U-M IHPI: We are Innovators...and Innovation Builds the Future - Duration: 5:43.
[ Music ]
>> Our nation's healthcare system is at a crossroads.
While issues like cost, access, quality and safety aren't new, the times we live in call
for us to reexamine healthcare from every angle.
There's never been more momentum to solve the most challenging health problems of our day.
And IHPI brings together the brightest scholars
and award-winning researchers to find those answers.
[ Music ]
>> Innovation is at the core of everything we do.
It has to be.
It takes creativity, imagination and vision to affect change in healthcare.
IHPI is a place where intellectual energy and passion for improving public health converge.
It's a vibrant home for health services researchers from multiple disciplines
to mind massive amounts of data, helping to tackle some of the toughest issues.
IHPI is making a vital contribution to the understanding of precision medicine,
expanding its scope beyond fundamental discoveries
of genes and new biological pathways.
Precision discovery, precision treatment and precision health are the three pillars
of research that are leading the way to help people navigate how
to treat cancer and other serious diseases.
Targeted treatments can maximize health benefits and reduce harmful effects,
especially for patients undergoing aggressive cancer treatments
like radiation, chemotherapy and surgery.
For example, a recent study by a team of IHPI members showed that 70% of women
who undergo double mastectomies for breast cancer based
on their genetic makeup don't actually need to have both breasts removed.
For the 235,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer annually in the U.S.,
research like this can help them make more informed
and appropriate decisions regarding their care.
In the United States, opioid overdoses kill nearly 30,000 people each year.
Studies done by IHPI researchers are helping clinicians reduce accidental overdoses
by changing their prescribing practices.
These studies are also influencing coalitions to more closely follow patients
on opioid painkillers to prevent addiction and suicide.
[ Music ]
With the nation's aging population, IHPI is taking on problems like dementia.
Every 67 seconds in the U.S., a new case of dementia is diagnosed.
And many of these patients are prescribed anti-psychotic drugs
to deal with their symptoms.
But IHPI researchers have concluded
that non-drug approaches actually work better and carry far fewer risks.
One of the most important issues facing healthcare today is patient safety.
Studies show that on any given day,
about 1 in 25 hospital patients acquires at least one infection.
In a unique collaboration between engineering, medicine, nursing and computer science,
IHPI researchers from the University of Michigan and the U.S. Department
of Veterans Affairs are focusing on saving lives
through the prevention of hospital-acquired infections.
They are also investigating how to make the administration of chemotherapy safer
for both patients and healthcare providers.
Projects like these benefit greatly from the work of health systems engineers
who develop tools and processes to improve quality,
safety and the overall patient experience.
[ Music ]
One of the most important roles IHPI plays
in the healthcare landscape is assessing disparities in care.
The institute has partnered with the State of Michigan to evaluate the Healthy Michigan Plan,
an expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.
IHPI researchers are studying how this new program affects the health of communities
and the lives of 600,000 Michigan residents who have not had good access to care in the past.
IHPI provides a physical and virtual venue for the exchange of ideas, a place where doctors,
nurses, economists, engineers, public health specialists, and those who are training
to enter those fields come together to transform their thoughts into action.
The result?
We're accelerating health reform, impacting the way healthcare is delivered,
raising quality and lowering costs.
And most importantly, we are improving lives because we are innovators.
And innovation builds the future.

Ask the Vet - Are round bales healthy for horses to eat? - Duration: 3:18.
SARAH: Are round bales healthy enough for horses to eat?
Do they provide enough minerals to help maintain a healthy diet
in horses?
DR LYDIA GRAY: Interesting that they went with minerals
specifically because that wouldn't be where I'd go.
So gosh I feel like I'm the negative Nellie here.
But I don't like salt blocks.
I don't like round bales.
What do I like?
SARAH: You like research?
DR LYDIA GRAY: I do.
Oh--
SARAH: Feral ponies.
DR LYDIA GRAY: --shoo thank god.
So--
SARAH: We like a lot of things.
DR LYDIA GRAY: --round bales, they have their place.
They're easy.
They're cheaper.
They're convenient.
So if you're not out there every day,
you can put a round bale down and the horses have food.
But to me, the risks outweigh the benefits
in that you don't know what each horse is getting.
And I've seen horses pushed off round bales,
not allowed their space in.
And it's typically the seniors.
SARAH: Which is wrong.
DR LYDIA GRAY: Which is wrong.
They're already losing weight and having problems.
And then they're getting bullied off the round bale.
So you have to make sure that there's space for everybody.
The hardest thing, though, is it takes a little bit of effort
to make the hay in a round bale remain quality.
Because if you sit a round bale out in the weather--
we wouldn't sit a square bale out in the rain
and leave it for days and weeks.
SARAH: Right.
DR LYDIA GRAY: But that's how many people feed round bales.
So if you want to keep a round bale,
they can start out with really high quality hay.
But--
SARAH: Because they're grown the same--
DR LYDIA GRAY: It's the same.
SARAH: --way as square bales.
DR LYDIA GRAY: Yeah, right.
SARAH: It's just how they're baled.
DR LYDIA GRAY: Right.
But if you don't set it up off the ground,
if you don't cover it, then it's going to get wet,
it's going to mold.
The other thing in some parts of the country, because of the way
it's wrapped, and air doesn't get
into the middle-- it gets into the outer edges-- if you're in
and area of the country has botulism, that's a risk.
So there are some risks to round bales.
They do make small hole hay nets that fit round bales
SARAH: Oh.
DR LYDIA GRAY: So it slows--
SARAH: So it's a--
DR LYDIA GRAY: --consumption.
SARAH: --very large small hole hay net.
DR LYDIA GRAY: Correct.
SARAH: OK.
DR LYDIA GRAY: Versus a very small large hole hay net.
SARAH: Which would be confusing.
DR LYDIA GRAY: Yeah.
So you can slow consumption down.
You can regulate it, make it more consistent.
You can reduce wastage.
Wastage is a big problem with the round bales
because they step on it, they'll defecate and urinate on it.
But it just is such inconsistent nutrition
as you penetrate further into the round bale.
And if it's left to the environment, exposed,
I can't tell who's eating what.
And the easy keepers tend to gorge themselves on it,
and the hard keepers are like, "No, I'm good."
So it works for some people, and it doesn't work for everyone.
It's not a recipe for set it out and leave your horses.
I think you still have to observe your horses closely,
hopefully every day.

Multimedia Impact Briefing for January 4th, 2017 - Duration: 2:17.
Good morning this is Mary Keiser with
you from the National Weather Service
office in Birmingham and we'll talk real
quick about the winter weather potential
for this Friday into Saturday morning.
Ok a few things to note will have a cold
front will move through Thursday night
and that will help reinforce the cold
airmass across Central Alabama and after
that we'll have a storm system that will
move across the state behind this front
and allow for precipitation starting
Friday and going along into Saturday.
Our impact time frame will be as early
as 9am on Friday and continue on through
his latest noon on Saturday. I know
that's a wide range but this is due to
various model uncertainties and
inconsistencies. Any accumulations would
likely be snow or sleet. Freezing rain
probability is low but again not 0.
Ok. Here's our impact graphic with our
potential winter weather impacts and
we're looking at an area for anywhere
north of Demopolis to Lafayette and north
of there at this time. The confidence in
winter weather occurring has increased
but again like I said on the other slide
we still have many uncertainties due to
these model inconsistencies on the
timing of initial onset and with the
earlier timing we could have colder
temperatures and then also with the
locations on on the precipitation as
well there's inconsistencies. So, we're
giving you this outlook right now and
note that these areas could change as we
refine our forecast as we get closer to
our weather on Friday. Any accumulation
would likely be in the form of snow or
sleet. Again the probability of freezing
rain is low,
it's not 0 but it is low our main threat
will be that of sleet or snow. So, please do
monitor the latest forecasts closely
as we get closer to the event. Find us on
on the web and on social media. Like us
on facebook. Follow us on twitter. If you
have any questions please do call our
office,
and thank you and have a good day.

New Life Chapter in a Townhouse for our Happy Client Megan - Duration: 0:58.
Hi my name is Megan and I recently bought a townhouse on the outside of Toronto
and I'm very happy with where I landed,
and my experience with the Julie Kinnear Team and my experience with Tyler also has been
fantastic.
I'm moving into new chapter in my life and I was living in a house for 22 years
in the middle of Toronto, and of course loved it, and found myself in a situation where I needed
to be on my own now, and needed to find a spot where my children could come and stay
when they needed to.
So I was very happy to find this place and it was a fantastic experience
and I'm looking forward to spending my first Christmas here.

1997-2017 F-150 Covercraft Pro Runner Tailgate Net (Excluding Flareside) Review & Install - Duration: 3:56.
Hey, guys, Alex from americanmuscle.com.
And today, I'm bringing you my quick review and breakdown of the Covercraft Pro Runner
Tailgate Net for the year 1997 through current F-150.
So in this video, I wanna talk about who this might appeal to, the construction and materials
used here, what you should expect to be spending.
And then we're gonna take a quick look at what's entailed to get this installed on your
truck, where right up front I'm gonna let you guys know, despite this being an easy
one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter, there's gonna be the slightest amount
of drilling here.
And either way you cut it, you're gonna be looking at a solid 15 minutes of work before
you get this onto your truck.
I'll have a little bit more for you on that later.
So the Pro Runner tailgate net that I have here today should definitely appeal to a couple
different types of truck owners out there.
First and foremost, I think this is gonna be really great for the guy that's trying
to give their truck a little bit more of an off-road pre-runner trophy truck type of feel
as this honestly looks like it belongs on a race truck.
So the other type of truck owner out there that I think this would appeal to is gonna
be the guy that's in their truck a lot doing some long hauls, no matter be it towing some
dirt bikes or some horses, no matter what have you.
But believe it or not, this is actually brought to market to help improve your fuel consumption.
As by ditching your tailgate, what you're essentially gonna be doing is reducing drag
as air is gonna come over the hood of your truck, over the cab, and then shoot out the
back, which, again, is going to help reduce that drag and save you some money at the pump.
Now, if you bought a truck, it probably wasn't gonna be for fuel savings here.
And you're probably using it for a little bit more of a utilitarian perspective, hauling
camping gear, tools, dirt bikes, what have you.
And at the end of the day, this is going to help your fuel consumption and reduce drag.
But I'll throw it out there that this is definitely see-through.
You're gonna have some holes here.
So if you're lugging some two-by-fours around or maybe some rakes, shovels, anything that
you think might get through here, it's gonna be a good idea to throw a piece of plywood
back in your bed.
Just to make sure that everything is gonna stay in the back of your truck where it belongs
and not on the road.
So taking a quick look at the materials here, guys.
We're gonna see that Covercraft is gonna have this manufactured out of a 22-ounce vinyl-like
material that is gonna be able to hold up over time in regards to anything that you're
gonna be putting your truck through.
As well as making sure that whatever you're gonna have in the back of your truck isn't
gonna break through here, unless it's gonna be something really on the narrow side that
could slide through here.
So in terms of the pricing here, you should expect to be shelling out just about 50 bucks
for this, which, in my opinions, if you're gonna be after that trophy truck or pre-runner
look, it's gonna be a perfect mod for you.
Not only that, it's gonna give you that racer look.
But it's also going to help reduce drag, which, again, is going to help you save a little
bit more money at the pump.
So switching gears to the installation portion of the video, just like I had said up top,
you're looking at a very easy one out of three wrenches in the difficulty meter, about 15
to 20 minutes to get this on, despite needing to do a little bit of drilling.
But you're only gonna be tapping about four holes here with a quarter-inch bit, really
nothing crazy.
If you're honestly uncomfortable with drilling into your truck, any body shop or dealership
would definitely throw this on for you in a heartbeat.
So taking a closer look, you're definitely gonna need a quarter-inch drill bit, a seven-sixteenth-wrench,
a little bit of patience here.
But honestly, Covercraft's gonna have you covered here literally with some really detailed
instructions.
You're honestly gonna be marking up a small template here to tap your holes.
Once they're through, you're essentially putting your brackets on, screwing them down, putting
this into place, and you're good to go.
All right, guys, so just to wrap things up here, some final thoughts.
If you're the F-150 owner that's looking to give your truck a little bit more of a pre-runner
feel to it as well as save you some money at the pump by reducing drag, I'd definitely
suggest checking this out for your rig.
All right, guys, so that's my quick review and breakdown of the Covercraft Pro Runner
Tailgate Net fitting your 1997 through current F-150 available right here at americanmuscle.com.
