What is socialism? (English) - Duration: 5:59.
What is socialism?
When we talk about socialism
we usually think of countries like the Soviet Union
North Korea as well as the early People's Republic of China
These socialist states claim that
they are influenced by Karl Marx
Politically, they are run by one-party dictatorships
The communist parties
monopolize the political and military power
They oppress and imprison dissenters by police and agents
The freedom of speech and association of people are suppressed
Economically
these socialist states adopt central planning
which means that most of the country's resources
are owned by the government
The government makes plans
to command different branches to produce various goods
The distribution of goods is not determined by market prices
but rather by central planning
Let's look at the Soviet Union during the 1920s
The heavy industries were far behind
that of other western countries
such as the United States
Therefore, the Soviet Union used central planning
to concentrate most of its human and material resources
on developing heavy industries
without regard to profit
It resulted in a rapid increase of
the productive power of heavy industries
Take steel output as an example
In 1920
the national output was merely 160 thousand tones
By 1938
it had increased immensely to 18 million tones
112 times what it was 18 years before
However
the weakness of central planning is that
the distribution of resources is inefficient
The central plan of a government may be flawed
Incompetent staff are retained
redundant government branches are allowed to stay
No matter whether you are hardworking or lazy
you receive similar rewards
This eventually leads to collective laziness of the whole society
In fact
the late Soviet Union was seriously bothered
by the collective laziness of people
which slowed down its economic growth
However
does Marx really propose
one-party dictatorship and central planning?
We have to first understand that
almost all of Marx's writings
are focused on criticizing capitalism
These critiques can be found in his famous works
such as the Communist Manifesto and Capital
But what should a socialist state be?
On this point, Marx is quite ambiguous.
What kind of political institutions would Marx support?
We can predict his political view from one of his writings
The Civil War in France
in which he gives high praise to the Paris Commune
In 1871
France lost the war with Prussia
The people in Paris started an uprising and occupied Paris
The Paris Commune was formed
It was short-lived
and was soon destroyed by the French government
Nevertheless
it enjoyed a very high status in the history of socialism
for it represents a valuable attempt
to realize the ideal of self-government in a modern society
In the Paris Commune
all the political decisions were made collectively
by the Council members
These Council members were elected
by people by universal suffrage
The political power was dispersed and decentralized
The Council members were always
accountable to the people and were subject
in theory
to immediate recall by their electors
The factories were also transformed into cooperatives
Workers autonomously determined the content of their work
and the direction of their factories
In brief
compared with the top-down systems
such as one-party dictatorship and central planning
Marx prefers the bottom-up systems in which
the government and companies are collectively
ruled by the people
But why does socialism now seem to become
what we saw in the Soviet Union?
Here we have to introduce Vladimir Lenin
a 20th century Russian socialist revolutionist
also the father of the Soviet Union
According to the prediction of Marx
the socialist revolution should happen
in the most mature capitalist countries
In these developed capitalist countries
there is an enormous working class
and the socialist revolutionists can assemble them
to overthrow capitalism
However
what can socialist revolutionists do
in backward countries?
Before the Soviet Union was formed
Russia was a rural country
that fell behind industrial countries
such as England
There were few industrial workers in Russia
How could revolutionists assemble
enough people for revolution?
Even if the revolution is successful
how can a loosely organized socialist state
resist the attack of other capitalist countries?
Therefore, Lenin argued
the socialist revolution should be led by
a small group of professional revolutionists
These revolutionists should form a vanguard party
which represents the will of the people
and leads the people to fight
After the success of the revolution
in order to resist the attack of hostile capitalist states
the new socialist state should be dictated by the vanguard party
The vanguard party should also
educate the people and reform the society
in a top-down way
Dissenters should be oppressed ruthlessly
From the perspective of Lenin
people may be corrupted by the ideology of capitalism
They may not be reliable in the socialist cause
Only the vanguard party can truly
represent the interests of the people
This top-down approach of ruling gradually becomes
one-party dictatorship and central planning
Although Lenin reflected on his view in his later years
it undoubtedly greatly influenced
the Soviet Union in Stalin's age
as well as the early PRC ruled by Mao Zedong
Now, do you think Marx would agree with
the socialist state of Lenin, Stalin and Mao?
If Marx has to construct a socialist state today
what kind of state do you think he would establish?

What is Rural by Design? Why it's important to YOU Thompson's Station! - Duration: 3:20.
Let's let's talk about world by design. What does that mean? Why is that important to anybody?
Look at Thompson station when we incorporated back in 1990. That was one of the fundamental
Tenets of the incorporation is that they the citizens living here wanted to maintain the rural
nature of the community but they are also understood pragmatically that growth is going to happen
I don't think any of us could have imagined that Williamson County would see the level of growth that we've
Become accustomed to here in the last seven or eight years post recession and it shows no sign of abating
but this this primary
ethos of rural by design
How do you create a small world-class town that maintains its vibe as a as a small town that yet is
Next all the cool amenities at Greater Nashville offers. How do you balance that? So
The founding citizens of Thompson's Station
started looking at a plan based on
consciously
maintaining the rural nature while
also
Embracing the fact that infrastructure would have to be provided
and so this is one of those classic situations where the the
residents came together and said
Okay, if we're gonna be a real town if you will we have to provide sewer if we're real town
We have to provide other services we have to take care of the roads. We have to think about schools
We have to think about energy. We have to think about water we have to think about fire safety
You have to think about personal safety. It's all these are part of the the mix of
building a community and so
One of the things that has come out of our planning over the last several years of which I'm proud to be a part of
Is that we are finding triple bottom line wins to?
the
Investments that are required so we can buy Park Land can the parkland also be used for something else besides parkland
Can it be used perhaps someday...
for solar fields if we're going to put in additional drip fields for our sewer
Can we get energy production in a sustainable fashion using solar panels above the drip fields?
there's cool things that Thompson's Station can brace as a world class community that's looking abroad for solutions and
Acknowledging their scarce resources. And so what you find in the promise of Thompson station is everybody says we love the green space
We love being this Hamlet
We love being this oasis in the middle of all this craziness that it's going along with the growth in noble, Tennessee
So that's big part of our brand and so as we look at the values that drive this community. It's around sustainability
It's about being progressive but it's also about keeping afoot in the past and acknowledging the wonderful history whether it's agrarian
Whether it's the history, whether it's the viewsheds in the green space, whether it's the natural resources
all this goes into this idea of rural by design, but also
creating a community that when you can live anywhere in the world, why do you choose Thompson's Station? We're competing on the world stage for
residents, business investors and quality of life unlike any other

Keeping an Eye on Your Hearing is Important, Too: When Was Your Last Checkup?
Getting regular hearing checkups is key to enjoying a good quality of life.
After all, your hearing is a basic, vital part of connecting with the world around you.
Unfortunately, for some reason people don't think about this subject very often.
Something as simple as getting your ears checked once a year will ensure that any anomaly can be treated on time.

Don't forget that hearing loss is one of the most common problems and also one of the most neglected.
We invite you to make some changes and take care of your hearing a little better.
Why you should get a checkup.
"Find out What Your Ears Say About You".
As we indicated above, it's recommended to get a hearing checkup once a year.
It doesn't matter if you've noticed an issue or not or if you think you hear perfectly.
It's essential to be aware of it, and here's why:.
Once a year won't hurt, especially if you're over 50.
Reduced quality of hearing happens almost imperceptibly, but gives its first hints after 50.
You should know that early detection of any hearing problem may be vital to getting it treated in time.
A deterioration in your hearing ability can be treated in many different ways, depending on the individual.
Most of us see a dentist or eye doctor regularly.
We know it's important.
But more than half of the over-50 population hasn't gotten an ear checkup.
In fact, hearing loss is the third most common health issue after arthritis and hypertension.
One in every six people has a problem.
The facts are surprising.
About 30% of men and 20% of women in Europe have serious enough hearing loss that their quality of life is impaired.
Around 71 million adults between 18 and 80 years old have a hearing loss of more than 25 dB.
This is the threshold the World Health Organization (WHO) has established for hearing disability.
As for North America, the data also gives a clear picture of the evidence: about 35 million people have hearing deficits.
Developing countries have higher numbers for understandable reasons: a lack of health care, infection, trouble getting access to hearing checkups, etc.
"Check this out, too: What's Causing that Ringing in Your Ears? Treat it Naturally!".
How can I find out if I have a hearing problem?.
Just like you've already heard, it's best to not wait until you notice a problem before getting a checkup.
However, you should also get one if you ever experience any of the following issues:.
You keep turning the volume up.
Sometimes (or often), you have to ask people to repeat themselves because you didn't understand the first time.
Y have trouble following conversations because you miss words.
People you talk to say you speak loudly.
It's hard to talk on the phone sometimes because you don't hear the words clearly.
If these situations sound familiar, don't wait: let a hearing specialist give you some tests to evaluate you.
It doesn't cost anything and it'll do a lot: it will "connect" you to life again and all its sounds.
