hi everybody my name is Alexandra Napoli
and this is health coach TV the show to
watch if you want to learn to love
yourself as you slide into your skinny
jeans and today is ask the expert our
expert today is Amanda Rose Walsh she
is a personal trainer a boxing trainer a
boxing champion yoga instructor
prenatal yoga instructor like such a
long list but she's also a certified doula
and so that's what we're going to
be talking about today is all
about the world of doula so thank you
for being here *Amanda: thanks for having me so
so excited, hi everyone
*Alex: what exactly is a doula?
*Amanda: well a doula is a female who supports
another woman in labor and a big
misconception is that a doula is a
medical care provider like a midwife and
just to clarify a doula does nothing
medical it's not like an ob it's not
a midwife it is sort of like a mom coach
or a woman who mother's the mother and so
basically what that means is i attend
births whether they're in hospitals or
homes or birthing centers really
wherever and i support the mom
continuously until the birth of her baby
and then a few hours after and that
could be physically mentally emotionally
spiritually pretty much in any way that
she needs
so sort of like a mom coach a mom helper
and I'm really there to take care of her
to take care of her partner and like I said
nothing medical *Alex: so it's like you
said it's for the partner as well so
it's kind of like helping the parents
go though the whole process together
*Amanda: right, because birth could be crazy and intense
and overwhelming and sometimes partners
dad's they don't know what's going on
they're not really sure they have a hard
time seeing their women in pain or it's
a long time so a doula would also help
ease tension with with the mom and the
dad get the dad a break maybe he wants
coffee or to take a little nap maybe
something unexpected occurs and the
doula can educate the mom and the dad
about what's going on and give them some
options so it's basically just a team
player and it doesn't take the place of
a father it doesn't interfere with the
role of the partner he's still really
engaged really active it's just another
person to be there be present supportive
holding space and caring for them
*Alex: and someone who knows a lot about
the birthing process because a lot of
parents are new at this so
having somebody who's seen a lot of
births and who kind of knows the ins and
outs is a really good person to have on
hand to help you through the process
*Amanda: absolutely and that's another role of a
doula is to be a source of information
and resources so maybe something comes
up in and the moms not sure what decision to
make the doula although she can't give
her opinion could say here are the pros and
cons here are some things to consider
what do you want to do what is your
choice so we are very active in
education
*Alex: so let's talk about options because i think
another misconception about doulas is that
it's only for women you want to have a
very natural very like at home water birth
so what's the stance of the doula when it
comes to how you want to have your birth?
*Amanda: well doulas support all births in all
environments
it's not just for crunchy moms that want
to have a home birth doulas will support
c-section births or birthing centers it
really doesn't matter we are here
universally so maybe a woman wants to
give birth at home and she gets emergency
transferred the doula will go with
her maybe she has a scheduled c-section
and mom wants an extra support
person
the doula will go so it really is
regardless of the setting the location
as long as it's sort of talked about
agreed upon the doula knows what's up
it's all good *Alex: say I was a pregnant
woman like you are right now
*Amanda: four months! Bun in the oven *Alex: yay congratulations!! and
looking for a doula I get what are some
of the things that I should look out for
when i'm looking for a doula and then
what are some of the things that I can
expect from the process of working with
the doula so from when I first call you
to the actual birth and then moving
forward so you would definitely want to
make sure you have your dual is
certified which means that she went
through extensive training and a pretty
rigorous process to get to the point
where she can support women in
childbirth
however you can have a sister that's a
doula just someone there at the birth so
it sort of depends on what you're what
you're looking for her if I do love
somebody like that my party where I was
a little actually the word do lives just
like a support it actually means a woman
who serves right so know that if you're
if you're not using your sister your
best friend or your mom then you would
want a certified doula and every woman
feel differently
this but the level of experience varies
greatly
so you can have a doula that has five
births you can have a dual that has 500
birds usually the Duelist that have more
births are more expensive that doesn't
mean that the ones that are less
experienced don't know what they're
doing
maybe they haven't done it for so long
maybe they have other jobs so that's
really something for you to consider an
awful
helps on the price that definitely is
not unless are necessarily covered by
all insurance plans you can sometimes
use your flex spending for and it's
worth calling your insurance company and
asking definitely if you could get any
reimbursement around it right now but
yes definitely experience level tends to
dictate the price right so let's say you
want to sign up for a doula typically
how it works is we would first have an
initial call or consultation and we'll
make sure that we're a good match
you want to make sure that your doula
trust you trust your doula your you feel
comfortable know you even just like
getting hardware yeah you don't like
them what you're just feel having coffee
you have a good energy with that there's
some you have a connection and if you
don't feel that it's okay to talk about
it's okay to look elsewhere you want to
make sure that that first initial
connection is there right
so from there once you want to be okay
we're going to be partnered together
yeah then we have 12 to prenatal
meetings and usually am the monster hole
usually the departure of the father is
present and we talked about burning
preferences we talk about when
they want me to show up they want me to
meet them at home they want me to meet
him in the hospital
what kind of support do they want to
they want hands-on comfort techniques do
they want me to massage them rub their
hair up their head so really you're
getting the Preferences got a parent and
not only as my role but also one of the
Preferences around their birth right
they wanted epidural do they want to try
natural do they want to be a little more
grounded labor do they feel comfortable
having continuous fetal monitoring like
water all the preferences which we
usually organized and either into a
birth plan or some women like to call
for preferences intention which you need
to be flexible around my not go
according to the plan and then we'll
practice maybe some comfort techniques
and hands-on massage i'll teach the dad
from some ways and then some women feel
comfortable with just one prenatal
meeting some like a second and then when
your labor go time usually the mom
notifies me and birth takes a long time
so it's not usually like an immediate
right it's not like you see on TV where
you're like oh my god I'm having a baby
at times sometimes I've been to birds
words like oh my god I have to go right
now right
you know I've no time to adjust but
typically you have some time to prepare
I packed my bag and then meet them where
they want me to meet them and sometimes
that doesn't go for you to play we plan
to meet at home to leave her at home
before going to the hospital
doesn't go according to plan I think
them at the hospital and then I will
stay until two to three hours after the
baby's born
so whether that is five hours 15 hours
i've been to birds that are over 30
hours on there and present and alert and
holding space and that's something to
consider too
not many duels do this but get birth is
a long time you might want to say ask
there's extra fees if there's any extra
writings but typically that's not the
case i would hope not
yeah because I got a baby and yeah we're
going to get overtime and then so I say
about two to three hours after the
baby's born
if the mom wants to nurse help
facilitate breastfeeding maybe I stay
with the mom so the back to get a bite
to eat more phone calls if the baby
needs to be taken for any reason usually
the dad will go with a baby I'll stay
with the mom some circumstances they'll
set me when the baby so the doctors save
the mom and then I do a postnatal
follow-up meeting that's usually about
one to two weeks after kind of flexible
around that when the mom is ready and
during that meeting to talk about the
birth we digest that we process it was
what went well what didn't go well how
to do feel you were cared for how was
your experience and part of our role is
to frame the birth in a positive light
so even if it didn't go according to
plan even if it was not with them
unexpected
well we're the good aspects what can we
learn
just to help her like process because
the earth is probably the most
life-altering intense raw primal
experience and it's helpful to have
another female who is there to process
it with I think that's really awesome
because often I've never gone through
the experience that you're talking with
friends who have they have all these
kind of mixed emotions about the actual
birth process and they wanted it to go
one way and then it one another and then
they just they don't know how to deal
with the emotional absolutely you know
when I started sleeping right there
hormones are all over the place and then
everybody just comes over it's like oh
maybe so adorable and then you don't get
and then back to the original point of
really in essence of duel is there to
care for the mother right we're not
necessarily there to take care of the
baby because so much of it is baby focus
right I'm so really even that postpartum
meeting is really just check in with the
mom
yeah and just as a side note so I'm a
berth doula and then there's such a
thing as a postpartum doula so part of
Google's don't usually ten Birds unless
you're both you're both of a birthday
party and a postpartum doula will come
over and cook you food in your house
helping with the baby hold your baby
show you how to be your baby take a nap
let you take that we had minor household
to wear so that's another way do less
support women just a different face once
once baby has come close yeah what do
looking really helped you before during
and after
yeah the birthing process is something I
forgot to mention once a client signs on
its ok I'm going to be her doula we text
message a lot i send them emails
it's very like constant contact our
check out what's going on how are you
feeling any time they have a question or
like a post doctor's visit
so it's just like it's always having a
good support a good friend is there and
very knowledgeable and very average
following on ya gotta text back you can
email me like oh my gosh what's the clad
layer for this is what this is what's
going on what he watched I do and then
able to give some options are some
resources or websites or you know
someone wants a prenatal massage i have
references write a prenatal chiropractor
sure whatever list of exactly poor
mother through the hole and then you
know the aches and pains and the waiting
for baby can be very tough when you know
you're past your due date or your right
around your duty when is the baby coming
just have someone to reach out to an
event or share your frustration or
someone that yes i understand you know
when to reassure the baby is coming and
it's going to happen and just a matter
of time it's really a it's not just a
birthing experience like you said the
relationship it's a relationship
yeah good so what happened say for
example i'm ready to go into labor and
you my doula alright another berth
you're out of the country like whatever
like you're not able to be there at one
well I'm really glad to bring up that
point because something to really
consider when you hire a doula is to
make sure she has a backup and ethically
speaking she should really take you on
as a client if she's not going to be in
the country where I know she has many
births at that time so you just want to
be clear that when is your due date or
around your due date
she's available but even regardless of
that all duelists should secure backup
because for example what if I break my
leg or what if i have an ammonia or what
if there's some reason that I literally
cannot attend your bird right for some
delicious because they had another birth
or they've had a birth and they need to
rest so usually in that circumstance the
backup doula will come and a great thing
to do is to meet or talk to or
communicate with the backup doula and
that could be your preference for be an
email can be a phone call but just to
build some sort of you know rapport
initial line of communication contact to
make sure you feel comfortable because
in the event that happens you want to
know this person on some level and then
add the first doula it's my
responsibility to inform the backup
doula
the months preferences and expectations
and for plants and preferences and make
sure they have the contact information
and and everything she would need just
in case right so I try to practice that
with every birth even if I'm totally
confident that i'll be there that i have
a backup in place in the event of an
emergency that I'm just you know it's
unforeseen right but I tried my best
because I worked hard to cultivate a
relationship with the mom and the dad
and be be a part of their birth team I
want to be there so is there anything
else the expectant mothers should know
before kind of entering into this whole
process I really feel that dual should
be available to everyone that it
actually should just be a standard of
care that even if you cannot afford it
Julie should be made available because
having a dual present your birth has
shown to decrease interventions decrease
the need for c-sections and increase the
overall positive experience of the
birthing situation so I feel like it's
an invaluable tool it's a day where a
little extra support goes such a long
way and you'll never get back into it
had that extra person there shouldn't
have
someone caring for me that day know
you'll you'll find a lot of ease and
peace knowing that there was someone
there just for you to do whatever you
need it's really the most of service
ever in my life
aside from being your personal trainer
yoga teacher to be of service to a woman
in labor is is the peak really so so and
don't think you can afford it there's
such a range especially for newer duel
is that are looking to build some miss
marion some of them do it for low-cost
no cost and then you have upwards of you
know very expensive duelist so it is
accessible you just need to do a little
research and like I said make sure you
feel good and there's a report and
highly highly recommend it and in fact
I've already secured my old dual up for
my birth in March I reached out to her I
knew right away who is going to be the
one of your backup
it was one of my backups but it was a
girl that I was in doula training wet
and I just knew instinctively like when
I have a baby this is my girl and
yeah yeah so that's how I feel about you
I'm like a dad who does what its gonna
yeah i might be my second kid by that
level
yeah it's amazing it's a really such a
deep honor to be there at you know the
pinnacle of a woman's life when she
literally births her family and she
becomes a mother it's it's always so
beautiful so intense and such an honor
and a privilege really well thank you so
much for being with ya think we've all
learned time about what a doula is what
we should be looking for when we're
trying to hire a doula just how they can
help with the whole experience I don't
really like everybody should have a
doula if you want more information
Amanda all her stuff over links are
going to be below so you can reach out
to her there and of course if you have
