easy as one, two, three.

We are talking

mortgage 101 this morning, and with me

are John Alexander and David Villarreal

joining us for our mini-series and

it's sponsored by affinity partnerships.

Today we're talking reverse mortgages.

Good morning!

Good morning to you, thanks

for being here again!

So you know I've

heard so much about reverse mortgages

there's so much confusion sometimes, what

is it?

Well reverse mortgages in a simple

way is a loan that's placed upon a home

that one owns, that has sufficient equity

and that equity can be used and tapped

for purposes of whatever need you may

have.

It's not limited in terms of how

that money is spent so I think it's a

great tool for people who need financial

planning.

And how exactly does it work,

keep it simple?

It really is, it's an

easy method to access the equity in your

home you spend your life building up and

paying those mortgage payments and now

you want to be able to access.

This is a way for individual 62 years of

age or older to access that and use that

money for whatever they feel like and it's

a safe thing to do and remember you

know not giving up your title, you're not

giving up ownership it's something you

continue to own and you'll be able to use

the value that you put into your

home for your own personal use.

And who qualifies,

is it just 62 and older?

Is that it?

Well that is the benchmark 62 is a

required age of a homeowner to

qualify. There's other conditions but that your

mortgage professional can work with you

on but you also need to know that this

type of loan has certain tools to it

that a mortgage professional must

complete and it protects the borrower.

And quickly so

if I have a reverse mortgage on my house

how do I receive payments?

There are a

couple ways you can either take it as a

lump sum you can have a variety of lump

sum and monthly payments but the good

part about it is you never have to pay

another mortgage payment again.

It's automatically paid off, so you

can just move forward and extract the

equity that's in your home.

Lots of options,lots

of possible options.

Again, great

information- great mortgage tips, we're

going to see you again for more in the

future.

Thank you gentlemen!

Thank you and if you'd like to learn more

about reverse mortgages you can just

go to site USAreverse.com, That's

[Music] Okay so amp up your DIY game

with creative ideas using

store-bought cookies as party favors, hostess

gifts, and over-the-top dessert bars!

Here to show is how you could take

cookies to the next level is the marketing

director for Voortman Bakery Maureen

Pharand.

Good morning!

Good morning!

Thanks for being

here!

Alright, so I have a fun fact for

you that, can I read it to my viewers?

For sure!

I'm not sure you know this, but listen to

this.

The average American will eat

19,000 cookies in their lifetime!

19,000!

Wow!

That doesn't surprise me Voortman

Cookies has been around since 1951 so

we've been baking cookies for a long

time!

And you have some special Voortman

cookies for me this morning, don't you?

- Yeah we do!

We have a bunch of great DIY ideas for

gifting and just hosting parties at your

house.

I am the worst when it comes to

creativity so you're going to help me

with this do-it-yourself because my

creativity is zero.

Talk about what we

have here.

Let's start here, this is

what's considered today like a cookie

bar?

Yeah it's really becoming a fad, yeah it is

and you see it a lot of weddings and

special events right now you can bring

that right into your home and just you

know get some nice store-bought Voortman

Cookies and fill up some wonderful jars

with presentations of cookies with

ribbons on it.

Then there you have our

coconut cookies it's one of our top

sellers, we use real shredded coconut in those

cookies.

We have our vanilla wafers again

real vanilla in there as well as our

oatmeal raisin cookies using whole

grain oats.

And this one here?

That's our fudge stripe oatmeal cookie

dough Oh, Fabulous!

And of course our traditional

chocolate chip cookie.

Alright, what's this?

This is a kind of fun spin on your milk

and cookies, so just glam it up a

little bit use a martini jar, put your milk

and and a cookie on the end.

That's for the

grown-ups!

And then for kids you know you

have your hot chocolate that you put a

cookie on top with a fun little straw

and that you know, it gives a lot of fun

for your kids as well.

Speaking of kids

when I was a kid I ate a lot of these

wafers!

Chocolate?

Yeah.

And this is?

This is our strawberry wafer.

We use real strawberries in our wafers and

if you could just smell it they smell

fantastic!

Oh my Gosh!

I wish my viewers could, it smells fantastic!!

it smells like real strawberries!

It is real strawberries in there!

We use all natural ingredients no

artificial colors or flavors and no high

fructose corn syrup.

Excellent!

And this is cute, you know-little

gifts!

Yeah this is a great way,you know for

party favors, hostess gifts, etc.

You can really make them at home and just you know glam them

up a little bit with your

store-bought cookies.

So you know you can just use a

box with some ribbon, you can get a mason

jar fill it up put a straw in it just

sort of a little fun way that you make

them come to life.

You know just find some ribbon in your

house and tissue paper and old mason jar

and away you go!

Great!

Ya know this is very economical way and

it's just a really fancy way to bring

some cookies to your friends and family

Well a friend of mine actually gave me one of these

the other day.

In fact, she's sitting

right there.

My producer!

Leigh, come here!

This is my producer she had her 50th

birthday the other day!

She did a cookie bar like this!

I did do a cookie bar like that, it

was a huge hit!

Yeah!

And everybody loved it they're

all going to copy me now at all the

parties!

But I also did the mason jars.

I bought a couple of cases.

Economical!

And everybody left with a little package

of the cookies just like this with a

small glass of milk with them So you turned 50 the other day, is

that okay that I said that?

Yes 50!

So when I turn 50 will you do this for me?

Yes in ten years- ten years I'll do the

for you!

Alight I'm going back to work now!

Go back to work let's get back to work

here!

Maureen, you know I love what this is

becoming you know just more of a trend

where people are having more fun.

Yeah!

And and also this is something that you

can even take to people when you go to

their houses sometimes you wonder, wine,

cheese.

You know they're like homemade

cookies that you buy them at the store

they've got all the great ingredients, we

at Voortman make our cookies to order so we

never store them in a factory they go

straight to the store so you can guarantee that you have fresh

cookies!

Which is your favorite?

I love oatmeal

chocolate chip,actually I don't think I

see it on here but oatmeal raisin is

definitely one of my favorites!

Okay I'm going to give you one and want

to guess which one's mine?

I would say the

strawberry one.

Absolutely,this smells

exactly like a strawberry!

Thank you so

much,appreciate your time!

Thank you!

Oh my goodness mmm!!

Thank you, have a great

morning!

And for more information on any

of these ideas seen here today go to

Voortman- this is really good!

Voortman.com or go to our website

thebalancingact.com Fresh!

Very fresh!

So Amber have you ever been called

saucy?

I think I'm a little bit more

sweet!

Aw, you're saucy!

No I'm sour,

you know I get fired up about a new

recipe or a new sauce that can spice up a meal!

Oh you know my husband loves to add

a little sauce and spice to make things

hot in the kitchen and to make your meals just

right!

Now where are we going with this?

You know chef Ralph is here to save me, he's

also got some awesome recipe ideas so

sauce up everyone!

Caliente!

Journey across the globe or at least

into the kitchen and give your favorite

recipes an authentic Southeast Asian

flavor!

I'm chef Ralph Pagano and today I'll be

showing you a flavorful condiment and

marinade that adds both sweetness

and heat to all your meals!

Let's get started!

Full disclosure I

absolutely am in love with Maggie sweet

chili sauce!

It works on just about everything, it is

an absolute staple in my cupboard and it

has been for as long as I can remember.

I'm going to get one of my simple, easy,

ready to go, dishes ready for you right

now!

And this is a beef lettuce wrap-

check this out!

So simple, I'm just going to add a

little bit of oil into my wok.

Now if you don't got a wok, no sweat

you could do this on your regular stove

top with a pan but I'm fancy I got a wok.

In it, i'm going to get some sliced top

around right here.

London broil, any kind of

beef will work just pop it right into

the oil.

Put it away from you when you do

it.

I like these big pieces of scallion, I'm

going to hold these off later, I'm going

to put it into my recipe.

Nice to take it

around to this beef, I add onions, nice

and easy, fresh garlic and stir it around.

We will let the heat take over right

here, letting this meat cook up a little

bit.

I got my onions and garlic so I'm

going to throw in my green pepper that's

going to give you a little bit of crunch.

And then toss two of these pieces of

scallion.

I'm going to get that really

great rich scallion flavor going on.

It's going to be perfect for this.

Give it a stir around with my fancy

chopsticks and now let's enter the dragon Maggi

sweet chili sauce.

This is going to really

bring this whole dish together and make

it perfect.

My kids love it, my wife loves

it, when I cook this dish my neighbors

come over.

I'm not really a big fan of

them but they come over anyway.

Let the sauce do its magic and then

presto change-o abracadabra!

We've got beef

lettuce wraps right here.

We're going to

top them with some toasted peanuts, fresh

cilantro, and green onions.

They come out

perfect!

Over here on my right, how about

this?

Sauteed chicken and papaya with sweet

chili sauce?

So cool, so great so

flavorful, and in the springtime in the

summertime it's so good to eat cool!

How about this, sticky ribs!

Do you like

sticky ribs?

A little macaroni and cheese

and some cabbage slaw?

It's absolutely

incredible!

Here's what I want you to do

head to Nestleusa.com or our website

thebalancingact.com and get more info

about the Maggi sweet chili sauce.

Remember this has been a quick byte!

Get over here lettuce wrap!

But chew slowly!
