Reds defender knows there is an area in which he has to change.
Joel Matip may be helping Liverpool keep goals out – but he wants to start contributing
further at the other end of the field.
Matip is vying with Dejan Lovren for the role of regular centre-back alongside club record
signing Virgil van Dijk.
The Cameroonian was in the starting line-up for the 5-0 win over Watford last weekend,
Liverpool's sixth clean sheet in nine games.
And having scored 23 times for previous club Schalke, Matip is now determined to improve
on his record of just two goals in 63 appearances for the Reds.
"I hope that a few more will follow as I am not happy with my goal return," he said.
"I am a defender, I know, but I think to myself that I could score more goals for Liverpool
than I already did.
"Maybe sometimes I need a little bit of luck, maybe sometimes I have to do something
different when I go forward.
I'm not desperate about it.
I'm still positive and I hope my next goal is not too far away."
Matip has partnered Van Dijk, Lovren and Ragnar Klavan in central defence at different points
of the season.
And he admits the versatility of playing on either the left or right side of the partnership
has stood him in good stead.
"It is the same position but not the same position, if you know what I mean," said
Matip, speaking to liverpoolfc.com.
"If you have to play more on your right or more on your left, it is not the biggest
difference, but it is different so you must adapt.
"In my time as a centre-back, – although not here – ,I have played in both positions
really often and maybe I prefer the right,
but I also played on the left for a few years so I feel comfortable and confident in both
positions."
