3 Reasons Being Called Exotic is NOT a Compliment | Decoded - Duration: 4:54.
- Let's talk about sex baby.
Ooh sorry, I meant (clears throat)
Let's talk about the way society sexualizes women of color
by threatening them as exotic,
and why that is overall a bad thing.
Sexy.
(pop music)
We've all heard of women of color with striking features,
whether it's their hair, bodies, eye shape, or skin tone
described as exotic.
But what does it really mean?
Well, exotic means introduced from another country,
or, strikingly, excitingly or mysteriously different
or unusual.
And if you're using the term scientifically, great.
Plants can be exotic.
Birds can be exotic.
The lamp that my husband decided is out of our budget,
is exotic.
But there is one time you should probably hold off
using the word, when you're describing people.
That's just a little pro tip from a lady
who's been called exotic
by some really well meaning people
a few times more than she would like.
My preference would be zero.
So here are three reasons why being called exotic
isn't really a compliment.
Number one, exotic literally means foreign.
Exotic comes from the Latin exoticus, which meant
belonging to another country,
and a lot of times that's just wrong.
I mean I've been called exotic right here
in the United States, and I grew up in Florida.
Which to be fair, Florida is a very different place,
but it's not a different country.
In reality, exotic is kind of a way of saying,
"You don't look like you're from around these parts."
And when you say it,
you're really saying, "You're different."
Which brings me to number two,
exotic is based on white beauty standards.
The second part of the definition of exotic is
strikingly, excitingly, or mysteriously
different or unusual.
Whether it's the way people talk
about Asian women's almond eyes,
the fetishization of black women's butts,
or the fascination with racial ambiguity
of mixed-race women.
The features which get people labeled as exotic
are almost always in comparison to white ones.
Her chocolately complexion, her rich caramel lips,
the rich olive color of her almond-shaped eyes.
You ever notice how descriptions of women of color
sometimes sound like they belong in a book of recipes?
The common thread here is that women of color
from various racial backgrounds are often considered exotic
because they don't fit into what our culture sees as
traditional beauty standards, white and European.
And if you don't think that's true,
have you ever heard anyone
call Blake Lively or Taylor Swift exotic?
Me neither.
But even though we think of having blonde hair
and blue eyes as some sort of all American look,
only 17 percent of Americans have blue eyes,
and only five percent are natural blondes.
So that combo is actually, very exotic.
Number three, being fetishized is not a compliment.
And while many people believe saying things like:
"I have yellow fever 'cause Asian girls are so hot",
or that indigenous women are all
sexy Native American Disney princess Halloween costumes,
or, "Latinas are just so sensual"
or, "I love black girls because they have more booty"
are compliments.
Even positive stereotypes are a form of fetishization
because they reduce an entire group of women to one thing,
and ignore their nuance and individuality.
And let me be clear, yes, white women
like all groups of women
are fetishized, objectified, and sexualized
in problematic ways.
But when you exotify and fetishize women of color,
for things like skin tone, hair texture, eye shape,
or our bodies, you're objectifying us in ways
that are especially gross because it often plays
on perceived racial stereotypes
that exist to oppress us in so many other ways.
Like the fact that Native American women
are victims of rape and sexual assault
at a rate that is three point five times higher
than that of any race in the United States,
with 70 percent of the perpetrators being non-native.
Or, that 77 percent of Latinas experience sexual harassment
in the work place.
Or, that 77 percent of the victims that report
an alleged sexual trafficking were people of color.
Or, that not all black women have booty's,
no matter how many squats I they do.
Yeah it's all very messed up.
And people across all racial backgrounds
contribute to perpetuating these stereotypes and attitudes,
both within their own communities, and towards women
outside of their communities.
There's nothing wrong with our differences.
They're a part of who we are.
But for many women of color, we're constantly being shamed
for being different and told we don't belong.
So even if, "You're so exotic" is meant as a compliment,
it can be hurtful because it's just another way
of keeping us feeling like we're on the outside.
And while not using the word exotic won't solve
any of society's bigger problems,
being more mindful of the way we speak to each other
is the first step in making sure everyone feels
like they belong.
Thanks for watching, we'll see you next time
right here on Decoded.

Kate Middleton royal baby SHOCK: Is Kate going to have another baby in 2019? - Duration: 2:45.
Kensington Palace refused to provide a comment to Express.co.uk, but added if Kate were pregnant an official statement would be released.
However, official statements regarding the royal pregnancies usually gets released around the 12-week mark.
And the recent rumours have put bookies odds in frenzy over Kate having a new bundle of joy in the coming year.
Is Kate going to have another baby in 2019? If Kate is going to have another baby in 2019 has not been confirmed - or denied - yet.
However, punters have been quick to place bets on Kate's pregnancy rumours.
Bookies odds are currently in frenzy, with the chance of Kate announcing a fourth pregnancy in 2019 at 3/1. This is up from 7/2 last week.
Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Apati said: "It's looking increasingly likely Will and Kate will welcome another family member in the near future." The claims comes just eight months after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed Prince Louis in April 2018.
And baby fever is currently running high in the royal household.
With Kate's brother-in-law Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announcing they are expecting their first child together in the spring of 2019, the Cambridges may be feeling broody again.
Bookies Coral also released odds over a sudden announcement from the future King and Queen of England as the odds now shows the chance of Kate being pregnant at 3/1 and 10/1 a pregnancy would be announced before the end of 2018.
Coral's Harry Aitkenhead said: "Our odds show that there's every chance that Kate and Wills might add to their growing family, and a fourth baby is certainly a possibility.
"We've taken some bets over the last two weeks or so on it happening and there's a real buzz around the Royal family at the moment with Meghan expecting." The figures also show 6/4 for Kate to have a fourth baby at any point in the future.
However, during Kate's previous pregnancies, she suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum - severe vomiting in pregnancy.
Kate experienced severe nausea, vomiting and dehydration, something which may put her off having a fourth child.
So whether the royal power couple want to follow in Queen Elizabeth II's footstep by having four children is yet to be revealed.

SailAway 45 | Something's Floating! Is it VALUABLE?! Is it HUMAN?! | Sailboat Living Sailing Vlog - Duration: 12:07.
this week on sale away we say goodbye to the Bahamas and head out across the Gulf
Stream to the east coast of Florida once again do you wanna sail away I wanna say
where do you wanna say
with me last week we woke up to a stormy birthday for me and I proceeded to try
to cut my own toe off my toe went right in a hole in the toe REO why they call
terrorism but we had a beautiful transit to West End Grand Bahama
we're leaving West End after
rough night of anchoring the Anchorage outside of Bahama Bay Marina looked like
it was gonna be smooth look nice really our only option because fitness day at
the marina but there was current flowing out of the Anchorage off the shelf into
the Gulf Stream and back
and really like win so we wound up like turning sideways the very mild role
coming off the Atlantic was hitting us and making us just pitch around like
crazy it was the most uncomfortable that green with the entire trip that maybe
ever so we did not get a whole lot of sleep
the vote did finally turn into the win and that put the stern to the waves so
we
well I got a few hours sleep and we had to get going early this morning so that
we can make it to st. Lucie Inlet well before dark we don't wanna go in that
one at night because we don't know it well on it it's a little shallow but it
works
it's kind of how we
we are well underway on our crossing back to Stuart
so far it's going very very well like we've all kind of gotten over our
initial grumpiness we're all doing well now we're a solid third of the way
across
over there Winston you can see the curvature of our track there as the
gulfstream starts to kick in pushes north toward Stuart
we should have no problem tracking up to Stuart I don't leave
beautiful out here real gentle rolling waves not much wind
motor at all Salo help max left will probably be back
and the Stewart area need to send any of the channel probably by about 6 p.m. or
something like that at the latest
hopefully safe and sound in our dock by about 7:00 right now it's just deep blue
beautiful water
very smooth
I realized we never gave you a medical update on my toe still
hang on there up look
it hurts if I touch it and it tingles sometimes so I think I probably severed
some nerves or something I've been trying to keep it elevated and
take ibuprofen to make sure no swelling comes up use some antibiotic ointment on
it it's not it doesn't feel too bad once we get to shore take the bandage off and
see what it looks like and then decide whether to
seek medical advice or just let it go I sure as hell don't care
about the scar on my tongue but long as it heals up with no infection or
anything I'm good I think it'll be fine
so just a little update we are at least two-thirds of the way for the whole trip
back I just wanted to show you the golf thing we're kind of out in the middle of
it right now a little more toward the u.s. than we
are almost but this is a benign day there's no wind there's been nothing and
there wasn't any other kind of wind in the days leading up to this that was at
first and yet out here in the middle of stream you can see what we got sets of
waves that are
with no sales up there rocking us all over the place and everyone thought
we'll get a couple of Pickers relatively speaking like five six people
and this is with you know adverse
we play this game at least once a trip where there's something floating in the
water and we have to
mostly I think it's a dead body because I listen to to be true crime podcast
it's a box of something extremely valuable but in this case okay
last time it was a box mr. box yeah at least this time we get some trash out of
you yeah thank you
fifteen minutes away and it's gonna rain you got pants back on oh you put your
hands back on sale product you want to reach the st. Lucie Inlet here's what it
says on the chart st. Lucie Inlet caution channel boys are not charted
because of the constant shifting of the channel passing through the inlet is not
recommended without local knowledge of all hazardous conditions affecting this
area we've never done it but doesn't count
yeah our friends who are locals know in and out at all the time and they do joke
that it's kind of shallow and having bumps here and there once or twice
occasionally
we may be going in the inlet in a thunderstorm
any concerns we had about the st. Lucie Inlet turned out to be much ado about
nothing it was plenty deep and really easy to navigate plus we had really good
weather to do it too soon we found ourselves back at our temporary home in
Stuart and already plotting our next destination as always thanks for
watching please give us a like and don't forget to subscribe if you haven't and
ring a little bell right next to the button so you get notifications of our

"Hell" is a Big, Fat LIE! - Duration: 14:17.
Now it's time for news and comment. First the news. Hello again and welcome
to Christianity news flash where we investigate the scriptures and compare
our findings with the beliefs and practices of traditional and/or
mainstream Christianity all for the purposes really of separating biblical
fact from Christian fantasy this just in according to the Hebrew Scriptures what
we commonly refer to as the Bible hell is a big fat dirty lie hell does not
exist there is no hell for centuries churchianity I'm sorry
I mean Christianity has taught the fear mongering doctrine of Hell an imaginary
place of unending fiery torment for those who reject the one true God or
simply don't believe in the one true God or worse yet have never heard of the one
true God but they didn't accept him thus they are doomed to this unfortunate
fiery fate well never mind that this concept was unheard of in the Old
Testament never spoken of by the prophets nevermind that this idea was
adopted from Greek culture and introduced post 80 70 why well to
manipulate the masses into fearful obedience or else never mind all these
things let's just go on the leading in hell because it seems to be the general
consensus of those whom we assume know their Bibles or consider this the most
common word for Hell in our New Testament Bibles is the Greek word
Gehenna the equivalent of the Hebrew gaben
Hinnom which is simply the valley of hinnom
kaida just outside Jerusalem Jesus referenced or he used this exact place
to warn of the local judgment on unrepentant first century Jews why
because it was this exact place the Valley of Hinnom or hell that would
serve as the final destination of many in Jerusalem in truth to this day the
Valley of Hinnom really is a lush Valley outside the walls of Jerusalem and is a
tourist attraction to this day so every time every time Jesus used the word hell
or Gehenna he associated it or he applied it specifically to that location
and to the Jews the truth is Gehenna was actually a huge
garbage dump outside first century Jerusalem in the Valley of Hinnom it
burned almost constantly some records say twenty four-hours-a-day and was
where all things that were useless or unclean or even despised were thrown out
or thrown into it was also a place where the outcasts gather such as leopards
where they scavenged a food and clothing amid the the rotten garbage full of
worms and maggots centuries before that it was a graveyard and it was even a
place catch this where Israel had sacrificed children to pagan gods
Jeremiah 730 and 31 for the children of Judah have done evil in my sight says
the Lord they have set their abominations in the house which is
called by my name to pollute it and they have built the high places of Tophet
which is the valley of the son of Hinnom there's your gaben Hinnom to burn their
sons and their daughters in the fire which i did not command nor did it come
to my heart this really takes God off so what do you think resulted well
fiery judgment in that very same Valley of Hinnom via the Babylonian army
Jeremih 732 therefore the days are coming says the Lord when it will no
more be called Tophet or the valley of the son of Hinnom but the valley of
slaughter for they will bury in top it until there is no room now listen to
this he says in 33 the corpses of this people will be food for the birds of
heaven and for the beasts of the earth and no one will frighten them away
now that really paints a picture of all these dead bodies basically piling up in
the Valley of Hinnom doesn't it well that sounds an awful like like they
picture that Jesus painted in Matthew 24 Luke 17 Luke 21 mark 13 describing the
final judgment upon Jerusalem when the Son of Man would come some would be
taking a judgment some would not some would escape just like Jeremiah
described a picture of dead corpses in the Valley of Hinnom near to his day so
to Jesus in his day and his audience would have recognized the language
Matthew 24:27 for as lightning comes from the east and
flashes to the west so will be the coming of the Son of Man listen to this
for wherever the carcass is there the Eagles or the vultures will be gathered
together paints that same picture now doesn't it so by the time the first
century rolled around the valley was basically a burning garbage dump
this was Gehenna this was hell this was where Jesus warned many of them would
end up in hell in the soon or coming impending judgment so what does this
mean well biblically defined hell was simply the end of the Old Covenant
system it was the final destination of that covenant and of those who clung to
it during the first century rather than cling to Christ or grab to Christ who
enter the ark of Christ flee to the mountains and escape the the
flood of judgement that was about to come on that generation the judgement
was upon Israel and that resulted in the hell fires of Gehenna that's it and at
this point you might ask what about all the descriptions of Hell being eternal
in everlasting and forever and all that well actually there are many Old
Testament examples of local judgments on nations describe just this way a
perpetual burning of fire or lichen in Revelation where the smoke rises forever
isaiah 34:8 through 10 comes to mind for it is the day of the Lord's vengeance
the year of recompense for the cause of Zion it streams shall be turned into
pitch and it's dust into brimstone its land shall become burning pitch it shall
be it shall not be quenched day or night its smoke shall ascend forever from
generation to generation it shall not wait or shall I waste no one shall pass
through it forever and ever see we have to understand these were simply very
descriptive Hebraic metaphor for local judgments judgments by fire judgments by
burning and smoke you might recall John the Baptist
entering the scene and warning of a soon coming judgment by fire all the Old
Testament examples really serve as shadows typological shadows of the final
age ending fire judgment that would fall upon Jerusalem in 70 AD so when the New
Testament spoke of the end there covenant world in terms of
Hellfire unquenchable fire lake of fire everlasting punishment where the worm
never dies the smoke of their torment sigh think it is and so on we mustn't
think think in terms of a literal eternal ongoing never-ending torment
that's more aligned with our Western minded literalistic thinking no no no no
we have to try to understand how the original audience would have understood
these things the Jews were very familiar with this kind of language because it
was the language of their prophets they got it
it was perfectly natural to them they didn't need lessons in in Hebraic
apocalyptic language because they spoke it they read it they lived it so they
got it there was no doubt they understood this language no other way
than in relation to national judgment so we need to think contextually allowing
the ancient Hebraic expressions to paint the pictures they intended to paint and
the notions they intended to convey without adding our old ideas into the
text and admittedly this is extremely difficult to do concerning most of us
have been indoctrinated from birth into the concept of a literal conscious
torment into fiery flames of an eternal hell and when that concept of Hell is
molded and pounded and saturated into our psyches man it can be difficult to
even consider another paradigm as history records Rome surrounded
Jerusalem starting around 67 ad and finally besieged it in 70 AD literally
hundreds of thousands of Jewish corpses ended up exact
Klee where Jesus said they would in that very same Gehenna that very same Valley
of Hinnom in the burning fires of Gehenna the lake of fire burning smoking
stinking rotting corpses of those who did not escape the wrath about to come
that John and Jesus and His disciples warned them about Jesus promised
hell and many of them ended up just there I'll say it one more time
hell was simply the final fate the final destination of the Mosaic Covenant and
those who remained in it to the end in that end came in 70 80
you know I think honestly with just a little bit of investigation a little bit
of thinking for ourselves in a whole lot of honesty I think you two just might
come to the what I would consider the biblical and the inevitable conclusion
hell as we have been taught it doesn't exist hell as we've been taught is a big
fat no-good dirty lie and that's the truth Ruth I'd say that's good news is
what I'd say hey I've got an idea why don't you go ask the one person you
can trust the one person who knows everything about the Bible the one
person who has all the answers because he or she is paid to have the answers
you know that is your pastor go ask him or her ask your pastor and I'm being a
little bit sarcastic here ask him or her to provide scriptures that demonstrate
or prove that you know a place of eternal conscious torment ask them to do
that now if they can do that I guarantee you I guarantee you I will show you or I
can show you how those exact verses that they cite are in fact contextually
connected to nothing more and I mean nothing more than the coming judgement
on Jerusalem and the hell fires of Gehenna just outside Jerusalem boats
hell is a big fat lie
that's it for now we'll see you next newsflash
this has been news and covet

This is how it's done, lads - Emery shows off skills in training - Duration: 2:47.
Unai Emery was in the thick of Arsenal's training session on Friday, showing off his own skills at their Colney base
With a whistle in his mouth, the Spaniard exhibited his long-range passing and seemed to relish leading a number of drills
Wearing his full Arsenal tracksuit with gloves and a scarf, evidently Emery felt like warming himself up even more
The 47-year-old spent his modest playing career as a midfielder predominantly in Spain's second division
But he wasn't afraid to dust off the boots on a chilly Friday afternoon. The energetic Arsenal boss was also pictured having some one-on-one time with Mesut Ozil
The German has been out of favour in recent weeks having returned from a back injury
He was also dropped to the bench for recent trips to Bournemouth and Southampton and entirely left out of the matchday squad for the Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat by Tottenham
Emery was seen instructing the playmaker and the 30-year-old appeared to be receptive
The former PSG manager earlier admitted that Ozil has been disappointed at having to settle for a place among the substitutes but he is confident the midfielder will fight to regain his spot
He said: 'I want every player with a good mentality to help us and give us their characteristics and quality
We need Mesut Ozil. 'Every player wants to play and be okay to help the team when we need
The frustration is the same for everybody when they didn't play in a match. 'But I spoke with him and with the regularity in the season, I am telling him what we need from him and he has the commitment to help us and the quality and the characteristics to help us when the team needs his moments in the pitch in one game
Tomorrow he is in the 18 players, in the squad.'The north London club take on Burnley at the Emirates in Saturday's early kick-off and are favourites to come away with three points

Arsenal injury news: Who is UNAVAILABLE for Unai Emery for Arsenal vs Burnley? - Duration: 2:49.
Arsenal manager Unai Emery says playmaker Mesut Ozil is needed by the club and would be part of their squad to play Burnley
Ozil, who joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then-record £42million, has been left out of the side regularly in the last two months, at first due to a back sprain and then - according to Emery - because of the physicality of some opponents
The 30-year-old was not in the squad for the 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham in midweek when Emery repeatedly refused to say that he wanted to hold on to the German ace when questioned about his future
However, the Spanish coach was more positive about Ozil in his press conference today with fifth-placed Arsenal looking to rebound from the Spurs loss and a 3-2 defeat to struggling Southampton in the league last weekend
"I want every player with a good mentality to help us and give us their characteristics and quality
We need Mesut Ozil," Emery said. "Every player wants to play and be okay to help the team when we need
The frustration is the same for everybody when they didn't play in a match. This Christmas tree photo is baffling people - but it's hard to spot why - News Live - Duration: 1:39.
Social media is filled with festive photos at the moment as people proudly show off their beautifully decorated Christmas trees
While some make sure each one of their colour coordinated ornaments is in the perfect place, others go completely free-style and go for an organised-chaos approach
Alli McDonald, from St Louis, Missouri, had a surprising new addition to their Christmas tree this year, and while it's very cute it's probably not going to end well
But it's not that easy to spot, so she shared the photo on social media and challenged people to try and spot it
Can you see it? It turns out Alli's cat, like most of our furry friends, has taken a particular like to their Christmas tree and likes climbing it and hiding in the branches
Posting the first of a series of photos, she said: "Alright guys let's play a game: every morning we find my cat in a different place in our Christmas tree and take a picture
"Screenshot when you find him." Still not sure? Don't worry you're not the only one and lots of people have been left scratching their heads
We'll give you a clue. Look towards the top of the tree on the left hand side. Alli's tweet has been liked more than 2,800 times

Svetlana Laurel, 52, of Kent, Washington has been arrested and charged in the death of 14-uear-old Natalie Gulizia. Natalie called 911 on Tuesday night to report a domestic dispute between her mother and father as the pair fought downstairs.
But as she was on the phone to the emergency services, her life was cut short by allegedly by her mother who shot her in the head in a moment of madness.
The divorced mom-of-two Svetlana who works at Boeing, was apparently let into the home of her ex-husband's on Tuesday night by the couple's 12-year-old son.
When her ex-husband and daughter Natalie returned home, he allegedly found 'Svetlana was holding a Taser, and used it' on him. She is then alleged to have zip-tied her ex and their son.
'Svetlana drew a pistol' and told her ex-husband' she was going to shoot him because he had ruined her life', court documents seen by KIRO allege.
The mother had recently recently lost custody of her children to the father, according to officials and the situation had placed her into a seemingly desperate situation. The couple's daughter went into her upstairs bedroom and called police to get help.
'When the mother found out she was calling 911, she shot her,' Cmdr. David Leibman of the Renton Police Department said.
The 911 operator could hear a woman saying, 'You called 911!' and then heard a woman threatening to 'blow your head off'. There followed the sound of zip-ties being secured, a loud bang, followed by screaming, according to the police report.
The 12-year-old boy, who was tied up, 'hopped' to his sister's room 'and saw that his sisters head was covered in blood,' according to court papers.
The children's father told police 'he heard the sound of a single gunshot' upstairs and Laurel went back up to the first floor of the house and tried to shoot him.
'The gun failed to fire, with Svetlana struggling to clear the malfunction in the pistol,' court papers detail. The father then 'rammed Svetlana into the wall with his shoulder, and was able to grab the pistol.
