Marquette's hot-shooting duo too much for Georgetown in back-and-forth battle
There was hardly a shot Marquette's Sam Hauser and Andrew Rowsey couldn't hit Monday night at Capital One Arena, and the pair had tried them all.
Hauser was brilliant from the three-point line, hitting catch-and-shoot deep balls from the corner with calm that bordered on nonchalance. Rowsey churned through 22 shot attempts and scored nine points in the game's final 101 seconds.
The duo combined for 56 points to sink Georgetown's hopes for one last win on its home court this season, lifting the Golden Eagles to a 90-86 overtime victory.
It was Georgetown's fourth overtime loss this year and its fifth overtime game overall. The Hoyas, not for lack of defensive effort, simply couldn't contend with Marquette's hot shooters.
Rowsey put Marquette ahead with a jumper with 34 seconds remaining in overtime, Marcus Derrickson missed a close-range floater as he tried to answer for Georgetown, then Rowsey sealed the game with a pair of free throws as a strong contingent of Golden Eagles fans chanted, "We are . . .
Marquette!". The announced crowd of 5,375 got a good show. Georgetown (15-13, 5-12 Big East) and Marquette (17-12, 8-9) thrilled until the end Monday night, trading leads back and forth and tying the game seven different times in the second half alone.
It was Hoyas senior Jonathan Mulmore who sent the game into overtime. The point guard had celebrated senior day Saturday with his mother and sister, who traveled from Louisiana, but played the actual final home game of his career Monday.
Mulmore notched a new season high in Big East games with 15 points against Marquette and added four assists and just one turnover, by far his strongest conference outing this year.
But the highlight of his game was when he charged, legs churning hard as they had all season, through the lane for a layup at the buzzer that sent the game to overtime tied at 78.
Mulmore tied it again, 84-84, with a jumper with 1:14 left in the first overtime period, appearing as though he had fresh legs after logging 30 hard minutes.
Rowsey and Mulmore traded two free throws apiece before Rowsey's jumper put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. Jessie Govan led four scorers in double figures for Georgetown with 25 points and nine rebounds, and Jahvon Blair added 15 points.
Rowsey and Hauser each logged 28 points, and Hauser went 7 for 8 from the three-point line. Marquette combined for 18 threes overall. The Golden Eagles just edged Georgetown on the boards, outrebounding the hosts 34-33.
Before the back-and-forth second half, the Hoyas had to dig out of a 10-point hole early in the first half and wrestle control back from Marquette.
Georgetown opened with three missed baskets and a pair of turnovers before Govan got the Hoyas going with a dunk that settled the offense.
A pair of early three-pointers from Derrickson helped make up ground, though Marquette continued clicking on offense. A three-pointer from Jamal Cain extended the lead to double digits midway through the first period.
But Georgetown Coach Patrick Ewing added a few defensive adjustments, including doubling the ballhandler, to slow Marquette in transition and rattle the Golden Eagles under the basket as the Hoyas used a Govan three-pointer to set off on a 15-1 run.
A three-pointer from Rowsey as the shot clock buzzed cut into Georgetown's halftime lead, but the Hoyas still went into the locker room holding onto a 46-40 margin.
