We met nine years ago this year
in Brisbane at one of the local pubs there
on ANZAC Day of all days and just grew from there, didn't it really?
Grew and grew.
We both love music, motorsports and the rugby,
we just seem to click on a lot of things, you know.
We had been together for about 4 and a half years
when this all happen to us.
We had a pretty strong foundation beforehand
so that was probably a good thing.
Went in and had some investigative tests
tests done and was diagnosed with
ulcerative colitis which is basically a
quite a severe inflammation of the bowel.
Smell the lovely aroma! (laughs)
Six days after being in hospital and they
found that my bowel had perforated so I
went downhill really quickly.
And I got a phone call when I was going to work
from the doctor saying you better rush in
it's not looking too flash.
I was pretty much at the hospital everyday, pretty much from then.
I contracted septicemia.
As a result of the life support keeping my main organs alive
the oxygen couldn't get to my hands and my feet
my oxygen levels got down so low
that they actually only gave me a
five percent chance of survival so a bit
like gangrene they just went black and
it eventually died off and so had to have
them amputated.
I had to learn how to talk again and
cough, sneeze and I mean it seems like
something so simple but they were all
little goals that I had and then it
became feeding myself and you know doing
my hair and my makeup and dressing
myself and then walking a few steps.
Well the biggest statement that we
probably hear is, Craig good on you for
sticking around, kind of thing that we hear
from quite a few people and that
sort of blows us both away really.
I look at as though you know you put yourself
in their new situation you'd want
someone to be there for you as well.
and for me it didn't even cross the line, you know.
If you love the person you are there for them thick or thin.
Would we change our life now, if we had a chance
we wouldn't, we actually enjoy our life the way it is.
