Distinguished guests and sailors. I'm going to use 7 minutes of your time.
50 years ago I was sitting in my office in Helsinki,
when the phone rang and the telephonist told that a young man,
a handsome young man, called Koskenkylä, wanted to see me
I had a very difficult job to complete
so I did not have the time to meet him
and I asked the telephonist to ask
if he could come back the next day.
I forgot all about Koskenkylän
but when I left my room and entered the hall very late
the office was empty, of course,
who sat on the bench but that young man Koskenkylä.
He rushed into my office
and spread a big drawing on my desk
and I looked at the drawing without saying anything
Then Pekka said: "Do you like it?"
I answered: "It's a winner."
Pekka replied: "It is yours."
Pekka added that he knew
that I had recently sold my boat Viking
and I that frequently sailed on other boats.
I said "Yes" and he then said that
"Now you need a new boat. "
I said that,
"If I get a new boat,
this one competes in the One Ton class
and I could at most think of a ½-tonner".
Well, you can guess what Pekka replied
"Isn't it good to get one ton for the price of half a ton?"
Then I asked how this would happen
He said that he would revolutionize
the entire boat building industry in the world.
All the big boats had so far been made as one-off's
and he was going to build 100 of these boats,
and he would eat his hat if it does not work out.
And I can already here say that it worked out.
At the first meeting, I did not sign a contract,
that he by the way had ready.
Then on Friday the following week
the same thing happened.
I was late at the office, and no one informed of anything special all.
When I came out of my room
this handsome Pekka Koskenkylä sat there.
He again ran to my desk
and spread his his drawings and asked:
"Do you still like your boat?"
I said, that it is not my boat.
Moreover the boat is to be series produced,
it needs to be done in fiber glass, of course.
Koskenkylä said "Yes".
It is out of the question for our family
because I'm a fan of wooden boats
my wife and children think that fiber glass smells bad.
Again Pekka had to to leave without an order,
Then, two days before Christmas
I came home late to my house in Laajasalo
and who was there?
Pekka!
He had already charmed my wife
so that my wife accepted the boat
and my children even accepted the fiber glass odor.
My only role was only to sign the contract.
I signed and I had to also sign a big check,
as one third of the price was to be paid immediately
and that's what I did.
I was criticized quite a lot.
How could Isacrifice quite a lot of money on the young man
even though he was handsome,
as he was, here is here behind me.
This is how I was criticized, but I have never regretted it.
Pekka was delighted when he got the signature,
and exclaimed,
"Now the world's finest boat yard was born!"
Why was that?
He had two other clients
both of whom had said
that they will sign the contract
on the condition that Heinz Ramm-Schmidt signs first
When I asked how financing would be handled
he said that there is nothing to worry about,
when a contract is signed, he gets one third
when the keel is in place, he gets another third
and the final third when the boat is delivered.
And if the boat is popular, many orders will flow in,
as turned out to be the case.
But the problems arose when new orders are no longer obtained.
Just as in the construction industry.
As Talermo earlier today said,
Pekka did not know much of anything.
He had no boat yard,
he had no money,
and not a lot of boat building knowledge either.
But he was wise and used the world's best experts
and thus was born this boat.
And miraculously, also the other boats.
The other customers were Tauno Koristo,
with the boat number 00,
and then a Swede called Gärdesgård
and the third was Tarantella.
In order for Tarantella not to be late
for the Gotland Runt race
we moved to live for the whole spring
close to the Kollby boat yard
to monitor that the boat is not delayed too much
and in addition to ensure
that it is the first boat to be launched and sailing.
In the end, we got our boat a lot later
when the Gotland Runt had already passed,
that is clear.
Towards the end of the year we competed successfully in a couple of races
and the Swedish boat magazine Till rors
wrote that our boat was number one in the Nordic countries that year.
We had a lot to complain about.
There were lots of teething problems
and Pekka responded brilliantly to all reclamations
he was great.
He told me sell Tarantella to Sweden,
the money would be enough
to get the second-generation Swan,
Swan 37, Tarantella II
And this is what happened and I have never regretted it.
Thank you very much.
