So why you started to make a Tesla Powerwall? We can start from there...

things got so complicated for me.
I started to watch lots of videos about this
What are the ues-cases of this powerwall?
What other people doing with it?
for example a man have made a VW bus with this...
he replaced the oil engine with an electric one
and he had made an electric car
I whatched videos about them.
I have whatched the original tesla powerwall videos
by the way it listing price about...
$6.000 for USA
There is no sales in Turkey yet.
There is no support either.

but,
The original motivation here is
comes from lots of sources
for example we don't have a recycling culture
can we develop this culture somehow?
For example the recycling process of batteries is very hard
especially in Turkey we don't have...
a serious process.
so we are throwing our laptop batteries because it is dead
actually these batteries are 90% healty
- so we must not throw heaty batteries to the gargabe can
- Yeah that is rigth
and there is so much potential of this project
by the way. I must explain what is this Tesla Powerwall
Tesla has founded a battery factory with Panasonic
With this partnership they came up with Gigafactory project
Yeah. and this is my unfinished Powerwall battert pack - It is not filled yet

in this factory Tesla produces batteries
If I show you...
these came from inside of a laptop battery.
In every laptop battery, there are minimum
4 and maximum 8 of them
and if one of the becomes dead. the hole laptop battery becomes dead
and there is a little protection mechanism inside of each battery
for example if the temperature rises over 65 celcius...
li-on batteries have an explosion habit :)
just because of that, before the teperature rises to 65 degree celcius
above the each battery there is a protection mechanism
that cuts the circuit from the battery
and the battery becomes useless...
this is a protection mechanism
but one of the batteries' protection mechanism...
or let's say "fuse" gets hot,
this laptop battery becomes useless
while the other 7 batteries has no damege
and we are throwing away this battery just because of the one battery dead
now...
I have shared something about this on facebook...
I said send me your dead batteries to give them a second chance
and I added we will pay the shipment

I continuned searching internet for second hand and dead laptop batteries
actually I have found promising results
for example I have met with a computer shop owner
and he was collecting laptop batteries
I purchased about 55 laptop batteries with a reasinoble price
and I am destructing them
after destruction I extract these batteries
I am testing each of them
testing about if they are working properly
and it is very interesing and how can I put this...
the results are very promising and
nearly 90% of them working properly
and they can hold enough power
actually everybody have a dead comuper in their house
we are using laptops now and
selling or throwing away their batteries is very common
now
generally they throwing away to the gargabe can
for example about recycling
in Europe, I dont' remember the country but...
as far as I remember they started a campaign
in streets there are plastic bottle recycling machines
when you put plastic bottle into the machine...
the machine gives you money as a return
actually there must be some machines for recycling
actually there is
but firstly they are not common
and secondly it is very hard to find a recycling boxes in Turkey
-yeah it is harder
yeah it is easier to find a glass recycling boxes.
for paper also...
for example after I graduated from university
at that time there was something .. oh wait after I graduated from high school, pardon me :)
I had university preperation books
and there was more books I collected from other sources
I put them into our car
400 Kg book and paper that I cared
I am saying 400 Kg pardon :)

I filled up the hole trunk with books and paper
and we went ot recycling station
and our the only motivation was not the selling the books
but recycling these papers was a bigger motivation
We went to a local recycler
and I get 11 TL (about $3) at that time
and that was not covered the oil cost
as I said the purpose was not make money out of it
our bigger motivation was recycling
but there must be more money to support recycling
that is another story
but actually I am happy what I did
with my father
whatever, let's go back to our original story

What I want to say is this must not be a personal project
the governments must run this project, I think
recycling you mean?
If government do this more people can get benefit from this project
Now, Lets get back to the real project's motivation -now
yeah, let's talk about Powerwall
That is our maing thing
now, What we were saying... Hmmm I have met a computer shop owner
and I got 55 laptop batteries
and I ordered 100 more, and he will call me when he gets them.
and I am destruction them
another motivation for this project is...
let me put this way
for cheap electricity purposes in Turkey but
the profit that I will get from this project
for home usage with night time charging and day time usage case
can suspanse its expense in 10-20 years
because our electricy bill is low already
we have 180 KWh for last month and this means we have 6 KWh usage in average
we have 20TL (about $7) usage (70 TL with taxes)
I mean I don't get profit from this. there is no meaning for this.
with charging nigth time and using day time
but this is not for profit
firstly I love to make things like that
and I love spending my time for something like this
and secondly
the real potential of this project is
if there is electricy in our wall plugs, that means there is a electricity manifacturing with termic power plant or hydroelectric power plant
besides the general knowlege hydroelectric power plants could be dangerous to the nature
It is not that simple, because then you duild a hydroelectric power plant you have to change the nature habittat and the climate of the area
and this can cause micro-climate effect
and it is bad for the animals those are living that area
or it could be extinction for those animals
it could be because we are changing everything in that area
There is a natural flow of the water, and when we build a hydroelectric power plant
the hummudity of the air is changing and this can cause micro-climate effect
this could be dangerous in so many ways
yes I admit, hydroelectric powerplants are the least dangerous of the convetional electricity production mechanisms

I could be wrong that is another story
it needs a constant energy generation
yeah, if ther is electricty in the wall plug, generation exists
I mean day and night, energy is being generated
and we are not using the night energy and this becomes a waste of resources
It could be a waste and there is more...
if there is a constant energy generation
we have a high tension line around our house
and now it could not be enough for the need of people in Istanbul
especially at the peak hours
in the afternoon between 5 pm and 10 pm
they could not meet the energy need so they had to upgrade the high tension lines
and this means investment for infrastructure of the city
let's think that
for example when you don't need energy
at nigths
you can regulate this energy generation
instead of wasting the unused energy you can store it these batteries
let's assume everyone has such a bunch of batteries
and during the peak hours when you need it
we can generate less energy at the power plants
and we support the power grid with these batteries
now, I am asking
-maybe there will be less power plants will be founded
I think the number of the power plants could not be changed but,
- may be years later
- not about the foundation of the power plant but I could eliminate the upgrade process of high tension lines
The upgrade will be unnecessary
maybe 5 MWh line can support instead of 8 MWh tension line
Our high tension lines have been upgraded few months ago
Maybe this upgrade would be done 10 years later
the old lines could charge these batteries at night and support the power grid at the peak hours
the energy generation would become more predictive
There is something in energy market in Turkey
power grid owner have to report the energy supplier for the tomorrows energy needs prediction for every day
and they are doing this prediction with lots of parameters like holidays
like the last years's same period consumption data
for example the new year nigth is the most enegy consumend day of the year in Turkey
people using electricity untill the sunrise
the most energy needed day for a year
1 January nigth is the black friday for the energy suppliers
the power grid owners had to report tomorow's energy needs to the energy suppliers because the energy generation will be planned
there is a problem with this approach, if they predicted wrongly they have to pay for it
the prediction must meet the consumption needs
If there is sometihng like Powerwall
you don't have to predict the consumtion of tomorrow at that precision.
and it will be easier to make energy generation plans
-stored energy could support the grid
yeah
you will always know hoow much energy being stored at the batteries
you will know when to charge these batteries
and all these can be controlled from a central environment
the energy generation will be regulated
you can generate same amount of energy day and night
at the peak hours you don't need massive high tension lines
instead of generating 5 GWh for the peak hours, you can generate 1 GWh hor every time.
and you can easily predict the energy generation
consumtion statistics can be easily collected and the energy needs could be easily supported from the batteries
and the most powerfull side of this plan is infrastruction costs can be lowered
and secondly
for failures
you can easily get the energy from the batteries and supply energy for the houses
-it is like you have a generator at your home
it is not generator but, it is like UPS
generator generates :)
it's not generating, it's storing
- you are storing and, somehow the wasted energy becomes your friend
you are storing the energy inside the battery and you are using when you needed
I think this is a big and brilliant project
But you cannot do this with this battery pack alone
how many battery capacity for this pack?

we need more, like 400 batteries (cells = 5 packs)
how much storage room needed for this system?
you don't need a big space for this project
-is it like a small refragirator
we are making this battery packs from dead laptop batteries, but
if we make this battery pack from unused batteries, it would be much smaller.
5 packs is not enough for us but, there is enough potential for this project.
for example there will be a maintanace on the power grid, they can easily shutdown the grid ...
and each individual house could get their energy needs from these battery packs
-abslutely
that is one of the most beatiful part of this
and beacuse of these are li-on batteries they can last longer in terms of capacity and life-time
they are not easy-to-breake
and they are safe to use
and for more protection we will build a control circuit to protect our environment
and we will make it smart :)
and we can predict energy consumption and store our energy for further use
li-on batteries known as they are dangerous
they are simply explosives
yes, they can explode but, under certain circumstances
we can think like this is TNT (the explsive one)
it is a bomb at the end...

it is an explosive but, when you set on fire, it simply burns, not expledes
It is just dangerous under certain cicumstances
even it is manifactured as a bomb
We have to control the heat
and we have the control the pressure
easch cell will have their own fuses amd if there something went wrong the fuse will be burn out and the pack will be protected.

and this pack will operate safely
We will charge these packs at night (when the electricity is cheaper)
but this project started to store solar power -yes
and the wind power with turbines
because we are living in a apartment, we cannot use the roof
but I have another project to use wind energy
-and we have a windy place in here
at this point we will use wind power
if every house have these kind of systems we won't have energy issues at the future .
self sufficient houses will be important at the near future
with the solar roofs
and the wind turbines in our next hundered years
100 years is long time
if we don't do anything to change the way we are generating power, the human being will be extinct
Tesla Powerwall is a starting point of a greate project
becauseit is important to use our energy effectively
we have so many thing we have wasted
just because of the wastage of the energy we are trying to generate energy from the nuclear power plants
and there are lots of arguments whether it is safe or not
what I mean we have to reach much more people with these kind of projects

I saw a man who made this Powerwall in a little cabinet out of his house
he get his energy from out of these battery packs
there is fantasy project for me
that project includes to buy a small and cheap car and replace the oil engine with a electric one
but under current circumstandes I can not be able to do that because I have not garage to build such a thing
but in near future I can start this project as well
I got very excited from this project
and I thing you be excited too
these are not just batteries
because these batteries are our future
especially when we throw these bateries to the garbage can
we are demaging the nature
and mixes with the water
which the only drinkable water supplies
don't think of the animals are drinking this water, because you are drinking this water as well
everything we throw avay to the nature, will be back to our ways some how, like a bumerang
it will be mixed with our drinking water and air that we inhale
just think that, the only 3% of the water is drinkable
