[Text on screen]: Audiology Design Hearing Aid Styles
Hearing aids are available
in more styles and sizes than ever before
thanks to the miniaturization of electronics, and
a new focus in the hearing aid industry
on style and design.
The style you choose is influenced
by a couple different factors which all
should be discussed with your hearing professional.
The first factor you should discuss with your hearing professional
is the degree of hearing loss you have.
The more hearing loss, the more power
you will need from your hearing aid, and
each hearing aid's style is appropriate
for different degrees of hearing loss.
The second factor is your cosmetic preference.
Many consumers seek hearing aids
that are not noticeable, and others
this isn't as important.
And, lastly, is your dexterity ability.
Hearing aids are small and must be
inserted and removed from your ear, and
some styles are more appropriate and suited for dexterity issues.
First, we'll take a look at a few examples
of in-the-ear hearing aid styles.
Hearing aids worn in the ear are
custom fit based on an impression made of your ear.
There are several different types.
Here, I will show you three different styles.
The first in-the-ear style we'll take a look at is the
completely in-the-canal hearing aid, also called a CIC.
These are the smallest custom hearing aids available,
and sit deep within the ear canal.
They're ideal for mild to moderate hearing losses,
and offer high cosmetic appeal,
as they are barely noticeable
when inserted into the ear canal.
Next, is the half shell model.
This style fills up half of the outer bowl of the ear,
and because of a slightly larger size than the CIC,
it can host additional features
such as directional microphone.
The half shell also fits mild to moderate hearing losses.
And, lastly is the full shell model,
also called in-the-ear or ITE hearing aids.
As you can see, the full shell will fill up the entire outer bowl of the ear,
and this size allows maximum number of features.
Because of their larger size and flexibility,
they fit a wider range of hearing losses, from mild to severe.
The next general type of hearing aid style
are behind-the-ear hearing aids,
also referred to as BTE hearing aids.
The difference between custom hearing aids,
is, for BTEs, the hearing aid
actually sits behind your ear and routes sound
down into your ear canal via plastic tubing.
BTEs come in a variety of styles
to offer various features and fit
varying degrees of hearing losses,
from mild to severe and profound.
The first type of BTE we'll take a look at a
is a traditional BTE coupled to a custom ear mold.
The custom ear mold is made based on
the impression taken of your ear.
These are ideal for hearing losses that range
anywhere from mild up until profound.
The next type of BTE is called
an open fit BTE, and this is actually
the newest generation of BTE hearing aids.
The benefit of an open BTE is that
instead of a custom ear mold,
instead you have a thin plastic tubing routing sound
into the ear canal coupled to a small dome.
The benefit of this small dome is that
it doesn't block or occlude your ear canal,
allowing a natural open fit of the hearing aid.
Users like this feel because,
although the hearing aid is providing them
amplification for their hearing loss,
their ear canal remains open,
and they're still able to hear some sounds naturally.
This is an example of an open fit BTE
when inserted into the ear.
The hearing aid sits nestled behind my outer ear lobe,
and the thin plastic tubing will route sound down into my ear canal.
As you can see, an open fit BTE offers a
high cosmetic appeal for users seeking
the hearing aid that isn't as noticeable.
As you can see, there's a wide variety of
hearing aid styles to choose from today.
You're probably wondering,
"How do I choose one that's right for me?"
The best option is to discuss the factors we mentioned
with your hearing professional
to ensure you choose the right hearing aid style
that best meets your hearing loss and needs.
