so if I had to guess I would say that the graduating class from my high school
produced more full time drug dealers than it did University students but for
its lack of academic success my school did very well in one area and that was
motivational posters in the library I'm sure you've seen the one right
aim for the moon even if you miss you'll land among the stars okay I'm an
astronaut right imagine this you're an astronaut you're on it you're on an
Apollo mission you're heading towards the moon you miss the moon and landing
command or base command is like don't worry about this one Dan you're you're
going to land among the stars awesome that's that's going to work out great
we've definitely packed for that we got we got the food and oxygen and the heats
not going to be a problem we get there right don't worry dance is the base
command we saw this on a library poster once you're going to be fine
now personally I would like to blame this poster for a lot of the
difficulties I experienced at mistakes I made in earlier parts of my career now
setting a big ambitious goal is awesome and there's one of the things that I
really would encourage people to do is set a goal that's going to motivate you
it's going to pull you along and something that you'll figure out the
waste and often people get stuck up of thinking well you know I don't want to
set this goal because I don't know how to get there that's the whole point of
setting the goal you decide what you want and then you figure out how you're
going to get there I think it's really important that you
set a goal that you set your destination to align with what you're willing to put
in and what you're willing to sacrifice you look at the the online world the
influences there's a few different extremes of this right you have people
who are hey I work four hours a week just chilling on the beach man like Baja
my course and you'll get rich kind of dudes right and they're selling a
certain lifestyle which none of them actually do those guys all work like 60
hour weeks but they sell the dream then you have kind of the other extreme which
is like your were like your game changers not the people who call
themselves game changers but the people who are actually game changers who are
on the cutting edges of science of technology of whatever
and they they have a vision of want to change the world right and those
different lives require and then you have well you have
people in between where I'd probably put myself is like I work hard I have
ambition but I'm sorry Gary Vaynerchuk I'm not looking to look like you when
I'm in my forties I'd like to maintain a little bit of my health and so seven
days a week for the next 20 years is not really in my work schedule planned so
you have these different levels and you've got to be honest with yourself
about what you're willing to put in and how many years you're willing to
sacrifice to get where you want to go if you want to be a real gamechanger you
want to create a tech company that's going to change the world
awesome know that you may spend the next 10 to 15 years grinding it out obsessed
with work and if you're wired that way where that's what you want to do do that
it'll be awesome you'll make your dream company it'll be great
but if you're leaning like if you're if the thrill of the challenge if the
hustle if the grind isn't appealing to you you're more like oh no you like the
guy in the hammock you know the 4-hour workweek guy but I read a lot of
entrepreneur bucks you got to be honest with yourself if that's your outcome of
more lifestyle business you know maybe working 20 hours a week taking care of
your family earning good money having the freedom to travel awesome that's
your choice that's cool shift your goals to align with that right don't talk
about how you want to you know earn $20,000 a month passive income and your
first year kind of working for yourself don't have these like out there goal set
realistic goals to get you there and I think the problem with the shoot for the
movement and the Stars whole philosophy is what I found with myself at least is
when I've had really lofty goals you end up taking a different strategy to get
there then you would if you had a more moderate strategy so if you if you have
a goal of I want to make $5,000 a month income within 18 months so that I can
travel and you know do whatever that's very easy to come up with a strategy to
do that if that's your only goal we can get you there you can
come up with a plan that will be pretty foolproof if you put in your time every
week you you work through you improve you put in the effort you stay
disciplined you'll get there but if you say you want to get to $50,000 a month
income or some other level you're going to have a very different plan for
getting there that's going to probably require a little more risk-taking a
little more sacrifice and if you don't hit that it doesn't mean you're going to
land in the 5000 or the ten thousand range necessarily and I totally
appreciate there's different opinions on this and everyone's situation is
different but what I found for myself is having too lofty of a goal early on when
you're just kind of getting your bearings when you're figuring out the
business world and all that it can be overwhelming it can be intimidating it
can lead to a lot of overwhelm because you see this big goal you're like I
don't know how I'll ever get there so it ends up deflating you and can really
slow down that progress ironically then making you miss I don't know if I Ronix
the right word there but you end up missing that goal of the 50,000 because
you get so overwhelmed by that big goal on the other note if you start off with
okay let's get to 5,000 in 18 months and you do that
then you feel really great about yourself and you have some more freedom
you have some more time you have experience then you're like all right
let's get to 10,000 in eighteen more months now you're at a trajectory where
with exponential growth let's say you just grow that income then 20% of a year
you do that math you're in a very good spot pretty quickly right and so setting
a I don't like the word realistic but we're going to use it here anyhow so I
think I'd have a realistic goal where you can develop a concrete plan and get
to may end up having a lot more positive momentum for you and help you achieve
that build your confidence build yourself and keep going then at a
certain point when you have your your discipline your business skills your
personality develop to that point it might make sense to pull that trigger
and set a huge goal right some really lofty goal and push yourself there but
when you're just starting out and you don't really know what to do yet you're
getting into like freelancing or online business and you don't really know
exactly what to be doing how it all works you're still learn
about yourself you're still maybe dealing with issues around focus or or
feeling kind of down on some days about sort of stuff if you set some massive
ambitious goal I think it's going to make it worse it's going to make it
harder to focus it's going to make it harder to kind of keep your mood up and
all that then if you set a goal that you can keep achieving and getting to and
then gradually grow that and in the end end up hitting that that huge mark
because you've made these consistent steps and it actually gets you there
rather than to always swinging for the fences missing swing for the fences
missing I'm sure there's a baseball analogy in here I just don't know enough
about baseball to make it but you know if any sports fans are watching you can
share it at the comments so when you're just starting out especially set a goal
that you're going to be able to get to and that's going to give you a great
foundation of confidence and of income to then build from and keep going
starting off with a really high goal when you don't really know what you're
doing yet he's just going to be discouraging and actually end up holding
you back a lot for most people right occasionally is different but I found
that was my own experience when I was starting out sometimes I said too big of
goals i overextended myself and then I ended up feeling really down when I
didn't get those and it created sort of a negative cycle and I wish I had have
set something a little more consistent and and hit bad and then hit it again it
kept growing that way rather than these big ups and downs and all that you
enjoyed this you want to follow along in terms of entrepreneurship personal
development and location independence and do subscribe to the channel and I'll
catch you in another video soon
