The distance between the upper lip and the nose for breathing (Feldenkrais ATM) - Duration: 8:22.Are you ready to participate in a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lesson?
The title of this lesson is, The distance between the upper lip and the
nose for breathing.
By the way, if you'd like to have a quick look at the lesson in advance, click the white-circled
"i" icon at the upper right corner.
Otherwise, let's begin the lesson.
Lie on the back please.
Elongate legs and arms.
You may stand legs if that's more comfortable.
Feel how you breathe now?
Feel when you stop inhaling?
Feel when you stop exhaling?
Pay attention to the chest and the stomach.
Which of them is more lifted or become bigger when you inhale?
Is it the chest area?
Or the stomach area blows up when you inhale?
Continue to breathe as usual.
Don't breathe too much.
Just breathe as usual.
Now, place a hand, the palm of the left hand on the stomach and the other hand on the chest.
And continue to breathe.
Breathe to feel how much the hand moves up and down.
I'd like you to find out the area that moves the most as you breathe.
Remove the right hand from the chest.
Place the left hand either on the stomach or on the chest, whichever you feel that moves
the most.
Now, place a finger of the right hand on the upper lip, the area between the upper lip
and the nose.
Try to raise the lip closer to the nose and return it to the beginning position many times.
This is not like a curling the lip as you see in the video.
You are shortening the distance between the upper lip and the nose.
Pay attention to the relation between the distance and the breathing.
Do you shorten the the distance when you breathe in?
Or when you breathe out?
Now shorten the distance as you inhale.
And return it as you exhale.
Like this continue the breathing and shortening the distance.
Try it the other way around.
That means to shorten the distance as you exhale.
And return it as you inhale.
We are looking for freedom in the timing of the shortening the distance.
I hope you learn to shorten it independent from the breathing.
Now the other way around again.
And as you used to this movement remove both hands from the body.
And continue to paying attention to the breathing and the distance.
And rest please.
Rest with arms long.
Come to standing please.
Bend gently forward a few times.
There is no need to go too far.
Don't do it forcefully.
Do it gently within the comfortable range.
And stay there in the bent position.
Feel the breathing.
Now, try to shorten the distance between the upper lip and the nose as you did on the floor.
Do you feel any ease in the breathing?
Straighten yourself up and walk around.
This concludes the lesson.
Thank you.

The National for Thursday November 30, 2017 - Air Transat, Bill Morneau, Donald Trump - Duration: 51:18.(*)
(*)
>> Rosemary: IT'S THURSDAY,
NOVEMBER 30th AND THIS IS "THE
NATIONAL."
TONIGHT...
>>> THE FINANCE MINISTER UNDER
FIRE.
"AT ISSUE" WEIGHS IN ON HIS
FUTURE.
>> Andrew: ALLEGATIONS OF
INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR AT A
CANADIAN NETWORK COST A
SPORTSCASTER HIS JOB.
>> Ian: BUT WE BEGIN WITH
VINDICATION FOR 600 AIRLINE
PASSENGERS AND QUESTIONS ABOUT
WHO IS PROTECTING YOUR RIGHTS
WHEN YOU FLY.
>>> THOSE PASSENGERS SPENT UP TO
SIX HOURS TRAPPED IN HOT, STUFFY
AIR TRANSAT PLANES LAST SUMMER
WITH NO FOOD
AND LITTLE WATER AFTER THEIR
FLIGHTS WERE DIVERTED TO OTTAWA
DURING BAD WEATHER.
TODAY IN A RARE MOVE THE AIRLINE
WAS
FINED FOR BREAKING ITS AGREEMENT
WITH PASSENGERS.
>> Interview: AIR TRANSAT IS
FORCED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
FOR WHAT WENT ON AND THEY DID
EVERYTHING THEY COULD AFTER OUR
DELAY TO NOT TAKE ANY
RESPONSIBILITY, TO DEFLECT
RESPONSIBILITY, TO EVERY OTHER
PARTY INVOLVED.
>> Ian: TODAY THE CANADIAN
TRANSPORTATION AGENCY CONCLUDED
THAT AIR TRANSAT FAILED, THAT
THERE WAS NO REASON TO JUSTIFY
THE LACK OF SNACKS AND DRINKS.
AS FOR LETTING THE PASSENGERS
OFF THE PLANE, THE C.T.A. SAYS
THAT THERE'S NO EVIDENCE THAT
EITHER PILOT ACTIVELY CONSIDERED
IT.
ANOTHER FAILURE.
IT ORDERED AIR TRANSAT TO TRAIN
EMPLOYEES BETTER, ESPECIALLY
THOSE WHO HANDLE ONBOARD DELAYS.
THE AIRLINE MUST COMPENSATE ALL
OF THE PASSENGERS FOR
OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES AND THE
C.T.A. FINED AIR TRANSAT NEARLY
$300,000, WHICH IT SAID IT WILL
WAIVE IF THE AIRLINE DIVIDES
THAT SUM BETWEEN THE PASSENGERS
INSTEAD.
THAT'S $500 EACH.
IT WAS THE ORDEAL AND OUTRAGE OF
THE PASSENGERS THAT PUT THIS
STORY IN THE HEADLINES AND OUR
CATHERINE CULLENS SPOKE TO SOME
OF THEM TODAY ABOUT THEIR
REACTION.
>> Interview: WE'RE PEOPLE AND
WE NEED TO BE TREATED LIKE
PEOPLE, WE'RE
NOT BAGGAGE.
>> Reporter: YEARS AS A
MECHANIC HAVE LEFT ALAN ABRAHAM
WITH SERIOUS BACK PROBLEMS SO
WHEN A NINE-HOUR FLIGHT FROM
ROME STRETCHED INTO A 14-HOUR
ORDEAL HE WAS SUFFERING.
>> Interview: THE PAIN IN MY
BACK WAS SOMETHING ELSE, LIKE,
IT WAS GETTING REALLY BAD AND
THERE WAS NO RELIEF.
>> Reporter: TWO PLANES WERE
STUCK ON THE TARMAC, INSIDE BOTH
IT WAS GROWING INCREASINGLY HOT.
>> NO WATER.
>> Reporter: ON ABRAHAM'S
PLANE A YOUNG BOY VOMITED TWO
ROWS BEHIND HIM.
>> Interview: THEY NEED TO
PROVIDE TRAINING FOR THEIR STAFF
SO THAT THINGS LIKE THIS MAY NOT
HAPPEN AGAIN.
>> Reporter: HE'S HAPPY THAT
AN EMPHASIS ON TRAINING WAS
PART OF TODAY'S DECISION BUT
SAYS THAT THERE'S MORE TO BE
DONE.
>> Interview: I HONESTLY
BELIEVE THAT THEY SHOULD REFUND
ALL OF THE PASSENGERS' PLANE
TICKETS IN FULL, WHATEVER THE
COST MAY BE.
>> Reporter: DURING THE
INQUIRY, AIR TRANSAT WAS TOLD
THAT THE PLANES WOULD BE
REFUELED IN 15 TO 30 MINUTES AND
LETTING PEOPLE OFF WOULD HAVE
BEEN COMPLICATED AND EXPENSIVE.
>> Interview: CAN YOU FIND 360
HOTEL ROOMS INSIDE OF A COUPLE
MINUTES?
I DON'T THINK SO, IT'S A
LOGISTICAL CHALLENGE.
>> Reporter: IN A STATEMENT
TODAY AIR TRANSAT REITERATED
SINCERE APOLOGIES AND WILL OFFER
$500 TO EACH PASSENGER.
>> Interview: WE'RE AT THE
MONTREAL AIRPORT WAITING FOR MY
FLIGHT.
>> Reporter: PASCAL WAS ON A
>> Reporter: PASQUALE WAS ON A
FLIGHT FROM BRUSSELS WITH HIS
DAUGHTER WHO WAS 10 AT THE TIME
AND HE SAID THAT SHE FAINTED
WHEN SHE GOT OFF THE PLANE AND
INTO THE MONTREAL AIRPORT.
HE SAYS THAT TODAY'S DECISION
DOESN'T GO FAR ENOUGH.
>> Interview: I WOULD SAY THAT
I'M NOT SATISFIED AND I THINK
THAT FOUR HOURS ON THE PLANE IS
STILL A LOT OF TIME BEFORE YOU
CAN GET OUT OF THE PLANE.
>> Reporter: ABRAHAM SAYS THAT
SOME PASSENGERS ARE STILL
EXPLORING THEIR LEGAL OPTIONS.
HAVE YOU GOTTEN ON A PLANE
SINCE?
>> Interview: NO.
>> Reporter: ANY PLANS?
>> Interview: YES.
BUT NOT AIR TRANSAT.
>> Reporter: CATHERINE CULLEN,
CBC NEWS, OTTAWA.
>> Ian: THE GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN
WORKING ON A PASSENGER BILL OF
RIGHTS AND THE MINISTER OF
TRANSPORT SAID THAT TODAY'S
RULING WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN
NEEDED IF THOSE RIGHTS WERE
ALREADY IN PLACE.
>> Interview: SO THAT THE
TARMAC DELAY AFTER THREE HOURS,
ALL OF THE PASSENGERS HAVE THE
RIGHT TO BE DE-PLANED AND THAT
EVERY 30 MINUTES THEY HAVE TO
GET AN INFORMATION UPDATE THAT
THEY'RE PROVIDED WITH THE
CLIMATE CONTROL, THAT THEY'RE
PROVIDED WITH WATER AND THINGS
LIKE THAT.
>> Ian: WELL, DAVID COMMON HAS
BEEN LOOKING INTO THIS PROPOSED
BILL OF RIGHTS AND HERE'S THE
REALLY INTERESTING THING -- THE
CURRENT RULES THAT EXIST NOW
UNDER SOMETHING CALLED THE
TARIFF ACTUALLY LEAD TO BETTER
RIGHTS THAN THIS NEW PASSENGER
BILL OF RIGHTS?
>> Reporter: YEAH, ABSOLUTELY.
SO TAKE AIR TRANSAT OR AIR
CANADA OR WESTJET AND RIGHT NOW
THEIR TARIFF, THEIR OWN RULES,
SAY AFTER 90 MINUTES THEY'LL
GIVE PASSENGERS STUCK ON THE
TARMAC THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET
OFF IF IT'S SAFE AND PRACTICAL
TO DO SO.
BUT THE NEW RULES COMING IN TAKE
THAT 90 MINUTES AND DOUBLE IT,
UP TO THREE HOURS BEFORE THEY
GIVE YOU THE OPTION TO GET OFF
AND, IAN, FOR MANY ADVOCATES
LOOKING AT THIS THEY THINK THAT
IT'S ANOTHER EXAMPLE WHERE THE
NEW PASSENGER BILL OF RIGHTS
GIVES MORE RIGHTS TO AIRLINES
THAN PASSENGERS.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST BEEF WHEN
FLYING?
>> Interview: UM... DELAYS,
DELAYED A LOT.
>> Reporter: CHECK OUT ANY
AIRPORTS --
>> Interview: LOST LUGGAGE.
>> Reporter: AND YOU WILL HEAR
ABOUT IT... YOU EVER HAVE FLIGHT
DELAYS?
>> Interview: YES, ABOUT 40%
OF THE TIME.
>> Reporter: 40% OF THE TIME?
CHRIS CONRAD FACED A BIG
DELAY.
>> Interview: WE SAT THERE FOR
A WHILE AND THEN THEY TAXIED OUT
A BIT AND THEN THEY TAXIED BACK
AGAIN.
>> Reporter: HER VACATION TO
EUROPE WAS DELAYED BY 22 HOURS.
IT ALL STARTED, SHE SAYS, WHEN
THE AIR CANADA PLANE HAD A
MECHANICAL PROBLEM.
AND EVEN THE REPLACEMENT DIDN'T
WORK.
>> Interview: THEY ROBBED ME
OF AN ENTIRE DAY OF MY VACATION
AND I DIDN'T SLEEP FOR 48 HOURS.
I THINK THAT THEY OWE ME AT
LEAST HALF OF MY AIRFARE BACK.
>> Reporter: SHE ASKED, BUT
THE AIRLINE SAID, NO.
AND INSTEAD OFFERED HER A SMALL
DISCOUNT OFF A FUTURE FLIGHT.
>> Interview: IT'S LIKE A SLAP
IN THE FACE REALLY, IT'S LIKE
THEY DON'T CARE.
>> Reporter: UNDER THE CURRENT
RULES CHRIS IS NOT ENTITLED TO
COMPENSATION.
NEW RULES THOUGH ARE COMING BUT
THEY STILL WOULD NOT SEE ANY
MONEY BEING GIVEN BACK TO HER.
>> Interview: UNDER THE NEW
BILL SHE WOULD NOT
GET COMPENSATION EITHER.
THE BILL EXONERATES THE AIRLINES
FROM THE OBLIGATION TO
COMPENSATE PASSENGERS WHEN THE
DELAY IS CAUSED BY MECHANICAL
ISSUES.
>> Reporter: AT ISSUE IS THE
COST.
WHILE AIRLINES ARE RESPONSIBLE
FOR MAINTAINING THEIR PLANES, IF
THEY BREAK, THEY ARE NOT
RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPENSATING
DELAYED PASSENGERS.
INDEED, HAD CHRIS BEEN FLYING
THE OTHER WAY FROM EUROPE TO
CANADA, EUROPEAN RULES WOULD
HAVE REQUIRED COMPENSATION,
OFTEN HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS.
>> Interview: IT HAS BEEN THE
RULE IN EUROPE AND I DON'T SEE
WHY IT SHOULD BE ANY DIFFERENT
IN CANADA.
>> Reporter: THE NEW RULES MAY
REQUIRE AIRLINES TO PROVIDE
HOTEL ROOMS AND TAXIS AND MEALS
BUT NOT MONEY.
>> Interview: WELL, WE DECIDED
THAT WE DON'T WANT TO PUT THAT
KIND OF IMPOSITION ON THE
AIRLINE.
WE DON'T WANT, CERTAINLY, FOR
THEM TO SORT OF IN A MARGINAL
SITUATION WHERE SOMETHING ISN'T
WORKING PERFECTLY AND DECIDE TO
FLY ANYWAY.
>> Reporter: IN EUROPE THEY
DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN
SAFETY AND COMPENSATION, THEY
GET BOTH.
>> Interview: WE'RE PUTTING
TOGETHER OUR OWN BILL OF RIGHTS
AND I THINK THAT YOU'LL SEE THAT
WE HAVE A WORLD-LEADING CLASS --
OR CATEGORY OF COMPENSATIONS.
>> Reporter: THE BILL MAY BE
BETTER IN MANY AREAS, BUT FOR
CHRIS CONRAD EVEN UNDER THE NEW
RULES SHE WOULD GET NO MONEY
BACK.
IF HER FLIGHT THOUGH HAD BEEN
LEAVING FROM EUROPE IT WOULD
HAVE BEEN $900.
DAVID COMMON, CBC NEWS, TORONTO.
>> Ian: AND YOU CAN SEE THE FULL
"MARKETPLACE" INVESTIGATION
TOMORROW AT 8:00 ON CBC
TELEVISION AND 8:30 IN
NEWFOUNDLAND.
AND, ROSEMARY, IT WILL BE
INTERESTING TO SEE HOW THEY
HANDLE THE DELAYS ON THE TARMAC
NOW THAT THIS DECISION IS
HANDLED DOWN.
>> Rosemary: IT'S A STORY THAT
EVERYONE CAN RELATE TO, IAN.
>>> ATTACKS AGAINST FINANCE
MINISTER BILL MORNEAU HAS BEEN
RELENTLESS AND TODAY THERE WERE
NEW REVELATIONS THAT HIS FATHER
SOLD OFF $1.5 MILLION IN SHARES
IN THEIR FAMILY COMPANY AND THAT
HAPPENED JUST
DAYS BEFORE A MAJOR TAX
ANNOUNCEMENT.
AS DAVID COCHRANE TELLS US, THAT
LED TO TEMPERS FLARING UP ON THE
HOUSE OF COMMONS FLOOR.
>> (Speaker of the House):
MEMBER, ORDER.
>> Reporter: THE OPPOSITION
USED QUESTION PERIOD TO PIN THE
SALES OF THE FATHER UPON THE
SON.
>> The Hon. Pierre Poilievre:
IS IT A COINCIDENCE THAT HE AND
HIS FATHER SOLD MILLIONS OF
DOLLARS WORTH OF SHARES A WEEK
BEFORE HE INTRODUCED TAX
INCREASES THAT HELPED TO DROP
THE VALUE OF THOSE SHARES?
>> The Hon. Bill Morneau: I
WANT TO SAY THAT I HAVE A LEVEL
OF DISGUST FOR WHAT'S GOING ON
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HOUSE.
[Interjections]
I ACTUALLY DID NOT KNOW -- I DID
NOT KNOW, MR. SPEAKER, THAT THE
MEMBER FROM CARLETON COULD SINK
ANY LOWER.
>> Reporter: THE MORNEAU
FAMILY UNDER THE MICROSCOPE,
THEIR INTEGRITY UNDER ATTACK.
>> Interview: WHY DOESN'T HE
JUST DO THE RIGHT THING AND
RESIGN?
>> Reporter: THINGS GOT SO BAD
THAT THE SPEAKER REPEATEDLY
ASKED FOR QUIET.
>> (Speaker of the House): I
KNOW THAT THERE ARE A LOT...
>> Reporter: HE FINALLY
EVICTED CONSERVATIVE M.P. BLAKE
RICHARDS FROM THE HOUSE FOR
BEING DISRUPTIVE.
>> (Speaker of the House):
ORDER.
OR HE COULD GO OUTSIDE OR BE
HELPED OUTSIDE.
WHICH WOULD HE PREFER?
WHICH WOULD HE PREFER?
I ASK THE SERGEANT-AT-ARMS TO
REMOVE MR. RICHARDS.
>> Reporter: BUT THEN IT
STARTED AGAIN.
[Interjections]
>> The Hon. Pierre Poilievre:
MEMBERS OF THE MARKET DID NOT
EXACTLY THE TIMING OF THIS
MEASURE UNTIL THAT MEASURE
-- MEMBER INTRODUCED IT ON THIS
FLOOR OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS,
SOME PEOPLE APPARENTLY DID.
WHO WERE THEY?
>> Reporter: THE CONSERVATIVES
INSIST THAT THE TIMING OF THE
TAX CHANGES WAS A TIGHTLY HELD
SECRET THAT LET THE MORNEAUS
PROFIT.
IF SO, IT WAS A BAD SECRET.
THE LIBERALS CAMPAIGNED ON IT ON
THE DAY THEY MOVED INTO OFFICE
AND THEY TOLD EVERYONE WHEN IT
WAS COMING.
>> Interview: THE PRIME
MINISTER MADE IT CLEAR TO US
THAT IT'S HIS HOPE AND INTENTION
THAT THE TAX MEASURES COULD BE
IN PLACE FOR JANUARY 1st.
>> Reporter: WHICH MEANS THAT
THE ENTIRE COUNTRY HAD THE SAME
INFORMATION AS MORNEAU AND HIS
DAD.
>> The Hon. Bill Morneau: I
DID NOT AT ANY POINT IN TIME,
NOR WOULD I AT ANY POINT IN
TIME, DISCUSS ANY CONFIDENTIAL
INFORMATION WITH MY FATHER.
>> Reporter: THE OPPOSITION IS
RIGHT THAT THE T.S.X. DROPPED
THE DAY THAT THE TAX BILL WAS
INTRODUCED BUT SO DID EVERYTHING
ELSE, THE DOW AND NASDAQ AND S&P
ALL DOWN, AND OIL HIT A SIX-YEAR
LOW.
A MAJOR SLUMP TO END THE YEAR
FOR STOCKS SINCE THE GLOBAL
FINANCIAL CRISIS OF 2008.
NO FINANCE MINISTER COULD DO ALL
OF THAT WITH A SIMPLE TAX HIKE
ON THE RICH.
DAVID COCHRANE, CBC NEWS,
OTTAWA.
>> Rosemary: NOW BACK TO THAT
M.P. WHO GOT KICKED OUT OF THE
HOUSE OF COMMONS.
IT IS A DRAMATIC AND UNUSUAL
MOVE BY THE SPEAKER.
IN FACT, THE LAST TIME IT
HAPPENED WAS BACK IN 2002, 15
YEARS AGO, IT WAS THAT FELLOW
THERE.
AND NOW INCLUDING BLAKE RICHARDS
WHO WAS KICKED OUT TODAY,
M.P.s HAVE ONLY BEEN KICKED
OUT 44 TIMES, ACCORDING TO THE
PARLIAMENTARY RECORDS DATING ALL
THE WAY BACK TO 1913.
>>> IT'S THURSDAY, MY FAVOURITE
DAY OF THE WEEK AND IT MEANS
THAT IT'S "AT ISSUE" NIGHT AND
OUR PANEL WILL WEIGH IN ON BILL
MORNEAU AND HIS FUTURE AS
FINANCE MINISTER.
ALL OF THOSE LOVELY LADIES IN 20
MINUTES.
>>> TALK OF A MAJOR CABINET
SHAKEUP REACHED A FEVER PITCH
TODAY WITH MULTIPLE REPORTING
SUGGESTING THAT REX TILLERSON
WILL LOSE HIS JOB AS SECRETARY
OF STATE.
WHEN THE PRESIDENT WAS ASKED
THIS MORNING IF TILLERSON IS ON
THE WAY OUT, WELL, HE DIDN'T
EXACTLY ANSWER THE QUESTION.
>> Question: MR. PRESIDENT
SHOULD REX -- DO YOU WANT REX
TILLERSON ON THE JOB,
MR. PRESIDENT?
>> President Donald Trump:
HE'S HERE, REX IS HERE.
>> Rosemary: TILLERSON WAS, IN
FACT, IN THE ROOM AT THE TIME SO
IS HE IN OR OUT OF THE JOB?
THE FORMER MOBILE C.E.O. HAS
BEEN RUMOURED TO BE OUT SINCE AT
LEAST
SEPTEMBER, WHEN THE PRESIDENT
STARTED PUBLICLY UNDERCUTTING
HIS DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS,
ESPECIALLY WITH NORTH KOREA.
THEN THERE WERE REPORTS IN
OCTOBER THAT TILLERSON CALLED
TRUMP "A MORON" AND HIS RUMOURED
REPLACEMENT AS SECRETARY OF
STATE, THAT WOULD BE THE C.I.A.
DIRECTOR AND TRUMP LOYALIST MIKE
POMPEO, WITH SENATOR TOM COTTON
TAKING OVER FROM HIM AT THE SPY
AGENCY.
OKAY, QUITE THE SHELLGAME AND
LET'S BRING IN KEITH BOAG NOW TO
TRY TO MAKE SENSE OF IT.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY GOING ON HERE,
DO YOU THINK, KEITH?
>> Reporter: WELL, I THINK
THAT THE IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW
IS THAT ALL OF THIS INFORMATION
AND ALL OF THIS SPECULATION IS
COMING FROM INSIDE OF THE WHITE
HOUSE AND DELIBERATELY SO.
AND THERE'S EVEN A WHITE HOUSE
SOURCE TELLING MEDIA TONIGHT
THAT THIS IS A PUBLIC SHAMING.
NOW, OF COURSE, WHAT THEY SAY
PUBLICLY AND ON THE RECORD IS
VERY DIFFERENT.
HERE'S SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS
TALKING TO REPORTERS TODAY.
SHE'S THE WHITE HOUSE
SPOKESPERSON...
>> Interview: WHEN THE
PRESIDENT LOSES CONFIDENCE IN
SOMEONE THEY WILL NO LONGER
SERVE IN THE CAPACITY THEY ARE
IN.
AND THE PRESIDENT WAS HERE TODAY
WITH THE SECRETARY OF STATE AND
THEY ENGAGED IN A FOREIGN LEADER
VISIT AND THEY'RE CONTINUING TO
WORK TOGETHER TO CLOSE OUT WHAT
WE HAVE SEEN TO BE AN INCREDIBLE
YEAR.
>> Reporter: OKAY, ROSEMARY,
THE FIRST THING TO POINT OUT IS
THAT AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF
HER COMMENTS SHE SUGGESTS MORE
OR LESS IF THE PRESIDENT WERE
UNHAPPY WITH REX TILLERSON, REX
TILLERSON WOULDN'T BE HERE, BUT,
OF COURSE, THAT IS NOT TRUE.
WE HAVE LEARNED IN THE LAST 10
MONTHS THIS IS EXACTLY THE WAY
THAT THE PRESIDENT DEALS WITH
PEOPLE WHEN HE'S UNHAPPY WITH
THEM -- HE LEAKS INFORMATION SO
THAT PEOPLE KNOW HE'S UNHAPPY
AND HE MAY GO AS FAR AS TO LEAK
INFORMATION ABOUT WHO HE MIGHT
REPLACE THAT PERSON WITH WHEN HE
GETS RID OF THEM.
WE SAW IT WITH SEAN SPICER, THE
PRESS SECRETARY AND WITH REINCE
PRIEBUS, THE FORMER CHIEF OF
STAFF AND EVEN TRIED TO DO IT
WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL JEFF
SESSIONS, SO WE HAVE SEEN THIS
BEFORE.
>> Rosemary: IT IS A PATTERN
AT THIS POINT, I THINK THAT IS
FAIR.
UNTIL HE LEAVES, IF HE LEAVES,
HOW EFFECTIVE CAN TILLERSON BE
AS SECRETARY OF STATE?
>> Reporter: WELL, I MEAN, HE
HASN'T BEEN VERY
EFFECTIVE IN THE ROLE TO BEGIN
WITH, AND NOT SIMPLY SINCE TRUMP
HAS UNDERCUT HIM, AS HE HAS
UNDERCUT HIM SINCE THE VERY
BEGINNING, BUT
TILLERSON HAS NOT BEEN EFFECTIVE
IN THAT JOB.
BUT IT IS NOW CLEAR TO THE WORLD
THAT HE IS NOT SPEAKING FOR THE
PRESIDENT, AND THAT THE
PRESIDENT IS UNHAPPY WITH HIM,
THAT TILLERSON HAS BEEN HUNG OUT
TO DRY.
SO TONIGHT HE SURELY WOULD BE
THINKING ABOUT WHAT OPTIONS DOES
HE HAVE AND HE MAY HAVE ONLY
ONE -- WHICH WOULD BE TO QUIT.
WE'LL SEE.
>> Rosemary: AND IT WILL BE AN
ISSUE THAT RESONATES HERE IN
OTTAWA TOO, KEITH, BECAUSE
CHRYSTIA FREELAND HAS SPENT A
LOT OF TIME ESTABLISHING THAT
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TWO OF
THEM AND IF HE'S GONE SHE'LL
HAVE TO START FROM GROUND ZERO.
THANK YOU.
>>> IF REX TILLERSON DOES GET
FIRED HE'D BE THE LATEST
HIGH-PROFILE EXIT FROM THE TRUMP
ADMINISTRATION SINCE HE TOOK
OFFICE IN JANUARY.
THE PRESIDENT HAS ALREADY PUSHED
OUT HIS NATIONAL SECURITY
ADVISOR MICHAEL FLYNN.
HE DRAMATICALLY FIRED THE F.B.I.
DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY IN MAY.
AND PRESS SECRETARY SEAN SPICER
RESIGNED AFTER COMMUNICATIONS
DIRECTOR ANTHONY SCARAMUCCI WAS
APPOINTED.
THE MOOCH LASTED 11 DAYS.
HEALTH SECRETARY STEVE PRICE WAS
SACKED.
AND STEVE BANNON LEFT AS WHITE
HOUSE STRATEGIST AND WALTER
SHAUB QUIT, AND EVEN THE ARE
CHIEF USHER, ANGELLA REID WAS
LET GO AFTER TRUMP MOVED INTO
THE WHITE HOUSE.
SO FAR 16 PEOPLE HAVE RESIGNED
OR BEEN FIRED FROM THE
10-MONTH-OLD TRUMP
ADMINISTRATION BESIEGED BY
CONTROVERSY.
SOME TURNOVER IS NORMAL IN A NEW
ADMINISTRATION, ANDREW, BUT
THAT'S AN ASTOUNDING NUMBER THIS
EARLY ON.
>> Andrew: AND, FUNNY, YOU
KNOW, ON THAT NOTE, WHEN
BARACK OBAMA WENT THROUGH THREE
CHIEFS OF STAFF IN LESS THAN
THREE YEARS, TRUMP ACTUALLY
MOCKED HIM FOR IT ON TWITTER,
SUGGESTING THAT THAT WAS WHY HE
WAS INEFFECTIVE AS A PRESIDENT.
>> Rosemary: THERE'S A TWEET
FOR EVERYTHING WITH DONALD
TRUMP.
>> Andrew: TRUE, TRUE.
HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED, I
SUPPOSE.
>>> WELL, IF YOU HAVE BEEN TO
THE EMERGENCY ROOM YOU KNOW WHAT
TO EXPECT -- HOURS OF TEDIOUS
WAITING.
NOBODY WANTS TO BE THERE AND
NOBODY KNOWS WHEN THEY'LL GET TO
LEAVE AND THE LATEST NUMBERS
SHOW THAT THE WAITS ARE GETTING
LONGER.
THE AVERAGE FOR THE VAST
MAJORITY OF PATIENTS IN AND OUT
IS JUST UNDER EIGHT HOURS.
THAT'S UP SLIGHTLY FROM LAST
YEAR, BUT FOR MORE COMPLEX CASES
THE WAIT IS EVEN LONGER, MORE
THAN 32.5 HOURS FOR PATIENTS WHO
NEED TO BE ADMITTED.
THAT'S AN INCREASE OF MORE THAN
THREE HOURS.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE
HOSPITAL BED YOU'RE WAITING FOR
NEVER OPENS UP?
AS CHRISTINE BIRAK EXPLAINS,
HOURS ON A STRETCHER CAN TURN
INTO DAYS.
>> Reporter: HERE INSIDE OF
ONE OF THE BUSIEST EMERGENCY
ROOMS IN THE COUNTRY AT BRAMPTON
CIVIC HOSPITAL... JAMIE LEE BALL
ARRIVED AND COLLAPSED ON THE
FLOOR.
SHE HAD HAD ABDOMINAL SURGERY
EIGHT WEEKS BEFORE.
>> Interview: WHEN I WALKED
INTO THE EMERGENCY ROOM I WAS IN
EXCRUCIATING PAIN AND IT WAS THE
WORST PAIN THAT I HAD EVER BEEN
IN MY LIFE.
>> Reporter: AT FIRST SHE LAY
ON A
STRETCHER NEAR A NURSE'S
STATION, A NOISY WELL-LIT AREA
WITH NO PRIVACY AND THEN BEHIND
THIS.
>> Interview: A REALLY SMALL
THIN CURTAIN AND YOU CAN'T
STRETCH YOUR ARM OUT FROM
SIDE-TO-SIDE AND I WAS IN THAT
ROOM WITH ABOUT 20 PEOPLE.
>> Reporter: FIVE DAYS LATER
SHE'D HAD ENOUGH.
>> Interview: I NEVER ENDED UP
IN THE PROPER SECTION FOR MY
ABDOMINAL ISSUES AND I NEVER
ENDED UP WITH A ROOM.
>> Reporter: HER EXPERIENCE,
AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT'S HAPPENING
ON A LARGER SCALE AT HOSPITALS
ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
>> Interview: SO HOSPITALS
RIGHT NOW ARE BURSTING AT THE
SEAMS.
>> Reporter: WHILE THEY'RE
CALLED EMERGENCY ROOM WAIT
TIMES, THE DOCTOR SAYS THAT THE
REAL PROBLEM IS MOVING PATIENTS
OUT OF BEDS IN OTHER PARTS OF
THE HOSPITAL AND
INTO LONG-TERM CARE SO OTHERS
CAN CLAIM THEIR SPACE.
>> Interview: THEY'RE STUCK IN
A HOSPITAL SO THAT MEANS THAT
PATIENTS WHO ARE IN THE
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT WHO ARE
SICK ENOUGH TO BE ADMITTED CAN'T
WORK THEIR WAY INTO THE HOSPITAL
FOR TREATMENT.
THEY STAY IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM.
>> Reporter: AND PATIENTS OVER
65 WAIT THE LONGEST TO BE
ADMITTED AND THIS LATEST REPORT
SHOWS THAT 90% OF THE EMERGENCY
DEPARTMENT VISITS BY SENIORS
LAST YEAR WERE COMPLETED WITHIN
36 HOURS, THAT'S NEARLY FIVE
HOURS LONGER THAN THE PREVIOUS
YEAR.
>> Interview: WHEN THEY STAY
IN
THE EMERGENCY ROOM THEY'RE
SUSCEPTIBLE TO DELIRIUM, WHERE
THEIR BRAIN STARTS TO
HALLUCINATE AND HAVE MEMORY
PROBLEMS, COGNITION PROBLEMS AND
THAT CAN STAY WITH YOU FOR WEEKS
OR MONTHS AFTER YOU ARE
DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL.
>> Reporter: EXPERTS SAY THAT
FUNDING FOR NURSING HOME BEDS
AND BETTER HOMECARE NEEDS TO
COME THROUGH BECAUSE NO ONE
SHOULD LEAVE THE HOSPITAL SICKER
THAN WHEN THEY ARRIVED.
CHRISTINE BIRAK, CBC NEWS,
TORONTO.
>> Ian: WE ARE FOLLOWING A STORY
DEVELOPING TONIGHT HERE IN
TORONTO... A HIGH-PROFILE
BROADCASTER WITH SPORTSNET HAS
BEEN ABRUPTLY FIRED FOR
HARASSMENT AND THE SPORTSNET
NETWORK IS NOT SAYING MUCH BUT
HAS RELEASED A STATEMENT AND IT
SAID, THIS WEEK WE HAVE RECEIVED
COMPLAINTS FROM MULTIPLE FEMALE
EMPLOYEES AT SPORTSNET REGARDING
INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR AND
COMMENTS BY GREGG ZAUN IN THE
WORKPLACE.
WHILE THE STATEMENT DOESN'T
PROVIDE DETAILS, CBC LEARNED
THAT SPORTSNET DID NOT RECEIVE
ALLEGATIONS OF ANY PHYSICAL
CONTACT, BUT, RATHER, THE USE OF
INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE AND
SHARING OF PICTURES.
ZAUN IS A FORMER MAJOR LEAGUE
BASEBALL PLAYER, INCLUDING WITH
THE BLUE JAYS.
MORE RECENTLY HE'S BEEN A
HIGH-PROFILE SPORTSCASTER WITH
THE TEAM.
>>> THE U.S. SENATE ETHICS
COMMITTEE IS OPENING UP AN
INVESTIGATION INTO DEMOCRATIC
SENATOR AL FRANKEN OVER SEXUAL
MISCONDUCT.
THERE ARE NOW FIVE WOMEN
ACCUSING FRANKEN OF GROPING AND
THE LATEST IS AN ARMY VETERAN.
AND STEPHANIE KEMPLIN SAID SHE
MET FRANKEN WHEN HE VISITED
TROOPS IN KUWAIT IN 2003.
MOMENTS BEFORE THIS PHOTO WAS
TAKEN SHE SAID THAT FRANKEN
CUPPED HER BREASTS FOR FIVE OR
10 SECONDS.
HE'S APOLOGIZED FOR SOME OF HIS
BEHAVIOUR.
IT'S NOT CLEAR WHAT DISCIPLINE
HE COULD FACE FROM THE ETHICS
COMMITTEE OR WHETHER THE
FINDINGS WILL BE MADE PUBLIC.
>>> WE HEARD THIS MORNING FROM
FORMER "THE TODAY SHOW" HOST
MATT LAUER AFTER HE WAS FIRED BY
NBC FOR SEXUAL MISCONDUCT.
HERE'S PART OF WHAT LAUER SAID
IN A STATEMENT... "THERE ARE NO
WORDS TO EXPRESS MY SORROW AND
REGRET FOR THE PAIN I HAVE
CAUSED OTHERS BY WORDS AND
ACTIONS.
TO THE PEOPLE I HAVE HURT, I AM
TRULY SORRY.
SOME OF WHAT IS BEING SAID ABOUT
ME IS UNTRUE OR
MISCHARACTERIZED, BUT THERE IS
ENOUGH TRUTH IN THESE STORIES TO
MAKE ME FEEL EMBARRASSED AND
ASHAMED."
LAUER WAS FIRED YESTERDAY AFTER
AN NBC EMPLOYEE CAME FORWARD OF
ACCUSATIONS OF INAPPROPRIATE
SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR.
SINCE THEN SEVERAL OTHER WOMEN
HAVE COME FORWARD INCLUDING ONE
WHO TOLD "THE NEW YORK TIMES"

SUBMARINE CREW ALIVE.
THE NAVY WILL STILL SEARCH FOR
THE SUB ITSELF BUT IT'S NOW A

THAT SUB DISAPPEARED ABOUT TWO

THEY ONLY HAD ABOUT A WEEK'S

ADAM KARGUS, A 29-YEAR-OLD DOING

TO DEATH BY HIS CELL MATE.
FOOTAGE THAT "THE FIFTH ESTATE"

WHAT'S MORE, FOR AN HOUR AND A
HALF WHILE ADAM IS BEATEN TO
DEATH NO GUARDS DO THE ROUNDS,
SOMETHING THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO DO
EVERY 30 MINUTES.
A GUARD WHO WORKED AT THE JAIL
FOR TWO DECADES AGREED TO TALK
TO US BUT ASKS FOR ANONYMITY.
>> Interview: IT'S ABOUT
SOMEBODY SITTING GLUED IN FRONT

IT'S PRETTY TOUGH TO DO.
>> Reporter: WE TRACK DOWN A

THEY'RE NOT EVEN DOING ROUNDS,
SO YOU CAN -- THEY'RE NOT DOING

>> Reporter: NEXT MORNING, THE
INMATE DRAGS ADAM'S DEAD BODY IN

DUMPS IT IN THE SHOWER AREA.
STILL NO GUARDS NOTICE.
ADAM'S KILLER, INMATE ANTHONY
GEORGE, AGREES TO MEET WITH US.
SO I WANTED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT
ADAM'S DEATH.
AND WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY.
>> Interview: I DON'T REALLY
RECALL THE INCIDENT THAT MUCH.
LIKE, I DRANK A LOT OF ALCOHOL
AND THERE WERE OTHER SUBSTANCES
INVOLVED.
>> Reporter: WHY DID YOU KILL
ADAM?
>> Interview: THERE'S NO
REASON BEHIND IT.
LIKE I SAID I WAS INTOXICATED, I
DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY IT HAPPENED
MYSELF.
>> Reporter: I BET YOU THAT
PEOPLE WATCHING WOULD SAY YOU'RE
A MONSTER?
>> Interview: I GUESS SO.
>> Reporter: ADAM KARGUS IS
NOT THE ONLY INMATE WHO HAS DIED
AT THIS JAIL.
SINCE 2009 THERE'S BEEN 10
DEATHS UNDER QUESTIONABLE
CIRCUMSTANCES.
THE JAIL IS REGULATED BY
ONTARIO'S MINISTRY OF
CORRECTIONS.
SO WE MEET UP WITH THE MINISTER
LALONDE WHO RUNS IT.
SINCE 2009 THERE HAVE BEEN AT
LEAST 10 SUSPURS DEATHS INSIDE
OF THE PRISON, WHY HAS THE
MINISTRY NOT PREVENTED THESE
DEATHS FROM HAPPENING?
>> Interview: THESE ARE
MATTERS BEFORE THE COURTS AND I
CANNOT COMMENT ON ANY SPECIFICS.
>> Reporter: I'M NOT ASKING
FOR SPECIFICS.
>> Interview: WHAT I CAN TELL
YOU IS THAT IT'S MY GOAL TO
ENSURE THAT THE CORRECTION
SYSTEM IS THE VERY BEST IN
CANADA AND THE WORLD.
>> Reporter: LALONDE SAYS THAT
THE MINISTRY HAS HIRED 1600 NEW
GUARDS AND SHE SAYS THAT SHE
PLANS ON INTRODUCING NEW
LEGISLATION TO OVERHAUL
CORRECTIONS IN ONTARIO.
MEANWHILE AT THE JAIL THERE'S NO
ONE REGULARLY MONITORING THOSE
CAMERAS.
>> Ian: YOU CAN CATCH THE FULL
"FIFTH ESTATE" INVESTIGATION
TOMORROW NIGHT AT 9:00 ON CBC
TELEVISION AND 9:30 IN
NEWFOUNDLAND.
>> Rosemary: WHEN WE COME
BACK, HE'S BEEN UNDER FIRE FOR
WEEKS IN THE HOUSE.
THE OPPOSITION IS NOW
DEMANDING HIS RESIGNATION.
CAN BILL MORNEAU WEATHER THE
STORM?
THE "AT ISSUE" PANEL HAS A FEW
THOUGHTS.
>> Andrew: AND WE'LL TAKE TO
YOU BOSTON WHERE THEY'RE
CELEBRATING A CENTURY LONG

>> The Hon. Pierre Poilievre:
IT TURNS OUT THAT THE MINISTER'S
FATHER SOLD $1.5 MILLION WORTH
OF SHARES JUST FOUR DAYS BEFORE
THE TAX ANNOUNCEMENT THAT
DROPPED MORNEAU SHAPELL SHARE
PRICES.
IS THAT JUST A COINCIDENCE?
>> Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau: EASY RULE OF THUMB FOR
CANADIANS WATCHING THE GOINGS ON
IN THIS HOUSE OF COMMONS IS TO
SEE WHETHER OR NOT THE
ALLEGATIONS MADE INSIDE OF THIS
HOUSE ARE MADE OUTSIDE THIS
HOUSE.
AS THE CONSERVATIVE HOUSE LEADER
HERSELF SAID LAST NIGHT, THEY
DON'T WANT TO GET SUED.
>> Rosemary: SO LET'S TAKE
THIS OUTSIDE, ISN'T THAT WHAT
PEOPLE SAY BEFORE A BAR BRAWL?
BUT THIS WAS INSIDE OF THE HOUSE
OF COMMONS WHERE QUESTION PERIOD
WAS TESTY TODAY, BUT ALSO
ALL WEEK, ALL OVER ACCUSATIONS
AND ALLEGATIONS AGAINST FINANCE
MINISTER BILL MORNEAU.
AND OF INSIDER TRADING AND THIS
TIME THE CRITICS CALL FOR HIS
RESIGNATION AND A GOOD THING
THAT THE WOMEN OF "AT ISSUE" ARE
HERE, AND TONIGHT WE HAVE MARIE
V EVERYONE STALL HERE IN OTTAWA,
AND
JENNIFER DITCHBURN OF POLICY
OPTIONS IN OTTAWA AND SHACHI
KRL, THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF
THE ANGUS REID
INSTITUTE, IN TORONTO TONIGHT.
SHACHI, LET ME START WITH YOU,
DO YOU THINK THAT WE'RE AT ANY
SORT OF CRITICAL MASS HERE IN
TERMS OF HOW MUCH DAMAGE THE
OPPOSITION IS DOING TO BILL
MORNEAU OR DAMAGE THAT HE MAY DO
TO HIMSELF?
>> Interview: THAT'S THE
ISSUE, ROSIE, HE'S ALREADY THE
MOST RECOGNISED MEMBER OF
CABINET AND CANADIANS HAVE THE
MOST AWARENESS OF HIM OVER AND
ABOVE EVERY OTHER MINISTER AND
IT'S NOT BECAUSE THEY PERCEIVE
HIM TO BE DOING A GREAT JOB.
YOU COMBINE THAT WITH THE FACT
THAT HE'S HAD NOT THE BEST WEEK,
HE MANAGED TO KNOCK THIS
GOVERNMENT OFF ITS MESSAGE, OFF
ITS AGENDA, AROUND THE APOLOGY
TO LGBTQ2 CANADIANS AND THERE'S
THIS CLOUD THAT JUST CONTINUES
TO FOLLOW HIM EVERYWHERE THAT HE
GOES.
YOU HAVE TO WONDER NOW IF JUSTIN
TRUDEAU ISN'T HAVING HIS SORT OF
MOMENT A LA KING HENRY II AND
HE'S THINKING ABOUT HIS
ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY, WHO
WILL RID ME OF THIS TROUBLESOME
MINISTER.
AT THIS STAGE THE ONLY THING
THAT THE LIBERALS REALLY HAVE A
LOT OF CONTROL OVER IS NOT IF
BILL MORNEAU ULTIMATELY GOES,
BUT WHEN.
>> Rosemary: REALLY?
YES?
>> Interview: I FEEL THEY NEED
TO ORDER SOME POSTERS FOR EVERY
POLITICIAN ON THE HILL AND ONE
WILL SAY PERCEPTION OF
WRONGDOING CAN BE BAD AND THE
OTHER WOULD SAY FULL
TRANSPARENCY AND DISCLOSURES
ALWAYS THE BEST BET.
AND SOME RUDIMENTARY MISTAKES
THEY MADE ALONG THE WAY AND IS
ONE UNDERESTIMATING HOW THE
PUBLIC OPINION CAN FORM ABOUT
THINGS EVEN IF YOU REALLY DIDN'T
DO WHAT PEOPLE SAID THAT YOU
DID.
I THINK THAT WE HAVE SEEN SO
MANY EXAMPLES OF THIS, RIGHT,
PERCEPTION IS REALLY IMPORTANT.
BUT THE SECOND PART IS JUST PUT
IT ALL OUT THERE.
DON'T TALK TO A COUPLE OF
COLUMNISTS AND DO THE FILES AND
PUT THE DATA OUT THERE AND SAY,
LOOK, HERE'S ALL OF THE STUFF
AND TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND YOU
CAN SEE THAT WE DIDN'T DO
ANYTHING WRONG, WHERE'S THE
STORY AFTER THAT.
BUT INSTEAD YOU HAVE THIS DRIP,
DRIP, DRIP.
YOU KNOW, I MEAN, I GUESS
BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT
WE DO FOR A LIVING BUT
TRANSPARENCY IS THE BEST WAY TO
KILL A STORY.
>> Rosemary: I DON'T THINK
THAT THE OPPOSITION HAS PROVEN
ANYTHING AT ALL AND THEY'RE JUST
INSINUATING THINGS BUT MAYBE
THAT'S ENOUGH?
>> Interview: YEAH, AND I
AGREE WITH JEN, NOT ONLY IN THIS
FILE, BUT FOR TWO YEARS WITH
THIS GOVERNMENT OFTEN WHEN
THEY'RE IN TROUBLE THEY JUST
DON'T SAY WHAT'S GOING ON AND
THEY KIND OF JUST LET THE STORY
PERCOULATE FOR WEEKS AND WEEKS.
IN THIS CASE IT IS ODD THAT SOME
INFORMATION IS OUT AND OTHER
INFORMATION IS NOT AND BILL
MORNEAU'S OFFICE IS SAYING WELL,
WE DON'T HAVE THE DATE WHEN
THESE SHARES WERE SOLD BUT I
ASSUME THAT YOU CAN ASK YOUR
FINANCIAL ADVISOR WHEN THAT
TRANSACTION WAS MADE.
IT'S ALL A BIT ODD.
AND JEN IS RIGHT, IT DOESN'T
NECESSARILY MATTER IF WHAT YOU
ARE ALLEGED TO HAVE DONE IS
TRUE, IT MATTERS THAT PEOPLE
READ THE HEADLINE IN THE MORNING
AND YOUR NAME IS ASSOCIATED WITH
WRONGDOING.
BUT, AGAIN, I MEAN, THIS IS
BASICALLY THEIR OWN WRONGDOING.
AT A CERTAIN POINT YOU HAVE TO
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FACT
THAT YOU MADE A DECISION OR YOU
WERE GIVEN BAD ADVICE TO NOT
JUST PUT YOUR ASSETS IN A BLIND
TRUST FROM THE BEGINNING AND
THAT FIRST INITIAL DECISION, IT
IS WHAT HAS MADE BILL MORNEAU'S
PAST FEW MONTHS SO, SO
DIFFICULT.
>> Rosemary: SHACHI, LAST WORD
TO YOU THERE.
>> Interview: YOU MIGHT ALSO
WANT TO
PLAY OFFENSE AND NOT DEFENCE AND
THE CONSERVATIVE FILE ON
PERCEIVED CRIMES AND
MISDEMEANORS IS JUST AS THICK
AND IT'S FAT, PERHAPS THICKER
AND FATTER, BECAUSE THIS
GOVERNMENT HASN'T BEEN AROUND AS
LONG AND SO WHY AREN'T WE SEEING
A BIT MORE ATTACK FROM THIS
GOVERNMENT?
THAT WOULD BE MY QUESTION.
>> Rosemary: YEAH, I'VE ALWAYS
WONDERED TOO WHY THEY LET BILL
MORNEAU ANSWER EVERYTHING AND
TWIST IN THE WIND A BIT AND WHY
NOT PUTTING A PITBULL UP TO
DEFEND HIM A BIT.
OKAY I WANT TO CHANGE TOPICS
TO -- YEAH?
>> Interview: YOU CAN MAKE THE
ARGUMENT THAT HE'S BEING
ACCOUNTABLE AND TAKING
RESPONSIBILITY BUT HE SHOULD BE
PROACTIVE LIKE SHACHI SAID AND
GO OFFENSE AND NOT JUST REPEAT
THE SAME LINE ALL THE TIME AND
NOT ANSWER.
>> Rosemary: I'M GOING TO
CHANGE THE TOPIC TO A COUPLE
APOLOGIES THAT THE PRIME
MINISTER HAS DONE OVER THE PAST
WEEK OR SO AND I'LL PLAY THIS
CLIP AND THEN WE'LL TALK ABOUT
IT...
>> Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau: WE ARE SORRY FOR THE
MISGUIDED BELIEF THAT INDIGENOUS
CHILDREN COULD ONLY BE PROPERLY
PROVIDED FOR, CARED FOR, OR
EDUCATED IF THEY WERE SEPARATED
FROM THE INFLUENCE OF THEIR
FAMILIES, TRADITIONS AND
CULTURES.
WE HAVE FAILED LGBTQ2
COMMUNITIES AND INDIVIDUALS TIME
AND TIME AGAIN.
>> Rosemary: JEN, I'LL START
WITH YOU, I DON'T THINK THAT
ANYONE WOULD ARGUE WITH THE
APOLOGIES BUT I WONDER ABOUT THE
IMPACT OF THE APOLOGIES AND THEN
THE QUESTION ABOUT WHAT COMES
NEXT.
YOU HAVE MADE THE SYMBOLIC
GESTURE BUT WHAT ARE YOU
ACTUALLY TRYING TO REPAIR?
>> Interview: SO THERE'S A LOT
OF CONTEXT IS IMPORTANT, RIGHT?
WELL, FIRST OF ALL, WHEN YOU
MAKE AN APOLOGY YOU HAVE TO
ACKNOWLEDGE THE FACTS AND YOU
HAVE TO TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY
AND ACTUALLY THE U.N. TALKS
ABOUT THIS WHEN IT TALKS ABOUT
MAKING REPARATIONS FOR WAR
CRIMES AND IT HAS A DESCRIPTION
OF WHAT A REAL APOLOGY LOOKS
LIKE.
SO YOU COULD ARGUE IN BOTH THE
CASES YOU SHOWED THAT THERE WAS
AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE FACTS
AND A FULL TAKING OF THE
RESPONSIBILITIES.
WHAT IS TRICKIER THOUGH IS
WHETHER YOU GO BEYOND JUST THE
SYMBOLISM OF THE APOLOGY AND YOU
ACTUALLY TAKE REAL CHANGE TO
CHANGE THE SYSTEM.
I THINK THAT IN THIS CASE THAT
IT'S PROBABLY A LITTLE BIT MORE
STRAIGHTFORWARD WITH THE LGBTQ2
ISSUE.
BUT APOLOGIES FOR THE
RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL SYSTEM, WE'RE
TALKING ABOUT A WHOLESALE CHANGE
IN HOW OUR SYSTEM AND GOVERNMENT
APPROACHES INDIGENOUS PEOPLE.
I THINK OF THE UNIVERSITY OF
VICTORIA PROFESSOR WHO SAYS WE
NEED TO CHANGE OUR COLONIAL
MENTALITY, HOW WE VIEW
INDIGENOUS PEOPLE AS A PROBLEM
TO BE SOLVED AND SO AN APOLOGY
ONLY GOES SO FAR IN TERMS OF
CHANGING THE OUTLOOK AND THE
OUTCOMES FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
IN CANADA.
SO
IT'S SUCH A PARADIGM THAT HAS TO
CHANGE.
>> Rosemary: FOR SURE, SHACHI,
ARE THESE TARGETING THE PEOPLE
WHO HAVE BEEN WRONGED OR AN
APPEAL FOR CANADIANS TO SEE
THEIR GOVERNMENT BE RECOGNISED
AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR
SOMETHING?
>> Interview: IT'S REALLY A
QUESTION OF RISK AND SO IF
YOU'RE A GOVERNMENT, NUMBER ONE,
YOU'RE MOTIVATED BY WANTING TO
DO THE RIGHT THING BUT ALSO
MOTIVATED BY WHERE THE POLITICAL
RISK COMES IN.
FRANKLY, OFTEN THE GREATER RISK
IS BEING
SEEN TO BE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF
THE MOMENT OR ON THE WRONG SIDE
OF HISTORY.
SO, YOU KNOW, GENERALLY
APOLOGIES AREN'T NECESSARILY
VOTE GRABBERS BUT THEY CAN BE
VOTE TAKERS IF THEY'RE NOT DONE
OR IF THEY'RE NOT DONE WELL OR
SINCERELY.
AND AT THE SAME TIME, YOU KNOW,
NOT TO BE TOTALLY CRASS ABOUT
IT, THEY'RE INCREDIBLE
VALIDATING, HEALING, VALUABLE,
FOR THE PEOPLE AND THE
GENERATIONS THAT ARE AFFECTED BY
THESE WRONGDOINGS.
THE BIGGER QUESTION THOUGH --
AND THIS IS WHERE YOU DO TEND TO
HEAR A LITTLE BIT OF PUSHBACK IS
FROM SOME CORNERS WHERE PEOPLE
SAY, WELL, THIS APOLOGY, WHAT'S
NEXT, WHO'S NEXT AND, OF COURSE,
THE CAVEAT OR THE OTHER SIDE TO
THIS COIN IS THAT THERE REALLY
ISN'T NECESSARILY AN END AND YOU
CAN'T DRAW A LINE PAST A CERTAIN
POINT AND SAY, WELL, WE'RE NOT
GOING TO APOLOGIZE ANYMORE,
BECAUSE, GUESS WHAT, VALUES AND
SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG AND
MORALS CHANGE OVER TIME.
WHAT PEOPLE WERE DOING A HUNDRED
YEARS AGO SEEMED VERY NORMAL AND
ACCEPTABLE AND, IN FACT, TO MANY
PEOPLE THE RIGHT THING AT THE
TIME.
SO WE DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'LL BE
APOLOGIZING FOR IN 50 OR A
HUNDRED YEARS.
>> Rosemary: MARIA, I HAVE A
MINUTE LEFT FOR YOU.
>> Interview: I AGREE BUT I
THINK THAT REFLECTION IS
STARTING TO BE MADE AND THIS IS
NOT A NEW PHENOMENON TO HAVE
NATIONAL APOLOGIES AND APOLOGIES
IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS THAT
COME WITH SETTLEMENTS AND IT
STARTED UNDER BRIAN MULRONEY AND
EVERY PRIME MINISTER AFTER THAT
HAS DONE SO.
BUT I THINK THAT FOR CERTAIN
CIRCUMSTANCES, PERHAPS JUSTIN
TRUDEAU HAS MADE A FEW APOLOGIES
IN A ROW AND YOU DO ALREADY SEE
THAT IN SOME MEDIA OR SOME
CHATTER OF
PEOPLE WHO ARE STARTING TO
WONDER IS IT TOO MUCH, IS IT
ENOUGH?
AND THE LINE COULD BE DRAWN IF
THESE PEOPLE ARE STILL AFFECTED
TODAY BY THE WRONGS THAT WERE
DONE TO THEM BUT I THINK THAT
YOU NEED TO ALSO BE CAREFUL
ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT
CONCERNED BY THE APOLOGY, PEOPLE
WHO MIGHT START WONDERING WHEN
IS IT GOING TO END AND PEOPLE
WHO MIGHT THINK THAT YOU DON'T
NECESSARILY NEED TO RE-WRITE
YOUR ENTIRE HISTORY BECAUSE AS
SHACHI SAID SOME THINGS WERE
DONE A HUNDRED YEARS AGO BECAUSE
THAT'S THE WAY THAT THINGS WERE
AT THAT TIME.
SOME HISTORIANS ARGUE THAT MAYBE
YOU CAN'T ERASE YOUR ENTIRE
HISTORY, IT'S PART OF YOUR
HISTORY.
>> Interview: I MEAN, WE
SHOULD SAY -- WE'RE NOT TALKING
ABOUT A HUNDRED YEARS AGO AGO,
WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THINGS THAT
HAPPENED IN OUR OWN HISTORY AND
IN SOME CASES SINCE WE HAVE BEEN
ALIVE.
AND, YEAH, I WOULD --
>> Interview: BUT SOME OF
THESE THINGS WERE A LONG TIME
AGO.
>> Rosemary: RIGHT, BUT THE
LGBT STUFF, THE MILITARY DIDN'T
ALLOW OPENLY GAY PEOPLE UNTIL 19
1992.
>> Interview: THE APOLOGIES
ARE POSSIBLE TODAY BECAUSE TIME
AND OPINION HAVE CHANGED AND
SHIFTED.
SORRY, ROSIE.
>> Rosemary: THANK YOU,
LADIES, THANK YOU, JEN, SHACHI
AND MARIE.
THANK YOU, EVERYBODY.
>> Andrew: GREAT DISCUSSION.
COMING UP... NEW REVELATIONS
FROM THE PARADISE PAPERS.
WHY WOULD A CONTROVERSIAL
SYRIAN-SAUDI BILLIONAIRE CLAIM
TO LIVE IN THIS BASEMENT
APARTMENT IN MONTREAL?
>> Interview: THIS IS NOT THE
BILLIONAIRE LIFESTYLE, UNIT ONE
IN A BUILDING LIKE THIS IN
MONTREAL.
THAT'S A LITTLE UNUSUAL.
>> MR. MULRONEY -- SIR, ABOUT
THE PARADISE PAPERS...
>> Andrew: THAT IS, OF COURSE,
FORMER PRIME MINISTER BRIAN
MULRONEY, HE'S REFUSED TO TALK
IN DETAIL ABOUT A FRIEND OF HIS
WHOSE NAME TURNED UP IN THE LEAK
OF OFFSHORE TAX HAVEN DOCUMENTS
KNOWN AS THE PARADISE PAPERS.
THAT FRIEND IS WAFIC SAÏD.
HE'S WHAT IS KNOWN AS A FIXER.
SAÏD AMASSED A FORTUNE BY MAKING
CONNECTIONS AND BROKERING DEALS.
SECRETIVE BUT WELL KNOWN IN
ELITE CIRCLES FROM RIYADH TO
LONDON.
HIS NAME IS LINKED TO A
CONTROVERSIAL
SAUDI BRITISH ARMS DEAL AND
THANKS TO THE PARADISE PAPERS
FREDERIC ZALAC DISCOVERED SAÏD
HAS SOME CURIOUS CANADIAN
CONNECTIONS.
>> Reporter: IT WAS A
$70 BILLION ARMS DEAL BETWEEN
THE BRITISH AEROSPACE AND SAUDI
ARABIA, THE BIGGEST MILITARY
CONTRACT IN U.K. HISTORY THAT
SAW ADVANCED FIGHTER JETS SOLD
TO THE DESERT KINGDOM.
BUT THAT DEAL BECAME MIRED IN
CONTROVERSY AFTER ALLEGATIONS OF
CORRUPTION PUBLISHED BY "THE
GUARDIAN."
>> Interview: THE WORLD CLAIMS
THAT WE'RE BEING SOLD, WILDLY
OVERPRICED, 30% OR 40%
OVERPRICED.
AND THIS EXCESS MONEY BEING
CHARGED TO THE SAUDIS WAS THEN
DISTRIBUTED IN THE FORM OF
CORRUPT PAYMENTS.
>> Reporter: ACCORDING TO
PUBLISHED REPORTS, MILLIONS WERE
PAID IN SECRET COMMISSIONS TO
SAUDI OFFICIALS AND SYRIAN
BILLIONAIRE WAFIC SAÏD WAS A
CRUCIAL MIDDLE MAN IN THE DEAL.
BY 2004, BRITISH AUTHORITIES
LAUNCHED A CORRUPTION
INVESTIGATION.
AROUND THE SAME TIME WAFIC SAÏD
RECRUITED A FORMER CANADIAN
PRIME MINISTER TO HELP HIM
MANAGE HIS MASSIVE FORTUNE.
HE PAID BRIAN MULRONEY $100,000
A YEAR TO SIT ON THE BOARD OF
SAÏD HOLDINGS, AN INVESTMENT
COMPANY WHICH WAS BASED IN
BERMUDA, A COUNTRY WITH A ZERO
PERCENT TAX RATE.
>> Interview: TO HAVE THIS
INDIVIDUAL AS A FRIEND AND
ASSOCIATE RAISES VERY SERIOUS
ISSUES ABOUT THE JUDGMENT OF
BRIAN MULRONEY.
HE SHOULD HAVE IMMEDIATELY
DISASSOCIATED HIMSELF FROM ANY
INDIVIDUAL WHO IS SEEN AS
INTEGRAL TO THIS AWFUL
TRANSACTION.
>> Reporter: AS BRITISH
OFFICIALS
FOLLOWED THE EVIDENCE WHICH LED
THEM TO WAFIC SAÏD'S SWISS BANK
ACCOUNTS, THE INVESTIGATION
WAS SPIKED BY THEN PRIME
MINISTER TONY BLAIR.
HE WAS PRESSURED BY THE SAUDIS
WHO THREATENED TO CUT OFF
ANTI-TERROR COOPERATION WITH THE
U.K.
>> Interview: IT SEEMS VERY
UNLIKELY TO ME THAT BRIAN
MULRONEY COULDN'T HAVE BEEN
AWARE OF THESE QUITE SENSATIONAL
ALLEGATIONS THAT WE WERE
PUBLISHING DAY-BY-DAY IN "THE
GUARDIAN" TO THE INTERNATIONAL
MEDIA AND WERE PICKED UP ALL
OVER THE WORLD.
>> Question: SIR, ABOUT THE
PARADISE PAPERS...
>> Reporter: TODAY MULRONEY
IS UNBOTHERED BY THESE CLAIMS
AND TELLING RADIO-CANADA IN A
LETTER
THAT WAFIC SAÏD IS AN
OUTSTANDING MAN, A HIGHLY
SUCCESSFUL INVESTOR, AND A
LEADING PHILANTROPIST.
HE'S ALSO A GOOD FRIEND.
BUT THE PARADISE PAPERS REVEAL
ANOTHER SECRET ABOUT THAT GOOD
FRIEND... WE FOUND HIS PASSPORT
WHICH SHOWS THAT HE IS A
CANADIAN CITIZEN.
>> Interview: IT'S VERY
DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND WHY HE
SHOULD BECAUSE HE DOESN'T LIVE
IN CANADA.
HE'S GOT A TAX ADDRESS IN MONACO
BUT HE DOESN'T LIVE THERE, HE
LIVES IN BRITAIN AND HAS A HUGE
HOUSE IN THE BRITISH COUNTRYSIDE
AND A SMALL FLAT IN LONDON'S
MAYFAIR.
SO THIS IS A DISCOVERY THAT
ASTONISHES ME.
>> Reporter: WAFIC SAÏD SAYS
THAT HE ULTIMATELY GOT HIS
CITIZENSHIP THROUGH A CANADIAN
GOVERNMENT PROGRAM MEANT FOR
RICH IMMIGRANT INVESTORS.
BUT SAÏD WOULD HAVE HAD TO HAVE
LIVED IN CANADA THREE YEARS TO
EVENTUALLY BECOME A CANADIAN.
AND HE CLAIMS IN OFFICIAL FILES
THAT HE LIVED IN A MODEST
NEIGHBOURHOOD IN MONTREAL IN A
BASEMENT APARTMENT AT THIS
LOCATION.
>> Interview: THIS IS NOT THE
BILLIONAIRE LIFESTYLE, UNIT ONE
IN A BUILDING LIKE THIS IN
MONTREAL.
THAT'S A LITTLE UNUSUAL.
IT DOES RAISE A FLAG.
WAS THIS TRULY A RESIDENCE?
WAS THIS WHERE THE PERSON
NORMALLY LIVED?
MAYBE, BUT I WOULD HAVE SOME
DOUBTS.
>> Reporter: SAÏD TOLD US THAT
HE GOT HIS CITIZENSHIP LEGALLY
AND LIVED IN CANADA FOR THREE
YEARS.
HE ALSO SAYS THAT HE OFTEN USED
THAT MONTREAL BASEMENT UNIT BUT
GOVERNMENT FILINGS IN THE U.K.
AND NEWSPAPER REPORTS FROM THAT
TIME SUGGEST THAT SAÏD USED
LONDON AS HIS PLACE OF WORK AND
RESIDENCE.
[Applause]
>> MR. WAFIC SAÏD IS A CANADIAN
CITIZEN...
>> Reporter: IN 2015, WAFIC
SAÏD WAS GRANTED AN HONOURARY
DEGREE FROM ST-FRANCOIS XAVIER
UNIVERSITY, AROUND THE SAME TIME
HE DONATED $4 MILLION TO THE NEW
BRIAN MULRONEY INSTITUTE OF
GOVERNMENT.
>> Interview: SO BRIAN
MULRONEY IS KNOWINGLY
PARTICIPATING IN THE PROCESS OF
REHABILITATING THE ARMS DEALER
WHO FACILITATED THE LARGEST MOST
CORRUPT ARMS TRANSACTION IN
HISTORY.
[Applause]

>>> ALSO TONIGHT, A BIG DEBATE
OVER A SIMPLE GREETING, IN
QUEBEC.
POLITICIANS THERE PASSED A
UNANIMOUS MOTION CALLING ON
BUSINESS TODAY'S STOP GREETING
CUSTOMERS IN TWO LANGUAGES WITH
BONJOUR HI, INSTEAD THEY SAY A
SIMPLE, BONJOUR WILL DO.
THE GOAL OF THE MOTION SAY
POLITICIANS, IS TO PROTECT THE
FRENCH LANGUAGE BUT IN MONTREAL,
REACTION WAS MIXED.
>> Interview: I THINK IT'S
RIDICULOUS LUS WE'RE SPENDING
TIME FOCUSED ON SOMEONE SAYS
BONJOUR OR BON JOR HI, BEING
BILINGUAL ISN'T BAD.
>> Interview: I GET IT IN THEY
WANT TO UP HOLD THEIR FRENCH
HERITAGE WHICH IS WHAT THEY'RE
TRYING TO DO.
>> Andrew: WORTH NOTING, THE
MOTION IS MOSTLY SYMBOLIC AND
THERE ARE NO ACTUAL
REPERCUSSIONS FOR SAYING HELLO
IN TWO LANGUAGES THOUGH
LEGISLATE TORS DID SPEND TWO
DAYS DEBATING.
>> 3, 2, 1!
>> Andrew: THIS IS EARLIER
TONIGHT IN BOSTON AS THE CITY
MARKS THE START OF THE CHRISTMAS
SEASON AND THIS YEAR, LIKE EVERY
YEAR, THAT TREE IS A GIFT FROM
NOVIA SCOTIA, HALIFAX AND BOSTON
SHARE A BOND, THAT NEXT WEEK
MARKS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY.
IT WAS A BOND BORN IN THE
TRAGEDY OF THE HALIFAX EXPLOSION
AFTER THAT MARITIME DISASTER
LEFT PEOPLE INJURED, BOSTON
HELPED.
IT'S THE SUBJECT OF A STORY PAUL
HUNTER IS WORKING ON WHICH
BROUGHT HIM TO BOSTON COMMONS
TONIGHT.
>> Reporter: AND WHAT A NIGHT IT
IS HERE IN BOSTON AND THERE IT
IS, THAT IS THE TREE.
THAT IS NOVIA SCOTIA'S GIFT TO
BOSTON, THE ONE THAT COMES EVERY
YEAR AT THIS TIME.
TONIGHT ALL LIT UP IN CHRISTMAS
LIGHTS AND SIGNIFYING THE START
OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON BUT ALSO
IT'S SYMBOLIC OF NOVIA SCOTIA'S
GRATITUDE OF THE CITY OF BOSTON
AND THE PEOPLE OF BOSTON FOR THE
AID BOSTON SENT TO NOVIA SCOTIA,
100 YEARS AGO AFTER THAT
TERRIBLE EXPLOSION IN HALIFAX.
AIDE, MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND
DOCTORS AND NURSES THAT WENT OUT
TO HELP THOSE IN THAT DIRE
CIRCUMSTANCE SO SYMBOLIZEING
THAT BUT IT ALSO SYMBOLIZEING
SOMETHING THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE
DON'T KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT WHICH
IS THE INCREDIBLE NUMBER OF
MEDICAL ADVANCEMENTS THAT CAME
OUT OF THAT TIME, ALL THOSE
DOCTORS AND NURSES FROM BOSTON
THEY LEARNED A LOT IN THAT
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE AND LESSONS
THAT WERE APPLIED AT THE TIME TO
HELP PEOPLE IN NOVIA SCOTIA THEN
BUT ALSO IN THE MONTHS AND YEARS
AND DECADES AFTERWARDS IN FACT
THOSE LESSONS ARE STILL TAUGHT
IN MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN BOSTON TO
THIS DATE SO THIS SYMBOLIZES
THAT AND TRULY IT'S ABOUT
GRATITUDE AND THE CONTINUING
THANKS FOR FOR FOR THE HELP THAT
BOSTON GAVE TO NOVIA SCOTIA 100
YEARS AGO AND IT'S EVIDENCE THAT
GOOD WILL MATTERS AND AS WELL
THAT NOVIA SCOTIA NEVER FORGETS.
PAUL HUNTER, CBC NEWS, BOSTON.
>> Andrew: WE'LL HAVE MORE ON
HALIFAX AND BOSTON'S BOND AND
THE NATIONAL WILL HAVE SPECIAL

ANNIVERSARY OF THE HALIFAX
EXPLOSION NEXT WEDNESDAY.
AND THAT IS IT FOR "THE
NATIONAL" FOR NOVEMBER 30TH,
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING AND GOOD
