Real Reason for Hasty Flynn Charges: Mueller Has to Justify Expenses Next Week
Special counsel Robert Muellers investigation has plodded along for six months now with little to show for it,.
save a few indictments of low-level marginal players for process violations and former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort for legal violations that allegedly took place long before he joined the Trump effort.
The lack of any major public developments in Muellers probe had led some to begin wondering if there was anything of importance to be found at all, and how much longer Muellers team should be permitted to keep digging.
That seemed to change on Friday, though, as Fox News reported that former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn had pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI as part of a deal with Mueller.
According to Fox, Flynn agreed to cooperate with Muellers investigation and admitted to having been directed during the presidential transition period to speak with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak about economic sanctions and a United Nations Security Council vote — topics he had initially denied having discussed.
It is worth noting that the same conversation Flynn has admitted to lying to the FBI about are the same ones he admitted he lied to Vice President Mike Pence about,.
leading to Flynns resignation from the administration in February, as was pointed out by White House attorney Ty Cobb.
"The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year, stated Cobb.
Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr Flynn.".
Of course, Democrats and the media are crowing Weve got Trump now! as if Flynns guilty plea is a huge deal, when really it is little more than a technicality for which Flynn will receive what amounts to a slap on the wrist.
According to The New York Times, the penalty is a fine of $500 to $9,500 and up to six months in prison. Critics of the investigation werent impressed.
Interestingly, the timing of this announcement of a guilty plea deal by Flynn came just days prior to the release of the first expense report for Muellers investigation by the Justice Department, according to a report on Thursday from The Hill.
That public report — which will be forwarded to Congress next week — will show how much Muellers probe has cost taxpayers thus far.
There is little doubt that some will question any further expenditures on behalf of Muellers team, given the apparent limited success he has had thus far in uncovering potential Russian interference in the election to assist then-candidate Trumps campaign.
However, with the sudden announcement of a guilty plea from Flynn right before the expense report is released,.
it gives the appearance to those who want the investigation to continue that Mueller is indeed making progress, which will likely keep his funding safe for the next six months.
Democrats and their allies in the media will cite the guilty plea from Flynn as proof that Mueller needs more time to investigate further, and will fight tooth and nail against any effort by congressional Republicans to curtail Muellers funding.
Not that there are really any great number of Republicans chomping at the bit to end Muellers probe.
Some have gone public trying to stop it, but more than a few seem content to let it run its course, wherever it may end up.
As for Flynns guilty plea, it quite possibly had more to do with saving himself continued emotional and financial stress in a potentially protracted legal battle, and less to do with an alleged flip against the president and his team.
