Tributes pour in for Swiss pop music pioneer - Duration: 6:58.
Polo Hofer was more than a musician, he was a pioneer, a provocateur,
the inventor of Swiss dialect rock.
He was rightly nicknamed National Polo.
Everyone sings along with his songs.
Polo Hofer was born in 1945 and named Urs.
He grew up with three brothers.
Two of them are pictured here.
His parents ran a clothes shop.
He was a scout: a key period of his life.
He was given his scout name 'Polo' right next to this castle.
My parents had a clothes store,
where they displayed very fashionable
polo shirts in the shop window.
So this name inspired the scout leader.
Yes, and I am probably the only scout
to use his scout name into old age.
It even became a brand name, in a way.
At scout shows he imitated Louis Armstrong,
shaking off his shyness.
He dreamed of a career as a singer, and made music.
His father wanted him to train as a hand lithographer.
Secretly, he continued to play in a band.
His father was unhappy about it.
He said, "You are in the wrong place entirely."
And I said, "No, I'm playing in this band now."
I had stood in for a drummer for a week.
That was in a nightclub in Interlaken with a strip show.
He thought it was wrong
for an 18-year-old to be in a place like that.
He had me arrested in front of everyone
because I refused to leave the stage.
That made me so angry
that I didn't speak to him for ten years.
He continued to work singlemindedly at his music career.
with his first band, The Jetmen,
he played in clubs at home and abroad, singing in English.
But the aspiring star's career was going nowhere.
He refused to return a keyboard belonging to a former band member,
and sold another musician's drums.
Polo had to go to jail.
On lonely nights in my cell, I said to myself:
"It can't go on like this. It has to change."
And then I had the idea of setting up a dialect band.
That didn't yet exist.
And I knew it had to be called Rumpelstilz.
After his release from jail in 1971, Hofer founded Rumpelstilz.
They made a breakthrough with "Teddybär"(teddy bear)
and catapulted themselves to the top of the charts with with "Kiosk".
In 1984 he founded the "Schmetterband".
They released 18 albums,
and had various hits like "Giggerig" or "Stüehle wäg".
With the song "Alperose" they made it to the top of the charts in 1985.
"Alperose" was voted the biggest Swiss hit of all time in 2008,
a song that seems to have a place in everybody's heart.
It's May. I'm sitting on a bench at the edge of the forest,
and three, four classes pass me and sing "Alperose".
This is touching.
I never thought
this was the stuff of hiking songs.
He not only sang, he also composed and acted in films:
like the movie "Die Nagelprobe" (the acid test).
And he painted. A kind of meditation for him.
It wasn't just his artistic work that was intense,
but his lifestyle in general.
Drugs and alcohol were his constant companions.
He was an ardent campaigner for legalising cannabis.
This is, of course, also
a home remedy for all sorts of problems.
Then you can save on aspirins.
His excessive lifestyle brought him to his limits again and again.
He lived in the fast lane.
He only discussed his problems with a few people,
like Isabelle Hediger.
She was his partner for seven years.
She died from cancer at 36.
In 1997 he married his second great love,
Alice, owner of a coffin business.
She comes from the same culture as me.
She is simply wise and, yes, she is my big love.
Hofer's health was deteriorating.
He rarely performed.
When he was voted Swiss of the Year in 2015, he looked drawn,
but still his humour shone through.
I don't believe it! What's all this?
I'm very very very happy.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, a thousand times.
In August 2016, he announced that he had incurable lung cancer.
He withdrew from the public eye.
It was a year before
the 72-year-old appeared in public again.
The reason: the inauguration of a life-size Polo Hofer statue.
I'm really pleased.
I couldn't be more pleased if I got the Walo prize.
The rocker was visibly weakened,
yet he was funny and confident.
Do you ever think about the afterlife?
I'm just curious to see what happens,
when you step over to the other side.
Are you afraid? No, I'm curious.
Polo Hofer influenced the Swiss cultural scene for 50 years.
His work has long been a part of the Swiss identity.

My name is Jan-Henrik Herrig, and I am from Germany,
I study energy science in Duisburg and now I am here for 1 month of an
internship at the Wigner Research Centre.
For me the aim of my internship is definitely
to get an insight in what is the job as a physicist, how does it look like, what is
the daily work and as well I am really interested to learn more about fusion
and since right now my task is to work with actual data from Wendestein 7-X.
For me this is a great opportunity to learn more about of my favourite
type of fusion device the stellarator and also to learn more about
the physics behind it.
I really like to be here, and at the beginning I was a bit afraid because
obviously I am not fluent in Hungarian and I was worriing about how I will get
along with everyone but I was really positively surprised, I mean
of course research like this is very international and everyone speaks really
good English here and also in the coffee breaks of course sometimes
there are some conversations in Hungarian but since I am already
studying Hungarian for nearly a year so I kinda take it like a training
to listen to some Hungarian conversations but most of the
conversations are in English so I am perfectly fine and I really like
the athmosphere over here.
I think what I will take back from internship will
definitely be how research center like this works so how is it to work in such
a working group how is the communication and also some skills concerning
analyzing data and working with data and in programming language because that's
something I didn't have that much experience beforehand but even right now
after a few days here I feel way safer in that and I feel like I already learned a lot.
