Waching daily Mar 6 2018

Guys, last year's Rube Goldberg was so cool.

It was.

I know.

But what about this year?

We're gonna have to keep waiting and waiting and

waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting

and waiting. OK, we get it, we get it. Bella.

And waiting.

Ahhhhhh.

I wish we had something that could help us.

Same.

I hear you needed some assistance.

Mr. Goldberg?!?!

Assistant, the guides.

Whoa!!!!

This so cool.

That's all the stuff we need to learn.

Whoa, look at that.

This is so awesome.

Ooo, there's an airplane.

This is so cool.

This is so awesome.

Hey, look, look, look. And fruit. Thank you Mr. Goldberg.

Yeah.

Thank you.

Thank you so much. Ohhhhh.

A balloon with a chair.

Art Journal for Beginners | How to do Art Journaling ? | Mixed Media Formula #4 - Duration: 1:00:13.

hi everyone its Keren here and welcome back to my channel today I have a brand

new video tutorial it's a new art general in page how to start an art

journal page or how to do in our journal page and what I wanted to do is just

talk a little bit about the other formulas that I have done this is the

fourth video which means the fourth formula that I've done with the exact

same products which is a soft matte gel from Prima the modeling paste and they

clear just so these are the basic products you need for mixed-media and

art journaling and then i'm using the color bloom sprays of course you can

substitute these for other brand of products but i just wanted to use the

same ones for all videos and i'm linking the videos below in the description area

i just wanted to apologize that this is been a week since I've done my other

video I've been basically almost bedridden with a really really bad

inflammation and pain in my knee and I really could not walk and I could not do

any art I was so painful that I actually could not even function so it took me a

while to do this fourth video and I apologize for that I just wanted to come

back and do it right away because I did the first three videos quite quickly

like one after the other but I didn't forget about it and I just want to do

the fourth one now this is my joggled journal I want to show you the other art

journaling pages that I did this is for formula number one and in this one if

you recall if I recall let's go with that I did gesso and then I use modeling

paste sprays and then the soft gel then you have formula number two and you know

go back and read I can't remember I have to look it up wait I have it on my phone

here so I'll remind you which one I did and I'm going to link these below so you

know and formula than the two I've actually used a modeling paste first

with a really nice the crafters workshop stencil and this happened to be one of

my favorite for everyone I'm and I really love in myself the colors are so

bold so it's really nice and the stencil is nice so if

first I used modeling paste then I applied a gesso

then I put the spray and finally the gel to glue everything else and for formula

number three I actually used the gel first because I used it with some paper

underneath then I used a gesso this phrase and finally the modeling paste

which you can see at the top and it kind of created a really nice texture today's

today's a formula it's very similar to this one but I'm actually switching the

the sorry I'm switching it around just to show you why how it works when you

switch the formulas there's so many different formulas you can do with the

same exact products really there's so many and as you start adding products

from mixed media you tend to start mixing more things and experimenting

more so again I encourage everybody always experiment always have fun and

don't worry about the outcome just try your best and try to experiment and this

what I like about this journal is that you can take the pages apart and I'm

going to do that and show you again today and I'll put them back to the

other afterwards so this is the juggles this bound watercolor journal and I'm

just taking two pages you don't have to work it two pages some people just work

with one page I like doing double page layouts they look but more spread out

and cohesive but you don't have to you could leave the bag blank a lot of

people just do one page and leave the other side basically blank because you

see how they get stained on the other side so you could do one page and then

another page in another page and just have the one side blank or you could do

one page on each side and have them different it that's up to you so I'm

gonna put this aside and I will have the two separate pages here and what I like

about this is that you can use them and apply things without having to work on a

bulky journal so you can remove the pages these pages are very very thick

there are a thick watercolor paper amazing for mixed-media or watercolor

any type of thick mediums that you want to put on them so for today's formula

the first thing I am going to do is the same thing as last time I'm going

to use the soft matte gel with some tissue paper to create some texture in

the background then I'm gonna use modeling paste then just sew and finally

the sprays I will go back a little bit to the soft gel just to put the to put

like some of the sentiments at the end and I wanted to also say something in

this like you can see my nails I had to cut them off I didn't even have time to

remove my nail polish so it looks awful but that's okay and I actually even cut

myself so today I am going to use gloves because I really want to protect my nail

I have a like I've an injury here so I want to make sure I think I ripped my

nail too far and still having a little injury here so I want to make sure that

I don't get it that infected or anything like that so I'm definitely gonna use

glove at least on this in this hand but you don't have to use gloves I usually

don't use them but it's nice to sometimes have them handy and I buy them

at the dollar store I think I buy a package for that so let's get started

with formula number four so I gathered some tissue paper and also some napkins

as I said last time you could use different things to kind of create nice

texture in the background and I used last time I use the Tim Holtz like

tissue paper this is the one I'll show you in a second everything is dropping

so it was this tissue paper that you could use so you can go watch that video

I also use this tissue paper it's a script' tissue paper from canvas

corp you can use any tissue paper that you want you could even use like

something this came out of like I bought this it's like it has a nice pattern

it's just really light and it's firm like a tissue paper that I used like I

bought up shirt and some stores have a really nice tissue paper and then like I

showed last time you can use napkins and I thought you know but let me use a

napkin today to really show you how it work how cool it can look and this is a

very busy napkin I just thought it would look really cool and the

background I mean I know as it is I'm always trying to experiment and do

things and other things sorry that you could use also in the background I want

to show you before everything fall is like washi tape this is really nice

washi tape from Dena Wakeley so you could just stick things on so but I

don't want to complicate things too much I want to just show you simple basic

mixed-media our journaling and to use a napkin you know how napkins have

different layers you do need to basically separate the layers and

sometimes that is a challenging task so I'll try I don't know why I can't

separate them red you're supposed to once I separate it okay so let me do

this off-screen and they'll don't waste your time looking at how I'm doing this

so I'll be right back and I would not be able to do this with gloves so it's good

thing that I didn't put them on yet I did it I wonder if there's a second

layer as well for me because you want you could I mean you could save this or

something else I think there might be another layer let's just check oh there

I got it so you see how I'm like separating the nice layer from

everything you want to have just a pattern have it as thin as possible

okay-dokey no it's dead so you could save this so you could throw this

whatever you want with the white stuff and to use what you use for this is the

gel and I'm thinking I'm not gonna use the whole pattern first so I don't want

this strip I just want the flowers so I'm going to just rip it you could just

glue it straight you don't have to rip it like I'm doing but I really wanted to

just include the flowers only so let me get a straight edge here so I will get

the straight edge here and you can always cut it around so you're I'm kind

of doing it straight but not exactly don't forget to have

these grooves that I don't feel like cutting around so I'm not even going to

roll around so everything I'm just going to kind of cut like this and there's not

really a rule how to do this there I think like that

it doesn't have to cover at all because I want to make sure that these are not

covered right because then I won't be able to put them back in the album and

let's see the other side mm-hmm like this I don't think I wanted butterflies

in it I'm sure that would look nice so I could use actually a butterfly's after

and cut them out into the to make to keep it into my butterfly themed of all

four formulas so let me just not use the butterflies now and I'll cut them off

after and I'll actually cut around them and you can use them as like

centerpieces so yeah I think this will work so I am going to grab this off my

gel and use like I did before with my silicon brush and all you do is really

easy same as a tissue paper you can just apply it onto the background just make

you get it make sure you get an even coat so you make so you don't get any

air bubbles in your underneath your napkin and again you can use anything

for this like it doesn't have to couldn't even use scrapbooking paper you

don't have to use like this you can use like scrap paper you know just make sure

it's thin enough I mean it could be thick as well but it's just it's harder

to glue thick stuff I just find it harder when it's really thin it glues so

nicely on hmm and this is almost like what we used to do like deco polish

basically doesn't matter if it gets wrinkles or it rips no it doesn't matter

to me because you know what it's part of the

design it's part of the texture if you are very careful you will not get those

wrinkles and you want to get rips like I just did here and that's

okay but I like it it look enough looks at this dress so all you want to do

after that is just seal the paper because you want to protect it from the

medium so you're gonna put on I would definitely seal the paper do not leave

it like this it's too thin and as you sew even a tiny little like scratch just

makes a huge hole so you want the gel actually protects it and seals it so

it'll be part of the background there we go there we go so I'm gonna let this dry

and then I'm gonna cut around it so I really like that this is a really nice

it's completely different I guess to my other designs but it will kind of tie in

with everything else you'll see at the end I'm gonna do the same thing on this

side so this is what I mean by experimenting

and I guess I didn't put my gloves on I should put the glove on I will when I

have to do this phrase okay right now I'm not touching anything so it's okay

I'm only only this is touching the medium but sometimes I tend to put my

fingers and things so that's where the problem comes and the other direction if

you need to with with the silicone brush just as smoothly the house you don't

want any like thick areas not that it matters I guess but you want to be able

to avoid the thick hair areas okay let me try to line this up so I can get

those butterflies because I only have one of these napkins I must have seen it

and really liked it yeah that'll work

oh I must have ripped this other butterfly as well they mean to do that

and just want to seal this and if the corners after like after you Cod need a

little bit more glowing then you just do that you just glue oh I just forgot

sorry I just realized I glued this right on top where I wasn't supposed to come

on cuz I don't feel like I don't feel like cutting this after there we go I

just almost forgot to do that if you're in a regular journal that doesn't have

these openings and you're good you don't have to like worry about that but since

I need I need to keep these in and and this will be kind of like a white space

for me so that's okay I don't mind it and you could cover it all and then go

and cut it if you really want to I just don't have the patience for that I'm a

very impatient I hurt you which is not fair bushy look at that see I went to

care and it wasn't sorry I wasn't careful and look at the hole that I did

good by doing that's okay as I said it's part of the design and actually don't

mind those tears they look really nice okay so I'm going to dry this up I am

going to then cut around and then you'll sculpt you I'll come back once it's all

cut okay so I finished drying everything and I actually cut all around with just

regular scissors not a big deal once it's dry it's easy to cut off and I

didn't need to show you that on a video and I'm going to add the stenciling now

and you see how sometimes it lifts here I just have to add a little bit more

glue I'll do that in a second a more gel I meant to say but one thing I want to

talk about like this formula for the reason why this this one as a formula

for and did the other ones has one two and three is because I feel like this

one is a little bit more involved it's not as beginners I mean it's still a

beginner because I'm still using the beginner products but I think because I

added a very busy pattern here it will show you a little bit more there's a

little bit more layering layering info this one has the most amount of layers

because it has the same amount plus at the end I'm using the gel I'm using the

gel two times so don't be afraid to experiment this is what I always say and

if you don't have this type of pattern which you could use a scrapbooking paper

as I said for this but if you don't have this type of pattern it doesn't really

matter what pattern you put in the background you're gonna see that I'm

going to hide some of this pattern after and that just helps to kind of bring

everything together but playing around with it and then seeing like you like

you can always use gesso to hide things so if you don't think it's too intense

which this looks beautiful and so on but if you think it's something looks too

intense then just go ahead and cover it up and start again or don't put the

paper and just do the other you could do just the next step without adding the

gel underneath it's like the other formula so you play around with the

formulas until you're happy with the result I'm going to use a stencil from

the from jong-il's I really love this stencil I was gonna use a different one

with a pattern but I really don't want to hide the flowers so I thought this

was a perfect stencil it'll they look like kind of palm leaves I will get the

name after I will post it below I just can't remember what this one is called

and I'm going to use modeling paste now of course any type of texture of stencil

would work for this you don't have to worry about which type of stencil you're

using and what I'm going to do is I'm going to kind of create a nice pattern

of leaves in between the flowers so if you see that there's a flower here I do

not want to cover that flower so I will just go in between the flower

I'm gonna use my modeling paste and again my silicone knife you see how many

uses this silicone knife is good for like you use it for the gel you could

use it for the modeling paste and with this one stand still I have to go

against the green just be careful because things tend to lift up which I

think I just made a mistake on it but that's okay okay let me see how this

turned out you will really not see much of it oh no you will never mind I'm

gonna take that back you do see a little bit of it now I'm

going to use a different leaf and just have to be careful not to smush this

other one so I'm going to use a different leaf over here and it can

stick out a little bit out of the page so I'm gonna use it here and just have

to go in the opposite direction otherwise it gets caught which I'm

getting stuck on Hanah I guess if you in this case if you use a little bit more

modelling piece even though I always tell you to use a little bit but if you

use a little bit more modeling piece with something like this it helps

because it doesn't their little pieces don't get lifted so that's that it got a

little bit smushed but that's okay and then I want to add another one here on

the third and I might actually might cover this flower just because it's kind

of purplish I'm going to go with the red flowers and the orange ones which are on

both sides so I might hide a little bit of the purple not sure how it will turn

out you'll see what I mean by hiding I will be using a little bit of white

gesso this time I know I said I wasn't going to use white gesso and I showed

you last the last formula how the white gesso can hide some areas but I think

I'm gonna have to use it here because otherwise it will be too bright and let

me just put this on and I'm holding it up so it doesn't interfere with the

other one if you don't want to hold it up I'm used to doing this and it's easy

for me and I don't care if it gets mucked up a little bit if you don't want

to do this you can dry up in between each leaf application or each stencil so

if you want to add something here and then something on the other side and you

don't want to wait I don't want to like make a mess of it all you have to do is

just dry it in between so there's that one side I'm going to move this to the

side so that way it's easier for me to work on this other one without mucking

the other side and that's what I like I just mentioned this before this is what

I love about this stencil is that you can not the stand so sorry this journal

because you can move the pages around is great I'm gonna put a really big leaf

here I really want to have a space here for putting a really big leaf so I'm

going to do that because I want to and

this is the same process and I realized something a few people have left

messages for me saying that I at the beginning I talk too much

that I'm explaining too much but to tell the truth I feel like that explanation

is needed and if they don't like it they can just fast-forward it they don't have

to watch the beginning of each thing I do try to explain as much as I can but I

find that if I start making the project without explaining then first of all I

lose this train of thought and also like I can't talk about other things when I'm

working so I need to only talk about what I'm doing which is up let's say

applying the modeling paste or something else but I start start talking about

other things I get all confused and I guess I cannot think and and work at the

same time I don't know maybe that's just me maybe that's a higher function kind

of you know thing that people have but I just can't do it now I want to show you

one thing I'm gonna bring the other one back just to show you what I mean so we

know that in in any type of composition whether it's layout or like a project or

even in this case art journaling you want to have an odd number of things on

the page so and if you just were doing this one page it has three and you kind

of bring the focal point to this flower over here

however I'm thinking of the whole journal as a whole and trying to explain

why I could put three here as well but I'm kind of running out of space number

one number two I wanted to put this big leaf over here so I can count

odd numbers including the whole page and just put a little leaf right here and

that will be the hoe like that will be balanced sorry that will balance the

whole art journal page if you understand what I mean

so you can count it as three and three or you could do five and then your art

you could also do three and the whole things we could have

put one here one here and one and one in the middle so there's many different

ways of balancing in our journal page I'm just going to move this back I just

wanted to talk about that because it's an important aspect of our journaling

it's an important aspect of art balancing something so your eye gets

drawn to wherever you're telling the viewers to draw it to so if you want

everybody to focus on a specific focal point like and like this flower for

example you need to draw the eye to that flower in order to do that you need to

have an even an odd number of objects drawing it to that are it to that focal

point whether it is an archway whether it is a stencil area whether it is an

embellishment or anything like that and as I said you see I'm talking and I

can't like do the paste when I'm talking because I really want to explain what I

mean however I will put this one down and then I will see if I need a third

one on this page and I will only know once I do it because sometimes it's just

natural you kind of see it and I tell people with my students what I tell

people to do is when they don't know I tell them to close their eyes and then

open their eyes right away and tell me the first thing they see if they see the

one focal point that they were talking about let's say this flower then you

know that you have balanced it properly so you can't you will not know until you

actually kind of close your eyes unless you've done this for many many years and

then you're okay and then you know so I find that this is okay but my eyes kind

of drawing everything on this to this direction it's not it's not making me

look here I feel like every time I look at this and if you want to just

literally cause the computer from pause the video for a second and close your

eyes and look at here and tell me what's the first thing that you see the first

thing that I see and I don't want you to get like I want you to do it I don't

want to tell you the answer because there's not really an

answer to this but it is like a more brain function thing you will I am

seeing this page and this one is kind of not hit it hidden for me it's not there

so I guess I did not balance it properly so I do need to anchor something over

here but to do that I don't want to cover this flower as I said so all I'm

going to do is I'm going to add a little tiny leaf here okay and I'm going to

hold it up like this and I'll show you what I mean and then we're gonna do the

experiment again the same way okay I add a tiny little one there and now do the

same thing close your eyes and then open them again and tell me what you see when

you open your eyes your eyes should focus on basically everything you will

be seeing both pages at once so I don't know if you notice the difference I mean

it's hard to tell like you might not notice that at first but the first time

everything was heavy over here and it wasn't balanced so my eye drew me

directly to this one in this page was kind of in the background was the second

thing that I saw however once I added this little anchor here in the back

which made this balance a little bit better which is what I should have like

done so this is where you kind of play with things you can see that now when I

close my eyes and open them right away I see the whole thing I don't see only one

thing and I like this kind of looks like a wild jungle I don't know anyways I'm

gonna clean my stencil let this dry and then come back in a few minutes now that

my modeling paste is fully dry and make sure you always clean your stencils

after you use modeling paste or any type of paste or Jess or any paint I mean

with paint you don't so much have to or with spray unless you want to not

contaminate next time but the paste relieves a really thick layer so you

really want to be able to clean your stencils you can use them next time

again the next layer that I'm going to put is

gesso and as I said I was going to use clear just so

for all five formulas and I'm going to do that just to show you why clear gesso

is so handy but for this formula I'm also going to integrate a little bit of

the white gesso like I did last last time in the last formula the good thing

about clear gesso or let's start with all Gesell's in general they're amazing

to prime any type of surface so in this case I'm priming paper so to get it

ready for the sprays that I'm going to be using now the difference that I that

is there between the clear gesso and the white gesso is obviously in the

transparency why gesso is obviously white and covers while the clear Jeff so

it gives you a clear finish now the reason why I like using clear gesso for

this type of sorry the reason why I said to use clear gesso it's just because

there was no difference in any of the formulas in terms of using it because I

could use either one and it would work the same but in this case one of the

things that clear gesso is great for is to be able to prime something that

already has a pattern so for example as you can see I'm adding it here and once

it dries which I'll show you in a couple of minutes once it dries it will dry

clear so you can see the pattern so if you do something like scrapbooking or

any our journal or anything that uses paper or any surface that you want to

show the pattern underneath like these flowers for example or or a script

pattern like in the other one all you have to do is your clear just so that

way that you're not hiding the pattern the pattern is still there and all you

did is prime the paper so you can use sprays so here you see me adding this

and I'm going to quickly heat set it so I can show you what I mean about it

keeping the pattern in the background

so as this dries you will see that I mean it does look kind of whitish or

like milky when you're using it but when you dry here I am drying it already the

pattern stays the same however it does have that greediness that the Jessel

usually has so when I put that texture when I put the sprays and the color it

will actually keep a so it will actually be able to absorb the color however one

of the things that I wanted to do is I didn't want to have such a busy

background so if you do want to cover certain areas of your art journal then

you can use white gesso and I'm going to show you what I mean by that so I'm

going to take some of my white gesso this is an art basic as well it's a

heavy gesso so it's quite thick there's different consistencies of gesso and you

can go watch my video on what is just so and the different types of jazz on how

to use it but for this case I like using the thick one because then I only have

to give it one coat of gesso I don't have to like do it a couple times which

is really nice to do there are liquid Gesell's out there there are a bit more

liquidy almost like the consistency of this other one or even lit more liquidy

than that and you can just find a gesture that you like and what works for

you so what I'm going to do is I'm going to take the white gesso and I'm going to

use it in certain areas just to hide some of the pattern that I don't want to

show in the background so I love this flowers for example so this flower I

don't want to cover but I do want to cover for example the stuff behind the

leaf because it made it really busy so this I want to cover a little bit and it

doesn't have to be fully covered just a little bit okay now if you want to give

it less of a cover all you have to do is just take the white gesso and then mix

it with a little bit of water

and what it does it creates a much liquid or I don't think that's a word a

liquid form of the Jessel and then you can just basically give it more like a

whitewash excuse me so you see how it gives it a more of a

whitewash instead of a full-coverage and let's say you covered it and you

actually don't want it covered so much you can go ahead and remove some of it

while it's still wet and it will still give you that nice white wash so I

wanted to cover the pattern behind this but I didn't want it so dark so I can go

ahead and just add some more of the SOI wipe it off a little bit so I'm going to

cover it a little bit here and just give this a nice whitewash that's it so there

I stayed with the focal point and so much for wearing gloves I keep on

forgetting to put them on I keeping the focal point the way I wanted it which is

this flower but I'm just whitewashing the rest of this stuff and I'm leaving

the flower quite strong they're the same thing I'm going to do on the other side

I'm going to cover the areas that I don't really want to be seen so strongly

so because I wanted to keep this in the reds and oranges colors all I'm going to

do is I'm going to cover the areas where I didn't want them to be where I didn't

want to show the other colors so there was some purple there so I am covering

that a bit and you can just cover other areas or wet as well there's no really

you're like a rule of what to cover and whatnot and as I said if you make a

mistake you can just go ahead and remove it the

nice thing about this is that once the gesso is there and you want to and you

spray it you can still remove some of the designs from so you can still remove

some of the spray because the Jester kind of resists it so there we go

I think this is how I want it so you see I have these flowers then it's not

really balance its moral oh no it is actually it's balanced here I keep on

not seeing the bottom of this so I like that and I just going to dry this up I'm

going to dry it up and then I'm going to add this phrase which is my favorite

part usually okay so let me dry this and I'll be back in a few minutes okay it's

dry and I finally decided to put at least a glove on this hand where I have

the little cut on and I am going to add the sprays as you can see what I meant

by the white that kind of covered some of the areas and if you really want it

fully covered you can add another layer of gesso once you dry the first one but

I'm okay with this that I want to show some of the pattern but I didn't want to

show those strong colors now I'm going to spray and I'm going you know I'm

going to use three colors I'm going to use three color bloom spray colors which

is the same stuff I've been using before I'm just switching colors between the

layouts just because to just a variety I get bored of the same colors this is the

spring dandelion it's a yellowish color then I'm going to use the brimstone

wings and Sun is finally the golden oregano which is kind of like a greenish

color as well sorry so that I'm using yellow and green and I want to start

with the lightest color which is a yellow and this one is just easy to just

apply it everywhere would you barely see anything it's a very light color this is

actually my last bottle of it I have to get some more and what happened is that

it's very diluted because I just added more water even though technically there

was not much in there so you won't see that much of this yellow really even

after you might not and I'm going to mix it with some of the brimstone wings one

of my favorite kind of greenish colors it's beautiful

and you see that red flower still stays there but I will show you that you can

actually use a wipe after to wipe off the excess around the flower so you

don't get you don't get you don't cover it as much so the flowers can be kind of

pulled out of the black the background because you have that gesso so I added a

first layer I do want to add a little bit of the greenish layer but I want to

heat set this a little bit it's pulling too much and it's too watery so I'm

going to heat set this a little bit just so I can add that second layer after

otherwise everything will just fall everywhere I mean will just drip

everywhere I'm lightly heat setting it and this is

a good way of adding layers in terms of technique so you can add the layer of

let's say the light color and then you add the darker color after so this helps

just to kind of put it into place and I'm going to mix these a little bit and

if you don't like where something is going as I said before just wipe it off

so I mean I didn't dry it fully at all I still want it a little bit wet so when I

put the darker color it will it will mix with the other green it's just like fine

this is too much maybe I'll just wipe it off a little bit

okay so really I barely dried it I just wanted to have it in the background now

I'm going to add a darker green and for this one as I've used in the other

videos I want to use paint brush for it let me just find a clean paintbrush I'm

very bad at keeping my paint brushes clean okay so I'm going to go to the

bottom of this just to get the kind of the dark my car there and I'm going to

add it to the edges of my journal especially this edge and

once I lift tilted a little bit what the Grutter green is going I might hold it

like this I might have to add somewhere it's probably not enough sometimes you

have to add quite a bit in order for it to start moving or you could help it

with a little bit of water so there we go

it's starting to drip down but I don't want it so much to drip as I want it to

kind of go flow so if it's not flowing the way you like it you can use some

kind of trick and direct it to the area that you want well it looks cool it kind

of looks like a wild jungle this one over here it's nice but it's not what I

want but you know what let me just let it float I'm not going to fix it yet I

can always wipe off if I want to this is something that I'm not sure if it's

gonna look good so let me try let me just let me just go with the flow as I

said it's really important when you're doing art or any art journaling or art

to just go with the flow and because this one has a leaf coming this

direction maybe I'll let it drip in this direction as well yes okay that's good

now I like it better so you see I want to kind of drip it in the direction of

the leaves now I wanted to mention something really interesting about this

because I've talked about mixing colors and how you should stay with the same

family of colors warm colors or cool colors like the green is a cool color

and usually I like using it with blues or with yellows yellow kind of fits into

both warm and cold or somehow you can mix it with everything because it I

guess it's kind of a makeup color that it mixes with everything mixes also with

the Reds and also mixes with the blues but if you're going to add a red right

now to this if I went ahead now and added orange and red I'll end up with a

really dark brown so what happens you'll get up you'll get

kind of a muddy color which is not what you want obviously not not always I mean

you might want some brown but that's not what I want in this design so the cool

thing is and this is what I wanted to mention is that in order to avoid that I

added these red napkins underneath and they look like it's powder of the

pattern and I was able to get away with adding red flowers in the middle of a

green jungle so I mean you could get away with this with permanent inks but

when you're doing it with sprays or with paints you need to let it fully dry

before you add a color that is not from the same family of colors so if you do

want to add red after this you need to heat set this really well and even put

fixative on it in order for it to work and I'm going to talk about fixative in

a second but first let me do the other side so I really like that I might want

to add even some darker green we'll see what I can find but first I just want to

add the green on this side and let me move it to be closer and not go across

the page like that so that I don't like I don't like that one line okay okay so

here I know I have a leaf but the point is that I should lift it this way and

then put the little leaf on this side so in the other ones in the other journals

I tended to put the dark color at the end of the journal a tea that this eight

edge over here however because I have the leaves coming in different direction

I liked it better when the when the jernt was sorry when the drips are

coming towards the leaf or going in the direction of the leaf so sometimes you

do have to change directions you can't always I guess go in the same direction

as you've gone in other things and this is why it's so nice to experiment and

basically find things that you like to do and how you like to do them

you know what I once hold on I'm going to add some yellow here in the center

and make it have it mixed I want it lighter in the center maybe not so light

maybe a little bit of that light green okay that's good so that looks really

cool now what I'm going to do is I'm going to dry this and I'm going to add

another set of dark colors and then at the end I'm going to take a wipe and

just wipe off around the flower so you'll see that it really actually I

could do that right now never mind not at the end to kind of

take away some of that green from around the flower I can just dab it off and

then you have that flower really sticking out from underneath you need a

clean light for that so they Jess what makes it easier for you to do that

and then it's easy to just wipe up the areas that you don't know and I like

this flower as well so I'm gonna keep it there there we go so yeah I like that

I find it maybe I don't know I think I might cover that one back again if you

like it a certain way you just cover it up so let me dry this really really well

and then I'll add a second layer which is really important to do is to dry in

between the layers so that way you can you can they become darker so hold on

I'm gonna dry this and I'm also going to remove some of the pooling that is

here

just want to

or perfection I'm going to dry them so it's fully

dried and I really love how the pattern is coming out wow I really really like

that and I'm going to do a second layer with the same color which is the golden

oregano I'm gonna bring this back over here and again I'm going to add it and

this time I'm going to basically add it basically where the leaves are and I

want it it's too far away from me hold on here so I want to add it in the area

it just needs to be wet a little bit more once you have enough then it drips

nicely not sure it's not even dark enough you know what let me introduce a

new color this is the fern Edel it's not making it dark enough for me and I

really wanted darker this is a little bit of a different shade of green I

think I used this one last time on something so let's see if this works let

me get our wipe here too much of hair is pulling okay let me go in here with this

darker oh yes okay you see what I mean by that I wanted a little bit of a

darker color to pull pull around the leaves and at the edges of this yeah I

like that much better

and I said don't worry if it goes over the flower or the pattern it's not a

problem it can be wiped off as I said I don't want stripes I don't want the

little drips like that let me you know what you can also do you can also spray

a little bit of water to make it a little bit more watery that way when you

add the green it kind of flows yeah okay I should have done that to begin with

and I did this in the other ones I don't know why for thought about this so you

see how it flows and it becomes part of the background if you can balance this

properly you have a hard time you could dry and

do one leaf at a time so dry make this leaf dry it and do the other one I'm

just kind of balancing everything and things are might drip in different

directions and that's okay and let me do this one over here okay so I'm going to

add it here oh I forgot to water or the other option if you don't want to wet it

with water you can a little bit of the the lighter green it will mix really

nicely also it's a dark green so I put some of the brimstone wings and then

when I add the darker green it just flows with it so I want it to flow in

all directions and here as well so I'm kind of framing I always like

using the darker colors to frame things so in that sense it works out well let

me add a little bit of water here to kind of let make this flow it's a little

bit too perfect I want it to flow a little bit okay that's good let me add a

little bit of the that lime green the brimstone wings and don't worry as I

said about the flowers that will come off yes I really feel it needed that

darker color you can compare this isn't I mean this is beautiful on its own but

I really wanted a darker color to be there let me start on this side as well

so I'm gonna start with this leaf over here again I forgot I keep on forgetting

to wet this

maybe I'll just wet the whole thing that way it will flow everywhere so the

reason why it's pulling here in the middle it's because my page warped up a

little bit if you want to avoid warping I mean you can't avoid warping let me

rephrase that if you want to fix the warping on a page you could run it

through like a die-cutting machine on its own just protect it with

pages and just put the two clear plates on it and just run it through the

machine and it will flatten it up which is a good way of getting it to flatten a

nap and not be all worked up I don't worry about that too much

I just as I said go with the flow I like going with the flow

oh and I love this color I think four needles is another favorite I know I

think I have too many favorite colors this is where the problem comes and you

have too many favorite colors and you don't know what to do how about all the

favorites so there we go I like this a lot just want to help this

one a little bit it's kind of not helped okay there we go I really like that I

think this one is pulling too much here and I want to kind of move this around a

little bit so I like how this one I like the framing of this one I'm not going to

touch it I'm just going to pull some of these there's too much ink on this one

okay that's better so let me just add a little bit more here just at the edges

feels like good went in the middle and they forgot to keep stay some on this

side I want them a little bit in the side and kind of flowing in that's good

so the rest it's kind of look good to me

yes this looks like a tropical jungle to me that's basically what I came out of

it and you know what go to the dollar store and look for napkins there if you

go to a party and you see a napkin that you like you know somebody you might

let's you invited somebody hosted a party and you see her really napkin I

will have put in napkins in my in my purse before I've put doilies in my

purse before when I used to do a lot of scrapbooking and that was a great way to

mad things so anything can be recite so that's the beauty of it and it's so

nice to just do that okay let me close these so that way they don't get like

completely lost and you see how these leaves are partially like light and

partially dark I really like that so just key that happened naturally I

didn't plan for that I didn't know how I was going to come out but it happened

naturally and that looks really really good so the only thing I'm going to do

is I'm going to wipe off a little bit off the flower carefully so there is one

so I really want to show that flower and the same with this one I really want to

show this flower as well and the nice thing about the wipe is that it it kind

of takes off in a pan or in a perfect square so it kind of looks like it's

part of the design and look at that I love this I actually love it I can't

believe how like you know I didn't even actually know where I was going with

this one I've been like when I say I was bedridden I could barely move so I'm

really happy with how this turned out I'm really really excited I thought to

myself whether or not to put the butterflies as I said before I actually

was trying to see this butter so I could cut it out and put it here but you know

what it's so busy I'm not gonna add butterfly on this one cuz I think it's

gonna be too much I'm just gonna add my sentiments right over here the flowers

are perfectly spaced I don't need to do much to this anymore it's just done so I

just want to add a sentiment but let me dry this first because it's just too wet

to add anything

so I'm really loving how this turned out it actually looks to me like hibiscus

flowers in between a jungle I don't know I really like it but I guess it's my

thing so I should like it anyways I wanted to talk a little bit about

fixative I should have mentioned this in the other videos as well and because

these Collard bloom sprays and a lot of this sprays unless they're dye ink they

tend to mix with water even though after they're heat set so a good way to fixing

them is where there's a couple ways of fixing them one of them is to use

hairspray which is something that most people who most women have around the

house or you can just buy a cheap one somewhere but something that I'd like to

use as well is this it's called pixie dust fixative this is the Prima one and

it comes in a powder this is a brand new one I'm going to show you how it works

you could use it for to fix any type of medium that does not fix on its own does

it not that that basically reacts with things afterwards I'm going to mix it

with water this is just water

okay and then I'll just shake it and remember when you're shaking any type of

spray no matter which one it is even if it's fixative which is the clear color

always shake side to side don't shake up and down because they

will clog inside inside the spout so you want to shake this as much as you can to

get all the powder out and then what I'm going to do is I'm going to it's just

kind of milky water but it's fixed there now these sprays do have some fixative

in them but not fully so I do want to add some more into it you see it just

kind of has that milky nest in there oh and let me remove the has become a

little thing that stops it from spring so now this will wet everything again

and that's okay hold on hasn't caught on to the spray it a good thing once you're

done using your bottles you can reuse them and put make your own inks with it

okay now extreme okay so I just go spray everywhere you want to cover everything

so it fixes they the ink in the background the mica and then of course

you have to dry this because you see how it's still mixing with things but it

will just it doesn't like make them move everywhere it's just fix it them

wherever they are so let me dry this again I'm gonna dry this point

I mean I'm gonna dry this part and then I'm going to add my sentiment I wanted

to remove a little bit also of the ink above the pattern of the leaves to kind

of bring that nice modeling paste out so you can just grab a little wipe and just

remove a little bit of it and it just really makes it stick out which is

really nice so I haven't dried this all fully that way I can still remove some

of it because once it's dry with the fixative I won't be able to do this

anymore well I really like that it just brings out that nice pattern to this

surface the last thing I want to do is just add a sentiment and this is one of

the sin this is one of the tissue paper sentiments that I've used before this is

from the Dean awake the media collage words and all I want to do is just cut a

little piece out of it I picked already the one I want it I

want to say it's art you know art grows your spirit so I need to kind of go

around it and cut around it without cutting the gloves so there's lots of

there's a really nice things in all the tissues tissue paper and you can just

pick the one you want and it's perfect for our journaling I really love these

just very simple and I'm going to actually cut it in half to split it up

between split it up basically

okay so cuz it looks more balanced that way okay so then all I do is just you'd

use I didn't speak anymore I think I'm hungry it's lunchtime

all I do is use the gel medium again and as I say I could have used the gel

medium to glue the butterfly if I wanted for anything else but I'm just going to

use it to glue the little saying here I could add small butterflies I didn't

think of that I could technically go and add some smaller butterflies but I think

I like it the way it is I don't know if I want to change anything or add

anything except for the sentiment so they're resolved art grows so hard wore

it with gloves you see how now like that the color in the background is fixed and

it's not coming on top of my words I should have fixed any other ones as

well but I forgot and besides the fixative which I'm going to link as well

below the other thing that I'm going to link is wax from Dorland and that one

you can add it's a little wax that you add on top and that way this pages also

will not stick to each other over time the last thing I want to do is just

stick these back into my journal and look how easy it is to do this so I just

go ahead and stick this back right in

they pop in so nicely inside very easily oh very easy as I'm saying this and we

always do it backwards it's easier for me so I'm just a right-handed so it's

easier doing it the other way around and then you just pop it back up so there it

is my journal formula number four and stay tuned for the next one which is

formula number five I'm listing all the videos links below over the first few

formulas plus some other beginner mixed-media videos if you want to watch

and now it's fully dry so it's not even sticky or anything which is great thank

you so much for watching if you like my video please give it a thumbs up and

share it with your friends please on social media I really appreciate you

coming and watching all my videos and please share our Facebook Instagram

Pinterest wherever you want the more you share the better it is for all of us

Entrepreneur Network Podcast | Q1 What Has Driven Growth For TransferTravel? - Duration: 1:36.

this stems from my own personal experience of being left with pre-booked

travel plans that I could no longer use and when I was frustrated when I sort of

went to try to sell them or to try to let somebody else and use the travel

plans you know were no longer useful for me I found it difficult to to sell them

really and so you know I looked at normal listing sites like the eBay's and

the Gumtrees and the Craigslist of the world and theres a lot of people in

the same predicament as me selling these pre-booked travel plans but no one

really seems to be buying them and I think that was you know again from an

educational process and you know some of the fundamentals of do people

actually know you can transfer other travel and so from research we

looked at statistics we found a lot of reports by people like Forbes and the

BBC in the UK where they sort of mentioned you know 50 billion pounds

worth of travel went pre-booked, unused each year so you know two hundred

thousand hotel rooms a day were being wasted every day purely down to the fact that

people couldn't get you know refunds from it so for us it was it was very much

about understanding the market and understanding for myself you know how we

can help people in the same predicament as myself and you know try and help as

many people as we can recoup some of the money back just you know because I've

been there and I've done it so I was very driven by my own personal

experience because you know I knew what people needed and and what wasn't out

there to service that market.

#Hazard says he could have played for three hours vs City and not touched ball - Duration: 4:15.

Hazard says he could have played for three hours vs City and not touched ball

EDEN HAZARD admitted he was merely a bystander as pass-masters Manchester City gave Chelsea the runaround at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola's champions-in-waiting racked up a Premier League record 902 successful passes as they moved 18 points clear at the top with a 1-0 win.

Eden Hazard admitted he was just a passenger in Chelseas 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Manchester City 1-0 Chelsea: Bernardo Silva winner leaves Antonio Conte's side five points adrift in top four race and fires City one step closer to the title.

Ilkay Gundogan alone notched 167 of those — another Prem high — as the visitors were simply left chasing shadows.

Chelsea dangerman Hazard barely touched the ball as he was left isolated up front on Sunday.

The Belgian said: "When you leave the pitch you have the impression that you've ran, but that you haven't played a game of football.

That's a pity.

"We could have played on for three hours and I wouldn't touch a ball.

The Chelsea attacker barely had a touch as he was left isolated up front.

Eden Hazard did not even have a touch in the Manchester City box.

Antonio Conte's defending champs did not force City keeper Ederson into a single save — a couple of late efforts off target was all they offered.

The Chelsea boss was in no mood to apologise afterwards, saying the ultra-cautious approach had been his plan.

He had seen City dismantle Arsenal in a dazzling first half at the Emirates on Thursday and was keen to avoid a similar fate.

In fairness, other managers had tried it at the Etihad this season — notably the renowned tactician Rafa Benitez with Newcastle in January.

Get men behind the ball, keep your shape and don't get rolled over .

then hope for a breakaway late on.

You can understand it with a Newcastle team made up mostly of players who were in the Championship last season.

But Chelsea have world stars who can hurt City — as they proved while doing the double over them last term.

Yes, it was just 15 months ago that Conte's men produced one of the most thrilling displays of counter-attacking football you could imagine.

They soaked up an hour of City pressure, went a goal behind but then hit the hosts three times on the break to leave Guardiola gobsmacked.

Eden Hazard was visibly frustrated by the way Chelsea were playing.

Sunday's game followed a similar pattern early on.

But midway through the second half it was very different.

A clip emerged on social media of David Silva and Co passing the ball around just inside the Chelsea half.

Two banks of Blues players stood and watched, making no attempt to close down, until Cesc Fabregas finally put in a half-hearted effort.

It was a puzzling, lifeless display and the travelling fans must have been scratching their heads all the way back down the M6.

Graduate Student Seminar - Quick Tips for International Students - Duration: 31:08.

Welcome to the graduate student seminar series on Quick Tips for International Students – presented

by the Center for Career and Professional Development.

We are located on the third floor of Hendrix Student Center on the main campus.

We can also be found online at career.clemson.edu and on social media at ClemsonCCPD.

During this workshop, you will learn the basics about the Career Center and a quick overview

of resumes, cover letters, and interviews.

After viewing this workshop, we invite you to watch our full-length videos on each of

these topics.

The Center for Career and Professional Development, or CCPD for short, is comprised of 3 units

– the Michelin Career Center, the University Professional Internship and Co-op Program

(also known as UPIC), and the Cooperative Education Program.

As a graduate student, your interaction with the CCPD will be primarily through the Michelin Career

Center as the other two programs are either exclusively or primarily for undergraduate

students.

Through the Michelin Career Center, we offer career counseling, experiential

education opportunities, workshops, career fairs, networking events, employer events,

and recruiting services.

All services are available to graduate students as part of your student fees.

After graduation, we also serve alumni for one year.

You can see in our mission statement that the word "empower" is highlighted.

Our goal as a Center is to teach students the skills they need to be successful for

a lifetime whether that is resume writing, interviewing, networking, how to obtain professional

experience, and more.

Statistics show that people will have on average between 10 and 15 jobs during their career.

Our goal is to teach you the skills necessary to be successful in that environment.

Remember the saying – "If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day.

If you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime."

That is our philosophy in the Center.

Hopefully, you are familiar with our 9 core career competencies.

In addition to the career competencies, we also have the Learn-Act-Flex-Succeed cycle.

There has been a lot of press about the "skills gap," meaning employers do not believe college

students are learning the necessary skills to be successful in the world of work.

We believe it is more of an "articulation of skills" gap rather than students actually

lacking the necessary skills.

In an effort to help you understand what skills are important, we developed these 9 career core competencies.

All events and resources from the Center will be devoted to helping students understand,

acquire, and articulate these 9 competencies.

Think about the 9 competencies as the "what" we want you to learn and the Learn-Act-Flex-Succeed

cycle as the "how."

You can start by learning something new.

Trying out what you learned.

Flexing if it fails and looking for a new way until ultimately you reach success.

Today's workshop will focus on communication, self-awareness, and brand.

Who is available in the CCPD to help with your career development?

We have over 20 career counselors in the CCPD.

All are able to assist you in your career development.

In addition, we have an assistant director and a graduate assistant who provide promotion

and outreach to the graduate student population.

These individuals present the Graduate Student Career Workshop series each semester.

Where are they available to help with your career development?

We are located on the third floor of Hendrix Student Center on the main campus, Monday

through Friday from 8am to 4:30pm.

Or online at career.clemson.edu or social media at ClemsonCCPD.

Our main phone number is 864-656-6000 or our appointment line is 864-656-0440.

When are they available to help with your career development?

During the fall and spring semesters, we offer drop-ins Monday through Friday from 1:30 to

4pm.

See our website for summer hours.

These are for quick questions and last 10-15 minutes.

They are great opportunities to briefly talk to a career counselor about one topic of interest.

During the fall and spring semesters, we offer appointments Monday through Friday from 10am

to noon and 1:30 to 4pm.

See our website for summer hours.

These are great when you need to talk to a career counselor about multiple topics or

would like to spend more time discussing a topic.

You must call ahead for an appointment, and they last 30 or 60 minutes depending on the

topic.

For example, mock interviews last 60 minutes.

If you need help outside of our normal business hours, please check out our website at career.clemson.edu.

Located on the Resources page, you will find links to advice and handouts, workshops and

videos, and additional resources and job searching sites.

If you need last minute interview help, you can also utilize the virtual mock interview

system within ClemsonJobLink.

From our Resources page, you will also find a link to the Graduate Student Resources page.

This page features information and links dedicated to graduate students.

We provide basic access to a web resource called Versatile PhD.

The intended focus of this site is to help educate PhDs and ABDs on non-academic career

options.

There are first-person narratives are offered from those that have explored careers outside the academy.

When you visit the site, you choose to enter the STEM or the Humanities and Social Sciences

path.

This site posts jobs and hosts forums and meet-ups as well.

Another useful resource for graduate students is GoinGlobal.

Whether you want to apply to jobs internationally or are looking to relocate to another city

within the US, GoinGlobal provides country and city guides that outline job resources, resume

and cover letter advice specific to that country, cultural advice, financial considerations

and other information.

You can search for jobs and internships by entering keywords and locations.

The H1B database provides listings of US companies that have applied for H1B visas in the past.

This can help you target your search to specific companies that historically have been willing

to provide sponsorship.

If you want to learn more about using GoinGlobal, check out one of their student training webinars.

Check out our career fairs and other events.

The fall career fair is generally held in September.

The spring career fair is generally held in late January or early February.

We do offer some industry specific career fairs as well.

Check out our Events page for exact dates and more information about our upcoming events

and services.

On this slide are additional campus offices that are available to help with your professional

development.

Let's get into resume writing.

Remember, we have a full-length resume workshop available with additional details.

[reading quote] People are not born knowing how to write a

resume.

It is a learned skill.

Let's first learn some terminology.

In the US, a resume and CV are two different documents with different purposes.

In your country, you may use the term CV for the document we call a resume.

In the US, a CV is used for faculty positions and some research positions.

For jobs within business and industry, you will use a resume.

In the US, a resume is a concise summary of your work history and involvement.

Your name is featured at the top of the document listed as given name (or first name) then

family name.

In other countries, it may be listed in the opposite way: family name then given name.

In the US, the length of a resume is 1 page max per degree.

In other countries, length may not matter as you may be required to list a full history

rather than the highlights.

In the US, a resume does NOT include: photo, date of birth or age, marital status, race,

gender, religion, political affiliation, or TOEFL score.

Other countries may require some of this information.

This is a good visualization of how we build our resume and cover letter.

You will keep a document that lists all of your experiences, extra-curricular activities,

professional organization affiliations, honors and awards, presentations/publications, and so on.

From that document, you will build a tailored resume for each position featuring the experiences

that are relevant for that position.

Ok.

Let's get into formatting the resume.

Masters students can have 2 pages.

Ph.D. students can have 3 pages.

Recruiters are happy with still seeing a one page document from both levels if that is what you prefer.

You want to fill the page and keep the eye moving from left-to-right and down the page.

You can see on this slide that we placed a picture on the right side.

That balances the slide and has your eye move across the content as it moves down.

Margins can be 0.5" to 1", equal on all sides.

Your name should be the largest item on the page.

We suggest 14-16 point font. Everything else can be between 10 and 12 point font.

You should also only use standard fonts on a resume.

Avoid anything that looks like handwriting or cursive.

Standard fonts are easily read by the human eye as well as Applicant Tracking Software

systems.

You can see from this slide that each font takes up a different amount of space on the

page.

Choose the one that best fits your design preference.

If you are using a multiple page resume, you have to fill at least half of the second or

third page.

If you are not, use the margin, font size, and font type tricks to expand or contract

the information.

On pages 2 and 3, add your name and page numbers on the header in case the pages separate when

printing.

Consistency is key on resumes.

Make sure you use the same format for each position and education listing.

If you use months and year for one position, then use months and year for all positions.

Check with your faculty mentors to see if there is an industry standard or preference

for resumes.

Our advice today is general and should be acceptable across all industries.

Education should be near the top.

However, after you work for many years, it may be more appropriate to have your experience

first and education later in the document.

We discourage the use of tables, boxes, and preprogrammed templates.

These documents can be very difficult to edit and become quite large in file size.

If you have found a template that you like, try to recreate it on your own.

Your resume is a chance to emphasize and validate your skills in written English.

The interview will validate your speaking skills.

We suggest that you maintain a resume in the format appropriate for your native language

and country.

This will make it easy to apply for additional positions if you have a resume ready to go.

When reading resumes, recruiters will spend less than 10 seconds on the initial review.

Make sure you satisfy both types of resume reviewers – the skimmers and the skeptics.

Once your resume lands in the "no" pile, you will no longer be considered.

A skimmer will prefer that your resume have concisely written bullet point statements.

They like one line bullet points and want to see the bullet points listed in order of

relevance for their position.

Most important skills and experience first, followed by next most important, and so on.

You have to grab their attention right away that you are qualified.

Do NOT make them search for your relevant skills and experience.

A skeptic might spend a little more time reading your bullet point statements.

They prefer that your resume show support for your experience and skills.

This can be done by quantifying your experience with numbers, monetary values, and percentages.

Show the impact you had on the position and the organization.

On the slide, you can see examples that will satisfy both types of reviewers.

in the Graduate Student Resources section.

Let's move on to cover letters.

Here is our visual again.

Remember that we took our document that lists all of our experiences and created a tailored

resume from that.

Now, we will do the same for the cover letter.

The cover letter is even shorter in length than the resume and is meant to highlight

specific information from your resume.

Cover letters serve as an introduction of yourself to an employer and accompanies your

resume.

It should state the purpose for the correspondence (for example, to apply to position "XYZ"

at the company), your interest in that position, and a brief summary of your most relevant

qualifications.

In other words, a cover letter is the opportunity to illustrate to the employer the two or three

most relevant and pertinent skills and knowledge gained from past experiences that match those

skills and knowledge desired from the position description and explains why you are the best

candidate for the position.

You should address the cover letter to a specific person whenever possible.

You can use "Dear Hiring Manager" if you cannot locate a name.

Cover letters are formal, professional writing.

Keep them concise and to the point.

Recruiters do not want your entire life story.

Again, it is a quick summary of the most relevant experience you hold in relation to the position.

It helps to tell the recruiter where to focus his or her attention when reviewing your resume.

As with resumes, you should tailor each cover letter you write.

Never send a generic cover letter.

This slide shows several types of writing that you may provide to companies to illustrate

your qualifications for a position.

Each of these items represents your personal brand.

If you are detail oriented, creative, and meticulous when creating your own documents,

then companies believe that will translate to how you will represent them once hired.

Take a careful look at how you are communicating on your own behalf.

Is it hurting or helping you?

Adjust your behaviors where necessary so that you make a great first impression.

On average, companies receive 118 applications for any given job posting.

So unfortunately, you are not the only qualified applicant for the position.

When it comes to deciding who will be offered an interview, other factors are important

such as word choice, tone, and your email and phone call etiquette.

Make sure your documents are reviewed and listen to the feedback.

It is very easy to miss a grammar or spelling mistake when you have looked at a document

50 times.

Others may give you valuable advice on wording or additional experiences you should highlight.

Remember to include relevant experience and skills on the resume and cover letter.

Be concise.

As recruiters read your resume and cover letter, they are looking to mentally check off that

you have the experience needed for their position.

It is important to be polite during the job search process.

"Please" and "thank you" can set you apart from others.

Be sure to use the correct title when addressing individuals.

If it is an academic position, you are likely addressing a PhD or a Dr. For female recruiters, we

suggest using Ms. as it does not designate marital status.

Also, do not assume the hiring manager is male based on the first name.

For example, Alex can be short for Alexander (male) or Alexandra (female).

Finally, watch your tone.

Do not be demanding or impatient in your interactions with recruiters.

Timely follow-up is appropriate but constant phone calls and emails will NOT get you the

job.

Be mindful of people's time and schedules when you are requesting feedback. Language can also be a barrier but please don't use it as an excuse. Come to the Career Center or the Writing Center and let us help you review your documents.

Graduate Student Resources section.

Let's move on to interview skills.

It is very important to show off your knowledge of the company.

Spend a significant amount of time on the organization's website learning about its

history, mission, values, and products and services.

Research their name and reputation online to see what others are saying about the company.

It can be helpful to know a little bit about the interviewer as well.

Part of the reason for the interview is to see if your personality will fit in well with

the company and the team.

If you do a quick search on the organization's website for the interviewer's bio or look

them up on LinkedIn, you might find some information that gives you common ground.

Maybe you both went to the same university or researched similar topics or have similar

hobbies.

This can make the small talk at the beginning of the interview a little easier or you can

draw on your similarities later when answering questions.

Be cautious, though, as you don't want to seem like you know too much about them.

That can be a turnoff.

Know yourself.

What makes you the best candidate for the position?

They may ask you that very question.

How would you respond?

Just like you tailored your resume and cover letter for the position, you have to do the

same in the interview.

Are you telling the right stories that convey that you have the needed skills and experiences

to excel in the position?

Think of 4 to 6 different examples that highlight a variety of soft skills and technical skills.

One strategy I use when preparing for an interview, is to try and predict the questions that they

may ask and then write out my response.

These can be examples from previous work experiences, classroom projects, research, and extracurricular

or volunteer activities.

Let them see the whole you.

Finally, practice, practice, practice.

Make sure your stories or answers do not sound rehearsed.

You can participate in a virtual mock interview through ClemsonJobLink or come into our office

for a 60-minute mock interview appointment.

Think through the location of the interview and how you will get there.

Do you have a car or do you need to find transportation?

Take into consideration traffic and the length of the commute when making your plans for

the interview.

You do not want to feel stressed or frustrated from a bad drive into the company.

Consider the financial logistics.

Some companies do pay for travel related to the hiring process and some do not.

It is ok to ask if there is a reimbursement program if the interview will cost a considerable

amount of money.

For example, if you have to purchase a plane ticket, book a hotel room, and pay for day

of transportation.

In American culture, it is very important for you to arrive a few minutes early to an

interview.

We suggest 10-15 minutes early.

Being on time can be considered late by some interviewers.

And arriving after the interview start time is never acceptable and it might cause the

interview to be cancelled and you to no longer be considered for the position.

Remember, you are not the only qualified applicant so you have to make the best impression you

can during every stage of the job search process.

The interviewer should provide you with a basic outline of the interview schedule and

the style of the interview.

Is it telephone, skype, or in-person?

Is it on-campus or at their location?

If they do not provide this information, you should ask.

Knowing the length of the interview and the style of the interview will help you prepare

and feel more confident.

Let's talk about our "rules of 12" for a minute because you don't get a second

chance to make a first impression.

Think about the first 12 steps you take when your name is called.

Is your posture and demeanor confident?

Think about the first 12 words you say.

Were they negative or positive?

You always want them to be positive.

Even if you had the worst trip to their office, don't tell them that!

For the first 12 inches of your arms…avoid a lot of jewelry, especially noisy bracelets.

Interviews are a time when less is more.

Make sure your hands and nails are clean and well-groomed.

If you have tattoos, you may want to wear a long sleeve shirt in case the company has

a conservative culture.

Ensure that the length of your sleeves is not too short or too long.

For the top 12 inches, make sure your hair is clean and groomed.

Check that nothing is in your teeth or that your breath smells fresh.

Women should go conservative on make-up and make sure that your shirt is not too revealing.

Men should make sure your tie is tied correctly and straight.

For the bottom 12 inches, your shoes need to be clean and appropriate to the interview

setting.

Make sure the length of your pants is not too short or too long just as with your sleeves.

For women who wear skirts, do the "sit test" and make sure the skirt does not become too

short when sitting.

There are some other items to keep in mind too.

First is your handshake.

Please practice shaking hands with a friend or colleague.

Ask them if your handshake is too firm or too weak, too long or too short.

A good rule of thumb is to try and match the web of your hand (the area between your thumb

and index finger) with the web on his or her hand.

That will ensure that you get a nice grip.

Remember to stay positive and happy in your greeting.

This is a good time to show off a little bit of your personality.

Also, treat everyone you meet with the same level of respect whether they are the receptionist

or the CEO.

Many recruiters will ask others in the office about your demeanor.

Please refrain from wearing too much perfume or cologne and from smoking before an interview.

Many people have allergies or are sensitive to intense smells.

You should even wear a little extra deodorant that day to combat the extra perspiration

we all get when we are nervous.

You do not want your interviewer focusing on the smell in the room and not on your skills.

Also, if you check your breath and realize you could benefit from some freshening, please

do not use gum.

Instead, bring a small container of mini-mints or tic-tacs that be eaten quickly.

Finally, pay attention to your overall body language and your attire.

Are you giving off signals that you are bored, upset, uninterested or are you signally that

you are friendly and excited for the opportunity?

Sit up straight in your chair.

Avoid fidgeting and exaggerated use of your hands when talking.

Try to maintain eye contact with the interviewer 70% of the time.

Nonverbals are as important as how you are answering the questions.

For your attire, dress according to your industry.

When in doubt, a conservative, well-fitting suit is appropriate for both men and women.

Most interviews will follow the same basic structure.

Opening the conversation and building rapport with some brief small talk.

The company may take this opportunity to also give a brief overview of the position and

company as a whole.

The bulk of the interview is spent exploring your qualifications with questions.

This is your opportunity to showcase your education, skills, abilities, goals, and experience.

It is your job to sell yourself as the best fit for the position.

When we discussed how to prepare for the interview, I suggested coming up with 4-6 examples that

tell your story in relation to the position.

This is when you put them in action.

Include a mix of soft skills and technical skills when answering questions.

Make sure you always answer the questions fully.

If it is a two or three-part question, it is ok to ask them to repeat the question so

that you ensure you answer all parts.

The interview will wrap up with an opportunity for you to ask questions.

ALWAYS ask questions.

Prepare 3-5 questions that will clarify the position and help you decide if you would

accept the position if offered.

If this is a second-round interview, the questions should differ from the first round.

If you will be interviewing with multiple people or groups separately, prepare questions

that are suitable to each group.

One set of questions for a search committee, one set of questions for a supervisor, and

another set of questions for the potential coworkers that you would be working with for example.

The interviewer is likely to close with providing a timeline of their next steps.

If they do not, you should ask.

When answering questions, make sure are believable, positive, and confident.

If your experience is at the level of an intern, then don't make it sound like you were the

CEO.

If they ask a question related to a previous employer, don't answer negatively.

They are looking to see if you speak poorly about previous employers.

If you do, then you are likely to speak poorly about them so they will not want to hire you.

Be confident in your answers.

Let them see the whole picture of you and why you are the best fit for their company.

Organizations are bound by local, state, and federal anti-discrimination laws in hiring.

If you are asked questions specifically related to marital and family status, race, color,

national origin, religion, sex (which includes pregnancy, gender identity and sexual orientation),

age, disability, or genetic information, you have three options to consider when answering.

First, you can answer the question as it was asked.

However, that provides the employer with information that they could use to discriminate against

you in the hiring process.

Second, you can provide a tactful answer.

In this situation, consider the intent behind the question and how it may relate to the

job.

For example, you may be asked if you are married and have children because the position requires

considerable amount of travel.

What the interviewer is actually trying to determine is if you have the ability to meet

the travel requirement of the position.

Rather than answering that you are married with kids (or vice versa), you can say something

like, "I understand that this position requires weekly overnight travel.

I am able to meet that requirement."

You answered the intent of their question without providing the information that could

be used to discriminate against you.

The third option is to refuse to answer the question.

In the previous example, you could answer something like, "I'm uncomfortable answering

questions related to my marital and family status.

I am able to meet the travel requirements of this position."

The interviewer will move on at that point.

Some students volunteer information related to illegal questions on their resume by including

work experiences or extra-curricular activities that indicate their status.

For example, if you are heavily involved in volunteering at a religious organization,

an employer will assume that you are of that practicing religion.

For some individuals, those activities are an important part of their identity and they

prefer to list them.

That is a personal choice and ok to do as long as you understand that you have volunteered

information that an employer is not allowed to ask about during the hiring process.

As an international student, you need to understand your work authorization and be able to communicate

it to an employer.

You do not need sponsorship on day 1 of the job as you are generally authorized to work

for a certain length of time post-graduation through the use of OPT.

Sponsorship is a time consuming and expensive venture for organizations.

If they refuse to offer sponsorship, they will generally tell you that before you reach

the interview stage.

Japanese Secret For Healthy Young Skin Even After 50 Years! - Duration: 3:35.

Japanese Secret For Healthy Young Skin Even After 50 Years!

Lots of women nowadays are trying to find different methods to rejuvenate their skin

and maintain their youthful look longer.

Even though there is no miracle fountain of youth, there certainly are treatments that

can make your skin elastic. Expensive cosmetic treatments and products don't always offer

the wanted results which is why we have prepared a recipe for you that you can prepare at home.

This Japanese beauty mask uses natural ingredients that contain helpful elements for the skin.

The main ingredient in this mask is rice. Rice can rejuvenate the skin because of the

following properties:

#1. It tones the skin as well as contains inositol, an ingredient that promotes blood

circulation to the skin thus decrease aging and improve the overall skin health.

#2. It is rich in vitamin B which has useful properties for the health of the skin, hair

and nails. This vitamin protects the skin from damage due to environmental factors and

it also softens and improves it.

#3. Rice also hydrates the skin very well making it rejuvenated and firmer.

#4. It has an anti-wrinkle impact because of the inositol it contains which can promote

the blood flow as we previously mentioned thus fight wrinkles.

#5. Rice is also an outstanding exfoliator which gently gets rid of the dead skin cells

allowing the face to rejuvenate gradually.

#6. It removes flaws due to acne by purging, toning and reducing the appearance of acne.

REJUVENATING "JAPANESE" FACE MASK

The Japanese rejuvenating mask is filled with vitamins and rejuvenating properties and it

works finest if used at least twice a week. You can also add it to your normal cream in

order to improve its benefits.

INGREDIENTS:

3 tablespoons organic wild rice. You can find this in the market or health food stores,

make sure above all that it is organic, ie free from pesticides or chemicals, so you

will get all the natural properties of rice. ½ spoons of pure water

2 tablespoons of ripe avocado ½ teaspoon of honey

PREPARATION:

#1. The first thing we do is cook the rice. You use very little rice, as you can see,

however we want to make sure that the mask is freshly made every time, since it is how

to benefit of its characteristics. Heat the rice until tender and after that separate

the water from the rice. Save the two items.

#2. What we do now is to strain the rice and place it in another bowl and add the avocado

and the honey. Use a spoon to stir the mixture well to produce a fine, uniform paste. When

you are ready, apply it to your skin.

#3. Leave on your face for at least 15 or 20 minutes. Then use a cotton swab to remove

it and clean your face with the rice water you previously reserved. In this way, you

will exfoliate and treat small stains and impurities.

As you can see this facial mask of Japanese origin is very complete, simple and low-cost.

It allows us to gain from both rice and rice water. If you prepare this treatment twice

a week, it will rejuvenate your face every day. Try it!

Instagram Editing Tips: Hidden Tricks for Better Photos - Duration: 2:05.

Hey friends!

I'm Tasia and this video features 6 Instagram editing tips and tricks.

Be sure to hit that subscribe button for more content just like this.

Come on, let's get after it!

Did you know you can easily compare a filter to your original photo with just a tap?

After you select a filter, just tap and hold your photo to see the original.

Release to see the filter effect.

Once you've selected a filter, you can adjust the strength too.

Just tap on the selected filter thumbnail at the bottom to activate the intensity slider.

You can also rearrange and remove filters that you don't use.

There are a couple ways to do this.

You'll need to select a photo to post, then to quickly hide a filter, hold down on the

filter thumbnail at the bottom to drag and hide.

If you just want to rearrange the filter, tap and hold the thumbnail and move left or

right.

You can do all of the same things by swiping right to left through all the filters until

you get to the manage filters option on the right.

If you like posting multiple photos at once, but want a different filter for each photo,

you can do that too.

Once you've added the photos you'd like in the post, tap on each individual photo

to select filters for only that image.

Sometimes using the slider to adjust the filter or other edits like brightness or contrast,

can be finicky.

Instead, you can tap to the right or left of the circle on the slider to increase or

decrease the effect by 1 each time.

If you've gone down the rabbit hole of editing on Instagram and you're wondering which

edits you've made,

Instagram adds a grey dot underneath any effect you've added.
