How To Become A Coffee Roaster And Barista In Costa Rica | Lucie For Hire | Refinery29 - Duration: 5:52.

I'm Lucie Fink.

I'm a video producer at Refinery29 but every so often,

I like to try other people's jobs.

So I flew down to Costa Rica and I'm gonna

see if I have what it takes to be a gourmet

coffee roaster.

This is Lucie for Hire.

It's no secret that Costa Rica is known for its coffee

and Café Britt, or Britt Coffee,

was Costa Rica's first-ever gourmet coffee roasting company.

I visited their plantation and roastery to

learn how a bean on a bush becomes a beverage.

Your first challenge is picking coffee beans.

So what are you holding?

Ah, this is high technology.

So let me show you.

You see the harvest in Costa Rica is in the

dry season from December up to February.

But in the same bush, not all the coffee berries

are ripe at the same time.

The red ones are the ones ready.

This is the best outfit ever!

Lucie, you can go shopping like this.

Yeah!

And you have hands free.

This is what they need at grocery stores.

First, we walked through the nursery

to gather our beans.

Alright, here I go.

This is for small people, I know.

And then you should pick the red ones only

and they will fall immediately in the basket.

You see?

There we go.

You have to pay very close attention and really

squat down there to find the best beans.

It's like a full body workout.

You see the good selection of the red beans

is one of the most basic things to make a

gourmet coffee cup.

Right.

You see?

This one is very juicy.

Wow.

That is good.

Oh, those coffee beans are gorgeous.

Woohoo!

Ahh!

There's a spider web!

We should go the other way.

Well, this way!

And since there might only be a few ripe ones

per bush, we had to really get ourselves immersed

into the nursery.

We are just foraging for coffee beans right now.

You're doing a very good selection here.

Thank you.

Alright, I've got a basket full of beans.

Yes you did.

So, now, once you have your coffee,

it's time to roast it.

Let's roast it.

Let's roast it!

Your second challenge is roasting the coffee.

So these are ready for roasting.

Those are ready for roasting, exactly.

Let's roast!

Very good.

We could do a light roast, a medium, a dark,

or an espresso roast.

I'm really tired so I'm gonna go with

espresso.

Very good, very good.

So that's what we're going to do right here.

The roasting process takes between eight to

twelve minutes, depending on the type of roast.

Move it a little bit.

We closely monitored the beans by checking,

and checking…

Not ready.

And checking again.

And finally, there were about 10 seconds left.

Diez,

nueve,

ocho,

siete,

seis,

cinco,

cuatro,

tres,

dos,

uno!

Alright, take these out.

Finito!

Very good.

Open, yes.

We're gonna let the coffee right here

repose for at least eight hours, alright?

And then we can try the coffee.

So I'll see you in eight hours.

Very good.

I'll see you in eight hours.

Bye.

I didn't actually leave for eight hours.

He had some espresso beans that were

already reposed and ready to go.

And then it was time for my third challenge:

coffee cupping.

First, we took beans from each type of roast

and ground them

and then we poured hot

water directly onto the grounds to brew them.

I thought it was weird at first,

that we weren't using a filter,

but he explained to me why

we do this.

If you use a filter with paper or something like that,

that's gonna absorb every flavor

of the coffee so this is the right way to

make the cupping of the coffee.

Of course you cannot drink this, right?

So we're gonna do this process.

Oh, so we remove the grounds?

Exactly.

Coffee cupping is the process of deeply sniffing—

Smells good.

—and then loudly slurping coffee to measure

the different aspects of its taste.

This allowed me to pull out all the different

flavor notes in each type of roast.

And after slurping,

you spit it into a spittoon.

Very dark.

My first cupping experience.

So your final challenge is gonna be making

the cappuccino, the three layer cappuccino.

And we're gonna make it with this roast.

Alright?

Alright.

Very good.

Let's do it!

Just add the flavor.

First, I chose to flavor my coffee with hazelnut.

There you go.

Wait, wait!

What are you doing?

Oh, I thought you meant…

No, no.

That's gonna affect-

Oh, no!

So should we get a new cup?

Yeah.

And then, I blew it.

There you go, perfect.

Perfect.

And then we steamed the milk to get foam

and added the foam as our first layer,

followed by the liquid milk.

I'm not a very clean barista.

Next, we turned our espresso beans

into grounds.

Wow.

That's silky smooth.

Pressed the coffee.

One!

And brewed an espresso.

And after carefully pouring it in...

There you go, keep going, keep going.

I touched the edge.

No worries, just don't stop.

Okay...Not that carefully.

I had my brew-tiful, three layer cappuccino.

Wow, I did not know what to expect.

This is beautiful.

Damn!

Would you hire me?

I would hire you, yes.

Perfect.

It's official.

Official, very good.

The newest employee of Britt.

As they say in the coffee business,

smell ya later!

Okay, they don't actually say that.

Advice for New Teachers from Sydney Chaffee, 2017 National Teacher of the Year finalist - Duration: 2:28.

Hi I'm Sydney Chaffee and I earned my Masters

of Education from Lesley University in

2007

First I try to talk about and

emphasize good planning so you can know

all of the techniques in the world for

classroom management but none of it's

going to help you if your lesson plan isn't good.

So backwards planning, having it

down to details, really knowing what

you're doing and why the students are

doing and why it matters and what the

goals are...that's your foundation that

has to be made. You're teaching kids in a way

that fires you up and it's gonna fire

them up

You're excited about it and you're

showing them that it matters they're

going to get excited about it, too. In my

application for Teacher of the Year, they

asked me "Well, how do you use feedback in your

classroom and I just talked about how

everything, every choice that a child

makes when they're in my room and

feedback. I think a lot of times we take

things personally

We think that the child is trying to, you

know, get us, or, you know, that I can't

believe they're doing that they're being

so disrespectful but really thinking

about this is a child and the child is

sending us a message right now and the

message probably has nothing to do with

us so let's try to figure out what that

message is and then figure out how do we

communicate with that child so we can get

them where they need to be. You know, there are these,

like, terrible sayings about "Oh, well if

you can't do, teach" or you know,

"Oh, if you're good at something just

teach it" and that's it's so ridiculous

because it's a profession. People study

their entire lives, right, and really

great teachers are always learning

they're always figuring out "Well how can

I do this better and what can I read"

I have a stack of books right now they

came out in the last year that I'm just

like eating up and trying to figure out

how can I do this better

There's such an urgency to the work and

you just want to do it right but the

nature of the work is that there's

always more work to do.

I think being able to identify the ways in which

things aren't going the way we want them

to, or this child isn't quite getting

what we need them to and then be

solutions-based and be action-oriented

and be able to say okay and here's what

I'm going to try is really really

important because if we can't do that we're

going to get demoralized really quickly

because the work is so huge

Find your voice, find your style.

Kids know immediately when you're not being

yourself right they can tell when you're

sort of like switching into a different

version of yourself like Oh, she's serious teachr now

but they know immediately

when you're trying to like put something

on and they're not going to have it so

find the way that you're going to put

your mark on it and your stamp on it is important.

How to Make a Hidden Coil Bail For Pendants-Friday Findings Jewelry Tutorial - Duration: 6:01.

Hi there, Sandy here.

Welcome to another Friday Findings video at KeepsakeCrafts.net.

Sometimes we make polymer clay pendant pieces that we want to hang, but we really don't

want to drill holes or attach metal findings.

We want the finding to be hidden in the back and today I have a tip for you for an easy

way to do just that.

Here are a few pendant pieces I made recently and if you're interested in these, all three

of them were made with directions from Christi Friesen's book, Flourish and they all have

nice designs that I really didn't want to interrupt with either drilling a hole or with

having some kind of metal piece coming out of them to hang them.

So what I've done is made a bail that goes on the back that's hidden from the front and

it's just done with a wire coil.

What's great about it is you don't have to make the design decision about how you're

gonna hang a piece until you're ready to finish it.

So like this one I could have hung a myriad of ways.

I even could have hung it like sideways.

I could have put the finding going in any direction.

So it gives you that flexibility.

The first thing you need to consider is what you're going to use to hang it.

This is just a piece of silk cord.

For you I'm going to make a bail for this piece.

I just love the way it looks like dried flowers, but they are polymer clay and I'm going to

hang this with some suede cord.

You need to know that because you need to make sure that your coil is big enough to

accept your cord.

And the best tool for making a wire cord is this, a coiling gizmo.

It's just a simple thing.

I've mounted mine to a block of wood which I clamped to my table.

If you want to learn how to use this, I've made a Friday Findings video on making wire

coils.

I've used a large enough mandrel to build my coil so that I know my suede cord is gong

to fit through it.

Now when you make your coil, make sure that you make it maybe a little bit larger than

you think you're going to need.

It's just easier to cut off some than to have it shorter.

The wider it is in relation to your piece, the more stable your piece is going to be

and you won't have it flipping over and around on you.

So I've got my wire coil here and I'm going to put it right about here.

So I'm going to cut it about here and I'll just give that a snip.

I can save that other piece for another project.

In the interest of comfort in wearing, I want to be sure that these wire ends are in the

same spot on the coil.

So there's this one here.

So this one on this end, I'm gonna trim so they're both in the same spot.

I can basically embed them both in the clay.

I have some clay rolled out on about a number three setting on my pasta machine, a medium

thickness.

This one I rolled on the number one.

It's pretty thick.

So I rolled this one out just a little bit more thinly and I'm going to brush some translucent

liquid Sculpey on the back, just a thin coat.

You don't want it to be too thick or it will be slipping and sliding all over the place

on you.

And I'm just going to add a texture to my backing.

Use whatever you like, texture sheets.

This is a soap saver sponge I found in WalMart.

As I'm putting this on, I'm going to try not to trap any air bubbles by just kind of gently

laying it down and smoothing it as I go.

Just use a craft blade to trim that out.

Now I'm just gonna bring my texture up and over the edges to make those all nice and

kind of rounded and neat.

So at this point when you have your backing on that you need to decide which way you want

your pendant oriented and I'm just gonna put it like this.

So you take your coil and find those ends, which should be right in line with each other

and press with those ends down into the clay backing.

And I'm gonna take my tool and kind of go in there a little ways and really press that

down into the clay.

For some added security, I'm just gonna take a couple of tiny little pieces of the same

clay, roll them into a little bit of an oval and then place that over the last coil or

two.

Use your tool to push that down and if you need to fix your texture.

What that will do is once you've baked the clay, now these coils are trapped and sandwiched

inside the clay.

So there's no chance of your wire coil popping off.

Just make sure that you don't leave such a thick amount of clay there that you're not

able to get your cord through.

Now you can bake it and then string on your cord and you have a nice invisible bail hanging

your pendant piece securely.

So if you liked this video, be sure to give it a thumbs up, share and subscribe to see

more like it.

Is a Workers' Comp Claim the Same for Union Members? - Duration: 1:37.

The Workers' Compensation Commission does look at all individuals the same.

Whether you're union or not, that sometimes can be an issue, because union members have

contracts that denote whether or not they can seek an outside job, but the workers'

compensation commission does not recognize that contract and therefore places the same

burdens and responsibilities on that union worker as they do on non-union workers.

In the case of a union member, we look not only at the lost paychecks, the lost earnings,

but also the lost fringe benefits.

We have devoted more than 35 years at Koonz McKenney to representing the interests of

union members and we are unique in that respect.

We don't advertise on TV, we get our business the old-fashioned way, we get our business

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR MACROS FOR WEIGHT LOSS - Duration: 5:40.

Hey everybody and welcome to the video.

So this is Josh here AKA BeardedFatLoss, and today we're going to be talking about how

I set up my macros.

So, I get a lot of questions from folks asking how many calories should I eat?

How much protein should I eat?

How do I set up my macros?

I know I've talked about it in other videos but I thought it would be really nice to have

this video, standalone by itself to be able to link and to be able to show people and

explain.

I just got done filming another episode of 'Explore', so I figured I'd take advantage

of this awesome background that I have right now.

Nothing beats hanging out in the woods for a couple of hours on your day off, really

nice and relaxing.

Alright, back to the topic at hand, setting up macros.

And I will preface this by saying I know there are other ways to do it that are perfectly

valid, I just wanted to explain how I do mine and what has worked best for me for setting

it up.

So the first thing you need to do is figure out how many calories you burn in a day.

And that number is called your T.D.E.E., your Total Daily Energy Expenditure.

So that's just how many calories you burn each day from normal activity.

You need to do two different things to find that number.

One, there are calculators online if you google 'TDEE Calculator' it'll ask you a few questions

about your weight, your height, your activity levels, and it'll give you a rough idea of

that calorie burn.

Beyond that, that gives you a starting point to experiment because everybody's bodies are

a little bit different so that'll give you a number to start with and try, then find

for yourself what's going to work best.

I need to pause right now though, check this out everybody.

Let's see if I can get that in focus here.

Sorry about that, had to stop, that mountain view was amazing.

So once you have your TDEE calculated, the next step I like to take care of is making

sure I hit my protein.

Now calculating protein, I aim for .7-.8g per pound of lean body mass.

It's a lot less than a lot of other people I know, but honestly, I have not noticed any

negative impact and I think it's a little bit easier to adhere to without having to

worry about getting 200 grams of protein.

So that would be my main recommendation, .7-.8g per pound of lean body mass for your protein.

And with fat and carbs after you have your protein done you have a little bit of room,

a little bit of flexibility depending on what works for you.

So for fat, I usually will recommend folks at least 50g at a bare minimum.

You want to make sure not to drop your fat down too low, because that can really really

negatively effect your digestion and it can really effect a lot of the hormones in your

body.

You want to make sure you at least have 50g at a minimum.

I usually go a little bit above that, but I do tend to prefer having a little bit of

extra carbs over a little bit of extra fat but I know plenty of people that are the opposite.

So the 3rd macronutrient is going to be carbohydrates.

For me personally, I will always make sure and take care of my protein, then I'll take

care of my fat, then I fill the rest of my calories with carbs.

Because, you need that set amount of fat at a minimum, and you need set amount of protein

at a minimum, but you have a lot more flexibility with carbs vs the other macronutrients.

If I'm messing around with different amounts of calories it's coming or going from carbohydrates.

So if I'm dieting down and I need to lower my calories more, I'm going to take it all

out of carbohydrates for the most part or I'm going to add it into carbohydrates if

I'm adding calories.

So that is really it.

It's nothing that complicated, I think figuring out your TDEE is a little bit harder and a

lot more important.

For weight loss, the total calories is really what matters.

You know, you have those macronutrients there to ensure that your retaining the muscle or

building muscle, and to make sure your hormones are being released properly, and to make sure

that you have that carbohydrate energy.

So they're all there for a purpose, but weight loss is strictly going to come from the amount

of overall calories you're going to eat.

And if you're ever feeling really overwhelmed by tracking macros if you're just starting

off, at least focus on calories.

It's going to be a little bit easier on you and it's going to have the same weight impact.

As you feel comfortable, start tracking your macros as you feel comfortable.

That is going to be it, really simple.

I just know I get a lot of questions about that so I wanted to have that separate video.

This is a rare occurrence, I am off work today and I get to wear my normal clothes in the

video for once.

I feel like I get in these habits, I really don't wear business casual 24/7 everybody.

Leave a comment below, let me know what's happening with you, when is your next day

off and what have you got going on?

And make sure to like the video if you did, helps me out a lot and be sure to subscribe

if you want to see more, I put out new videos twice a week.

Until next time, I will talk to you all later.

Have a good one.
