Lions tour: Five key match-ups for the third test between the All Blacks and British and Irish Lions

Lions tour: Five key match-ups for the third test between the All Blacks and British and Irish Lions.

The All Blacks have not lost at Eden Park since 1994. They have also never lost two consecutive tests on New Zealand soil since succumbing to the Springboks in 1998.

So the pressure is on ahead of the third test against the Lions on Saturday night. Here are some match-ups to ponder during the countdown. JORDIE BARRETT v LIAM WILLIAMS.

Twelve months ago Barrett was chugging around for his Lincoln University club in the Christchurch metro competition, a lanky giant offering heaps of gas in the backline.

Like many young students his mind might have been cluttered with trivial matters; whether the post-match showers were still going to be hot, if anyone had remembered to toss the beers in a bucket of ice, or where the best party was going to be held that evening.

It is no exaggeration to say he might have a bit more to worry about on Saturday night. Barrett, in his first start in a test, has been listed at fullback.

In addition to pocketing the bombs fired his way, he will be expected to shout all night long at his wings Israel Dagg and Julian Savea to ensure no-one allows space to be exploited in the backfield.

Yes, he must also be prepared to have a crack on attack.

[CC/Subs] Darkthrone - The Interview - Chapter 1: Soulside Journey (from Preparing for War boxset) - Duration: 14:05.

NOCTURNO CULTO: Fenriz, can you say something about Soulside Journey for us

FENRIZ: What I remember was, we did a live recording in '89

We sent that around to some companies

Peaceville signed us...

...on this live recording, and then we signed a deal somewhat late '89-'90

All there was for us to do was

make new songs and rehearse for a new album

And we asked for help

'cause we didn't have a big budget to deal with

So we thought, OK, I've been in contact with Nihilist / Entombed guys since '87

and we decided to go over there to Stockholm and record the album there

The Soulside Journey album

It was probably, like, September '90

It was a small studio

We had all our technical death/horror metal

well on our way

Our songs were just... through-and-through

rehearsed well-enough

This was our first time in a recording studio

First time making a fucking album, so...

We thought, maybe we'd need some help with the guitar sound or something

Uffe from Entombed helped us there

I don't really remember much from the recording session, though...

We were just hanging around Stockholm

basically, being in the studio every fucking day

I guess, we did the drum set first

I remember I had some rototoms that are now famous

The guy from Sunlight tried to mic from, like, on top

which would give the sound of ting.. tink... ting... tink...

I'm like, sorry, hehe...

Try to mic those roto... on the back side

and then suddenly I had the TUFF-TUFF-TUFF stuff we needed

Nocturno Culto can fill you in later on some of the...

...guitar strategy, whatever...

But we had the material

really clearly done

and rehearsed before we went to the studio

we just had to record it in, like, what, 5-6 days

I guess...

The Sunlight Studio that we entered was some sort of

Scandinavian version of...

...you know, the Morrisound down in Florida

Later, we thought that this was not the best choice we could have done but...

For me, Soulside Journey is still a bona fide solid fucking death metal album

When it comes to Darkthrone, we were always all about the riffs

And the riffs were always important for us

and...

...the whole ordeal of, like, knitting the songs together

to make, like, a verse, refrain, whatever

it was never really important for us

We just had what we thought, and what I feel is, killer riffs

and we just... riff upon riff upon riff

Sort of a rifforama, that was the expression used a lot in speed and thrash metal...

...years before.

1990, September, we recorded Soulside Journey

NOCTURNO CULTO: I also remember being very young

the first album, you know. FENRIZ: Oh, yeah!

NOCTURNO CULTO: Very exciting, indeed!

FENRIZ: Absolutely. For me, personally.

I never had

any ambition besides that of

getting a fucking record deal, so...

when Peaceville offered us a deal in late '89-early '90

it was a fucking dream-come-true, I mean

Let's face the facts

We were really into Chris Reifert stuff

and Autopsy

and that was, like, the label we wanted to be on

And we were so dedicated to death metal at the time

Although, we saw death metal around us...

It's just...

...more or less, wearing shorts and being politically correct and all that shit

We really didn't feel comfortable about that

FENRIZ: Soulside Fucking Journey! What do you remember?

NOCTURNO CULTO: I remember...

...being young

I remember...

...we were in Stockholm, recording Soulside Journey

I was under a big influence of the first Death album at the time

which I... I mean, the solos on the Scream Bloody Gore album...

...was...

...one of the inspiration sources for me to do the solos on Soulside Journey

which was...

...probably the most structured solos we ever had

And listening to a lot of death metal

Like, I mean, like I said

the first Death album was really a great inspiration for me to...

...in the Soulside Journey, the Soulside Journey era

It's, like, Slayer, as well,

had a great influence on me, as a person

on Soulside Journey, at the time

I remember being in Stockholm

It was probably the only goal Darkthrone ever had was to...

...to record an album

After we did the first album, we didn't have any goals like...

...musicians, you know

We didn't strive for anything

But, to finally to get to release a full-length album,

to get it on vinyl, to get it on CD was really...

...big...

...for me

Also...

remember rehearsing a lot

It was in a time when

when we developed our musical...

...musician skills on the guitars, the drums, etc.

I guess we were only about 18-19 years old when we did that album

It was, it was a very...

It was a cool time, probably

I don't remember much, since...

...since I was...

...not in charge by any means with Darkthrone, as...

I mean, Fenriz was in charge of Darkthrone since the beginning and...

...throughout all the Peaceville albums

Was, like...

But we were all close companions and...

So, all the things around Soulside Journey

with the release, I didn't have anything to do with that, I mean, Fenriz did that...

...very well

Also, the cover on the Soulside Journey was actually a painting

done exclusively for that album

I also saw the artwork and the painting

when I was visiting Peaceville in '92

It's really good, it's a fucking huge painting

Really great...

You know, hanging around in Stockholm, as he said

I think...

...I could have got...

...something more out of it if I wanted to

but, I think, I was just fucking far-out at that time in many ways, you know

FENRIZ: Already then?

NOCTURNO CULTO: Yeah, already then, I was...

I didn't feel comfortable, it was like...

FENRIZ: Who the fuck feels comfortable in extreme metal?

NOCTURNO CULTO: No, it's like...

But, it was interesting times, I remember

Soulside Journey came out pretty well

sound-wise, as well

We did drag in some of the Entombed members

to make sure we didn't sound like them

Very, very important, because

Entombed had done a great album in Sunlight Studio and...

...we didn't want to sound like them, and, actually, from...

I remember...

Uffe did some pre-production of the guitar sound

It sounded really good

FENRIZ: Here's where I go like [imitates guitar]

NOCTURNO CULTO: It was very good, and he helped us

Because...

...we didn't have any experience, we just rehearsed with our old equipment,

which we thought was very good

FENRIZ: Uffe and Sunlight Studios helped us sound like

every other death metal band at the time

Oh, it's a good product, though

NOCTURNO CULTO: Yeah, it's a good product, and...

Yeah, I mean, also, the solos at the time, you know

I was very inspired by Death's first album,

which was fucking brilliant,

and still is one of my fave albums

And one of the best remarks I actually did get

to that solos was from Uffe

Uffe, from Entombed, he said that,

"I get a Scream Bloody Gore feeling"

Oh, yeah!

I mean, it's a...

Because I never thought of myself as a solo guitarist, you know

more like Malcolm Young than Angus Young

FENRIZ: Hahaha! Ooh! I never knew that about solo mentioning from you

NOCTURNO CULTO: No, it's a... but... yeah, I think...

So, that's from my view of the whole thing

I mean...

We also... I mean... Dag Nilsen

did also a lot of work on Soulside Journey riffs and stuff like that

I can't really remember what influence he did have on the production

I think we all were very very involved at the time

We all had something to say about everything

And, luckily, we didn't ending up hating each other, so early...

FENRIZ: No, not after that album

NOCTURNO CULTO: Nope

So, yeah, I mean, Soulside Journey, it's a very...

It was a good experience

Since we were all into death metal at the time

And then, of course, being so young when we started in... I was...

I joined Darkthrone in, I would say, March-April '88

FENRIZ: Yeah!

NOCTURNO CULTO: I mean, you were very... we wanted to develop as musicians

and develop our skills

So, I mean, most of the time went to practice, you know

Practice all the time

So, yep, that pretty much concludes my vision around Soulside Journey

It's a... it was our first album

Hollywood Isn't Waiting Around For Novice Screenplays by Scott Kirkpatrick - Duration: 4:33.

Film Courage: I've heard you say something about 'the big secret that never gets told

to anyone outside of Hollywood is that most films are greenlit before the final script

is made.'

So do tell.

Because for a lot of people who aren't from here or aren't familiar with the business,

I think they'd be sort of shocked to know this?

Scott Kirkpatrick: It's important to remember that movies and TV shows cost an incredible

amount of money to produce.

And if there is nobody to watch it on the backside or to transact upon it, on iTunes

or at a movie theater, then there is not much of a point in doing that.

And there is an even more expensive aspect to producing something which is marketing

it and getting it out in front of people so they know it exists.

So that when they're interested in seeing it and ready to buy tickets or download it

behind a paywall and pay money for it, they have the ability to do it and they're ready

to do it right away.

That's the financial end.

People in my position…from where I am working all the way up to top executives at studios,

what those people (the end-users) want to see is really, really important.

And that is kind of where we're thinking because if the end-users are interested in

seeing it, then international countries would be interested in also having access to it.

And they would be willing to invest money to have access to it early which is where

the whole pre-sale games comes into play.

Or a TV channel here in the US, if they know their audience want something very specific

they will work to have that produced on their network and they will kind of work backwards,

first finding out what kind of project its got to be, the types of people who have to

be in it, and then working their way backwards to get to the point of actually drafting writing

and creating and all that.

On the big scale for these major, major productions at the studio level of a major network level,

that's why they go for things like major franchises or very well-known books or very

well known media properties are doing re-makes.

There is already an audience there.

They kind of have an estimate of how it's going to get from Point A to Point B and that

is where the business side of it really plays.

It's what is it, how is it going to work, where is the money coming from, and who is

going to get paid what to make this whole process happen?

That's got to all be figured out before you really hone in on the right script.

Most screenwriting books approach it as: you write a story and it evolves into a movie.

And this whole industry doesn't exist with people twiddling their thumbs, waiting for

the right script to drop into their hands.

It works in the opposite direction which is we know we need this type of content to be

successful.

We have certain channels or certain platforms that we have to cater with content so that's

the stuff we're going to be looking for as finished content or we'll go make it

ourselves.

That's what MarVista did really well.

In [Scott's book] Writing for the Greenlight, the whole first chapter is exactly about that

idea.

I used to go to the Cannes Film Festival, we used to go to Berlin (to the major film

festivals).

I'd meet with my buyers.

We'd have a slate of movies that we were going to pitch and we would see which ones

had traction, which ones didn't.

We had a reputation for being able to produce or deliver movies that would get from Point

A to Point B and be delivered on time and be quality productions.

We'd get the pre-sales first and then we'd go back and say "Okay, write a movie based

on the pre-sales."

Write a movie based on the poster we invented to sell the pre-sales."

That's how it really works.

Content is developed from the inside out.

The occasional one-off to that or the occasional exclusion is when major A-list talent who

already have a very well-established career come up with unique ideas, but frankly they

can walk into CAA or a top executives office in town (whatever) and say "Here's an

idea I'm thinking of" and it can be greenlit right on the spot in the sense that they can

movie forward with it.
