But this is the covenant that I will make with the house

In the days when Christ Jesus was in the flesh,
he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries
and tears to the one who was able to save him from death
and he was heard because of his reverence.
Son though he was, he learned obedience from what
he suffered and when he was made perfect,
he became the source of eternal salvation for all
who obey him.

- [Congregation] Glory to Jesus our Lord.
- Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover
feast came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee
and asked him, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus."
Philip went and told Andrew, then Andrew and Philip
went and told Jesus.
Jesus answered them, "The hour of man has come
"for the son of man to be glorified.
"Amen, amen I say to you unless a grain of wheat
"falls to the ground and dies, it remains
"just a grain of wheat, but if it dies,
"it produces much fruit.
"Whoever loves his life loses it and whoever hates
"his life in this world will preserve it
"for eternal life.
"Whoever serves me must follow me and where I am
"there also will my servant be.
"The father will honor whoever serves me.
"I am troubled now and yet what should I say?
"Father, save me from this hour?
"But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour.
"Father, glorify your name."
Then a voice came from heaven.
"I have glorified it and will glorify it again."
The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder,
but others said an angel has spoken to him.
Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come
"for my sake, but for yours.
"Now is the time of judgment on this world.
"Now the ruler of this world will be driven out
"and when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw
"everyone to myself."
He said this, indicating the kind of death
that he would die.
The Gospel of the Lord. - Praise to you Lord,
Jesus Christ.
- I remember in elementary school a long, long time ago
how in the springtime when you're maybe first or second
grade even, my teacher had brought Dixie cups
filled with soil and had given us each a seed
to put into the Dixie cup.
We watered the cups and every day she would tell us
to go to the windowsill and look and see
if anything was happening.
And for the first few days of course, we could see
no difference and started to get bored
with the exercise, but then one day one of my classmates
saw the tiniest of soil having been moved
and we all watched with more eagerness in the next days
as our seeds indeed sprouted and started to grow.
We, at that time in my life, lived in southwestern
North Dakota in agricultural country, so the idea
that you planted seeds and that they would grow
was not a new concept, but to watch in slow motion
how a seed very, very slowly starts to grow
was news even for us in winter wheat country.
Jesus uses that image of the seed dying to bring new life
as he talks about himself.
Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,
it remains just a grain of wheat, but if it dies,
it produces much fruit.
It's one of the many ways in which Jesus starts
to try to prepare his followers for what will happen
in the coming days in his own life,
knowing, especially the way John paints the picture
of Jesus, that this was going to happen.
We also get a glimpse of the internal life of Jesus
as he says, "I am troubled now, yet what
"should I say Father, save me from this hour?"
It has echoes, of course, from what we will hear
in the readings of The Passion in the Garden of Gethsemane
and yet, even though we're introduced into what Jesus
knows will be his own sacrifice, we're also tied to the fact
that Jesus knows that it's not about him, it's about
the glory of his father.
And so once again, we hear the voice, the voice from heaven
that once said "This is my beloved son."
Listen to him now saying, "I have glorified my name
"and will glorify it again."
We think about the slow work of God, slower even
than those bean seeds in elementary school going
from seeds to plants.
In our own lives, sometimes we wonder about that slow
work of God because when we look at our own spiritual
progress, we're often critical of ourselves.
Well, I should be praying, or I should be more forgiving,
or I shouldn't lose my temper so quickly,
or I shouldn't engage in gossip,
and all those things are very true, but what we sometimes
forget is what Jeremiah reminds us of in the first reading,
that God has written God's own law on our hearts.
Sometimes one of the things that I like to think about
during Lent is what's the soil of my heart like?
Has it grown hard and stony so that I have to
with the psalmist today, ask God to create a new heart
in me so that I might have room for God's life to sprout?
We're just now one week away from Holy Week.
Next Sunday, we gather for Palm Sunday and we hear
the Passion stories.
You think to be able to face our own sense of the passion,
death, and resurrection in our lives and we always
have to keep one eye on our hearts.
Have we allowed God's seed to grow in them or have we
closed them off because we know that unless a grain
of seed falls to the earth and dies,
it becomes a single seed, but if it dies,
it produces much fruit.
As Lent draws to a close this year, what kind of fruit
do our hearts produce and where is the slow work of God
still carving out new hearts for us?
Together, let us profess our faith.
I believe in one God, the father almighty,

Remember Lord, your church spread throughout the world
and bring her to the fullness of charity together
