We're standing in Noosa Heads, where 51 year old grandfather from the Gold Coast, Phillip Weightman
has just completed one of Australia's toughest events; The Ultra Man. It covers 515 kilometres through the back of the Sunshine Coast
over three days
Phillip Weightman has done the event in honour of his best friend Jason Sell who last year was in a tragic biking accident
Coming off his bike at nearly 80 kilometres an hour in the back of Currumbin, he spent the next 6 months
in a coma and one year after the event
he still needs intensive rehabilitation to get home to his wife Paula Sell.
No stranger to these endurance races Phil has completed 10 full length Ironman triathlons in the part with his latest being the
2015 Hawaii World championships. It was almost 20 years ago
that Jason, and Phil first met and bonded over their love of racing. They'd been training and racing together ever since
and with the help of their four friends and their wives Paula and Samantha, Phil managed to complete the
Ultraman in 28 hours and forty-one minutes all in Jason's honour.
The Thursday morning, and my
daily routine is I get up and have my coffee and I sit and wait for Jayce
and then I go to work at 8 but it was a little bit late
and I didn't think much of if it sometimes he takes a little bit longer out there on the bike, so
but then I had a knock on the door and
one of his Mates said that he had an accident.
Just hope that we can get Jayce back to a
place where he's happy and
you know even if it is in a wheelchair and
Who knows Jason he could become a wheelchair athlete?
Who knows um yeah? It's just making Jayce
comfortable and happy
The motivation behind this race, a good friend of mine, Jason Sell who had a push bike accident in July last year and
he was a superb athlete
superb Iron man ti athlete, he was a Mountain Biker and well known cyclist from the coast
suffered terrible injuries in this push bike accident has been
in Hospital and in Intensive care ever since. He spoke to me about this race, and I thought he was nuts
So I'd like to
Undertake the race and raise awareness for Jason's current situation and also provide some fundraising for Jason and his family, and his wife Paula.
Phillip Weightman has done the event in his honour to help bring awareness to both brain injury and Paula's
situation. If you'd like to help you can enter their gofundme found on our website
