this time on Rat and Cat, having trouble finding a place to live.
we've really enjoyed living in Skamania it's such a beautiful area it's fairly remote and
just love it and we hate to be moving on but I really want to be close to my
family my parents are getting older and want to be close to my brother and
sister and the place that I grew up in northeastern Washington and northern
Idaho area and so we are picking up and moving and it's not easy
I thought stinky was doing better but he is not well he is his eyes aren't are
their blue now again not yellow anymore but I was just checking him out he's got
a lot of junk coming out of his eye and also his nose is like cake this
something caked on his nose could be drainage so I'm hurrying down to the vet
it's Friday night they close soon so I've got to get down there and things
have just been really chaotic at our house that's trying to move everything
out and look for a new place and if we were just getting a standard loan with a
regular mortgage it would be a lot easier... a lot more expensive but we're
trying to get a fixer-upper
they're just having lots of trouble buddy give you a little shot
see this goop in your eye.
I already went in it there you go one thing I'm happy about is that
there's this big old giant leaf maple on our property that I always wanted to
mill and I just haven't had the time to and fortunately my wife's cousin has
come up and and my neighbor Brian has been helping him out to mill that up and
that's going to be a big benefit to the new owner of our home as well because it
was just such a massive tree it'd be really expensive for somebody to remove
he will since we're going to be spending at least a month or two here possibly
more living with family it's just gonna be too hard to take care of animals
during that time so my my kids were really upset you know I think they'll
get over it you know talk about getting a a hamster or eventually when we get
our own place we're gonna get a dog I think our kids are refining past that
stage where they're pulling and smashing and mostly past that but it's really
hard I you know I really don't like goats like I said a number of times but
I'd rather have a horse or something like that or horses or I don't know even
a dog we've had dogs before but they you know they've grown in my heart
and after the fire last year when we evacuated them you know they could I
could tell that they were really relieved to see us a coil up a bit and
they'd been there a month so I was kind of surprised by that because they kind
of act like dumb farm animals you know run it run away from me a lot of the
times except for that little Billy doesn't know stinky ol he's just so calm
it's anyhow but you know and I can tell right now they're nervous about getting
in here and going attached to that place where they've been for quite some time
so we're attached to them anyhow I'm really
glad that we're able to give them to our friends Joseph Becca and their kids and
they I know they'll take good care of him and we wanted to repay them after
they helped us with the fire by rewarding them for it was a month maybe
more when we evacuated the fund for the Columbia Gorge fire in 2017 and a lot of
people one of these goats I was surprised people kept on asking even if
they could have him or if we'd sell them and the people who are buying the house
wanted them
we wanted them to go to somebody special I think that's gonna happen you know we
just really appreciate you know you're taking care of the goats when there was
the fire and all of that it was just so huge and you know it just kind of went
by so fast and I still feel really emotional about it I guess or I never
did when it was happening I kind of did but now that it's all happened to be
honestly I don't know why and we weren't even required to evacuate but I'm glad
we did that was really especially with the passing on the other side the river
and the night you know and stopping on our side that was just amazing
or weird grateful and I we always wanted to do something something for you guys
um dinner or something that we just never read necessary out in the
slightest I've been good friends although our paths don't cross a whole
lot it's always good to see you guys what we do
you have told you before there's sort of a comforted you know knowing oh yeah
permits are just 18 minutes away it's sad to think of you guys being there but
I also understand the importance of changes now creating new opportunities
yeah I respect that a lot so I hope it's good
Thanks yeah free she ate a minute yeah we doing handshake or do we do hugging I
was gonna do the handshake yeah I've been wanting to do coffee for a long
time and missing out on that missing that yeah it's just tough to squeeze
everything into life sometimes simultaneously you know kids and coffee
and work and yeah the host of other things that are associated with all
those things it's yeah yeah Wow well it's might been a cakewalk
every every day it's gorgeous here man it's a beautiful piece of property
just taking a quick break here we've been traveling for about oh six hours or
more it takes us forever to travel with the kids and we've got three of us three
vehicles sir travelling together with trailers and it's amazing between
Vancouver and that area down there in southern Washington it's mid 50s when we
left and up here it's 24 degrees and we're headed up to where it's snowed an
interim or tonight and I it's the worst time of year to be moving and we're
really hoping to move a little bit sooner yeah I don't I don't want to be
driving a trailer in the snow but that's what we got to do to make this happen
and I'm really feeling anxious about anxious excited yeah and concerned about
trying to find a place this time of year with our with the budget what we're
working on and the deal is is that we have we're trying to have no mortgage
with the house that were we're going to be buying and it's that's that's tough
I've never bought a house with that in mind because we it was never even an
option but we're coming out with the sale of our last house with less money
than we thought we were going to have and we had some debt from starting up my
business during the recession and my accident and just his life and stuff and
so some of the money that our earnings from our last house
going into that but anyhow we're coming out with $1 that we can put into a house
which as you know is not a lot so we're looking at some really unusual options
for houses and and what to do but we just really like this idea of not having
any debt and always buying ahead rather than paying to the bank's interest
because I think more and more credit and debt is a trap and you know the credit
rates the interest rates that we have nowadays used to be illegal they're so
high and more and more there's fees and high interest rates and just money being
siphoned off from us from the public here in the United States more and more
legalized theft is one way to look at it being an indentured servant is another
way and we're told that we need to work hard just work harder that's the
american to achieve the American dream you know spend spend lots of money or
you know you have to have a certain house that looks a certain way and drive
a certain car and those are just all material items and and that are
perishable I think that's one thing the fire evacuating from the fire last
summer we realize that we only need a certain
amount of things you know and it's just very basic what we need on the other
hand we've got a lot of stuff still there's you know comfort is nice so
we're not sure that a tiny house sort of situation would work for us but we also
want to get out in the situation where we're just paying money out that we
don't need to it work to other people to banks and and
whatever else so it's a challenge though I'm gonna show you some of the houses
that we're looking at tomorrow and not tomorrow this weekend and it's gonna be
interesting especially moving in in November and actually December's would
well we're moving in in November but I don't know worst comes to worst we'll
stay with some relatives in their house which you know at our age I really don't
want to be depending on my parents or my wife's parents for our stability or
housing but you know if we need to we will off into the snow we go
one of the first places that we were looking at is actually one of the best
options it's a small cabin up in the woods it's kind of remote we're excited
to check it out this place is great the cabin needs some work and it is really
small but it could be fixed up and made to be cozy and I guess you could put an
addition on it and it looks like it needs a foundation but there's several
different outbuildings there's all the firewood you could ever want it's on a
creek it doesn't have a well it's getting the water from a creek so that's
a bit of a concern as far as resale value but definitely a good option here
this is a piece of 20 acre almost 20 acre piece of land that we're looking at
that the reelers suggested after the cabin and it's Lots the flat usable land
which we're not really into would be nice I guess but no Creek but not a lot
of features at all but the nice thing is is there's a good variety of trees we
liked and had a good view of the mountains decent view I should say but
they've developed it like a several different people bought it together and
they put in oh yeah some sort of a wolfdog pretty fresh
but they developed it to a group of friends developed it to hunt and so they
bring their camper trailers out here so they've got a bunch of hookups for our
V's then they have these trails around the property and a little garage with a
bathroom in it and a place to wash up
this garage is kind of set up like a tiny home or a place that you could camp
out but it would be difficult to insulate because of the steel structure
in just the way it's built both to be a shop or garage and so wintering out and
this would be difficult well it's still something to think about we'd we'd have
to take out probably a loan to build an actual house on it though the next place
my wife is really excited about it's just over 20 acres has a Creek on the
edge a lot of forest well and sewer but or septic I should say but they're not
hooked up to a tiny house a little cabinets on it what do you think got a
place for each of the kids we could put actually
right here that's where the water is but I don't think that's really where the
water is the water could be anywhere although I guess it drains right there I
like its tiny but look out here porch
yeah it's got quite a bit yeah it's actually cuter than I thought it would
be yeah after looking at this I don't know it's a good option we would have to
probably take out a loan again here to build a house eventually living here
through the winter in this tiny cabin it would be difficult to get the water
hooked up and everything hooked up in time for winter so that would be a
challenge the views not that great so I don't know I'm on the edge about this
one my wife loves the giant garden that it has but I think the the biggest down
or drawback to this that we're looking at is the road up here and in talking
with it about my wife or the about the cabin that we looked at earlier both
these roads would be difficult for our families to get to some of our parents
who might not be all that comfortable in driving in some pretty steep rugged
roads that you could slide 30 or 40 feet off the road if the road was icy so that
they're kind of treacherous to access
metal tub like you did when you were a youngster in a metal tub sure actually
they already have more bad little bit more buzz her sweater yeah it would what
you know if we did them like we were thinking about building a tiny tiny
place but just basically like this smaller probably overlooking a lake
right next to public access to the one other piece of property that I've been
really interested in is overlooking a lake some friends that I grew up with
still own the property behind the lake it's pretty cool because it has partial
views of the lake and a spring on it and some old mines that are collapsed but I
think my wife is not too excited about it it's completely undeveloped so we
would have to start from scratch with electricity water sewer or septic yeah
so it'd be a lot of work next we're going to look at twelve acres which is
from an old dairy which has the original house and barn from the dairy on it oh
yeah
yeah this is what they called a lot longer than of course I think that is a
little creamy here's the breakers here yeah like very old house manufacturing
date is not known it smells like an old old house I don't know you know that
hang on through that that bitter old wood old other stuff every rooms a ton
of work so you going in no seats the floors rotted out of here Kirsten yeah
there's been water damage right there that's leaking there on the ends of the
room there and mice coming in here Oh
stairs mystical stairs where the lights are like their kids alike on down there
what let me just know okay like you to keep
it warm so it doesn't freeze maybe there's a lapse right above you with
that change thinking what we're going to do they're like switch the bottom steps
are broken here oh are you still point looking where you're pointing here
actually point it down here still the
bottom rungs are up no just the bathroom
nope nice broken stairs access the outside oh no not a crutch wait lock
shut with the pain what what is the deal with all this blocked up yeah maybe they
were renting out storage space oh this this is insulated
or right you know because they made it easy to register then they made it easy
to go ahead oh great it comes with a Christmas tree that's awesome we've got
lease the barnwood alone she was telling me is worth more than they're asking for
this property does it be age and this year I'm gonna got your own how nice in
that way I wish they gonna have this go on for us now yeah I love the branches
polio lodgepole pine fir beams
this roof is leaking in a number of places our goal
I don't know I don't know but they had one you know it might have been we all
know it was a girl I think it was look at this vent right here - coming out of
this room I let's see how this yeah up at the top of this - there's a violence
you probably haven't even been out here and it's not no it doesn't smell like no
yeah dudes a mess don't bring the power connector on that
Watson yeah this I don't know oh that's interesting
the whole end drops there the the hayloft door drops
yeah they must have had a hayloft on this end too well here's the Rope comes
all the way down to you yeah oh it was a cherry dairy farm member yes we like
that well you have your mouth - hey I'm monologuing
Napoli knapweed yes
so like the barn but it's got work in order to save it and lots of money tied
up there and asbestos siding at least sighting that needs to be replaced and
possible asbestos likely asbestos in the roof tiles definitely going to be lead
paint so you're looking at totally stripping out the inside of the house is
it worth it my idea is I'd almost rather just build a small new house there's
something about charm with an old place to you know it's pretty picturesque in a
way of course if things have snow on it everything's beautiful snow on whitewash
is in it it's a wild turkey track soon
after looking at this and really concerned about the structure it just
doesn't look sound or all that interesting or worth keeping even I
think we'd have to turn it down and as well as the garage that was used for a
drug operation illegal drugs the well to that it's an open cistern that mice
could and I'm sure just do fall into and die in we'd have to rebuild that the
barn is a huge draw but I am I'm not sure I don't know about this one
up north here there's a lot of lakes and rivers and we've looked at a number of
River properties they're usually small Lots
and my wife has always said no but she found one that she's particularly
excited about it's a old a-frame right on the river
all right so this a frame is completely unfinished on the inside it's never been
plums there's no electricity in it right now looks like they just had a maybe a
50 amp hookup so it may take a lot of work it's an amazing view and I would
really enjoy living on the river that would be kind of a dream of mine but I
really hadn't taken that seriously I've just envisioned myself having a courage
you know to have animals one of our goals is to live in a place where we're
living more in nature where it feels like the house is part of the
surrounding the wilderness around you that the forest and I have to say this
is this is really attractive and looking at these different homes really kind of
helped us formulate what we're looking towards and because we've had to get rid
of the goats for now we are realizing the time that it's taking this to take
care of those goats and even the chickens and hopefully we'll get some
chickens again sometime but we wanted to be spending more time outside where
we're actually our home is partially outside if somehow that's the ideal I we
don't know quite how that would work but more time traveling on vacations with
our family spending time in the woods with the family and just having
adventures and less time working unfortunately each of these houses are
going to take a lot of work so that kind of is a problem there too but at least
we'll have more time to focus on getting that place to live and less time on the
animals but let us know what you think in the comments below
certainly I want to keep doing rat cat as much as possible looking for missing
people I've had a brief conversation with the outgoing sheriff here and I'm
looking forward to trying to get into the search-and-rescue team here locally
again and at least continuing on searching for missing people and I'll
head back to Skamania some for that as well probably next summer a little bit
let me know in the comments below what do you think about these different
places where you live have you compromised for the house that you're
living in are you are you living in your ideal home or would you rather be living
someplace else what would you sacrifice to live in your house are you paying a
big mortgage do you like that do you think that's that's best for you or
would you rather move out and get away into some rural community where the
housing is cheap and life is hard maybe a little harder I don't know leave
the comments below thank you patreon supporters so much and viewers for
watching here on YouTube and I hope you guys are gonna have a Merry Christmas
because I'm hoping to get this video out before Christmas and we'll look forward
to seeing you in the new year if not beforehand have a happy new year and a
Merry Christmas
