- Hey, hey! This is Conor, the Language Tsar, and in this video I'm gonna
give you my five tips for how to beat
jet lag.
So what is jet lag exactly?
It is basically fatigue from flying and changing time zones.
It's basically a temporary disruption of the body's internal clock.
So travelers who tend to have a really rigid schedule suffer from the most
from jet lag and that's because
the body clock is telling to do things at certain times of the day
and if you're travelling to another part of the world
that's not really possible anymore, so the body is kind of thrown
and you can suffer from insomnia and
the others more serious side effects.
So my tip number one is
to be fully rested before you go traveling!
That might surprise a few people, because those people may think "well,
if I stay upon night try to mimic the ... the time zone
maybe that can work but if you're really
tired before the flight then that's really gonna hit you a little bit more
in terms of let lag and fatigue when you arrive
because you're already tired, it means to be as rested as possible.
Not might even include sleeping on the flight
I always take twenty minute power naps
at least once a day so that tends to then give me a boost.
And I encourage you also to do that if you're flying you know
make sure that you rest as much as possible.
Now if you can and it's not too expensive, of course everybody
looks at the budget when they book flights,
try to arrive during daylight hours as opposed to night hours.
So recently when I was in Brazil, I did that. I traveled from East to West
from Europe to Brazil and arriving daylight hours definitely helped
me adjust very quickly because I can just stayed up,
slept a little bit, maybe ....maybe a little bit during the day
but then I went to bed kind of a normal time that I would
by that evening.
Now tip number three is
to keep yourself really hydrated. I mean
drinking water.
That doesn't mean taking a full advantage of the trolley
or the alcohol available on the flight
because that will dehydrate you
and it won't help you with jet lag at all
if you drink alcohol.
So tip number four is to
do lots of exercise.
When you're flying ... not sit in the chair, especially if it's a long flight, during the whole time of the entire time.
It's good to get up, stretch your legs
and ... stretching is great
and to move around a bit and get that circulation going in your body and that
will help a lot
when you arrive. You're not gonna be as
exhausted as a result as long as you keep yourself moving.
If you are not sleeping, of course, if you are sleeping then you sleep.
But if you are there and you're awake then definitely move around
a little bit and stretch.
Now the fifth and final tip is now a little bit
absolute because what I would have said in the past is
that you should set your watch, change the time
so that you're on the time of your destination.
But to be honest this thing here is basically just a piece of jewellery, an ornament now
and I don't actually look at it.
Change the time on your laptop or on your smartphone
And if you're still using watch time change it there
but ... that's important because then you get, you can synchronized or you think ok
you may have left say New York and it's
midday but you're going to ... I don't know ... Paris in France
and maybe it's ... it's six hours difference, so it's
probably ... yes ... 6 pm there
and if you're already think it's 6 pm you're thinking
"oh, now I should probably start thinking of sleeping", maybe
if it's midnight cos you're into your flight
You're synchronized with your destination's time
so when you arrive, you think "ok, I've slept from midnight to 8 am "
and now we wake ... now I wake up and I'm at my destination
Say you did a really long flight,
like say from New York to Bangkok in Thailand
so you're already arrived, you think "yeah, it's morning now
I do my full day'. So to avoid it just psychologically
as well as physically.
to your new destination.
We are gonna from this airport in Sao Paulo
I will stop in Casablanca for just in few hours
and then go on to Paris in France
So I've arrived in Paris. That was ... the trip took about 13-14 hours
they get first from Sao Paulo to Casablanca in Morocco
and then on to Paris here in France.
And Royal Emirates thank you very much
you didn't transfer for my bags so I am wearing shorts
and a T-shirt
in European winter.
It's ... I am pretty cold.
So as you can see about this .. .I don't know if this
is jet lag sitting in but definitely the
temperature is starting to hit me.
So it's been about a week or maybe ten days since I came back from Brazil
And I have to say I didn't suffer from jet lag
at all. I had crossed those 4 time zones from Sao Paulo
to Paris, actually I went to Sofia in Bulgaria that was another time zone
then another two time zones to Dubai
in the United Arab Emirates and I came back again here to Romania
I am in Bucharest at that moment.
Behind me you can see the Palace of the Parliament -
very impressive building.
I have to say that
with all this moving back and forth I wasn't like I moved
you know, ten time zones or something that crazy,
but even with seven I didn't really suffer at all.
I think that main reason is because I don't
actually have the same regime every day.
It's not like I wake up ... you know ... five days a week
at 7 am and take a bus, go to work...you know I have ...
then come back home like a lot of people do
if they have standardized working hours and then it can be really difficult
for them to adjust if they travel long distances.
But for me basically I can
work whenever I wake up until
I go to sleep
so that's pretty adaptable. And that's actually a big
another big advantage of being a digital nomad.
It's not just location independence
It's also sleep independence I guess or
sleep cycle independence which is that you can basically
do that as you feel most comfortable with.
And also I'd like to take power naps. I like to sleep
maybe for 6 to 7 hours
in one go and then take a twenty-minute power nap sometime during the day
and that also helps a lot with dealing with jet lag.
