Today, the Pacific Fleet welcomes
the repaired diesel-electric submarine Komsomolsk-on-Amur.
It was modernized at the Amur Shipyard in the Khabarovsk Krai.
At the end of last year, the submarine passed the at-sea tests,
and now it can take up combat duty.
Andrei Kolesnikov reports from Vladivostok.
Introduced in 1991, this submarine had been successfully
performing combat and training tasks until the beginning of the 2000s.
Then it was decided it needed to be greatly modernized.
In fact, only the shell was left untouched.
Designers seriously upgraded its combat and technical equipment,
and now Varshavyanka once again joins the Pacific Fleet,
now being one of the most modern and quiet submarines in the world.
Project 877's large diesel-electric submarine
Komsomolsk-on-Amur has retaken its place today
among the fighting force of submarines in the Ulysses Bay near Vladivostok.
We are pleased not only because the the entire fleet has been reinforced,
but also because it is crucial for us that this submarine
was renovated in the shipyard in the Far East.
The Pacific Fleet is in dire need
of a strong ship-building and ship-repairing base in the Far East.
The submarine is designed to combat surface ships and enemy submarines,
set minefields and direct reconnaissance.
One of the main advantages of this type of submarine is it is quiet.
The military is not willing to talk about the upgrades.
As the new equipment is classified.
The main submarine control systems were replaced with modern, digital ones.
Furthermore, its properties to detect enemy submarines were improved.
New antenna and new space communication systems were also installed.
While shipbuilders from Komsomolsk-on-Amur were perfecting the submarine,
its old crew had to be re-trained on the newest ship in the Baltic Sea.
The team accomplished it in only one year after the completion of its construction.
Performing numerous sea tests and state quality control tests
near the coasts of the Primorski Krai.
I am very satisfied, it is a very good submarine,
it is well-made,
it works well, everything is new, everything is trouble-free.
The submarine is ready for operation
and will soon be launched to perform its first tasks.
