Symbiosis

By Urmila Ellappan

Zippy had walked a long distance

in the African savannah

to reach a small lake.

He eagerly quenched his thirst

and went to rest

under the cool shade

of a baobab tree.

Zippy tried to fall asleep,

but he felt uncomfortable

and very itchy.

For days,

there had been tiny fleas

all over his body.

He tried to get rid of the fleas

by swishing his tail

from side to side.

He tried to get rid of the fleas

by thumping

his four legs

one by one on the ground.

He even tried thumping

all four legs

at once!

He rubbed his whole body

against the tree trunk.

He tried to get rid

of some fleas

by licking his face

with his long tongue.

But nothing seemed to work!

The fleas just

wouldn't go away!

No swishing or licking,

and no rubbing

and thumping,

could make them leave him.

Finally,

he became so tired and irritated

that he rolled on the ground

with his feet up in the air.

He saw two little birds

perched

on a branch

of the mighty baobab.

They made a lot of noise,

winked at each other

and darted

down.

"Wow, that was something.

Are you O.K., Pick?"

"Sure, Peck, I'm fine!

Ehh- hi, I'm Pick!"

"And I am Peck, hi!"

With a sheepish smile,

Zippy got to his feet.

"Ahem, nice to meet you.

I am Zippy."

"You have such deliciously

tempting fleas on you!"

Pick and Peck

settled down

on Zippy's back.

"Delicious?" groaned Zippy,

"I am

totally bugged by them!

I just can't get them off,

no matter how hard I try."

"We are

very hungry, Zippy,

and we love fleas.

May we eat up all these…

nasty creatures?"

asked Pick and Peck.

"Sure! Be my guests!"

exclaimed Zippy delighted.

The birds began.

They pecked at the fleas

on his face and legs,

they cleaned

Zippy's belly

and cleaned Zippy's back.

The zebra stood still,

letting the birds

eat their fill.

And finally,

they were all happy.

The zebra had been freed

of the annoying fleas

and the two birds

had enjoyed

a splendid meal.

"Thank you very much

for pecking those

nasty fleas

off my body."

"Oh! We must

thank you,

for providing us

with such a flea meal –

free meal."

Animals helping

each other –

as Pick and Peck

helped Zippy -

These Nuts Are Absolutely Incredible for Your Health - Duration: 9:34.

These Nuts Are Absolutely Incredible for Your Health

We all know that nuts and dried fruit are like magic for your health and beauty.

You could say they contain the most nutrients in the smallest package.

As if that weren't enough, they contain vegetable fat, which is super healthy.

In this article, we'll tell you what each nut offers and which you should eat depending on your health issue.

Nuts and seeds, the complete package.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has put nuts on their list of recommended foods in a healthy diet.

Despite this, we usually don't eat them in the right amount or right way, so we don't enjoy all of their benefits.

The problem isn't that we don't eat enough of them… But that we do it wrong.

We like to eat them fried, salted, or covered in sugar like a dessert.

Nuts are healthy if and only if they're eaten raw along with other healthy foods like salads or steamed vegetables.

The daily recommended amount give by the Heart Foundation is about 50 grams.

These little gems are great at treating all kinds of health issues and covering many of your basic needs.

While they don't do miracles all by themselves, they can indeed help in different treatments.

"Check this out too: 7 Reasons Why You Should Eat More Nuts".

Tell me what's wrong and I'll tell you which nut or seed to eat.

There's at least one of them out there to help improve any health issue you may have.

We'll tell you about the most important ones:.

For high cholesterol: almonds, hazelnuts, and walnuts.

All three contain monounsaturated fats that improve your cardiovascular health and clear out fat and cholesterol from your blood.

Consuming 60 grams of a mixture of almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts can reduce your bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by almost 80%.

These nuts also prevent heart disease and balance your blood pressure.

Hazelnuts in particular have been discovered to lower an amino acid called homocysteine, which can damage your artery linings.

In addition, almonds contain flavonoids, which support your immune system.

For constipation: macadamia nuts, walnuts, and pistachios.

When you're unable to go to the bathroom, dried fruits like raisins and apricot preserves are recommended.

That's because both contain a good amount of fiber.

However, these remedies your grandma passed down to you aren't your only options.

It has been proven in multiple studies that pistachios provide 10% of this nutrient, while walnuts provide 6.

5%, and macadamia nuts 5%.

It should also be pointed out that these foods have the ability to reduce your risk of colon cancer.

A handful of any of them is perfect for dealing with constipation.

For weight problems: almonds, hazelnuts, and walnuts.

This is the same combo we used for high cholesterol.

Some people believe that nuts aren't good for obese people, but this isn't true.

When eaten in reasonable portions, they can be great at helping you slim down.

People who eat almonds, hazelnuts, or walnuts regularly are less likely to gain wait and become obese.

This is mainly because they are very filling.

If you have 1/4 cup of nuts, you'll be eating enough calories to keep from getting hungry for several hours.

In addition, they contain very high quality healthy vegetable oils.

For diabetes: Almonds, cashews, pine nuts, and pistachios.

These nuts offer a great amount of minerals (including iron, calcium, and magnesium).

If we focus on just one of them, magnesium, we can say that cashews contain 292 mg in each 100 grams, almonds 270 mg, and pine nuts 251 mg.

It has been proven that magnesium is good for insulin resistance and thus helps prevent diabetes, or keep it from worsening.

As for potassium, pistachios have a very high amount, and a deficiency of this mineral is a risk factor for diabetes.

For degenerative health issues: Almonds and hazelnuts.

Dementia and Alzheimer's disease are two of the most common degenerative diseases.

Nuts in general and almonds and hazelnuts in particular can lower your risk of getting them.

The reason is that they contain a lot of vitamin E, which prevents cognitive deterioration over time.

Almonds have 25.6 mg per 100 grams and hazelnuts 17.5 mg.

For painful periods: pistachios.

If premenstrual syndrome is a real problem for you, if you get very painful periods, or if you get too irritable, pistachios are the nut for you.

They contain a good amount of vitamin B6, which several studies say helps with the depression that comes before your period.

They also help suppress your appetite and keep you from eating emotionally (another typical problem).

Pistachios have 1.

7 mg of vitamin B6 per 100 grams.

For fatigue: almonds.

If you want better performance at work on in sports, if you feel like you fall asleep anywhere and you're having trouble getting things done, almonds can help.

Eat 75 grams a day to regulate your carbohydrate reserves, transportation of oxygen, and metabolism.

As if that weren't enough, they also contain antioxidants.

Calcium loss of the bones: Almonds and pine nuts.

Nuts are a good source of calcium and recommended for vegans or people who don't eat dairy because they're lactose intolerant.

One of the nuts that contains the most of this mineral are almonds (269 mg per 100 grams).

As for pine nuts, they contain a significant amount of zinc (6.

45 mg per 100 grams), a mineral that encourages bone growth and strength.

A handful of both every day and… stronger bones! They're ideal for older people and women after menopause.

Law firm director says they are not liable for failed multi-million rand Ponzi scheme - Duration: 4:51.

Law firm director says they are not liable for failed multi-million rand Ponzi scheme

Law firm director says they are not liable for failed multi-million rand Ponzi scheme.

Director of law firm Garlick and Bousfield, Brian Jennings, says he could have "kicked himself" for trusting colleague Colin Cowan so much that he signed dozens of "letters of undertaking" for what turned out to be a multi-million rand Ponzi scheme.

But‚ he insisted in evidence before Judge Jerome Mnguni in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday‚ that the firm should not be liable for the R100-million in claims by those who invested in Cowan's "bridging finance scheme"‚ saying they should have done their own homework.

The claim before the court is that of Durban businessman Merlin Stols who struck several deals with Cowan‚ the final one being for R7-million (R2-million of which was deposited into the firm's trust account) just prior to Cowan committing suicide in November 2010.

Evidence before the court is that the letters of undertaking were signed by directors of the firm and were on its letterhead.

Stols alleges he was further "comforted" by the fact that another director of the firm and an acquaintance‚ David Ramsay‚ had assured him Cowan's scheme was "all kosher".

Expert evidence has been that in the hundreds of deals‚ there were no borrowers‚ "only lenders paying lenders" and there were no underlying property transactions.

In his evidence‚ Jennings repeatedly stated that Cowan was a "respected elder" whom he trusted implicitly.

"He would come into my office and ask me to sign… I would ask him 'are we fine?' He would assure me we were.

He would pre-empt my questions.

It was like I was being groomed.

"There was never a complaint… his fees were normal‚ his lifestyle was consistent.

"I saw no difficulty in signing the letter of undertaking because‚ in essence‚ if the firm didn't get the proceeds‚ we would not have to pay."   Jennings conceded that apart from the "first time"‚ he had not looked at the documentation or done a "mini audit".

"With the benefit of hindsight‚ I should not have trusted him‚" he said.

But Advocate Spiko Dickson‚ for Stols‚ suggested that Jennings was "just making excuses".

"What you raise is mitigation‚ not a defence." Dickson asked: "Mr Jennings, you are giving me explanations about why you didn't do your job.

All I am asking you is whether you accept you didn't do your job?" Jennings replied: "No.

I don't accept that because my job has to be judged by the circumstances at the time.

I can't divorce myself from my subconscious.

"What was surprising was the lenders didn't know who they were actually lending their money to." Dickson: "Are you serious Mr Jennings? That someone who gets a letter from GB signed by you as a director cannot rely on its contents?" Jennings: "Well he shouldn't just rely on the contents because the letter is to pay out of the proceeds.

the principal debt is not the letter of undertaking‚ it is the loan agreement." Jennings said many of the "investors" had made a lot of money initially.

"If you could unscramble the egg‚ a just situation would be that they should pay the losers.

"The firm did not benefit from the scheme… and it cannot afford to pay even a fraction of the claims.

We were as much victims as everyone else." Dickson: "I am sure all the plaintiffs feel sorry for you." The case is continuing.

Nigeria's Buhari under fire for remarks on rule of law - Duration: 3:36.

Nigeria's Buhari under fire for remarks on rule of law

Nigeria's Buhari under fire for remarks on rule of law.

Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari came under fire on Tuesday from the opposition, lawyers and civil society groups for placing national security above the rule of law.

Buhari, a former military dictator in the 1980s who was elected in 2015 and is seeking re-election in February, said the "rule of law must be subject to the supremacy of the nation's security and national interest".

The 75-year-old made the remarks at the opening of the Nigerian Bar Association's annual conference in Abuja on Sunday.

"Where national security and (the) public interest are threatened or there is a likelihood of their being threatened, the individual rights must take second place, in favour of the greater good of society," he said.

But the main opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) said the rule of law should not be compromised.

"Our national interest is thoroughly embedded, protected, expressed and enforced only under the rule of law.

and there is no (way) how Nigerians can allow an individual to superimpose or override the constitution with his personal whims and impulses," said the party.

The PDP said Buhari should also be made to "answer for the litany of human rights violations in Nigeria, including documented disobedience to court orders, extra-judicial and arbitrary executions, unlawful arrests and political detentions".

Lagos lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa said the rule of law was sacrosanct.

"The rule of law limits and interposes upon the rule of self all forms of arbitrariness and is thus preferable to the whims and caprices of individuals," he said, warning that a stance like Buhari's should be avoided, particularly in the light of February's election." Buhari's remarks also drew flak from the Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (Caser) lobby group.

"President Muhammadu Buhari cannot use national security or national interest to justify his government's disobedience to orders of court directing it to either grant bail to specific citizens or commanding it to perform specific acts," it said.

Buhari has been accused of using his anti-graft crusade to crack down on perceived political opponents.

Many political figures, including former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki are languishing behind bars despite several court orders for their release.
