The Liquorice Equator - Duration: 5:03.
The subject for this video was suggested by Dominik, one of my patrons.
If you'd like to help me out with my videos and maybe see your name in the credits,

But first, the video.
Germany, of course, is a single country,
one nation united in a common history and culture, right?
Well, not really.
It's not in any danger of falling apart, despite a small number of Bavarians
who would like to break free from what they call "Prussia";
but there are many ways of dividing it.
For example, there is something called the "Aldi Equator":
it's not really an equator, but they call it that.
You see, there are two different Aldis: one in the north and one in the south.
And they're not quite the same.
After the Second World War,
brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht took over their father's little grocery store
and set about creating the commercial behemoth we know today.
But in 1961 they fell out over whether or not to sell cigarettes,
and so created the Aldi Equator.
Another "equator" is more interesting to me,
and it involves the German word for "apple",
which, as every student of the language knows, is "Apfel".
At least, it is in standard German,
but the old regional variations of the language are still very much alive.
One way to divide them is between dialects that have a "ff" sound in their word for "apple",
and those that don't.
Linguists call this an isogloss,
but this one is often known as the "Apple Equator".
There's also a "White Sausage Equator",
which divides Germany into areas where the lightly-cooked white sausage is eaten,
and those where it isn't.
Unbelieveably, though, there is a fierce argument
over where to draw the line.
Some say it's the river Main,
some that it's the 49th parallel,
some that it's the river Danube,
and some that it's within 100 km of Munich.
But there is one "equator" I didn't know about until Dominik suggested it:
the Liquorice Equator.
Liquorice is far more popular in the north and west of Germany,
especially in Lower Saxony.
And in researching this subject,
I found different methods of mapping the popularity of liquorice:
this is just one of them.
But they all broadly agree that the north-west is Liquorice Land.
And this is why, when North Germans make their way south,
the routinely complain that they cannot find liquorice —
especially the less sweet types.
One manufacturer of liquorice confectionary, Katjes,
has the sales figures to prove the point:
they sell more than 80% of their liquorice
in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.
There are at least two theories to explain this phenomenon.
One is that northern Germany is closer to the sea,
and so the air, and therefore a lot of the food, has a salty tang.
And so northerners are more used to the slightly salty taste of liquorice,
while southerners find it quite off-putting.
That theory, though, doesn't explain
why liquorice isn't so popular in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania,
which is on the Baltic coast.
The second is that since liquorice has to be imported from the Orient,
it first became known in coastal regions;
and so people living nearer the coast have simply had more time to acquire the taste.
And in former times, when food was sometimes hard to come by,
chewing on a piece of liquorice would help stave off the hunger pangs.
But that doesn't explain why Bavarians are so notoriously anti-liquorice:
in the Middle Ages, liquorice plants were actually cultivated in Bavaria —
and they're still grown today, near Bamberg.
The consensus among the experts seems to be:
nobody really knows.
But that's okay: I'm from England and I like liquorice;
my wife is from Bavaria and hates it.
So...
...all the more for me!
Assuming I can find it in the shops, of course.

A message for you / un mensaje para ti - Duration: 5:49.
I'm so glad that you can keep me company
and that's because I wan to tell you about something
that I'm pretty sure that you've heard of many times in your life
I bet that many times in your life someone has talked to you about love
we hear love songs, in TV we watch soap operas, movies, even in action movies, there's always love involved
But I want to talk to you about a different kind of love
listen
There once was a man that created guitars
and he created them with love, passion, and he made them
He polished them, added the strings, he made the guitars beautiful.
he loved all his guitars
but, something happened, one day the guitars started to sound bad
the chords didn't sound good, they couldn't follow the melody, they just sounded bad
and it was decided that all the guitars all over had to be destroyed
and the guitar created said: "this cannot be...my guitars, my creation, how can this be possible if I love them"
he thought and analyzed the situation and said: "okay"
he said: "instead of destroying the guitars, I, their creator, will die for them"
and you might think that this sounds illogical
that the creator of the guitars would die for them
it WAS easier to destroy those guitars, and make new, better ones
but no
he loved them, and he decided to die for them
and this story is not far from what God actually did for us
what Jesus did for us in the Calvary's cross
the creator of all mankind decided to die for it
because what the sin did, that separated us from the Lord was not important to Him
he decided to die for his creation so that we could have the opportunity to be closer again to him
so that the creation could have the chance to get back into melody
to once again play better chords, to refine itself
and that was the greatest gift God could've done for us
it was the biggest expression of love in mankind's history
there hasn't been a greater act of love than that one
and the bible says so in John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
the only thing that we have to do is believe
is to accept that love
in that cross, you died for me...
even when I don't deserve, that you love me like this
there you showed, your fidelity
and now you're clothed in glory and majesty
and you gave me life, you showed me to love
forever at your side, I want to walk
and you gave me life, you showed me to love
forever at your side, I want to walk
how much love, at the cross
the savior had spilled
how much mercy, grace and forgiveness
how much love, at the cross
the savior had spilled
how much mercy, grace and forgiveness
there you gave me salvation
my precious Lord
He died there for you and for me, accept that love
God bless you!

Recording modes in Cubase 9 for Beginners - Duration: 5:45.
To be able to record, you must record-enable the tracks on which you want to record.
To record-enable, a track, activate Record Enable in the track list, in the Inspector,
or in the MixConsole.
You can record in a cycle, that is, you can record a selected section repeatedly.
A cycle is set up with the left and right locators.
First, click the Cycle on the Transport panel to activate cycle mode.
As soon as the project cursor reaches the right locator, it jumps back to the left locator
and continues recording a new lap.
The results of cycle recording depend on the selected record mode.
Make sure to set up your tempo and time signature settings before recording by going over the
transport bar and typing in the numbers.
Setting up the tempo of your song is essential to configure the metronome so you ge taccess
to the precount and recording click.
Pre count is a set of clicks that comes before the actual recording playback to ensure that
the musician will adjust to the tempo of the song allowing him to play in sync from the
first beat.
To configure the metronome and pre count clicks, left click on the metronome button while holding
the CTRL key on your keyboard.
This opens up the metronome setup dialog wich is divided into three sections.
You can configure the amount of bars the precount will count before starting recording on the
precount options.
You can also alter pitch and volume of each click of the metronome by going over to the
click outputs tab.
The Common Record Modes determine what happens if you click Record during an audio or MIDI
recording.
Punch In/Out: the recording is stopped.
Re-Record: the recording is reinitiated, the events are removed and recording is restarted
from the exact same position.
Start Recording at Cursor: recording starts from the cursor position.
Start Recording at Left Locator/Punch In Position: recording starts from the left locator.
By selecting an Audio Record Mode you decide what happens to your recording and to any
existing events on the track where you are recording.
This is necessary because you will not always record on an empty track.
There may be situations where you record over existing events, especially in cycle mode.
Keep History Existing: events or portions of events that are overlapped by a new recording
are kept.
Cycle History + Replace Existing: events or portions of events that are overlapped by
a new recording are replaced by the new recording.
However, if you record in cycle mode, all takes from the current cycle recording are
kept.
Replace Existing: events or portions of events that are overlapped by a new recording are
replaced by the last recorded take.
By selecting a MIDI Record Mode you decide what happens to any existing parts on the
track where you are recording.
MIDI tracks can play back all events in overlapping parts.
If you record several parts in the same locations or move parts so that they overlap, you will
hear the events in all parts.
Existing parts that are overlapped by a new recording are kept.
The new recording is saved as a new part.
Merge Existing events in parts that are overlapped by a new recording are kept.
The newly recorded events are added to the existing part.
Replace Existing events in parts that are overlapped by a new recording are replaced.
When you record MIDI in cycle mode, the result not only depends on the MIDI record mode but
also on the cycle record mode that is selected in the MIDI Cycle Record Mode section.
Mix: For each completed lap, everything you record is added to what was previously recorded.
This is useful for building up rhythm patterns.
Overwrite: As soon as you play a MIDI note or send any MIDI message, all MIDI that you
have recorded on previous laps is overwritten from that point.
Make sure that you stop playing before the next lap begins.
Otherwise, you will overwrite the entire take.
Keep Last: Each completed lap replaces the previously recorded lap.
If you deactivate recording or press Stop before the cursor reaches the right locator,
the previous take will be kept.
If you do not play or input any MIDI during a lap, nothing happens, and the previous take
will be kept.
Stacked: Each recorded cycle lap is turned into a separate MIDI part, and the track is
divided into lanes, one for each cycle lap.
The parts are stacked above each other, each on a different lane.
All takes but the last one is muted.
Mix Stacked: Same as Stacked, but parts are not muted.
Cubase can automatically quantize MIDI notes on recording.
The notes that you record are automatically quantized according to the quantize settings.
On the next video, you'll be learning all about the Pool inside Cubase.
See you there.
