Waching daily Mar 9 2018

My name is Davar Ardalan and I'm the founder and storyteller in chief of IVOW

And IVOW stands for "voices of wisdom," a vow to make sure that the future of

storytelling with artificial intelligence is culturally conscious.

Many of the stories that you might see in newspapers or in digital stories in

the future might be generated by machines and not journalists. This summer

it was the first time that parts of Wimbledon were actually reported by

machines. Across six courts in Wimbledon it was actually a machine that captured

the highlight videos so the machine was trained to understand the sound

that the audiences were making and the reaction of the athletes and the data

around the players, and they were able to generate within 50 minutes

video packages from six different courts at Wimbledon and share that with the

Wimbledon fan. This is an example of how machine learning is generating new

content. I was a production assistant at NPR News in 1994 and that's what I would

have been doing. Logging tape and listening for those highlight reels. But

the idea is that journalists are behind the creation of them. So the

understanding of the ethics and the journalism craft that goes into

creating the storytelling templates and also creating the infrastructure around

how to automate news. What we're doing is we're tagging data around culture

tradition and heritage and bringing together the power of artificial

intelligence to create stories that really anchor the public in the stories

of their traditions and cultures in new ways. The Washington Post, New York Times,

and Reuters are all veterans at this by this point in the last couple years and

their focus is on politics and business and entertainment and sports. It's

exciting for us to get into this field as people who come from a public media

background to think about also how do we capture data around culture and heritage

for communities around the world.

Treasure Time | I Came Back With My Shovel For A Deep Target - Duration: 1:12:25.

HELLO HUNTERS

I'm on my way to recover a deep target (I couldn't extract last year).

Today the coil will work.

It really is hard to see.

I'm starting at a different spot, because I couldn't find the old location.

But I will move towards it.

This hole was made by a boar.

The boar left something that sounds like iron.

He probably took out the coins, but I will check anyway.

Looks like a very old nail.

And nothing else.

First signal.

Actually iron and something else.

I have no idea...

A very weak signal.

I have trouble with this one.

Now it's almost gone, sounds partially like iron.

It's a Roman coin...

GPS "POI" #1.

A lid from a jar.

A bottle top.

Looks like a rivet.

#2

Another Roman coin.

Nothing else in the hole.

I will clean this one (just) a little bit and show it at the end.

There was small iron next to it.

Foil.

Probably iron only, but I will check.

The discrimination on my detector is set to "3".

It's a small nail, probably Roman.

Same story.

Sounds exactly the same, I will check.

This place feels strange, I think, it was already hunted precisely.

Look how tiny it is!

Must be from a Roman baby sandal.

Probably part from a shotgun cartridge.

I'm moving on, trying to find the location with my deep signal.

This one sounds bad.

It's a coin with iron core.

A German "5 Pfennig" (1950).

A shotgun cartridge.

"Double impact" :). Almost like my silver coins.

I think I found the spot.

It's partially plastic.

Old plastic :).

A piece of foil.

Let's find the deep target from last year.

The area changed since then, but I think it was here.

Where is it?...

I'm convinced that it's treasure!

This is it!

Meet my shovel.

I bought it to match the color of my glove.

This soil was hard last year, no chance to get to it with my knife.

If you need a very strong shovel, I can recommend this model.

I expect a small pot with gold or silver coins.

If that's not a treasure, I don't know what is...

I will take my time, I don't want to damage anything.

Almost there!

I will extend this side, to create a safety margin.

I'm out of breath. Sorry I'm a finder, not a digger ;).

Contact!

Hmm, I can already estimate the material.

It's not what I have expected.

...

Maybe it has ancient writings on it?

No...

But it looks like gold from this side.

Wait a minute!

No...

The hole is closed as you can see.

Nothing else inside...

What a disappointment - let's find something else...

Roots...

Why am I using my knife?

I have a shovel today...

In this terrain it really can be an advantage.

It's out (as you can hear).

Is it a coin?

A silver coin!

A broken one.

The boar must have found it first...

I'm glad it was in the plug, otherwise I would think, it was me.

"1 Kreuzer" (1808).

The metal detecting Gods gave me something to wipe off my tears.

I have no idea.

A worm.

It disappeared.

"Something small".

That's not my pinpointer.

Almost forgot the worm.

I see something round...

I think, it's "just" a button.

Let's go into the bushes.

Iron.

Look, an animal was lying there.

I'm probably in his bedroom.

Maybe the boars store the coins they find here.

Iron sound.

Hmm, another nail...

Another bed.

The jungle...

Now I'm on a path.

Probably shrapnel.

Clip from a sausage.

Old bullet shell.

People...

A piece of foil.

This one sounds good.

Hmm, I don't know what it is.

Foil.

A buckle.

A thimble.

:)

An old bullet shell again.

Hmm...

Too big - one treasure per day is enough.

Nothing...

A green bullet.

Next casing.

Where is my brush?

It's a badge.

It says: "DJV" (German Hunters Club).

There is something else.

It's the needle!

Oh no it just broke (without pressure) - it was too fragile.

A tiny pin.

This was a short walk to the side...

I'm back on my path.

A coin.

The color confused me for one second...

"5 Reichspfennig" (1925).

Foil...

A button.

Nothing special.

I'm already on my way out.

A .22 casing.

No, I'm not digging it.

No!

I can't leave it.

OMG, what a surprise!

It sounded like... iron.

Something came off.

Let's see the blade.

Nice.

It's way too heavy and badly balanced.

But it's a nice find.

I'm at 3h:11min.

#11

Let's see the blade one more time :).

It's too heavy.

That's it, I'm "fulfilled".

It was a long hunt, I hope you had a little bit of fun.

My assistant got dirty.

"5 Pfennig" (1950).

A small table?

A button.

This button will haunt you!

"5 Reichspfennig" (1925).

The Roman nails.

A thimble.

The buckle.

Badge ("DJV" - "German Hunters Club").

A rivet...

"1 Kreuzer" (1808).

The first Roman coin.

The second one (cleaned a little bit).

Trash...

And treasure - hunting time 3h:12m.

Kamran Abedini - Provost Award for Excellence in Teaching - Duration: 2:39.

I had the opportunity of being hired at a place that I really wanted to. Its by luck

or by chance or by grace of god or whatever you want to imagine. I wanted to

actually share my knowledge with people and making sure that they become better

people. So I'm not providing improving skills, that's a part of it, but I'm

making a person better thinker. And to do that I had to make sure that they

become wise. When I came here and I saw a lot of great professors around me and

they were quite capable and they were really good at what they were doing, I

actually wanted to be better than them. So I started learning what they were doing

and found all the different points that it was to their advantage and I learned

it and I tried to apply it. And as I try to apply it I found my own corner of the

market, you know, that I was really good at. I really respect my students and

I believe they're human beings, just like me. I don't think that any-- they're

smarter than me. I don't think I'm smarter than them. But you know in terms

of sharing information, I want to make sure that I grab their

attention. I read the facee very well at this moment of my life and I can see

when people actually get the idea. Once they get the idea, I want to push them to

promote it and talk about it so that they practice. That's the reason I

actually push my students to participate in competitions

as much as possible. Because they can improve themselves while they're doing this.

Not necessarily to beat somebody else but to actually improve themselves.

I was very excited to receive this award for the main reason that, you know, I

felt like I have I have accomplished that one goal and that is to

become better. This year I have the opportunity of representing every

outstanding professor that teach at Cal Poly Pomona. There are many like me

around the campus and they all deserve this award but this year I was able to

steal it from them. And next year somebody else is going to go ahead and

do that and I promise you that I'm gonna take a look at that person and make sure

that I learned everything that they do very well and I do the same thing.

David Speak - 2018 Provost Award for Service - Duration: 2:33.

When a faculty member joins this university, the job is defined in terms

of a three-legged stool. Everybody has to do research. Everybody has to teach. And

everybody has to do some service. You have to have faculty members actively

engaged in a bunch of business of the university that is not directly research,

that is not directly teaching, but that allows those other two functions to

carry forward competently. As a public institution it's really important for

the state of California to understand that we're giving them good value. And

part of being able to give them good value means that faculty members are out

there serving on school boards or serving as local-- on local advisory

bodies. That they see visibly that the campus is contributing to the health and

the well-being of the communities. My service, much of it, revolves around the

notion of engaging folks in controlling their own lives.

One might say self-governance-- a large part of my work here. Or democratic

institutions when I was a international election observer in Central America. Or

local control as when I was a member of the Claremont School Board. When you feel

good about the service you're doing it's because you can look at what's happening

in the world as a result of the institutions or the processes that

you're serving. Winning the service award is cool. And it's cool in the ordinary

sort of small human ways in which we all like to get a "Good Job" and "Well Done" and

everybody participates in that kind of recognition. That's pretty cool. But it's

also cool because it calls attention to the fact that these are important things

and it's an important part of what the university does and so it serves as an

incentive to other folks who want to know that what they're doing outside

teaching and research is valued by the University.

Social Media Beats TV and Radio For Restaurant Marketing - Duration: 0:42.

We use social media a lot.

Mostly we use Facebook and Instagram.

Between the two of them we get the word out pretty well.

We highlight our events, our music, our food, customers having a good time, and try to get

the customers interacting with each other online, whether it's trivia night or burger

Monday for five dollars, you know we put that out there.

Tipless Structure Not an Option for Virginia Restaurant & Brewery - Duration: 1:01.

When we first started Caboose Brewing Company, the entire restaurant world was a complete

unknown to us.

The first time I realized that servers made a certain minimum wage and they just took

home their tips, I was kind of blown away.

Since then, it's become very obvious that my staff actually enjoys taking home their

tips.

The hourly rates really don't matter so much.

If we were to incorporate something like a tipless structure, our costs would rise significantly

and we would have to charge our guests much more for the food that they get.

We're already in an area where our food is very expensive because of the quality.

The beer is expensive because of the quality.

We feel like we would not be able to raise our rates a whole lot more to justify that

requirement.

Tax Reduction Strategies for High Income Earners - Duration: 2:25.

Today we're going to talk about tax reduction strategies for high income earners, and there

are several that I want to get into.

First of all is retirement plans.

If you have a retirement plan at work, you want to take advantage of it.

But if you're self-employed, there are several plans that you may want to consider, many

of which you have to set up by year end.

Roth conversions are a very big one, because you think about it, if a lot of your savings

is in a retirement account, when you withdraw the money at age 59 and a half, or 60, or

70 and a half, whatever it may be, you'll pay ordinary income taxes on that amount.

If you can move some of that to a Roth IRA and have all of that future income, growth,

principal be tax free, that's a way to mitigate taxes in the future.

Selling inherited real estate is a big one for those that actually inherit real estate,

because you get a step up in basis.

And when you sell the property, there is no current taxation.

Donor advised funds.

This is probably one of the single biggest and best strategies available for high income

people, because it allows you to take your charitable deductions,

maybe bunch them all together.

You just simply put some money into a fund, and the year that you put the money in the

fund, it becomes a tax deduction.

So you might want to do that during high income years, and then you have a fund that you can

manage yourself, and divvy out to charities of your choice as you see fit in future years.

Qualified charitable distributions is another big one if you're over 70 and a half.

There's a way to go ahead and have your charitable deductions coming right out of your IRA,

directly to charity.

It counts as your required minimum distribution, and you don't have to count it as income.

Investing in real estate.

For those that like real estate, this is a great way to save money in taxes

because of depreciation.

Depreciation is just the ability to write off a piece of the property

each and every year.

And that gives you a phantom deduction that allows much of your income to be tax free.

And finally, new for 2018 is the section 199A deduction.

This is where, if you have a small business, or you own rental real estate, you may be

able to deduct up to 20% of the profits on that as a deduction, thereby reducing your

taxes quite a bit.

2 Easy DIY Spring Garlands | DIY Wall Decor Ideas for Spring | DIY Spring Room Decor Ideas - Duration: 4:16.

Hey whats up you guys? My name is Emily and in this video I'm going to show you

how to make these two spring garlands.

Lets get on with the video!

The first garland I'm going to show you how to make is a bunny garland.

What you will need for this DIY is scrapbook or cardstock paper,

scissors, a pencil, cotton balls, a glue gun, string and tape.

The first thing you want to do is to draw or print out a bunny stencil out of some paper and cut it out.

Then you want to trace the stencil onto any colored scrapbook or cardstock paper.

You can also use paper that has a pattern.

After you have traced the template

you can the cut bunnies out

and you can make as many as you want.

Now you can take some cotton balls and if you want you can rip them apart

to make smaller cotton balls

and if you do rip it apart make sure you form it back into a ball.

You can also use pom poms instead but you can't rip those apart.

After you have formed your cotton balls you can glue them onto where the bunnies tails would go.

The last thing you have to do is to tape the bunnies onto the string and hang it onto the wall with some tape.

The last garland I'm going to show you how to make is a flower and a bee garland.

What you will need for this DIY is paper, a pencil, scissors, a marker, a paintbrush, paint, tape and string.

The first thing you want to do is to draw or print out a template of a bee and a flower.

Then you want to trace out as many bees and flowers

that you will need and then you want to cut them all out.

After you get all of your flowers and bees cut out

you want to paint them any color that you want.

I painted the middle of the flowers yellow

and the bees black in yellow.

When the flowers and the bees were dry I took a marker and outlined the flower

and then I drew on a face to the bee and I also outlined the bees wings with a marker.

You can either draw on the outline and the face with a marker or you can just paint it on instead

and you want to do this to all of your flowers and your bees.

The last thing you have to do is to tape the bees

and the flowers onto the string

and hang it onto the wall with some tape.

and that's how you make these garland's. In the comments down below let me know

what you think about these DIYs and which one is your favorite and if you

liked this video give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to see more videos like this.

I will see you in the next video. Bye!
