When I was growing up

there were no women in science.

My math teacher in high school

counseled me that I should go to

Harvard instead of Brown because there

was a better class of man to marry there,

and assumed that that must be why I

would be going to college.

All of my physics classes

as an undergraduate I was the only woman.

When I look back from then

there's a lot more women now, not as many

as we would like. There's a large number

of young people of both genders that

will look at that and go that's what I

want to do. I want to make a difference.

I want to help my world

but I really find science cool.

ITS AN ABSOLUTE MESS.

ONE COUNTY COMMISSIONER CALLS IT

A HOME IN THIS EYESORE.

AND THERE ARE SEVERALREASONS

WHY THIS JAIL IS A DEAD WEIGHT.

TO DEAL WITH.

MATT: IN 2015 THE COUNTY TOOK A

HARD LOOK AT THE JAIL.

IT WAS TOO EXPENSIVE TO

DEMOLISH, RENOVATIONS WOULD HAVE

COST UP TO $26 MILLION, AND NO

ONE WANTED TO BUY IT.

COMMISSIONER WAYNE JOHNSON SAYS

THE DAMAGE, AND ITS ONE

DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURE DIDN'T

HELP.

>> THERE'S NOT A LOT OF

ALTERNATIVE USES FOR A JAIL

THAT'S MEANT TO HOLD PEOPLE IN

IT.

MATT: TO THIS DAY, THE COUNTY

HASN'T FOUND AN END GAME FOR THE

JAIL.

AND IT STILL PAYS AT LEAST 85

THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR FOR THE

BULDING'S UTILITIES AND

INSURANCE.

RATHER THAN IT SIT EMPTY AND PAY

TO KEEP IT SITTING THERE.

THE HISTORIC BIOLOGY

ANNEX BUILDING. A

BEEKEEPER WAS CALLED TO

TRAP THE BEES AND

RELOCATE THEM. THAT TOOK

ABOUT TWO MONTHS. THE

BUILDING HAS BEEN

RESTUCCOED, TO KEEP BEES

OUT.

"This particular hive

had less than a dimes as

their entry hole. That's

a very small opening.,

but the scout bees found

it, a nice hollow side

on the inside and they

made a nice hive."

GROUNDSKEEPERS SAY THE

HIVE BELONGED TO HONEY

BEES, WHICH ARE NOT

AGGRESIVE. BUT MOISTURE

FROM THE HIVE COULD HAVE

CAUSED MOLD TO GROW.

Our scientific process is a mechanism

for understanding the nature of

reality. And good science is a better

representation of reality.

How do you collect data, and then use that data to

understand the world and really be

critical? Which is so important in a

democracy. And science is a way of

thinking. It's not just a set of outcomes.

When we talk about our uncertainties it

sounds as though we don't know what we

think is true. Where all we're doing is

expressing our knowledge that better

work can help us do a better job of

expressing what reality is.

Spain's King Felipe set for June UK state visit as Gibraltar row rumbles on - Duration: 2:02.

King Felipe VI of Spain�s state visit to the UK from June 6 to 8 means the Queen will

be invited to make a return visit to Spain her first since 1988.

Can she do this and avoid Gibraltar, which she has not visited since 1954 to avoid upsetting

the Spanish government and monarchy?

In 1988, she went no further south than Seville, despite pleas from Gibraltarians.

Otherwise her visit would have been cancelled.

King Juan Carlos refused to attend Charles and Diana�s wedding in 1981 after it was

announced that their honeymoon cruise would begin from the Rock.

Discussing 49 year old Felipe�s coming visit originally scheduled for spring last year

March For Science LA - "One Half" - Duration: 1:01.

When I got into science there were very, very few women.

We've got a long way to go.

Science is better if more people are

asking different kinds of questions in different ways.

There are more and more women certainly in the life sciences

There is a great deficit of women in the engineering side.

And there's still a lot issues.

One of them is the fact

that we're often in a situation that in

elementary school we're communicating

that fear of math and suddenly tying it to gender.

We have to be training more scientists

and our demographics are such that

we have to think very deeply about

how we make sure that access to science education

is much more equitable than it is now.
