What God Expects From His Church - The Church - Duration: 37:46.
1 What God Expects From His Church
Philippians 1:18-30 In this first chapter the Apostle Paul writes
to this church at Philippi – a church that he himself founded
and pastured.
A church in which the power of God was manifested in
a great way.
He explains his present imprisonment.
His imprisonment had caused some concern in the church, and some of Paul's
colleagues were trying to use this incident to undermine his
ministry.
There had been unjust persecution, unfair criticism,
concerning Paul, and this had caused some concern among the brethren.
But, as always, the Apostle Paul was never under the circumstances,
he is always on top of them.
As always, whatever is over Paul's head is under Christ's feet.
And so, he is on top of the situation.
And in a situation where you would not expect to find rejoicing and an
optimistic spirit, you find this man rejoicing always, and admonishing this
church to rejoice.
And so this is the background for today's study.
There are two verses I want to call your attention two.
Verse 20 says, "According to my earnest expectation
and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as
always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life
or by death."
The important thing, according to Paul, is not
living or dying, that is a side issue, the important thing is that "Christ
will be magnified in my body."
That when people look at my life, my life becomes for them a
telescope, which brings Jesus, which is a far off, close to them.
That my life might reveal to the people that I
come in contact with how big, how marvelous, how tremendous, our Lord
really is.
And verse 27 says, "Only let your conduct be worthy
of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent,
I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit,
with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel."
Notice the word "only."
There is only one thing that should captivate the attention
and desire of the believer.
There is only one thing that should hold the imagination, and harness
2 the energy of the believer – that your total
manner of life "be worthy of the gospel of Christ."
In verse 20 Paul is speaking personally, "Christ will be magnified
in my body."
But in verse 27 he is speaking publicly to the church as a
whole, "Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ."
And this is what Christ expects from every believer!
For some reason or other, the last few months I have been
thinking a great deal, and the Lord has been prodding my mind to
think a great deal about this church; about where we are, what we
have done, and what the Lord has done through us, and where we are
headed.
And I have been revaluating a great many things about my
own personal life, my own ministry as pastor of this church, and the
ministry of this church as a whole.
And the one phrase that keeps coming back to me is found in Luke 12:48 where
Jesus said, "For everyone to whom much is given, from him much
will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they
will ask the more."
And I have to acknowledge today that "much" has been given to this
church, therefore "much" is required!
What does God require from a church that has been given
"much"?
The answer is found in verse 27, "Only (regardless of what the
future holds, regardless of your circumstances) let your conduct (your
whole manner of life) be worthy of the gospel of Christ."
Paul is saying we are to let our knowledge and understanding
"of the gospel of Christ" regulate all that we do, and all
that we say, as we walk down the corridors of life.
How do we go about accomplishing this task and
responsibility?
He gives us three ways.
The first thing God expects for us is that we "stand fast in one
spirit."
So Paul says, "Whether I come and see you or am absent, I may
hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit."
The word "stand" is a military word, which means, "to hold
your ground."
In other words, Paul is saying, "Make sure you hold the
ground that God has given you."
The indication here is there is a warfare going on within the realms
3 of the spiritual world, and indeed there is!
But God through His grace, and through the gospel of Christ, has
enabled us to win certain victories and to gain certain ground.
Therefore, Paul is saying to us today, "Stand your ground!
This is not the time to get negative, and want to give up!
This is not the time to let them enemy get a 'foot hold'
into the fellowship of believers."
This is one of Paul's favorite words.
For example in Ephesians 6:11 he says, "Put on the whole armor of
God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."
In verse 14 he says, "Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth,
having put on the breastplate of righteousness."
Over and over again the Word of God admonishes us "to hold our ground."
And that is a quality that God demands of every child of God!
There is nothing that brings dishonor to the heart of God any sooner than retreating
Christians!
This idea of "standing fast" or "holding our ground" indicates two
things.
Number one, it indicates there is a constant pressure placed
on the Christian by the world and Satan to make us retreat, and there
is!
I find that it is not easy to "stand fast."
It is not always easy to "hold your ground."
In fact, I have found it is easier to gain ground
than it is to maintain the ground we have gained!
It is easier to gain the victory than it is to maintain the victory.
It is easier to be filled with the Spirit than it is to stay filled with
the Spirit!
There is a constant pressure placed on the church, and on the
believer, to retreat, and to give up some of the ground we have gained
for the glory of God!
This truth is seen in the Book of Exodus when the children of
Israel were moving into the Promised Land.
In Exodus 23:29 God says, "I will not drive them out from before
you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the beasts of the field
become too numerous for you."
I often wondered why God did not just give them total victory
of the entire land!
One of the important factors of warfare is this –
"Whatever you conquer you must occupy."
In order for a country to be conquered and remain conquered you must
have sufficient 4
supplies and strength to occupy that country!
And it is much easier to conquer ground than it is to hold your
ground!
And that is what God was saying to the children of Israel,
"If I were to drive out the entire inhabitants of the land right now, you are
not strong enough, you do not have enough people, to occupy that much land,
and after a while the land will be grown up."
Now please hear me well right here!
I doubt very seriously God is going to give THIS church any more ground
until He sees whether or not we are going to hold the ground we
already have!!
We talk about new members, but how many families have
you invited to meet you here lately?
We talk about our Worship Services, but what about your
faithfulness?
We talk about the finances, but what about your giving
record?
Remember these words of Jesus, "For everyone to whom much
is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been
committed, of him they will ask the more."
There is another thing we need to realize concerning this
matter of "standing fast," and this is this – not only is there pressure
from Satan and world on us to retreat, there is always an inner
tendency for us to "give up" and go back!
God put it this way in Hosea 11:7, "My people are bent on backsliding
from Me."
But what does that mean?
It simply means it is easier to backslide than it is to
"hold your ground."
It is easier not to pray than it is to pray.
It is easier not to read the Bible than it is to
read the Bible.
It is easier not to come to church than it is to come to church.
It is easier not to share your faith than it is to witness.
There is a natural tendency towards sinfulness!
And we would just allow ourselves to do so – we would be
just as mean, just a wicked as we have ever been!
Therefore, God says, "My people are bent on backsliding
from Me."
The second thing God expects from us is to work together.
Verse 27 says, "Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ,
so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your
affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together
5 for the faith of the gospel."
The word "striving" indicates, "It is not
always easy to work together."
In other words, God expects us to put forth an effort to work "together"!
God expects us to "stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving
together for the faith of the gospel."
Satan wants just the opposite!
Satan wants division, jealousy, and hurt feelings!
Therefore, unity and togetherness is something that we have to
work for if we are going to be successful in ministry!
There has always been the danger of a few people trying to
disrupt the unity of the fellowship of believers.
Paul put it this way in 1 Corinthians 1:10, "Now I plead with you,
brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the
same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly
joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment."
Jesus addressed this matter of unity in Matthew 12:25, "Every kingdom divided
against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house
divided against itself will not stand."
And finally, Paul says this in Romans 16:17, "Now I urge
you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to
the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them."
Satan would like nothing better than to see God's people
divided and pulling against each other.
But God expects us to "strive" for the unity of the ministry
of this church.
Our goal should be one goal and that is to bring honor to
the Lord of Glory!
The last thing God expects from us to walk in our victory!
Verse 28 says, "And not
in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to
them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God."
In order for us to accomplish what God expects from us we must put
aside our fear! Roosevelt was right when he said, "The only thing we
have
to fear is fear itself."
We have this reminder in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God has not given us
a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a
sound mind."
We have this word of encouragement in 1 Corinthians 16:13, "Watch, stand fast in the faith,
be brave, be strong."
Listen to 6
Hebrews 2:14, "Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh
and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death
He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil."
Jesus took a body of flesh and blood, so that we could partake
spirit and life.
But in order for us to operate in that spiritual authority that God has already made available,
we must take the responsibility of standing in the place of
authority as the new creation in Christ Jesus that we are!
We stand in this place and say over and over
that "we are more than conquerors that Christ who loved us," but
now is the time to start living as if we are!!
My prayer is that God will give us the grace to hold our ground
in
the unity
of our faith, as we go forth boldly for the glory of God
in the months ahead!
This morning God
has spoken to some of
you concerning your salvation needs.
God has spoken to some of you concerning your
church membership.
And I
have no doubt God has spoken to some of you
about your faithfulness in church attendance.
Stand
for prayer.
Father, Your Word is true.
I truly am more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus.
Give
me
the courage to stand in
faith
and
hold fast to my spiritual ground.
In Jesus' name.
