Jose Mourinho: This is the main reason for Romelu Lukaku's poor form
Romelu Lukaku has been struggling in front of goal in recent weeks and the Belgian forward's record of only scoring four goals in his last 19 appearances is certainly not very impressive.
This return is very poor especially considering the early season form when Lukaku had scored 11 goals in just 10 games.
As a result of this lack of goals from Lukaku, manager Jose Mourinho has been asked multiple times regarding the reasons for this slump and recently, the Portuguese tactician has told reporters that fatigue is to be blamed for the Belgian's failures over the past few months.
Mourinho told reporters, "Is he unlucky in our box in recent matches? He was in the picture, was not a direct influence on just him, but he was in the picture in some of the last goals we concede, but it is a consequence of a player that really needs a little rest.
But the guy is fantastic for me and for the team and gives absolutely everything and I've no [criticism].".
Despite such poor form, Lukaku has not been dropped or rested to recover from fatigue and Mourinho explained that he keeps on persisting with the striker as United simply do not have enough depth in the position.
Mourinho continued when revealing why he does not drop Lukaku, "No, I can't. First of all, people don't have to be grateful to Romelu. I have to be, not you, not the supporters, not theew pundits. I have to be.
"I think for a striker, any player, he's absolutely incredible, but if you are a central defender, a holding midfield player, where you can control your energy, positional play, you can resist, survive.
But for a striker to play 20 matches in the Premier League, 90 minutes, I have to be grateful.
Lukaku was the big money signing of the summer for Manchester United and the Red Devils will hope that their expensive striker will be able to get back to scoring goals as soon as possible in order to see dividends from their investment.
