- A reading from the second book of Kings.
One day, Elisha came to Shunem,
where there was a woman of influence
who urged him to dine with her.
Afterward, whenever he passed by,
he used to stop there to dine.
So she said to her husband,
"I know that Elisha is a holy man of God.
"Since he visits us often, let us arrange a little room
"on the roof and furnish it for him with a bed,
"table, chair, and lamp,
"so that when he comes to us, he can stay there."
Sometime later, Elisha arrived
and stayed in the room overnight.
Later, Elisha asked, "Can something be done for her?"
His servant, Gehazi, answered, "Yes.
"She has no son, and her husband is getting on in years."
Elisha said, "Call her."
When the woman had been called and stood at the door,
Elisha promised, "This time next year,
"you'll be fondling a baby son."

Brothers and sister, are you unaware
that we were baptized into Christ Jesus?
We were baptized into his death?
We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death,
so that just as Christ raised from the dead
by the glory of the Father,
we, too, might live in newness of life.
If, then, we have died with Christ,
we believe we shall also live with him.
We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more.
Death no longer has power over him.
As to his death, he died to sin once and for all.
As to his life, he lives for God.
Consequently, you, too, must think of yourselves
as dead to sin and living for God
in Christ Jesus.

"Whoever loves father or mother more than me
"is not worthy of me,
"and whoever loves son or daughter more than me
"is not worthy of me,
"and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me
"is not worthy of me.
"Whoever finds his life will lose it,
"and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
"Whoever receives you receives me,
"and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
"Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet
"will receive a prophet's reward,
"and whoever receives a righteous man
"because he is a righteous man,
"he will receive a righteous man reward.
"And whoever gives only a cup of cold water
"to one of these little ones to drink,
"because the little one is a disciple,
"amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward."
The gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praised be the Lord Jesus Christ.
- We are continuing with Jesus' instruction to his apostles
on what is meant to be a disciple of Christ
in Saint Matthew's gospel.
Demands Jesus makes on his close followers are very harsh.
They must put him first, before everything else,
even before the closest family relationships.
This is not easy for anyone,
and I'm sure, when people heard him say this,
they just walked away.
Now, many people have been walking away from Jesus
all down through the centuries.
Actually, Matthew's account is not as harsh as Luke's,
who records Jesus as saying, "If any man comes to me
"without hating his father, mother, wife, and children,
"he cannot be as my disciple."
This is pretty devastating, and almost cruel.
Matthew's version is a little softer,
but it makes the exact same point,
so why does Jesus come out with statements like this?
Why does he place such severe demands on his followers?
Why does he seem to speak against the intimate family ties?
It's not easy to answer these questions,
but we might say, in some cases, even today,
being a disciple of Christ might mean
you have to break family ties.
I have come across people in my priesthood,
because they have become Catholic,
their families have disowned them.
It's all, of course, of a question of priorities,
and Jesus is not saying you must cut yourself off
from your family, from your friends.
What he is saying, if you're forced to choose
between your family and friends and God, choose God.
We have heard the words of Jesus in the gospel today,
and they challenge us, to the very core of our being.
There are many people and attitudes and things
that pull us away from the values of the gospel.
Our task is to stand fast, hold on,
and keep Christ as the center of our lives.
This is not easy, and that's why,
after saying anyone who prefers son or daughter
is not worthy of me, we find the words
anyone who does not take up his cross and follow on me
in my footsteps is not worthy of me.
This means that it might sometimes be difficult
to be a follower of Jesus,
but whatever decisions we face in life,
we can generally find that there are consequences
for these decisions,
that we either walk towards Christ, or away from Christ,
but we know what the direction of the greatest rewards is,
and that's to have a relationship with the Lord.
We're often caught unaware of how small acts of kindness,
shown to others, reaps great rewards.
It's only after years later that people point out
the good that we have done.
When we perform acts of kindness,
we generally do that because of our faith.
We're kind to strangers among us,
and see that they are a child of God,
and we treat them as such.
We value them, because they're valued in God's eyes.
But how do we link these two things together?
Choosing Christ above even the closest members
of our family and performing acts of kindness?
Well, in each case, it's a choice.
Do we choose to follow Jesus or not?
In every case, we ought to choose Christ and his gospel.
Choosing anything other than Christ
means settling for second best.
Choosing something else over Christ
means making a bad choice.
The church teaches us that we're to keep Christ
as the center of our life,
to do the right thing.
Small acts of kindness, they might be something small,
they might be large, but they go through
and they show that we are a Christian,
that we're living our relationship.
We need to ask ourselves,
are we walking to Christ or away from Christ?
Because of our baptism,
we can make the choice to follow Jesus.
Let us grow in the faith that has started
with our baptism, to make the right choice to follow Jesus.
Let us treat each other with dignity and respect,
especially our family and our friends,
to treat them with kindness, the way Jesus treats us.
Using the example of Christ and the gospel to help us,
may we truly be his disciple, loving God, and loving others.
Amen.
And let us stand up.
And together we say I believe in God, the Father almighty.
- [All] Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day, he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty.
From there, He will come to judge the living and the dead.
