Hi, I'm Taniya,
I'm a Graduate Recruiter here at Telstra.
We know that when applying for graduate programs
there are a lot of steps and stages to go through
but getting that successful phone call is very rewarding,
and so is joining the graduate program.
To help you out, we've put together this video
which will guide you through one of the key recruitment stages:
the Assessment Centre.
So what's an Assessment Centre, and what's it really all about?
An Assessment Centre sounds really daunting - but it isn't.
The main purpose of the Assessment Centre
is for us to see how you react in a group scenario,
and how you work with other people.
This helps us to see you demonstrate your creativity and your leadership skills,
and it also shows us how you react in different situations,
with different people.
You won't find yourself sitting in an exam hall,
completing a whole series of essays.
It's actually quite the opposite.
Our Assessment Centre activities are hosted
in one of the Telstra offices, like the one I'm in right now.
It's hosted across different city locations.
On the day you'll be joined by around 18 to 26 graduates.
You'll be split into smaller teams of around 4-6 on the day,
so you can really expect to get to know your team mates better.
You'll be taking part in some group activities
followed by an individual presentation.
Our recruitment team will be facilitating
and well as working with you on the day
and we'll be looking for things like how well you collaborate with your team mates,
communicate with each other and problem solve together.
Now I'm sure you'll all have plenty of experiences working together in groups.
I mean we've all done uni assignments right?
So it's important to really be yourself
and let your personality shine!
If you are a bit introverted, please make sure that you speak up
and let other people see who you really are.
If you just sit back and you don't contribute,
it makes it really hard for the recruitment team to assess you.
On the flip side, if you are an extrovert,
don't try and be too dominant, and really try and outshine the others,
let the others speak as well and try and seek contribution from them.
Now you'll also need to review and prepare a short presentation
for the final activity on the Assessment Centre day.
You will receive details about this presentation
the day before the Assessment Centre.
So like with everything, it's very good to be prepared.
To help you in your preparation, we really want you
to find out as much as you can about Telstra
as well as the Grad Program.
Drawing back on this information will help to highlight
that you understand the bigger picture.
It will also help you to communicate to us how you see your role
fitting into the company's strategic direction.
Our Assessment Centre's one of the key recruitment stages,
so make sure that you dress to impress
and arrive with plenty of time before your session is due to start.
Being invited to an assessment centre is a great achievement
and it's a bit different compared to an interview,
It's a great chance for us to get to know you
and for you to get to know the company better as well.
Hopefully these tips and tricks will shed a bit more light
into your next stage of the graduate assessment process.
So, we'll see you at the Assessment Centre, and good luck!
