Knowing that the panda is now a step further from extinction is an exciting moment for

everyone committed to conserving the world's wildlife and their habitats.

Welcome to Animal Facts.

In a welcome piece of good news for the world's threatened wildlife, the giant panda, as of

September 2016, has been downgraded from 'Endangered' to 'Vulnerable' on the global list of

species at risk of extinction, demonstrating how an integrated approach can help save Earth's

vanishing biodiversity.

Today, we discuss this great news.

Let's get started.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced the positive change

to the giant panda's official status in the Red List of Threatened Species, pointing

to a 17% rise in the population in the decade up to 2014, when a nationwide census found

1,864 giant pandas in the wild in China.

WWF's panda logo was designed by the organisation's founding chairman, the naturalist and painter

Sir Peter Scott in 1961.

Twenty years later, World Wildlife Fund became the first international organisation to work

in China.

Ever since, WWF has been working with the government on initiatives to save giant pandas

and their habitat, including helping to establish an integrated network of giant panda reserves

and wildlife corridors to connect isolated panda populations.

There are about 20 different species of bamboo that pandas will eat.

However bamboo is so nutritionally poor that the pandas have to consume up to 45 pounds

each day, which can take up to 16 hours.

The Chinese once hunted Panda believing that its pelt provided magical protection against

evil spirits.

Today, thanks to conservation efforts, hunting Panda carries strict penalties in China.

The main cause of the panda's decline is the erosion of its habitat, due to the clearing

of areas for crop cultivation.

Another reason is the natural die-back of the local variety of bamboo.

The panda will not migrate to feed in new areas, because it is hemmed in by human settlements,

and so it frequently starves to death.

Giant pandas are only about the size of a stick of butter at birth, and they're hairless

and helpless.

The panda mother gives great care to her tiny cub, usually cradling it in one paw and holding

it close to her chest.

For several days after birth, the mother does not leave the den, not even to eat or drink!

Are Pandas Bears?

There was some confusion about this for a while.

Scientists put living things in groups to help us organize what we know about the millions

of species on Earth.

Not everything fits neatly into the groups scientists have created.

For a long time, scientists weren't sure if giant pandas were bears or perhaps more

closely related to raccoons.

Now we know that giant pandas are indeed members of the bear family.

Scientists have used DNA to find out that the giant panda is more closely related to

the other bears than to the raccoons.

Giant pandas are in the family Ursidae with the seven other bear species.

Panda's pooh points in their direction of travel, so they can be easily tracked in the

wild.

Unfortunately, historically this led to them being more endangered, but now it aids researchers.

Fossils of pandas were found that were between 1 and 2 million years old.

Pandas were once widely distributed across the whole of China.

Now they only live in the wild in remote areas of China's Tibetan foothills.

It's not all good news.

While the panda's status has improved, other species are under increasing threat, including

the Eastern gorilla that is now listed as critically endangered, just one step away

from extinction, due primarily to poaching.

Well, there you have it.

Some great news for one of the most widely recognizable and iconic species to grace this

planet.

And for this, we are truly grateful and hopeful for future efforts.

Wrangler Front Rollbar Paracord Grab Handles with D-rings - Black (2007-2016 JK) Review & Install - Duration: 5:08.

Hi, I'm Dave for extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation video for our

set of front seat...we do have rear seat available.

Grab handles made out of paracord for 2007 to 2016 JKs and the D-rings are also included.

I give these a one out of three wrenches on our insulation rating guide because they are

not even really an installation.

It's going to be a simple application.

You're going to be able to pop them on in about five minutes or so, and in fact, we'll

show you how to make that happen coming up in just a minute.

Let's face it, most passenger cars actually have built in grab handles.

Wranglers don't come with those installed, so usually an aftermarket solution is what

we're looking for.

And this is certainly a good one because not only are they very easy to pop onto the roll

bar but they're made out of paracord.

And I like that, not only for the look or the aesthetics which is something that I value

on my Wrangler but also just in case that you are ever in any sort of an emergency situation,

you know that paracord is used in survival kits, people make bracelets out of them in

case you ever needed a length of rope to make a lean-to, a tent, or something along those

lines.

It's an emergency application that is built in, but if you ever had to use it, you're

not gonna have your grab handles anymore.

So keep that in mind.

These are certainly grab handles that are meant to give you a place to hang onto to

get in and out of your Wrangler, but it does have the very slight added bonus of being

made out of paracord in case you ever find yourself in a situation that you might need

it.

Like I mentioned, this is made out of paracord, and in fact, it's one of the most durable

and popular rankings of paracord because it does fall into that 550 test.

So this is going to be strong enough to help you to build a tent if necessary if you ever

needed to take these grab handles apart or to be able to hang food from a tree.

Now, again, I'm just mentioning that because it is a nice thing to maybe have on hand inside

of your Wrangler but mostly, that paracord is going to give you some good durability,

some flexibility, and a nice, strong place to either hang your hand when you're off-roading

or to be able to help yourself when you need to get into a rig whether it's vertically

challenged, or you've made yourself vertically challenged, by jacking up your rig so high.

These handles, again, I want to remind you, are available for the front seat, so a pair,

or you can get a set of four.

So the installation on these grab handles could not be any easier.

You're basically going to take them.

You see the loops that are right here, and you're going to undo the included D-link,

and then you put one loop on, put the link right back into the ring.

Then, you do the exact same thing on the other side, position it where you want it to go.

You will find that this fits the roll bar nice and snug but not so snug that you can't

customize it to your own placement choice.

The fact that these go on in less than five minutes is one of the reasons I gave it a

one out of three wrenches on our difficulty to install meter and it will take you less

than five minutes to apply these.

If you've been shopping around for a solution to basically have a little more comfort when

off-roading...so you've been looking for grab handles, you've probably seen a lot of choices

out there in a lot of different materials.

So one of the things that I like about this particular pair is the fact that they are

made out of that paracord that we've talked so much about in this video.

I think it looks cool, and I love the fact that I've got a little bit of an emergency

paracord handy if I ever needed it.

You will find some grab handles that are out there that are gonna be less money and then

you're gonna find some that are a lot more expensive.

It's really gonna be up to you to decide what kind of look and what kind of functionality

that you would like to have.

Let's face it, a grab handle is gonna work the same for virtually anybody who's grabbing

a hold of it.

It probably gets down more to the fact of look, what you prefer, and if you like the

idea of having these made out of paracord just to have that safety feature built in

if you ever needed it.

So if you've been looking for a solution to getting in and out of your Wrangler for whatever

reason, or when you're off-roading just to be able to have a place that's more comfortable

to hang on to, because, let's face it.

You hit some holes, you're going over some boulders, it's nice to be able to have an

extra hand especially if you're a passenger.

This is going to be a nice solution and could be the right one for you.
