You arrive to Durham.
You pull onto East Campus.
It's move-in day.
You're probably excited.
But you might be nervous, too.
I can assure you that your transition to Duke
will be a breeze thanks to your FAC.
Wait, what's a FAC?
Let's back up and clear all of this up.
FAC stands for First-year Advisory Counselor.
These 250 Duke student leaders were
chosen to help you first-year students acclimate to college
life and, most importantly, your new home at Duke University
and in the Durham community.
Each FAC is a mentor, leader, and friend
to six to eight incoming students
during Orientation Week.
You'll hear from your FAC before you
arrive on campus for move-in.
And your FACs are so excited to meet you.
FACs wear a lot of hats as they help
you adjust to college life.
Let's delve into the top five roles
FACs will play during Orientation Week and beyond.
Number 1, FACs are the official greeters of Duke University.
On move-in day, the FACs of each residence hall
are present as each of the first-years arrive.
And as a way of welcoming you and your family,
they physically move in all of the luggage
that each family brings for their student.
From the first moment you arrive, your FACs
demonstrate a larger sense of community and service
that Duke University strives for.
How cool is that?
You don't even have to lift a finger.
Number 2, FACs are your mentors.
Since your groups during O Week will be small,
your FACs will really get a chance
to know you, your goals, and even your worries.
Don't be afraid to share your thoughts and feelings
with them.
Remember, they were in your shoes not too long ago.
Number 3, FACs are discussion leaders.
Through a series of what we call FAC chats,
your FAC will facilitate discussions
about topics such as personal wellness and your summer
reading book, your first intellectual experience
on campus.
How exciting is that?
Number 4, FACs are Duke experts.
Need to know how to navigate from East Campus
to West Campus?
Where's the career center?
How about the best meal at the marketplace?
Your FAC can answer all of these questions and more,
utilizing previous campus experience
and information they've learned through their FAC training.
And if they don't know the answer to your question,
they could point you to the right person to help you out.
And number 5, FACs are campus connectors.
That's right.
Their job doesn't end with O Week.
The FACs will serve as a resource and friend
to their first-years throughout the fall semester.
So don't hesitate to reach out.
See?
I told you your transition to Duke
would be a breeze with the help of your FAC.
See you soon, Blue Devils.
