Hey guys, Steve here. Let's talk about body
rotation and power in punches. Again, as you've
seen from my previous videos, it's that
rotation and that moving that, it's all
about that inertia. Our whole body is
where the power comes from. It's not about the
inertia of punch (arm alone) although there's, it's an
important factor, but it's really from
our bodies, where the power from.
Alright, we're going to talk about
180 degree rotation. Alright? I
first picked up on this or, or not picked
up on it but, it first caught my eye as
what a valuable, incredible, powerful
tool it was, watching Mike Tyson back in the
90's. When Mike Tyson gets in tight and he's
throwing hooks, he goes all the way to
where his shoulders are looking at his
opponent and then he throws, follows with
another hook. And he's tight and he's
short and huge but... It's amazing the
amount of speed that he gets with that
much body, that much mass. He rotates
through that, fully at his opponent and then
he rotates to the next punch, pivoting on
the foot, and his shoulders are pointing
right back to his opponent again. He's
throwing, he's throwing, he's throwing. Alright? That's the
idea, that's what we're looking for. Balance,
continued constant balance at any given
moment through any given punch, and you
can go into slow-mo and demonstrate
that. We can stop ourselves at any
given point and prove that to ourselves
but we're always in balance. Ok? And
we're always covering a head, always we've got
the defense up. We throw a punch, it comes right
back. Alright? We'll talk about this movement, and coming
over
with the 180 turn, from where all the power comes.
Mike Tyson again, and Mike if you watching,
shout out. I appreciate all that learned
from you just from watching you from a
distance. Let's talk about that 180
degree turn. We're here at 45 degrees to
opponent. Let's say we've just thrown a jab
or we've avoided a punch and now we're
squared off, for whatever reason, not squared off
but we're lined up with our opponent.
And we're going to throw a hook, all the way through,
and we're rotating, and we threw it to the head,
to the head height of our opponent.
Our elbow is up and behind that punch, and we've rotated fully.
The key in this is that full
rotation. All that inertia comes from that.
We'll talk about sitting down on punches in
the next video and a link will be down
below but there's more power by sitting
in the punch as well, but that 180 degree rotation
is Massive! Ok? I can't under (over)
emphasize it. We're going to hook and we're going to end up
completely rotated, hopefully on
balance. Our guard is going to come right
back, and we're coming back around the
other side, and the guard comes right back to the
temple, like it was a bungee.
Ok? You get the idea, generally. It's that explosive, explosive rotation, it's
where all that power comes from. Just think
Mike Tyson every time you throw those
punches. And every time you throw them, I
always suggest, if you're moving your
head in a direction, that's the side
your guard should be up. If you've got a
one-handed guard because you're in the middle
of throwing a punch, in this case I'm going
to be moving this way and moving this way,
I'm gonna hook, hook, hook. So if I'm moving, at
least I'm not going to be walking into a
punch. That's the guard I've got up. That's what
I'm assuming is the best place to put my guard as
opposed to crossing it. But we're throwing these
hooks with Full rotation. Alright? 180 degree rotated, how's that? On top of that,
let's talk about, in the next video, we'll take
that total rotation, and we're going to reach in
with a Muay Thai grab behind the neck of
our opponent, and we're going to bring that
rotation, pulling ourselves in to that
rotation even, adding more power to just the
twist we've been talking about. We pull ourselves
into that rotation and pull our opponent into us,
and then drop an elbow. Next video guys.
