Pruning Fig Trees – Family Plot - Duration: 8:32.

- So I'm here with Mr Bill.

We're at the Memphis Botanic Gardens and we're gonna prune some figs.

- What's left of some figs.

- What's left of some figs.

- We've already had an abnormally warm spring.

- [Chris] Yes we have.

- Before Spring got here, in fact.

And figs, which are a tender plant, had started to put out.

Normally they would not have produced any fresh leaves until at least May, and some

of them in June.

So we've had an unusual growth.

We also had four days of cold weather, extremely cold for this time of year, last week.

And so on our fig trees we have what only a few days ago were nice green new growth,

as far as the fig is concerned.

Now we have two things here, as far as taking care of the figs.

If you prune too early, which we're not going to prune too early for this year because of

the give and take of the weather, these have died back and this time we don't know to what

extent.

Because each one of these leaf nodes, which is just a little lump right on the side of

the tree, is a potential for a bud.

These budded out and then got hit with 34 degrees weather and being a very tender plant

it just curled up and died on us, and dried out in a few days.

Now, if some of the figs have not put out at all, do not be concerned if yours doesn't.

In fact, the one that hasn't put out yet may be in better shape than the one that did and

then got frozen back.

But there again, that's not for the home owner to worry about because even if we had to say

this tree is not going to bear for the year and why are we even fooling with it, you can

take a saw, four, five inches off the ground, take the whole thing out, and before the season's

over, if you treated it properly, it will be anywhere from six to eight feet tall.

- Alright Mr Bill, we're gonna let you have at it.

We're gonna let you start pruning this fig tree for us.

- Well, first thing we need to look at on this tree, we want a good sturdy branch to

support the bulk of the tree.

When you look at this, it had, at one time, a single trunk.

Now, from the old trunk dying out, the two, four, six, eight, 10, 12, about 14 small ones.

Now you don't want that.

So you select.

This is one of the sturdier ones.

That's a sturdy one down at the base.

But those others are laying on the ground.

That's what they're gonna do when they mature.

They get up here and run out like these little bunchy ones here.

As they grow the weight'll get to 'em, they're down at the ground anyway, and it'll pull

it to the ground and pop the stump out.

- [Chris] I gotcha.

- So you wanna pick out two, three, maybe four and take out all the immature ones around

it.

These leaf nodes right here are pointing all different directions.

If you cut it in here where the leaf nodes are thick you're gonna get a burst of little

limbs in there.

Very desirable for a small tree.

And you want limbs with leaf nodes for making fruit, not a long spindly plant like this

one has got.

Alright, if you wanna have figs to eat but you don't have a huge amount of space then

you might want to come in here about head height and do your cutting.

The problem is, if you do your cutting too soon as some of us have done, because I had

to, I was shaping my tree for visual effect as well as bearing fruit.

But by pruning it back early this is a fairly hollow stem right here.

If you get a little moisture in here and then the frost hits it, it will just explode the

limb, occasionally, if it's extreme.

So we've got six leaders here.

I would take two more out.

Most gardeners do not prune as much as needed to be pruned.

They're always afraid they're going to ruin the plant, whether it's a fig plant, any of

the fruits that cluster on there.

You're doing yourself a disfavor if you don't thin 'em out.

The ones who are here to Memphis Botanic Gardens, when we had an orchard here, we had a rule

of five inches apart on prune.

People get very upset when you tell them that, but you'll have more poundage of fruit if

you've properly pruned it than if you just let it stay there.

Also, when you make a cut this severe, pick out where you want the replacement limb to

come.

You've got a marker there already on the plant where the leaf node's gonna come out, so that

one, if cut off here, is gonna go this direction.

And if you can get several leaf nodes in here on a cut like that, then you come up with

a lot more fruiting because this is gonna throw a cluster of new growth.

- [Chris] Gotcha.

- If you wanna root you some plants from this, five new leaf nodes from your trimming.

At least two leaf nodes, I prefer three, below soil level, two above, so that you've got

a place for the first green limbs to come out.

So that's just the basic way.

That one doesn't need to be in here at all.

It's running parallel to the ground, not upright.

- There you go.

- Okay, so started coming around.

One more cut.

And now we have, we gotta take that one out.

Some one who needs a plant, you pick it up, there are not any roots on that one so we

can take the whole thing out.

And that is basically the shape, a basic shape.

- Basic shape.

- [Mike] A lot of people may think it's surprising

that somewhere such as Dubai

in the middle of the Middle East would offer hockey,

but people wanna come and play with us.

They're playing for the love of the game.

(techno music)

My name is Mike Freeson,

and the team I play on is the Dubai Mighty Camels.

To come to a place where you only can play indoors,

and even then it sometimes is too hot,

the air conditioning can't keep up,

it's quite a bit different than my experience back home,

that's for sure.

Grew up in rural Alberta, Canada,

so it was basically in your blood to play hockey.

Like every kid in Canada, we all dream to play pro someday,

and now in Dubai, I'm able to do that.

(horn blows)

(synthesizer music)

EHL stands for Emirates Hockey League, and it was created

just to get the best hockey players in the UAE

into a competitive league

to build and develop their local players.

(whistle blows)

We have six teams in the league this year.

We've had players that have played pro,

they've played high college level in the States,

high college level, university level, in Canada.

We have players that played pro in Europe.

All different levels.

(synthesizer music)

In Dubai, we don't have a local team of Emiratis,

but we play against the locals in Abu Dhabi and in Al Ain.

Playing in Dubai Mall exposes it to a lot more people.

It really brings more people to the game.

You know, when you're in Dubai Mall and you're playing

and you're surrounded by a thousand people,

who 60% of them probably have never seen it before,

it's a special feeling.

It's an honor to be able to do that.

Obviously, I think it's the best sport in the world.

It's great to see that you're making

some sort of contribution to expanding the sport

and promoting it in parts of the world

where it's not natural to be played.

Q&A – Can I power wash a crape myrtle to remove bark scale? - Duration: 1:44.

- [Chris] I saw landscapers power washing Crape Myrtle trees last summer to remove scale.

Is this a good way to treat Crape Myrtle scale?

Does it do any harm to the plant?

This is from Tom in Bartlett.

So they're out there power washing the Crape Myrtles to knock of the Crape Myrtle bark

scale, which is a recommendation.

What do you think about that?

Will it harm the tree?

- It depends on the power washer.

- [Chris] Depends on the power washer.

- If you're just washing it off, scrubbing it off, and it's not tearing into the bark

of the plant it's probably a good thing.

But I've seen power washers that could just about eat concrete.

If it's stripping bark, if it's doing damage to the bark, then don't do it.

It just depends on your power washer and how close you, and how you handle your power washer.

- Okay, and the spray itself, if you're doing a pin point spray, I mean, you can knock off

some bark.

- You can prune with it.

- Right, my goodness.

But you know, Dr Frank Hale, you know Dr Hale, entomologist for extension, talks about using

an angled 15% fan spray, okay?

And he said that will actually do some good.

Angled 15% fan spray would actually do some good.

- So that's why, you're not pointing it directly.

- Yeah, you're not pointing directly at it.

But yeah, pinpoint spray or something like that, especially close, you would blow bark

of the tree.

Mineral Point 4th graders testify at the Capitol for cheese bill - Duration: 1:51.

Cheese!

In my three years up here, it's probably one of the

funnest hearings I've ever had.

Gorgonzola, chicken soup cheese

By a show of hands who enjoys eating cheese?

Aged cheddar, Asiago

That's what I thought.

Our class is working to make a new state symbol of Wisconsin

It would be the 31st one and it's

proposing to make cheese the new state dairy product of Wisconsin.

Feta, Gouda, blue cheese

I am tremendously proud from where they started this process last fall

to where they are here today and just listening to them speak today

it's obvious they know their cheese they know the industry and I'm

just immensely proud to have these kids in my assembly district

And of course, the stinky smelling Limburger cheese

cheese is just so important to Wisconsin

we made cheese curds, lots of Wisconsinites love pizza.

Cheese is just so important to our state.

thinking about Wisconsin's impressive cheese industry

I can't believe we haven't recognized this as our official state dairy product.

I like custard.

(laughing)

Can you tell me why cheese should be the

dairy product and not custard?

One of the facts says 90% of the thirty billion pounds of milk

that our dairy cows produce is turned into cheese.

And only 10% of the milk they produce stays milk

and probably some of that also goes into making other

dairy foods. But most of it goes into making cheese.

Very good answer!

(Laughter)

what do you think of the hearing?

Good? Good!

Representative Todd Novak and Senator Howard Marklein those two were

a really big help in this process

I have a really good feeling that this will pass and we'll have it on the governor's desk.

Thanks everybody for coming!

Organizing Your Google Drive--The Tech Exchange: Ideas for Staff by Staff--Episode 4 - Duration: 3:33.

(upbeat music)

(music fades out)

Hi Sarah, do you have a second?

Oh hey Kay! How are you?

Good. Good.

Of Course! What's up?

Well, I want to show you my Google Drive.

Well, I was having trouble finding Google Documents that I was creating

I felt that I was wasting a lot of time.

Yep, I have the same problem.

I'm really excited because I got all of this organized

and I thought that this would be a great tip for the Tech Exchange

Absolutely! Can you show me?

You bet!

I started by creating folders to put those loose documents in

If you come up here to your Google Drive and click on new

It opens up a new folder

OK.

Ok, now Kay I have to ask you, what's with the 13?

Well the 13 would be the next one in numerical order

and then the Google Drive automatically puts your folders in alphabetical order

if you don't have the numbers

so if you have the numbers, then they go into the importance of...

...of your daily use.

For example, school districts, even though that's "S"

if you were just to go alphabetical order, it would be down here

but i want it at number 1 because I use it so often.

So, the more important folders, you want to filter to the top...

so the numbers help you bring it to the top?

Correct.

Kay that is a great idea! I bet that saves you a ton of time

searching for things that you use on a regular basis.

It does!

Another trick that I use is that I assign colors for my folders.

And I'm gonna show you how to do this just by

hovering over here and right-clicking

to change colors

and then choose a color

Click on that.

...and that changes the color

So, it's just another way to help me be a little more organized.

Would you mind showing me how you move something that somebody has shared with you

into one of your folders?

This helps me to add a shared document...

something that somebody has shared with me

and putting it in my drive.

OK.

And how you do that is by clicking on things that have been shared with you...

So, "Shared with Me"...

those are things that people have created, they want you to have access to it...

and the share it with you?

Correct.

OK, and so that's where it shows up...

and they're not organized I noticed.

No, not at all.

So, here's Thursday's potluck...

This is a potluck they're having at one of my schools, so...

This is what i'm going to move into...

Right here.

to add to my drive

So that really takes it out of the "Shared with Me" folder and puts it into your drive

so you can organize it?

That's correct.

Oh!

That's correct, and then the potluck is at Elk Run Schools so I'm just gonna

click it right here

OK.

and we'll move it right into that folder.

Thanks Kay!

You're welcome!

I hope that this tip is useful to others.

GFL Environmental Safe Employer Award Video - Duration: 1:01.

GFL's motto is "Green Today. Green For Life."

and that pairs well with our safety motto which is "Safe For Life."

Mission Zero is one of the most important factors that our staff, our employees, and

even our customers demand every day.

It's something that we strive toward and believe in.

Every employee has the right to go home to their families

in the same condition that they came to work in.

We take safety home in everything that we do.

We have to.

It has to be part of how we live and how we think and how our brains look at some

of the different hazards and risks in our work environment and our home environments.

The safer we are at work and the more we build those skills and that environment —

the safer we can be at home.

The reverse is true as well.

A safe organization is a stronger organization.

As we work towards that excellence, we see it every day.

He said, "That's my job for the rest of my life.

I want to work at Food City."

Shane at first just wanted to be a bagger.

He didn't realize how much he's actually capable of,

and there's more jobs he can actually do.

"What do you think you want to do when you graduate?"

Become a courtesy clerk, get promoted, become a cashier.

Work in the dairy department.

Work in the meat department.

Work in the deli.

"You like talking to the customers and seeing them come through?"

Yeah!

"Do you have any favorites?

Does anybody recognize you?"

A whole bunch of people do!

He has just thrived.

The customers there all know him by name.

We have people that actually shop there just because they want to see Shane and those other

students that we have there.

They want to see his face.

They enjoy him bagging their groceries for them.

It gets them ready.

It gets them engaged with people, because we have a lot of customers here.

And when you engage, and then you understand the task of it, really that's what it's about.

The students change so dramatically.

They just take on a whole new persona.

Parents begin to see their students and their children

in a different light while they're working.

A lot of our students when they were graduating school, they were just going home.

They weren't going to college.

They weren't even going to a community college.

They had nothing in place for them after they left.

There was no plan for them when they graduated.

Now, we have a plan for those students.

"Ah!

Got it!"

It's not an actual pretty bad job actually.

I like to get things done fast!

"And the last one!"

Caleb, when he first started at Food City, he was mainly just bagging groceries.

We noticed with Caleb that it was almost like he was getting a little bit bored, and he

kept on coming to me saying, "I really would like to work back there in the bakery."

We approached the manager and told him that Caleb would just really want an opportunity,

and the manager, he was all for it.

He said, "Let's give him a shot!"

And that's all that he wanted.

He just wanted an opportunity.

I like to cook customers' orders.

I bag the chicken like I just did right here.

I help make cornbread, mashed potatoes, and clean.

His coworkers are just thrilled every day he comes in, and they cannot believe how much

he has learned so quickly.

It actually makes me feel...good!

It's a win because we get the push we needed, they get the experience, they get the customer

service, and it makes them better and more ready for the real world.

This makes Kingsport a better place to live because we have more positive settings for

not just our students with disabilities but everybody who lives here.

We don't want to stop at just those 4 businesses.

We would like to continue and to branch out into all different types of work.

Industry, medicine, whatever else we can do to help the community and help these students.

I don't want to put a cap on it.

We really believe in it and want to be able to share this with lots of students who need it.

The joy that you can see on those kids faces of realizing that they're going to have that

same opportunity like every other person in this world is just,

there's no greater feeling than that.

How to Make A Center Pull Yarn Ball | SewBrenna - Duration: 5:55.

Do you have sad yarn skeins?

Let's turn that frown upside down!

I'm going to show you how to make a center pull yarn skein with just your dancing phalanges.

Yay!! Jazz hands.

If you would like to have a label so you can tell what brand and the dye lot in case you

need to buy more the name and all that good information.

You'll also need a pair of paper scissors, and a safety pin, and possibly a Sharpie.

'Cause like I had to write down the brand.

Take the end of your yarn.

Loop it over your hand.

And then loop it several more times.

Rather loosely.

I'm calling that fine for me.

Take that off.

Leave the end nice and loose.

And then you'll wrap perpendicularly, that's a fun word, around loose.

Very loose.

'Cause if you do this part too tight it will be very difficult to pull it out from

the center.

Been there, done that.

So once you get it nice and fat-ish.

I'll go up this way a bit more.

Just keep this little guy free because that's the part you'll pull out when you get back

to this unused bit of yarn that you have.

So wrap that nice and thick.

And then you'll turn it and wrap diagonally.

Loosely, again, stay loose.

And then once you get a good amount there, slightly

turn. Whoops.

Sometimes I like to do an 'x'.

So I just turn that, oh gosh, I'm making a mess.

So then you'll turn it and wrap it again.

I usually have the skein of yarn, oh I could still do that.

Usually have the skein on the floor.

Be free!

Just jumped. "Wee!"

And you will just continue to wrap, and wrap, and wrap, and turn.

So I'm going to turn, and continue wrapping.

And the trick to getting it mostly flat on the bottom is to come along close to where

your original was that was around your hand.

'Cause this guy, he's nice and flat on the bottom.

I am proud of that one.

Try not to do it too tightly.

Looseness is a good thing.

But then once it gets larger you can start wrapping more tightly.

Your little friend here will try and get trapped up in the wrapping.

So try and keep him loose.

I usually stick him on the other side of my hand and then wrap.

Okay, here is my end.

Follow it around.

And then tuck it in.

Right like that.

My bottom isn't very flat, on this little skein.

Oh there! That's kind of helping!

Sometimes you can pull it as you go.

See if he sits…

Yay!!

He sits!

Good boy.

[Laughing] So there you have it.

And then you just pull from that end.

And he will mostly sit still.

So he doesn't roll all over the room, you don't have to chase him.

Now I'm going to make my little label.

Cut this apart.

Cut the label just where I need it.

Don't need that.

And then take a little safety pin.

Poke that- oh wait, oh oh.

Flying flying.

I'm going to write down the brand on this really quick.

I really do "Love this Yarn".

It's so soft!

Hobby Lobby, you did a good job on that.

Hashtag: not sponsored.

And then just poke it through some of the end pieces.

And you can throw it in your yarn bin.

And you will still know what it is, where it came from, and who its family is.

As I was taking the thumbnail for this picture I was thinking to myself, "This reminds

me of that Hefty commercial for those trash bags."

"Wimpy wimpy wimpy" "Hefty Hefty Hefty".

I'm not sponsored, I just have an odd brain.
