In the first lecture I want to talk about what is coaching.
Me personally like the most the definition given by Sir John Whitmore in his book "Coaching
for performance". The definition goes as following: Coaching is unlocking a person's
potential to maximize their own performance.
It is helping them learn rather than teaching them.
I would add to that Tim Gallwey's quote from his book The Inner Game of Work: "Coaching
is an art of creating an environment, through conversation and a way of being, that facilitates
the process by which a person can move toward desired goals in a fulfilling manner."
I know it sounds a bit complicated so to put it simple coaching is a way of communication
that lets the client release their potential to the max.
If you're still not really getting it, don't worry.
You will by time as I give more details on how it works right now in this video and in
the following lectures.
To clear it up a bit let's take a look at the scheme.
You can see this vertical vector going from Answers to Questions and a horizontal one
going from Problems or Past to Solutions or Future.
So if we focus on the problem, ask questions like Why did it happen? and look for a cause
of it in the past then to work on it and to cure it, that's what psychotherapy is.
If we are an experts in the field we analyze the situation and then give a report of what
state the things are in and what we suggest to do that's consulting.
If the client comes with a certain problem that we know how to solve and we teach them
how to do it using our methods it's training.
And when we let the client himself choose a way to solution, and what would be that
solution for them that is coaching.
Coaching is all about asking questions and move clients' focus from the problem to
the solution.
So that you could better understand what a great thing coaching is, I wanna say a few
more words on why this approach has proved itself to be effective.
Do you remember when was the last time you've asked for advice from your friends or family
members or someone else?
Rememebered?
And did you apply what they advised to you?
Think about it for a while.
I'm pretty sure you did only if what they advised was what you yourself were thinking
to do.
And if what they advised wasn't that then most likely you didn't do it even if it sounded
good and well grounded.
Do you understand what I'm leading to?
Maybe you have heard of one of the education principles.
It states that after a week after studies a person only remember about 20% of what they
learned but about 80% of what they practiced.
So the same logic is with coaching.
If you just tell a person what they have to do it's quite likely after some while they
won't have much progress.
It's not because you're not professional or not qualified enough but because the solution
you offered might be not the best for that person.
But if you help that person to come up with their own way to solve the matter then most
likely that person will apply that and get the improvements they want.
That's what makes the coaching efficient.
That's all for now.
Hope this made sense! And see you in the next video!
