First Responder Who IGNORED Sheriff's Stand Down Order Not Prepared For What Happened
After This story will bring a tear to your eyes.
In the face of tragedy and ineptitude comes a story of heroism and hope.
After the cowards at the Broward County Sheriff's office finally let the first responders into
the Parkland High School shooting site in order to try and save the shooting victims
who were still alive, Lt. Laz Ojeda of the Coral Springs Fire Department is being credited
for saving the life of Maddy Wilford.
Willford had been shot 3 times and had lost so much blood that they had initially thought
she was dead.
But after first responders were allowed to come in and examine the bodies they quickly
noticed she was barely alive, but alive none the less.
Ojeda was then told she was 15 years old, which meant she would have to be taken to
Broward Health Medical Center (because it has a children's care center) 30 miles away.
But Ojeda roused her enough that she became conscious for a second.
Which was enough time for him to be able to ask her how old she was, she whispered 17
and fell back unconscious, but that was enough to reroute her to Broward North which was
only 10 miles away.
The doctor who treated her said the time it would have taken to drive those 20 additional
miles would have meant that she would have passed away during the trip.
If they would have taken her to Broward Health Medical Center which is 30 miles away from
the school she wouldn't be alive today. Thanks to the disobedience of Ojeda, a 17-year-old
girl will be able to live out the rest of her life.
In a time when we have a hard time finding a hero, this man proved to everyone there
are some out there.
He could have just followed the order he was given and today the nation would be mourning
18 souls instead of 17.
Via CNN:
"As they sped away from the shooting scene at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the
first responder was skeptical.
Lt. Laz Ojeda of the Coral Springs Fire Department had been told that his patient, Maddy Wilford,
was 15 years old.
She had been shot at least three times in the February 14 mass shooting, and she'd
lost so much blood first responders initially feared she was dead.
But Ojeda thought she was older than 15 and roused her to make sure.
Conscious for a second, she whispered she was 17.
That made all the difference.
Instead of taking her to a hospital with a children's facility some 30 miles away as
he had been instructed to do, Ojeda made the decision to take Maddy to a hospital just
10 miles from the high school.
The gutsy, split-second call probably saved her life.
Ojeda recounted his story Monday during an emotional news conference at Broward Health
North, the hospital where his team took Wildford.
A fateful choice Ojeda was in the third rescue group to reach
the high school after shooter Nikolas Cruz had opened fire on students, teachers and
staff that day.
He said it was a scene of "organized chaos."
When Wilford was brought to them, she was so pale they didn't think she was alive,
until another officer shook her.
"I believe she gasped, or she moved," Ojeda said.
"She made signs of life."
Alive, but in bad shape.
She had a number of injuries, including a chest wound, which Ojeda says a SWAT team
member from the Broward County Sheriff's Office sealed up, an act which also contributed
to her survival.
Ojeda and his team prepared her for transport.
"I looked at Maddy, and she didn't look 15," Ojeda said.
"We had been told to take her to (Broward Health Medical Center)."
That medical facility, which also has a children's hospital on its campus, was about 30 miles
away, and Ojeda was worried Wilford would die before they got there.
"I looked at her, I gave her a sternal rub, and I said, 'Hey, how old are you?'"
Wilford showed no response to Ojeda's question.
He asked a second time.
"She came around, and she told me she was 17," Ojeda said, his voice quivering with
emotion as he wiped away tears.
Then he made the decision that the doctors who treated her agree saved her life.
"We're going to Broward North!"
Ojeda said as he redirected his team.
"It's only 10 miles away."
A miraculous recovery Wilford came under the care of Dr. Igor Nichiporenko,
medical director of trauma services at the hospital.
When she arrived, she was "pale and not responsive.
She was in shock," said Nichiporenko, who also spoke at the news conference.
He had little information but could see that she had "multiple gunshot wounds" to her
chest, abdomen and upper sternum.
Nichiporenko had to perform "damage control," amounting to extricating bullets and repairing
damage, first in Wilford's abdomen and then her chest and in the right upper extremity,
where tendons had been "shattered from gunshot wounds."
Despite her horrendous injuries, Wilford has made an almost miraculous recovery.
"Her hospital stay was less than seven days," Nichiporenko said.
"Young people have a tendency to heal very fast.
She's very, very lucky."
Asked whether Ojeda's call to take her to Broward Health North instead of the more distant
hospital saved Wilford's life, Nichiporenko said, simply, "yes, of course."
Wilford, who went home last week, also spoke at the news conference, expressing her thanks
to everyone who helped her.
"I'd just like to say that I'm so grateful to be here, and it wouldn't be possible
without those officers and first responders and these amazing doctors," she said.
As for Ojeda, he said it's hard to describe what this experience has meant to him.
"I am beyond words.
All I can say is that I thank God," he said on CNN's "New Day" Tuesday.
"I thank God for allowing us to be an instrument in this miracle."

One minute on corporate crime and investigations trends for 2018 - Duration: 1:21.
Three trends for 2018. We're seeing the continuing international cooperation in anti-corruption investigations.
This is increased by new legislation in jurisdictions like France and Mexico,
bringing them in to line with others in relation to hunting down and bringing to book
both executives and companies for criminal activity.
We're going to see international cooperation meaning that there has to be global settlements in matters.
Second issue is deferred prosecution agreements.
Once the remit of the US, the UK then bought them in, in 2014, in their legislation
and France has bought them in too, and we've seen the first example of that in France.
This means considerations of early self report to avoid a prosecution.
It also means companies have to consider what they are doing in more than one jurisdiction
in any international investigation.
And thirdly, the emphasis now being on tax avoidance, tax evasion schemes
we see the Criminal Finances Act in force in the UK
bringing in the new facilitation of tax evasion offence
meaning both corporates and individuals are going to have to be very careful
what they do with their money to avoid payment of tax.

Medical Skin Treatments with Little to No Downtime, and a Quick Solution for Facial Volume Loss - Duration: 9:31.
Thank you for your question.
You stated in your question that you're 45-years-old and you're looking for something
that will tighten and brighten and not require much downtime.
And you have experienced already some Fraxel treatments as well as 3 Dermapen treatments.
And you describe the Fraxel treatments as being not that effective and the Dermapen
treatments having some pain associated with it.
And so you're looking for options and strategies.
Now of course, in the absence of a physical examination or photo, I can give you some
general guidance as to how I counsel my patients who have that exact same question every day
in my practice.
A little bit of background, I'm a Board-certified cosmetic surgeon and Fellowship-trained oculofacial
plastic and reconstructive surgeon.
I have been in practice in Manhattan and Long Island for over 20 years.
Helping people with their skin has been part of my practice since the very beginning.
And even as a cosmetic surgeon who offers a wide range of surgical solutions for facial
aging, everything from eyelid surgery and helping people with puffy under eye bags and
facelifts, it's very important to still also address skin issues.
Within our practice, we do everything from non-surgical solutions whether it's skin
products to minimally invasive procedures, to lasers and various types of injectables.
And so, I've had the opportunity to deal with this issue.
Unfortunately, we have more options and I can tell you an option that sounds like an
option that I would offer someone like yourself who have this type of situation.
So before doing that, it is important to understand some of the science behind what is a challenge
at the age of 45.
And when people think of tightening their skin, it's because they naturally feel that
the skin is loose with age to a degree that's right.
However, I would also ask you to look at and consider the different elements of facial
aging that are relevant in your 40s and beyond.
And what I am speaking about is basically the foundational loss of bone and soft tissue.
And so as you get older, you lose bone.
And so when the skin kind of becomes a little more loose, people keep finding ways to tighten
the skin.
But there is a distinction there.
You can tighten up to a certain amount but when you look at the underlying issue, you
might find an opportunity that could also help you in this desire to improve your appearance.
There is a strategy we call Structural Volumizing.
And with Structural Volumizing for example in the cheek, the chin and the jawline area,
I'm actually placing a long-lasting filler such as Juvederm Ultra Plus or Juvederm Voluma
at the bone level between the bone and the muscles and it restores volume in a way that
actually helps people's skin appear tighter and look more balanced and more harmonious.
We've done this for patients who have acne scars who tried time and time again different
modalities to help their scars not appreciating the doctors previously that a little bit of
volume at the cheek level, at the bone level actually can have a significant impact.
Now to go specifically into the non-surgical approaches which are not so painful and require
minimum downtime, well one strategy we use involves lasers such as the Q Switch laser
for collagen remodeling which can have some type of tightening as well as improvement
of skin texture and quality, something you tried to accomplish with limited effectiveness
with the Fraxel.
There's also a treatment that we use with a long pulse Erbium YAG laser which actually
generated more heat into the skin and causes shrinking and tightening.
You can also consider radiofrequency such as Pelleve where there is no downtime because
the skin is left fully intact.
All of these treatments I'm actually describing all leave the skin intact.
And last but not the least but I think is also a significant advanced treatment of skin
is that when you think about the skin becoming thinner and more loose, there is a decrease
of course of something everyone knows about, collagen.
But there is also a decrease in blood supply and fat.
So we actually use this device, it looks like a microneedling device but it actually delivers
anything you want at the level of skin with no bleeding and is not painful at all.
And so what we're doing essentially for patients like yourself is we'll combine
platelet-rich plasma derived from your own blood to stimulate collagen and improve the
skin quality with hyaluronic acid filler such as Restylane and Juvederm and placing it into
the same device and delivering it in a way that basically there is essentially no down
time.
There's a slight bit of redness.
We're able to deliver into the upper levels of the dermis this great combination of materials.
So when you think about it, we have solutions that are laser or light based as well as radiofrequency
and solutions that can deliver something therapeutically without downtime.
So therefore, it is the kind of strategy that our patients are more and more gravitating
towards and is a trend that I recognized since the early 90s where patients simply don't
want downtime and want to be able to do skin maintenance with minimal downtime.
And so, a lot of the technology has improved but is not a single solution approach but
rather a synergistic multiple solution approach that I customize for every patient.
So I think that this is worthwhile considering for yourself and thinking about whether or
not this is sustainable for you.
I always teach my patients that skin management requires a commitment like exercise or diet.
You want to do things with some regularity so that you can maximize your appearance for
the long-term instead of trying to do something that is a one off and not to do anything after
that.
It's not just the way the physiology of skin works.
So consider these options and find a doctor that you can have a discussion with about
these treatment options and see if any of these work for you.
So I hope that was helpful, I wish you the best of luck and thank you for your question.

One minute on cross-border M&A trends for 2018 - Duration: 1:14.
2017 was a very strong year for cross-border, mid market M&A. Strategics had cash to use
off their balance sheets. Private equity had cash to burn. And activist shareholders were
forcing divestitures where there wasn't the right return on capital. 2018 is showing the
same characteristics. However there are some important differences. The Trump tax reforms
are definitely going to have an effect on M&A, we're just not quite sure how. The anti-trust
authorities are taking a much more active position. They're looking both at deals they've
cleared before and also looking very closely at deals that are in the marketplace. However,
where there is a strong interest in a asset, sellers can dictate terms and buyers will
just have to accept that if they want to buy the asset.

Jacob deGrom may not be ready for start of season - Duration: 5:27.
Jacob deGrom may not be ready for start of season
LUCIE — As the Mets continue a pace to set the unofficial Grapefruit League record for MRI exams, there is already one potential consequence to the early aches and pains.
Jacob deGrom, who was sidelined in recent days by lower-back stiffness, might already be up against the clock if he is to start for the Mets in the first week of the regular season, according to manager Mickey Callaway.
DeGrom joined Yoenis Cespedes (sore right shoulder) in appearing on the injury report Tuesday, before reliever Anthony Swarzak was removed from the Mets' 8-2 exhibition loss to the Astros with tightness in his left calf.
Swarzak is expected to receive an MRI exam on Wednesday. Dominic Smith is sidelined for an unspecified period with a strained right quadriceps and Juan Lagares (hamstring) has begun running at 90 percent and could soon play his first Grapefruit League game.
But it's deGrom's potential availability for the start of the season that might be the biggest question at the moment.
The right-hander encountered the lower-back stiffness after returning Saturday from a three-day paternity leave, but said he was without discomfort following a throwing session Tuesday.
DeGrom is expected to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, after which the Mets will decide the next step.
But Callaway indicated he would like each of his starting pitchers to appear at least five times in spring training (if not six) to build up their pitch counts before getting the ball in the regular season.
And with Opening Day scheduled for March 29, that could scratch deGrom from the first week.
Asked if deGrom would be ready for the first week of the season, Callaway said: "Not totally clear on that yet. We'll have to see how his throwing progression goes and kind of go from there.".
Cespedes, who homered in his Grapefruit League debut on Sunday, has been sidelined because of shoulder soreness he attributes to throwing a ball for the first time after avoiding such activity in the offseason.
He indicated the soreness is a problem he's encountered in past spring trainings and he hopes to resume playing on Friday.
"It's not something that I should be concerned or worried about," Cespedes said, adding that swinging the bat hasn't been an issue.
Swarzak broke to cover first base on a grounder in Tuesday's third inning and felt a "grab" in his left calf.
He immediately exited the game, and said he was encouraged by the fact he could walk off the field without needing assistance. "I am walking, I am standing here right now, so I think I will be OK," Swarzak said.
Smith declined to guesstimate on when he might return to action, after an MRI confirmed his strained quadriceps.
The first baseman, who sustained the injury running the bases Saturday, indicated he is not concerned about how the setback might affect his chances of making the team.
"I don't even pay attention to that," said Smith, who is potentially competing with veteran Adrian Gonzalez. "At the end of the day we've got a 22-year-old competing for a job and a potential Hall of Famer.
Whichever way it goes, I am sure Mets fans or the team will be happy with whichever situation occurs.".
On the plus side, Jay Bruce made his Grapefruit League debut for the Mets on Tuesday and went 1-for-2 as the designated hitter after missing the first four games to rest his left foot.
Bruce is battling plantar fasciitis and indicated he may have to manage the condition during the season.
