Hi there.

I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined.

Today I am going talking about Case Reports in scholarly publishing.

A Case Report is most closely associated with medical publishing.

It is a detailed report of the signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, and the follow-up

of an individual patient or sometimes patients.

Case Reports normally describe an unusual occurrence in medicine.

Some Case Reports may also review the literature associated with the disease state or particular

circumstance.

There are many types of Case Reports.

Some of them are: an unexpected connection between a disease or symptom, an unexpected

turn of events in the course of treating a patient, a unique aspect of a disease, a unique

approach to treatment, and many others.

Case Reports do have play a role in evidence-based medicine.

They have helped the with recognition of new diseases and adverse effects of treatments.

They can also help understand the spectrum of rare diseases and the unusual presentations

of common diseases.

Case Reports can also play a role in medical education, particularly with case-based learning.

In the hierarchy of scholarly publishing, Case Reports are seen as having lesser value

then original research because they are anecdotal in nature.

Many journals have rethought Case Reports for this very reason.

Case Reports can affect Impact Factor, leading to the further restriction of them among some

journals.

Some journals have stopped accepting them; others have moved them online only; others

have made separate publications.

Some Case Report publications have embraced Open Access as the way to ensure a continuing

avenue for publication for this format.

Some of the largest publishers, Oxford, Sage, Wiley, BMJ, offer publication opportunities

for Case Reports, either for Open Access or the traditional model.

I am sure the Case Report format will continue to be a valued educational format in scholarly

publishing.

More Shared Decision Making Research Is Needed - Duration: 1:44.

I believe that we do have evidence to demonstrate that using shared decision making and decision

tools can help patients address these questions in a way that makes them feel more empowered

and satisfied with the decision they made and that's incredibly important.

There are some areas where we do have gaps and one of those areas is being able to demonstrate

longer term follow ups with those same patients to make sure that their quality of life actually

is realized and improved.

That's an area where I think we could do more research to better understand the really the

evidence behind this whole process.

Clinicians very much are influenced by evidence, they want to know, they want to see the numbers,

they want to see that what they're doing actually and the investment they make in the

long term pays off.

And certainly plans also have an interest in that as well because in the end they're

paying for those services and want to make sure those resources are being used wisely.

I think that purchasers have an interest in this topic too given that they have intrinsic

interest in wanting to make sure that the people working for them are healthy and also

have a good experience with healthcare.

So as they choose which healthcare providers to engage with, or plans they want to make

sure the providers are taking care of their patients, and are doing the right thing for

them, so shared decision making is a part of that for sure.

So what is a partner program?

Within your business you have direct business,

you go directly,

you have indirect business.

Within the indirect business,

you have referrals, agents and partners.

But for partners, you need a partner program.

The partner program actually defines how much discount

they get, what they need to do in order to get

that discount, what the marketing plan is

that you jointly agreed, and also,

what I call the partner kit, the sales kit.

You always have to think that you have to enable them,

you have to remove all friction in order that they can sell.

It's not you that goes there and says, "Here are

my products and my service."

And then you expect they will magically sell.

It doesn't work.

You know how hard it is, and how much time it took

for you to find your customers.

You need to train them in that, you need to explain that.

So what you're gonna do is you're gonna build a sales kit,

and you're going to go along in the beginning with them

to find those first customers.

You're gonna create a champion within your partner.

That champion will then leverage your knowledge

and it will be like a gravity to all the other sales.

They will wanna have the same success

and they will sell your product.

So what is a partner program?

It consists out of all of these steps.

You need a program that potential partners are attracted to.

Some companies have done that really well.

A good example is the guys from Dropbox have a

very nice partner program, and you look at Google,

and Facebook all of them they also have that

if you want to be inspired.

But you do need good quality material as a base.
