Just like the rest of Western Australia,
saving water is our top priority.
Here at Cannington Leisureplex
we have great water-saving ideas, such as:
timed showers, innovative pool filters,
grey water recycling,
and warnings (buzz) on excessive water use.
This and more has resulted in:
We are also cutting down on fertilizer
to help our beautiful river.
Oh, talking about the river,
we also have Canning River Eco Education Centre,
which we local call
- [Children] CREEC.
- CREEC is about raising awareness and positive action
for the health of our waterway and our natural environment.

- It's easy to see why people love Mandurah,
and why so many people call this place home.
But with a changing climate, we've gotta do
whatever we can to save water.

Residents have made these stencils
as a reminder to combat storm water pollution.
At Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre,
we're using innovative water loggers
to monitor water use in real time,
making it easy than ever to detect leaks.
- Found one!.
- And at this public open space north of Mandurah,
we're using recycled water from a local treatment facility,
allowing this previously unusable space
to be irrigated and enjoyed,
saving more than 88,000 kilolitres
from other sources every year.
That's 10 out of 10, I reckon.

This is the Mabel Talbot Reserve.
People walk their dogs here,
have barbies here, play kick-to-kick here,
and they even get married here.
There's another reason why this place is so special.
It's all about less grass, more mulch,
and literally thousands more native plants.
- We all know how important it is to save water at home,
and that's why at the City of Subiaco,
it's vital for Council to do the right thing too.
So after extensive community consultation,
we removed around a third of the turf from the park,
replaced it with waterwise mulch under trees,
and over 7,000 native plants, including 80 different species.
- [Man And Woman] We planted some.
- [Men] And we planted some.
- [Children] And we did too.
- The result, big savings in carbon emissions,
less fertilizer use, a larger tree canopy for the community,
and an impressive 15% reduction
in the Council's Scheme Water.
Good work City of Subiaco, very good work indeed.

- Here in Mandurah, we're all doing
what we can to save water.
Some of our schools are using recycled water
on their playing fields, helping to save
more than 88,000 kilolitres of water from other sources.

- This is Bayswater Waves.
At first sight, it looks like
the use of a whole lot of water.
Delve a little deeper, and you'll see
the City of Bayswater is dedicated to saving water.
We use pool blankets to prevent
water evaporation by up to 50%.
And there's a reason we're known as the Garden City.
Bayswater's home to over 190 parks, ovals, and green spaces.
With our changing climate, conserving the water we have
in all our public facilities is critical.
- Our council has a centralized irrigation system
that controls our water use, keeping our parks
and ovals healthy and green without wasting a drop.
- This system's clever.
It's weather responsive, so it shuts
itself down when the rains come.
We've also got a program that measures
the nutrients in the soil, that helps prevent
overfertilizing and overwatering.
- And if you think that's clever, check this out.
Five years ago, the only thing that thrived here
was a thick green algal bloom.
Now, Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary
is the home to a variety of wildlife,
including egrets, spoonbills, and cormorants.
The bore that used to feed it has now been turned off,
and stormwater drainage is now
the sustainable water source for this healthy wetland.
