I have a question

When is the most depressing day of the year?

Every year there is a day in the calendar called the most Depressing Day of the Year

It's said to be linked to: Bad winter weather, rising debt from Christmas, and failing New Year's Resolutions.

Dr. Cliff Arnall devised an equation to calculate the exact day.

Tt = travel time; D = delays; C = time spent on cultural activities; R = time spent relaxing; ZZ = time spent sleeping; St = time spent in a state of stress; P = time spent packing; Pr = time spent in preparation

The answer from Dr. Cliff Arnall's equation is the 3rd Monday in January

This is essentially the worst Monday in the calendar

What is a good speech for you? あなたにとって、「いいスピーチ」とはどんなスピーチでしょうか？

The word "good" can have a lot of meanings. 「いい」という言葉には色々な意味がありますね。

It could be interesting, 面白い、ということかもしれないし、

touching, motivating and more. 感動する。駆り立てられる。その他にもありますね。

Now let's think about the benefits we can receive from a good speech. では、いいスピーチから私たちは何を得られるのかを考えてみましょう。

We can gain knowledge,passion, jokes 知識、情熱、ジョーク、

connection, trust and better understanding. 繋がり、信頼、より深い理解、などを得ることができるでしょう。

But above all these things, I think awareness of your true self is the でも、何よりも一番価値のあるものは、

most valuable thing we can receive. 本当の自分に気づくことなのだと私は思います。

The other day I was talking with my friend about the essence of a great live concert. 先日、友人といいコンサートの条件について話していました。

She told me a comment by Wayne Shorter, a jazz saxophone player. 彼女は、ウェイン・ショーターというジャズのサックス奏者の言葉を教えてくれました。

I can't remember the exact word, but the idea was that a good concert is not the one where you get a 正確な言葉は覚えていないのですが、考え方としては「いいコンサートというのは、

storm of applause. It's the one which reminds people who they really are. 拍手喝采を浴びることではなく、聴衆が本来の自分を呼び覚ますことなのだ」ということです。

I thought it's exactly the same with speeches. If you are a technically trained speaker, スピーチにも同じことが言えると思います。 もしも、技術を持ったスピーカーであれば、

you can make people laugh and cry and motivate them with little effort, which is great because ほんの少しの力で、人を笑わせ、涙を流させ、モチベートすることができるでしょう。 それは素晴らしいことです。

not many speakers can do that. But the truly good speeches dig deeper in people's mind 多くのスピーカーができることではありませんから。 でも、本当に良いスピーチは、人の心の奥深くを掘り起こし、

and light them up from inside, so that the person can become aware of who they really are. 内面から照らし、本来の自分に気づかせてくれるものです。

Sometimes their true selves are hidden for so long, the audience might shed tears. 時に、本来の自分があまりにも長いこと隠れ続けていたために涙を流すこともあるでしょう。

But it's not the speaker who made it happen, but the audience themselves. でもそれは、スピーカーではなく、聴衆本人が起こしていることなのです。

The speech could be the trigger, but it's always the audience who find themselves. スピーチはきっかけにはなります。でも、自分自身を見つけるのは必ず聴衆本人なのです。

When you are getting used to standing on a stage, and if you observe yourself carefully, ステージに立つことに慣れたとき、自分自身をよく観察することができたなら、

you might find yourself seeking to control the audience. It's probably the part of 聴衆をコントロールしようとしていることに気づくでしょう。それは、受け入れられないかもしれません。

you that you don't want to accept, but once you get rid of the stage flight, you may start でも、一度その高揚した状態から離れることができれば、

enjoying the opportunity to be listened to by a big crowd. And it would certainly meet 大勢の人に聞いてもらえるという機会を楽しむことができるでしょう。
