I'm a long time resident of the Wollar community.

I love living here, because it is a beautiful part of New South Wales

and I've put all my time and energy into this community for over 30 years.

And I'm going to fight to save it.

When the exploration started for the Wilpinjong Mine, it was in 1998,

and a lot of people were quite happy to take at face value

the information that they were being given...

that the mine would be a great thing for our community.

In hindsight, what we found out, was the whole thing was stitched up.

So the people that got the exploration licence already had purchased the key properties,

already had people sign confidentiality agreements that they would not talk to their neighbours.

So right from day one, the business of getting in and splitting up the community happened quite quickly.

It was a big wake-up call once the mine started working 24 hours a day.

People suddenly realised: This is not what we were expecting.

In fact, this is horrible.

We cannot sleep.

And we're already quite heavily impacted now by the noise from that mine.

And then everything totally covered in black dust.

And the stench of it just permeated the village, got into people's houses, day and night,

woke them up, nauseated them, the kids had headaches.

It was an absolute nightmare.

Area by area, valley by valley, got bought up by the mine

until we're at the stage we are now where we've hardly got anyone left.

And what we've got is a Government that's refusing to acknowledge those levels of impacts

on people's lives near an open-cut coal mine.

The best thing that could happen would be for the mine would gradually wind back

its impacts, the noise and the dust would gradually decrease,

the people that work there would have the time to forward-plan.

We know there are people that would love to move back to this area or buy into this area.

So having Peabody Energy starting to put the properties that they own back on the market

so that we can have families move back into the area, that we can share the joy of living

in such a beautiful place.
