Waching daily Dec 27 2017

Shane: Hey, everyone.

Shane Ireland here.

Welcome to another Tasting Notes video.

After a lot of contemplation and smoking, heavily smoking in the name of research, I've

come up with my five blends for my winter rotation.

I started thinking about this a couple weeks back.

It's been cooling down here even more in the South, Southeast, and this is the time of

year where I need ... There's a few things that I realized I need.

One is that I still love my first pipe of the day in the car on the way to work and

part of that, for me, is being able to crack the window down too.

Obviously, when it's colder that means that there's colder air, so yes, I'm bundled up

with a scarf and a jacket, but I also have a nice pipe warming me up too.

So, in the morning, in the evenings, when you have this brisk air, you're taking a walk

around, maybe you're sitting on your porch, maybe you're in your car with the windows

cracked, you need a blend that's going to stand up well to being smoked outdoors.

Something that's really mild might seem thin when you're smoking outside and when you're

smoking outside in a low temperature.

So you need something that's going to hold up well outdoors.

You need something, if you're anything like me, that's going to hold up well when being

paired with a higher proof bourbon or a smoky scotch.

The kind of things that I am interested in in drinking this time of year.

Even like a black coffee or a strong tea.

Those are bold, big flavors and you need a tobacco that's going to stand up to that.

The first one that I picked is a stout blend made in Kendal by Gawith & Hoggarth.

It's Dark Bird's Eye.

Dark Bird's Eye is a shag.

It packs really easily.

It burns really easily.

It's a low maintenance tobacco.

Perfect for just throwing in a tobacco pouch that you're carrying around with you.

There's no need to rub out the flake or fold and stuff or any of that kind of thing.

Any size pipe, you just pull a clump out of your tobacco pouch, load it up, and go.

It burns really well, like I said, and it is strong, yet smooth.

There's a fair amount of complexity.

Some light floral notes, having been made in Kendal.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, in my opinion, if Sherlock Holmes were around

for real, this is the tobacco he would be smoking.

It's really well-suited to these colder months.

The second blend in my winter rotation this year is G.L. Pease Quiet Nights.

Quiet Nights is a really special blend.

It is an English blend and I think this time of year is a time that a lot of pipe smokers

look forward to because it's just perfect for smoking heavier English blends.

Quiet Nights can technically probably be considered a Scottish mixture because it does have a

healthy pinch of Acadian Perique.

Really, really complex.

Really rich.

It's an intriguing blend that definitely will keep your attention.

Again, it will hold up really well in the colder weather or paired with a nice smoky

scotch, for example.

This one, to me, is all about the Perique.

I think there's a pretty healthy dose in there and it adds so much complexity and it really

sets off this sort of creamy sweet character in the Latakia that is also woody.

So you have this really nice balance between the sweet and the spicy with this one.

I think the Orientals are definitely there, definitely felt, but they're subtle and subdued.

They don't steal the show, in my opinion.

I think they create a really nice backdrop for these other condimental leafs to kind

of play off of each other.

At the risk of controversy, I will say that for smokers who either would love to get their

hands on Penzance to try it for the first time, or who smoke Penzance and can't keep

enough on hand, do yourself a favor and try Quiet Nights.

There's a lot of tobacco reviews on Tobaccoreviews.com where people make this comparison.

Obviously, they're not identical.

For me they ring the same bell and in fact, I think Quiet Nights is a little more full,

which makes it more interesting to me, and it's a little more complex as well.

So, sorry to all the Penzance fans, but Quiet Nights is my pick.

Even though this time of year I definitely like to get back into some Latakia blends,

I look for some really stout stuff that maybe features some dark Burley, some dark fire-cured

stuff.

However, I am a dedicated Virginia smoker, dedicated Virginia Perique smoker, and I certainly

can't be without one nice Virginia flake in my rotation.

So, number three on my list is Dunhill's Dark Flake.

The reason that I selected it is that there's a lot of these great flavors that actually

remind me of a nice bourbon.

This time of year, I love the brown sugar and these warm spices like a little cinnamon,

a little clove.

There's a charred oak note to this.

It's really woody, but in a specific, like, charred oak kind of way.

It's bready.

It's rich.

It's not a terribly strong flake.

It's pretty middle-of-the-road in terms of strength, but I think it is full-flavored.

It really fits in well this time of year.

If you're anything like me and you want to have a Virginia or a Virginia Perique in your

rotation during these colder months, Dunhill Dark Flake is the perfect choice.

It stands up well to the cold weather and all that good stuff, just like all the other

blends on my list, but it also is a nice all-day smoke, so it's not something that's going

to fatigue your palate.

It's interesting.

It's complex.

It has a lot of warm, what I like to call these warm and fuzzy flavors.

Right?

Like bread and wood and warm spices and brown sugar.

It's balanced between the sweetness and the tang really well.

So, for me, this is my all-day Virginia for the winter months.

My number four blend for my winter rotation this year is Drucquer & Sons Blairgowrie.

After making my way through the entire Drucquer's line, Blairgowrie is still where I ended up

in terms of, like, my pick of the whole line.

It's my favorite tobacco that they make.

Part of it is because I tend to favor English blends that have a Turkish forward character

and Blairgowrie definitely has that.

It's really balanced.

It's creamy sweet Latakia as opposed to, like, smoky, woody Latakia.

At least that's what I get.

Also, there's some really lovely earthy and musty tones.

There's a bit of Perique in here that adds some intrigue and some complexity and contributes

to those, like, earth and even mushroom kind of notes.

I'm returning to it now after several months of smoking lighter stuff and it's fantastic.

It's piquant.

It's a really interesting, complex ... It's kind of on the other side of the spectrum

of English blends, from Quiet Nights, which is my number two blend, so basically, I just

have all my bases covered here.

Something that's really rich and really dark and really full, and something that's a little

more nutty and, you know, a little more nutty, a little more creamy sweet, Turkish forward,

earthy, musty.

This would be my aperitif, whereas Quiet Nights would be how I close out my evening.

Finally, my number five blend for my winter rotation this year is probably what I would

consider the strongest of the blends that I've picked, Peterson's Irish Flake.

Peterson's Irish Flake has a loyal following already.

If you ever tried it, chances are you dig it, unless you are in the camp that is adverse

to high levels of nicotine.

It's a really interesting flake.

Dark, moist, very strong.

There's an interesting floral character to it.

It's bold and it's spicy.

This is the one that I would pick if I was in the situation where, you know, maybe a

small pipe and a small amount of time and I wanted to get a bang for my buck out of

it.

You know.

So, if you've got a holiday company party, you can only sneak away and have a quick smoke

and relax a little bit and get some quiet time to yourself, this is a blend you want

to grab.

Similarly, if you're camping this time of year, you want something that you can pack

maybe, like, in the fold and stuff, or not fully rubbed out.

It's going to burn nice and slow and cool out in the wind, out in the elements.

This, for me, is a quintessential winter blend.

It is strong, bold, spicy, interesting, and I can't be without it this time of year.

I think, you know, we're fast approaching Christmas.

I think for a lot of us it can be a stressful time of year, a time when we definitely turn

to our pipes for relaxation and enjoyment and contemplation and all that good stuff.

I hope you enjoyed this.

I hope that some of these blends will find their way into your winter rotation, and I

will also say Happy Holidays to everybody out there.

See you next time.

A Rose for Carl - An Amazingly Horrific Love Story - Duration: 5:46.

Born in Dresden, Germany in 1877, Carl Tanzler claimed to have descended from aristocratic

stock.

Fanciful even as a child, in later years he recounted a story of being visited in his

youth by a long-dead ancestor, Countess Anna Constantina von Cosel, who gave him a vision

of a beautiful, dark-haired woman whom she said was his one, true love.

As a young man he either forgot the vision, made the whole story up later in life, or

decided to settle because in or about 1920 he married a different woman.

Together (although in stages), they immigrated to the U.S. with their kids and settled in

Zephyrhillis, Florida in 1926.

Perhaps realizing he couldn't avoid his fate, by 1927, Carl had left Zephyrhillis

(though they didn't divorce), changed his name to Carl von Cosel and made a new home

in Key West, Florida, where he found work as an x-ray technician at the U.S. Marine

Hospital.

A few years later, in 1930, a young, beautiful dark-haired woman went to the hospital for

treatment of a lung condition that was eventually diagnosed as tuberculosis.

As x-rays were required, Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos, known as Helen, ran into Carl who

was awestruck – he claimed to have instantly recognized her as the woman of his childhood

dream.

elanaAlthough it's not clear if Carl ever told Helen about his supernatural vision,

he was soon professing his love for the young woman and showering her with jewelry and clothing.

And, as she continued to decline due to her illness, when he offered to make house calls

to treat her, the help was eagerly accepted.

More enthusiastic than educated, however, Carl's "remedies" were little more than

additional x-rays and strange concoctions.

Despite his and the actual doctors' best efforts, Helen died on October 25, 1931.

Carl's offer to pay for her funeral was gratefully accepted by her family, and rather

than settling for a simple grave, he had a sizeable mausoleum built.

In gratitude, Helen's mother gave Carl some of Helen's hair as a memento – a decision

the family later regretted.

tombVisiting her crypt in Key West Cemetery nearly every night for the next year and a

half, Carl later claimed that Helen's spirit visited him and asked him to get her out of

the tomb.

Obliging, in April 1933 he crept into the cemetery (presumably after dark) with a small

wagon and secretly removed her body and took her back to his home.

With the passage of so much time, Dead-Helen must have been quite a sight.

To reverse the effects of time (and decay), Carl employed a number of techniques, including

re-attaching her bones with wire and coat hangers and filling her now deflated torso

with rags to get her back to the right proportions.

Over these structural supports, Carl made a kind of skin out of silk, wax and plaster

of Paris, put glass eyes in her sockets and fashioned a wig for her from the hair her

mother had given him.

Carl then dressed her in style, including jewelry, stockings and gloves.

To prevent any further decay and disguise the smell, Carl also employed a fair bit of

preservatives as well as disinfectants and perfumes.

airshipNot content to only be with Dead-Helen, Carl also hatched a plan to create a plane

to carry her body, as he put it, "high into the stratosphere, so that radiation from outer

space could penetrate Elena's tissues and restore life to her somnolent form."

Seven years later, Dead-Helen's sister, Florinda, after hearing some strange rumors

of Carl's extracurricular activities, including someone spotting through a window Carl dancing

with a life-sized "doll", arrived at his home, demanding to see the doll.

What she discovered was that it was no effigy of her sister at all, but the carefully preserved

remains of Helen.

The authorities were immediately notified and Carl was arrested, but as the statute

of limitations for grave robbing had already ran, the charges were dropped.

Later investigations revealed a bit of Carl and Dead-Helen's "life" together, which

included dancing and spending each night lying in bed together.

It's not clear if Carl engaged in necrophilia; while some researchers claim that a paper

tube had been inserted in Dead-Helen's vaginal cavity, others claim that as this "evidence"

was only revealed in 1972, it was not credible.

Even if true, this also doesn't say one way or the other whether he had intercourse

with the corpse- a paper-tube being presumably… uncomfortable…

corpseMoving on, as if Carl's desecration of Helen's corpse wasn't enough, after

the authorities were finished with the body, Dead-Helen was put on public display in a

local funeral home – where more than 6,000 people came to gape at her.

She was finally laid to rest in 1940 in a secret location and an unmarked grave.

Carl was able to keep a death mask he had made of Helen (or Dead-Helen, it's not clear)

and he attached this to a life-sized sculpture he had fashioned in her image.

He returned to Zephyrhillis where his wife (they had never divorced) apparently helped

to support him, although they lived separately.

His autobiography, Fantastic Adventures, was published in 1947, and he became a U.S. citizen

in 1950.

Dying at home in 1952, Carl was supposedly found with his arms wrapped around a Helen

doppelganger.

However, the accuracy of this report isn't clear and accounts from otherwise reputable

sources further differ as to whether this was the death-mask-sculpture Helen or if it

was actually Dead-Helen, whom he had secretly re-acquired somehow.

Man Utd urged to make swoop for Alexis Sanchez because of Robin van Persie - Duration: 2:45.

Man Utd urged to make swoop for Alexis Sanchez because of Robin van Persie

The former Republic of Ireland star believes Sanchez has the potential to emulate Robin van Persie's successful switch to Old Trafford.

Sanchez is expected to leave Arsenal either next month or at the end of the season as he will be a free agent in the summer.  Arsene Wenger has maintained that he doesn't expect the Chile international to leave in January, but they may be forced to cash in with the prospect of losing him for nothing.

Manchester City are the heavy favourites to sign him and are expected to return with another bid next month after failing to complete a deal before the start of the season.

I think United should try to snatch Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal Tony Cascarino. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been linked but Pep Guardiola's side seem to be leading the charge.

However, Jose Mourinho came out yesterday with an outburst claiming United haven't spent enough to challenge for the title, despite bringing in £300million worth of talent since arriving at Old Trafford.

And Cascarino insists Sanchez would be the ideal signing to kickstart United's league campaign.  "Lingard's success is symbolic of why United will finish second, or even third, and Manchester City will cruise to the title," Cascarino told The Times.

"Look at Sergio Agüero — he would walk into United's team and yet he often finds himself on the bench under Pep Guardiola.

"I think United should try to snatch Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal.  "They managed it with Robin van Persie, and Mourinho would be able to offer him assured starts, whereas he might face more competition at City." .

Akayed Ullah Charged With Terrorism And Explosives Charges For The Detonation Of A Bomb In NYC - Duration: 20:59.

Good evening. My name is

Joon Kim. I'm the Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of

New York. Yesterday afternoon, a man consumed

by hate, and a twisted ideology,

attacked our country, and our city. Using

a rented Home Depot truck as his weapon

of terror, the man sped down Westside highway,

and then intentionally plowed his truck into a pedestrian walkway

and bicycle path, hitting and running over

people who were simply trying to enjoy

a sunny afternoon in New York City.

He killed 8 innocent human beings,

and injured at least a dozen other people.

That man, as alleged in the complaint filed today,

was Sayfullo Saipov.

Today, thanks to the incredible work by the FBI,

the NYPD, the Joint Terrorism Task Force,

and law enforcement in the city, and around the country,

just about 24 hours after Saipov's

attack, we now have him charged with Federal crimes

of terrorism. The complaint filed today,

charges Saipov with two counts.

First, material support of a terrorist organization;

that being ISIS, and 2nd, a Federal charge of

violence and destruction of a motor vehicle, with

willful disregard for the safety of human life, that resulted

in multiple deaths. As the complaint alleges,

after speeding through the walkway and

bicycle paths, running over and killing people,

Saipov crashed his truck into a school bus carrying children,

then he got out, yelled "allahu akbar" -

meaning, "God is great" - brandishing

2 weapons which turned out to be a paintball gun, and

a pellet gun. He was ultimately stopped by

a brave police officer (Ryan Nash), who confronted him,

and shot him in the abdomen. In the short time

since this attack, as alleged in the complaint,

we have developed evidence establishing that Saipov committed

this attack in support of ISIS.

That evidence is laid out in the complaint, but it includes the following:

a note that was recovered just outside the truck

that read in part, "No God but God",

and Muhammed is his prophet, and Islamic

supplication, "It will endure" - a phrase

commonly used to refer to ISIS. Also,

a search of cellphones found in a bag that he was carrying -

a search conducted pursuant to court authorized wire taps -

revealed thousands of ISIS related images,

and 90 videos - about 90 videos depicting

among other things, ISIS fighters killing prisoners

by running over them with a tank, beheading them,

and shooting them in the face.

In mirandized interview statements with law enforcement last night,

and today, Saipov allegedly admitted that he was

inspired to commit the attack by the ISIS videos he watched,

and had been planning this attack for 2 months.

He also admitted that he had rented a truck on October

22nd, in practice - to practice the turns

he would make on his Halloween - Halloween day attack.

As I mentioned, it is an - it is incredible

investigative work that has allowed us to bring these charges so soon

after the attacks. I want to thank all the law enforcement,

and citizens who responded to this attack in the way

New Yorkers do. In particular, I want to thank Officer

Ryan Nash for his selfless bravery. I want to thank

the FBI, represented here today by Bill Sweeny,

Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office.

Their work in this case, as in all terrorism matters that we've worked with them on,

has been extraordinary. I also want to thank the

NYPD, represented here today by First Deputy Commissioner

Benjamin Tucker, and Deputy John Miller.

Their leadership - and that of Commissioner O'Neil -

over the greatest police force in the world, has helped

keep our city safe. And in the wake of yesterday's attacks,

the NYPD has kept our citizens reassured, and

continuing to live our lives. Finally, I want to thank

the terrorism prosecutors and investigators in my Office

who jumped on this immediately, and haven't gotten any sleep

since: AUSAs Andrew Beaty, Amanda

Houle, Matthew Laroche, who are all - who are not here because

they're in court at the presentment, and Investigators Kevin Song,

and George Corey, as well as the Supervisors of our Terrorism &

International Narcotics Unit who are here with me, Sean Buckley and Ilan Graff.

The folks in that unit working with the FBI, the

NYPD, and the JTTF, have a long and unblemished

track record of successfully investigating and prosecuting

domestic and international terrorists, whether it's the Chelsea

bomber just convicted a few weeks ago on all counts

who'll be serving live - mandatory life in prison,

or the other terrorist convicted in our court house

just down the street in the last few years alone. That list

includes the recent convictions by this Office after the

trial of Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, Osama Bin Laden's

son-in-law, Abu Hamza, the United Kingdom based radical

cleric, Ahmed El Gammal, the home-grown

ISIS supporter, and Khalid Al Fawwaz,

one of Al - one of Al Qaeda's Embassy defendants. It is an amazing record

of success. Of the 8

innocent people Saipov allegedly killed yesterday,

2 were Americans, and the rest were foreigners

visiting New York City. It has been reported

that 5 of the victims were childhood friends from Argentina,

celebrating a high school reunion.

Those Argentinian men came here like the millions of

other - other visitors, to see the sites, and spend some time

in the greatest city on Earth. For the

same reasons that millions visit this city, and

find it so special, alleged terrorists like Saipov view

the city as a prime target for their hate-filled crimes.

But the thing is, for the alleged terrorists like Saipov,

they will find in New York City something else; justice.

They will find - and have found - that law

enforcement, and everyday people in this city, are not afraid of their evil.

They see through their false, hateful rhetoric,

and are committed to putting - bring them to justice.

And that is what we intend to do with Sayfullo Saipov.

I'd like to bring to the stand now, um, Bill Sweeny, assistant Director in Charge

of the FBI. (Bill) Thanks Joon.

Good evening. For the past 24 hours, hundreds of

personnel from the Joint Terrorism Task Force - both on this side of the river, and

in New Jersey - have been working around the clock developing and tracking leads,

and executing searches, as we dig deeper into the life and motivations

of Saipov. The charges announced this evening while significant,

should be taken as no indication that our work here is over.

We will continue to employ all investigative techniques

necessary to fully understand his social network, and unearth his motivations.

Rest assured, we will not stop until every last

lead has been covered. I do have one recent update I'd like to make

you aware of. Uh, earlier as we came in this, this evening.

We were seeking information about an individual. Many of you in this room

received that alert. We are no longer seeking that individual.

We believed he had information related to yesterday, but we

are not looking for that individual any longer. I would encourage

anybody who believes they knew Mr. Saipov, or

has information about yesterday, to proactively contact law

enforcement. A reminder to the public: the tip-line is 1 (800)

CALL FBI, with information that may help us in

any way. We also have a link set up where you can upload any photos,

any videos you may think are relevant. That link is,

FBI.gov/nyctribeca. The NYPD

also has their tip-line set up at 1(800)

577-TIPS. Following the Chelsea

attacks in September of last year, I highlighted the importance of an engaged

public. Today is no different. I cannot overstate

the critical role the public plays in combatting these threats.

Please remain engaged, be aware, and immediately report suspicious activity

to the authorities. In closing, I'd like to thank the partners,

especially the hundreds of men and women working on the JTTF, represented by

at least 50 agencies on this side of the river alone. Your

work has been exceptional. I'd like to thank the U.S. Attorney's Office's junior team,

Ben, Commissioner O'Neil, John Miller, and Fire Commissioner, Dan Nigro, and

George Beach from the State Police. The work you men and women have done has

been absolutely extraordinary. Thank you.

(Joon) Thanks Bill. Uh, now I'd like to bring to the - uh, to the podium, First Deputy

Commissioner Benjamin Tucker.

(Benjamin) Good evening. Uh, today's announcement

of an indictment…of Sayfullo

Saipov on Federal charges, sends

the strongest message to those who seek to commit acts

of terror in our country. These swift

and decisive charges demonstrate

the resolve of our local and Federal law enforcement, whose

worked so closely - who work so closely to both prevent

terror, as well as bring those who commit acts of

terror, to justice. The NYPD wishes

to thank our close law enforcement partners in the FBI, especially

FBI Assistant Director Bill Sweeny,

and our Federal prosecutors in the Southern District, led by

Acting Assistant U.S. Attorney - United States Attorney,

uh, for the Southern District, Joon Kim.

(Joon) Thank you (stutters) Deputy Commissioner. Um, I'll take a few questions.

(Aside) to, to clarify, that person you're no longer looking for; is that Mr.

(unintelligible)? (Bill) Uh, we are no longer looking for the person. The information

went out about - uh, that's all I want to say. There's no reason for me to, uh, seek a

name anymore. We have, uh, found him, and we'll leave it at that.

(Aside) the complaint states that you believe

he started planning this attack a year ago. Do you believe there was another attack

that he might have planned before that?

(Joon) uh, I believe the complaint says that he, uh, began, uh,

planning the attack 2 months ago, uh, but - well, I'm not gonna go beyond

what's in the complaint. (Aside) The complaint says that chose

Halloween because (unintelligible). Any indication from him why he

chose that spot, other than something that would've made him even more

prevalent? (Joon) Um…not gonna get into any other statements that he made,

other than what's, uh, set forth in the complaint, but the complaint does, uh,

include an admission that he had, uh, done a practice run

on October 22nd, uh, with his truck. So,

beyond what's in the complaint for now, uh, I'm not gonna go

into other statements he may have, he may have made. (Aside) (unintelligible).

(Aside) Joon, (unintelligible). 2 charges currently charged: either of them

death eligible? And do you expect the Government to authorize your Office to seek

the death penalty? (Joon) Mm hmm. Um, the 2nd charge is death eligible.

(Aside) By the Department? (Joon) Correct. Um, and the, uh, material support

charge is - life is the maximum. Um,

as you know, um, the process by which - uh, whether

the Department decides, uh, to seek the death penalty or not,

is - uh, goes through a process in the Department. Uh, uh, it's also

worth noting that this is a complaint. Um, at some point, uh,

we will be indicting, uh, Mr. Saipov, and that, uh -

as we know, we're 24 hours away from the attack. The investigation

is very active and ongoing, um, and the indictment,

uh, you know, we will see what counts, uh, are charged

ultimately in the indictment, and some of them may be death eligible,

some of them may have life manage - uh, life in prison

as the maximum. But the process by which the determination is made

for counts that do have life - uh, death as a, uh, maximum

penalty. Uh, that goes through the process. Yes.

(Aside) Um, is it possible that he originally intended to hit

people on the Brooklyn Bridge? Does it mention that in any

of the complaints? (Joon) Um…

(Aside) Or a walkway? (Joon) Beyond what's in the complaint, and

his statements, I don't - I'm not - I don't think there's anything else that I can get

into. (Aside) The White House says (unintelligible), they've proven (unintelligible)

enemy combatant. Is it possible that it could be sent to (unintelligible)? Is there

another process that it's considered that way? (Joon) Uh,

as I understand, the determination of, um, someone being

declared an enemy combatant, is one that gets made, uh, way above

my pay grade. Um, we are - uh, this is an Office of Federal

prosecutors. Uh, there was a Federal - a number of Federal crimes

committed - as set forth in the complaint - that we were able to prove,

and we brought the charges. And we intend, uh, to proceed with them, whether or

not someone will be designated as an enemy combatant, or not. That's a determination that

will be made elsewhere. (Aside) what will happen after the police charges first,

eventually? (Joon) I believe in the history - if you look through precedence - um, uh,

there can be Federal charges in place, and then someone can

be declared, uh, an enemy combatant. But, um, uh,

as I said, those are determinations that other people make. Yes.

(Aside) The 90 videos, the photos that were on the cell phones: was that on his person,

or did you get that from his home in New Jersey? (Joon) I believe the complaint

alleges that the 2 - the cell phones that we obtained a search warrant for, and that had

these images, were in a bag that he was allegedly carrying at the time

of his attack. (Aside) at the time of his (unintelligible)? (Joon) Correct. (Aside) And Commissioner, when the,

the videos, photos - I mean, what you've seen as far as the social media

channels, and next to reports, is this a case where this is another guy who

radicalized himself domestically in this country since he was here

since 2010? (Benjamin) Uh, we

don't know his path of radicalization yet. Uh, the

exploitation of these telephones pursuant to search warrants, um,

is a process because of the volume of material in there that is still in progress,

and will go on for a while. Uh, I think if you

examine, uh, the component pieces of his attack:

obtaining the vehicle, as outlined in the complaint, uh, testing

the vehicle, uh, for the high-speed attack, learning to use it properly,

uh, having secondary weapons inside, uh,

multiple knives, um, and, uh, and trying to achieve

maximum lethality - uh, certainly is indicative,

along with the amount of material in his telephone, that he was

a follower of ISIS propaganda, uh,

social media, and frankly, uh, tactical instruction.

(Joon) Yeah, we'll take one more question. (Aside) Okay. This time,

do you believe (unintelligible) is involved in planning and carrying this out?

(Joon) At this time, all we have are the charges, uh, in the complaint,

and, and the, and the, uh, uh, the charges against this one individual. Thank you everyone.

(Aside) Thanks.

Acting USA Announces Charges Against Iranian National For Cyber Attack And Extortion Against HBO - Duration: 23:47.

Good afternoon. My name is Joon Kim. I'm the Acting United States Attorney for the

Southern District of New York. This summer, just

as the much anticipated 7th season

of Game of Throne was getting underway, HBO

found itself in a scary predicament,

one that unfortunately too many of our businesses, and

institutions have found themselves in;

HBO had become a victim of a malicious cyber attack.

A hacker had infiltrated its networks,

getting past the sophisticated defenses that HBO had in place,

and then had stolen massive quantities

of confidential information, and proprietary data.

Through anonymous emails, the hacker made his intentions clear,

demanding ransom of upwards of 6 million

dollars in Bitcoins. If HBO did not pay up,

he threatened to release stolen scripts,

plot summaries, and unedited episodes of HBO -

popular HBO shows. That was July and August.

Today, less than 4 months after that attack,

thanks to the tremendous work of the FBI

and the cyber prosecutors in our Office, we are here to announce

criminal charges against the alleged hacker;

and that is, uh, Bezhad Mesri - the man depicted

on this F - FBI wanted poster released today.

Mesri allegedly orchestrated his hacking

and extortion scheme from halfway around the world from Iran.

Mesri is an Iranian national, and as alleged,

is an experienced and sophisticated hacker who has been wreaking

havoc in computer systems around the world for some time.

Using the online hacker hand -

hacker handle 'Skote Vahshat', Mesri operated as part

of an Iranian hacking team, and he also allegedly conducted

attacks for the Iranian military, including

on other military systems, nuclear software systems,

and Israeli infrastructure. Mesri conducted

his attacks on HBO in a methodical way. First,

he conducted online recusance of HBO's networks

in the months leading up to July. Then, after

several attempts, he successfully compromised a number

of HBO employees' accounts, and used those accounts to gain access

to the system as a whole. Then, Mesri used his unauthorized

access over the course of several months to steal

confidential information, and proprietary data, ultimately transferring

it to a network - uh, to a server under his control

Mesri allegedly stole all types of secret information

that would be damaging to HBO if it were to be released.

He stole and scripts and plot summaries for unaired shows,

including the immensely popular Game of Thrones.

He stole videos of real, but yet unaired, episodes

of other original HBO programming, including: Curb Your Enthusiasm,

Ballers, and Barry - a new show

starring Bill Hader set to air next year. And he

also stole emails and financial data, and documents from HBO,

as well. After stealing all this proprietary data,

Mesri moved to the extortion phase of his scheme. He first

sent emails to HBO executives and email - and employees,

announcing the hack, and theft of data. As he put in in an email

on July 23rd, "I have the honor to inform you

that we've successfully breached into your huge network

in a complicated cyber operation, and we've obtained most

valuable information." He allegedly claimed that he obtained

1.5 terabytes of data. Acknowledging

his history in hacking, and crediting the quality of HBO's network

defenses, Mesri stated in another email, "HBO

was one of our difficult targets to deal with." Mesri

moved on with a ransom deman, as I said earlier. First,

5.5 million dollars, subsequently increased to 6 million

in Bitcoins. If HBO did not make these payments,

Mesri threatened he would release the scripts and video files

of unaired HBO shows, and also threatened to destroy important data

on HBO servers. Showing a flair for the dramatic,

Mesri included in his emails iconic imagery from

the Game of Thrones. For example, he doctored

image - an image of the Night King character from the show in one of his emails,

and then after eventually posting some of the stolen videos

and data online, he added his own twist to the Game of Thrones

catchphrase. He posted online, an image of the Night King with the

phrase, "Winter is coming", and added his own ominous threat,

"HBO is falling." And these two - uh,

this visual shows the images

The first, he emailed - uh, allegedly emailed to HBO,

uh, with the Night King, and then this is, um,

the, the screen shot that he posted online

uh, when he leaked, um, the data, which says, "Winter is coming"

on this corner. On this corner, he has "HBO is falling."

Because Mesri is in Iran, we are

unfortunately unable to arrest him today. But Mesri

should know - and all other cyber criminals, and would-be cyber criminals

should know - that they're not safe behind

the anonymity of - anonymity of their computer screens, even if they're a world away.

If you hack our people, our companies, our

institutions, we will work relentlessly and creatively,

applying all the tools available to us to identify you,

find you, and charge you. And at some point - and it may not be right away -

we will arrest you, and bring you to justice.

While Mesri remains at large, there will be some real consequences

for him for the rest of his life, and he's a relatively young man

in his late 20s. He will be never be able to travel

outside of Iran without fear of being arrested, and brought

here to face these charges. Now let me be clear

to him and to the others. The memory of the American law enforcement

is very long. With the public announcement today,

we also want to deliver 2 other important messages to the public

generally. First, this is a reminder that

our country, and our businesses, remain prime targets of hackers

around the world. And today's charges make clear that nation

states like Iran routinely employ led

criminals - mercenaries like Mesri - to conduct network attacks

- network attacks in America, and elsewhere.

As alleged in the indictment, Mesri had engaged in cyber crime on behalf

of the Iranian military. And in this instance, he applied those

skills that he learned against HBO for personal profit.

It's worth noting that this is not the first time that our Office

working with the FBI, have called out the Iranian government for

hiring these kinds of alleged criminals as hackers.

Last, last March in a case called U.S. v. Ahmed

Fathi, we indicted 7 men working for

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard with conducting DDos -

or distributed denial of services - attacks

on dozens of American financial institutions, and for hacking into the control systems

of a dam in Rye, New York; the Bowman Dam.

And unfortunately, I suspect that this will not be the last

time we charge cyber offences against hackers with ties

to the Iranian government. The second message

is that these charges serve as a general reminder of the constant threat

of cyber crime we all face every day now.

individuals and institutions alike. No matter how vigilant we are,

and no matter how up to date we keep our network

security systems, persistent and skilled hackers

can find a way in. As Mesri himself admitted,

he found it difficult to penetrate HBO's systems,

but he ultimately did. So the message for private businesses

is this; when things go wrong, despite all your efforts to protect your systems,

the Government is here to help. We can help you secure your networks

in the midst, or immediately following a hack. We can

work together to investigate and take actions against cyber criminals,

and stop them from further damage to you, and to others. This public -

private partnership is absolutely critical to combatting

the ever growing cyber threat that is all around us. And in that regard,

I specifically want to thank and commend HBO for their prompt and

proactive cooperation with law enforcement. Their cooperation allowed us

together with the FBI to not only mitigate the damages,

but also to help bring the charges that we announce today.

To go from a cyber intrusion of this type, to criminal charges

against an Iranian hacker in less than 4 months, is an impressive feat

of law enforcement. It is only possible because of the expertise

and the commitment of the FBI, represented here today

by Bill Sweeny, Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office, and Ari Mehairas,

Special Agent in Charge of New York's Cyber Division.

Specifically, I want to thank and recognize Special Agents Daniel

Degulio, Mark Sherano, and Andrew Smulligan, as well as

their Supervisor, Wolf Mulger, for their excellent investigative work.

Of course, I want to thank and acknowledge the great prosecutors, uh, in my Office -

uh, some of them are standing over there, uh, on the other side of the

visuals - Tim Howard, Rich Cooper, and Jonathan Cohen,

as well as their Supervisors - as well as the Supervisors of the Complex Fraud

and Cyber Unit: Tim Howard being one of them, and Michael Ferrara, the other.

In the Game of Thrones, "Winter is coming" is

the motto of the House of Stark - the rulers of the North.

As you see in the indictment, Mesri allegedly uses

phrase to frighten HBO into meeting his extortion demands.

Well today, winter has come

for Bezhad Mesri. As of today, he stands charged publically

with Federal crimes in New York. As of today, he's a fugitive of justice.

As of today, his name and picture will go up on FBI's

most wanted list. He will forever be looking over his shoulder.

And if he isn't, he should be. These charges will follow him

wherever he goes until he's been caught and brought to justice.

American ingenuity and creativity is to be cultivated

and celebrated, not hacked, stolen, and held ransom.

Hackers who test our resolve in protecting our intellectual property

may think they are safe behind the anonymity of a screen name and a keyboard

in a country far away, but even for them, eventually

winter will come. Now I'm gonna hand - uh,

turn the podium over to Bill Sweeny.

(Bill) Thank you Joon, and good afternoon everybody.

Earlier this year, Bezhad Mesri, as alleged,

unleashed a cyber attack and extortion campaign against HBO,

attempting to shake them down for upwards of 6 million dollars.

As alleged, Mesri identified access, access points to

HBO's network, used unauthorized account information to gain virtual

entry into their server and steal intellectual property,

released some of the stolen information via the internet, and promoted his efforts via

the media, and via Twitter. In the simplest of terms,

he lurked in the alleyways of the internet, identified the vulnerabilities

of the victims, and pickpocketed their information from thousands

of miles away. After he had successfully identified

proprietary assets, he held their future for ransom.

The sad reality is, it could just as easily happened to one of us.

Whenever a player can use sensitive information for their own gain,

any one person or company can be a target. From our vantage point

at the FBI, we've recently seen an increase in hacking for extortion

cases across multiple industries.

Unhindered by national borders, perhaps sometimes emboldened by the

thought they can hide behind them, cyber criminals are uniquely

situated to win, while many of their targets are unwittingly set up to

lose. This needs to change. We put a great

deal of time and effort into securing the indictment today, as our overall goal

is to diminish the threat, and send messages that will change behavior.

We are looking to impose costs wherever we can.

That means, we will look to publically identify operators like this, with indictments.

We will seek civil actions to seize their computers,

and we will pursue sanctions with the Treasury Department. We will

also work with our Federal private sector, and global intelligent partners

as well, to obtain justice, and to use those

same national borders against you. While an individual indicted for

this type of behavior may not immediately appear in a U.S. courtroom,

other things are about to change. The ability to freely move

from country to country may be one of them. And to paraphrase one

of Mr. Mesri's emails, 'Good luck.' We have cyber

agents embedded with out international counterparts, in strategic locations worldwide,

helping to build relationships, and coordinate these

investigations. We have legal attachés, special agents

in more than 80 countries worldwide, covering 200 others around

the globe, including 20 special agents who are assigned specifically

to cyber issues. A decade or so ago, we

protected our personal information in a significantly different way.

We now live in a world where our entire lives play out online, making it increasingly

more difficult to safeguard our personal and corporate data.

We believe we can solve this problem if we work together to stay ahead of the cyber threat,

and adapt to the changing technologies. Today we believe is another

example of a step forward in that direction. Many thanks

as always to our partners here at the Southern District - to Joon, and your team:

to Chiefs Tim Howard, Michael Ferrara, AUSAs Rich Cooper,

Jonathan Cohen, and Heather Alpeno from (unintelligible).

And last but not least, I want to extend my congratulations to our investigative team

here in the Cyber Division, led by Special Agent in Charge Ari Mehairus,

and Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Rich Jacobs. Your work, and your teams, has been

absolutely professional. Thank you very much.

(Joon) Thanks Bill. I'll take some questions [clears throat]. (Aside) Is there a sense that

he was working with the Iranian government during this attack, or it's just that

he had worked previously with the Iranian government? (Joon) The allegations in the

indictment are that he had worked previously with the Iranian government. Uh, I think the

allegations in the indictment also made clear that he was

doing this for the purpose of extorting, uh, HBO's money.

And so beyond that, I'm not gonna comment. (Aside) Um,

why did you unseal the (unintelligible) now? We're just waiting to see (unintelligible)?

(Joon) Um, that's a good question. It's, it's an issue

we face, uh, with many of these cases where we have identified,

uh, and able to charge, uh, people who are beyond our reach

at the time, um, with crimes. And this was one of those cases

where - as I said - we were able to relatively quickly identify him, and charge

him. And we had to make an assessment, um, uh, whether

there was, there was a realistic chance of actually getting him, um, and

[we] were luring him to a place where we could get him. Uh, and then

we waived that against, uh, the need, and the importance

of sending a message that we can and will - even when you are

uh, immediately beyond our reach - charge you,

uh, and make a public statement like this. And that was the balancing that we did,

and we decided this was the right time to do it. (Aside) So is it

allegiant we weren't alone on this half, but you

(unintelligible) with the Iranian government, and that they

of course would not budge? (Joon) I won't get into what we believe. I'll get -

I'll talk about what we allege. We've only alleged, uh, uh, this

one person of committing this offense. We do allege that he

says himself, - uh, in his emails - he used

the term "we". And we do allege that he had previously worked,

uh, with hacking groups in, in Iran.

Yeah. (Aside) The Washington Post, uh, reported yesterday that

prosecutors are being pressed, uh, to come out publicly

with charges of investigations involving Iranians. Uh, can you

tell us is that true? And if so, did that have anything to do with

the timing of these charges? (Joon) I saw that recording as well. Uh, when I saw it, we already

knew we were gonna be doing it, uh, today. Um, as I've said, we have

been thinking about this balance between, uh, whether we can

realistically get this person, verses, um,

the importance of making a public statement that we

brought these charges. And we made that determination that, uh,

we, we were not likely to be able to get him, and that we should go public with it. So that was

the decision that we made. (Aside) Um, is there any sense - (Joon)

that's your second, right? (Aside) - why (sorry) he, he attacked HBO specifically,

and Game of Thrones? Is this some sort of - is there a message

about American culture, or was it just opportunity? (Joon) There's no allegations about

whether there was a[n] other message other than the message he did deliver,

which is, he wanted money. (Aside) Just to - (Joon) yeah. (Aside) Um, so

according to the indictment, he started to do the recon in May,

and just started to gather stuff shortly thereafter, and then made the extortions

and demands in, uh, late July. After HBO first

became aware, did they try and shut down what he was doing,

or been working with law enforcement? Because it kind of like - okay, was he thinking

- to get him to, to do more (unintelligible)?

(unintelligible) do phone traces? (unintelligible)

(unintelligible) to Catch a Murderer. How'd that work out? (Joon) I'm not gonna go beyond what's in

the indictment, and that what I've already said, which is that we have - we thank

and commend HBO for their prompt, uh, uh,

reporting of this to the FBI. And as I've said, we

worked with them, uh, right away to help mitigate the damages, and to bring

these charges. So beyond that, I'm not gonna get into anything. Yeah.

(Aside) Uh, I assume they didn't pay any of his ransom.

(Joon) Um, again, without getting in, uh, to what's

beyond the allegations in the indictment. Um, you will see in the indictment that

there was a demand for 6 million - 5.5 million Bitcoins

that increased to 6 million Bitcoins. And then event - at some point, uh,

Mesri allegedly posting

uh, confidential proprietary material online. So,

uh, that's all I'm gonna say beyond, beyond - on that. (Aside) What do you say to companies now?

What's your advice to them about getting extorted like this, and whether or not

to pay? (Joon) Yeah. The advice - our advice would be, uh, to

reach out to law enforcement, and that we can work with them. Uh, and the FBI,

uh, is incredibly experienced and professional in this regard.

And we can walk through with them (the options), and discuss it with them.

(Aside 1) Mr. Kim? (Aside 2) Joon, will you take an off-topic question? (Joon) Sure. (Aside) Um,

when [clears throat], when you and Preet were colluding against the Turkish

defendants; um, is that sort of like, a thing, or, uh,

do have any response to the, to the Turkish, uh, (inaudible)? (Joon) Um, I assume that's a joke, uh,

[laughing] - (Aside) Uh, you tell me! (Joon) and it's a reference about - I think -

I believe it's a reference to, uh, the fact that, uh, it appears that

an investigation has been launched, uh, in Turkey, uh,

into me personally, and, uh, my precede - predecessor, Preet Bharara,

in connection with the prosecution we have on Reza Zarrab.

Um, I'm not gonna say much about that, um,

beyond, 'I've read that.' Um, I've also read

a reporting that there's belief, uh,

among some that our prosecution is being driven by

domestic Turkish politics. Uh, I've even read, uh,

statements made that, uh, our Office - the Department of Justice -

and our courts are - have been infiltrated by

gulanists. Um, needles to say,

uh, it's hard for you to - those claims are ridiculous, uh,

on their face. Um, anyone who knows (obviously) our Office, uh,

and the Department, and understands our justice system, I

would recognize, uh, those ridiculous claims. Um, and frankly,

it displays (unintelligible) a fundamental misunderstanding,

or lack of understanding of how our system of justice works,

uh, and frankly, the rule of law works. Uh, this case - our case

of prosecution, uh, that's going on, and will be starting next week in

the courthouse, uh, was brought, and will be continued

to be brought and prosecuted by career prosecutors, by career

FBI agents, and investigators, who are driven by nothing other than

uh, following the law, uh, and the evidence, and, and

enforcing American laws. They're not driven by

Turkish domestic politics. They're not gulanists. Um, they're brought

for the simple reason that these defendants allegedly committed U.S. crimes.

And the defendants are charged with serious crimes. Um,

they've - they're alleged to have used the U.S. (unintelligible) system

to, um, to transact hundreds of millions of dollars

with Iran, knowing that it was being done to evade

uh, Iran sanctions. Uh, they are charged with money laundering, they are charged with

bank fraud. These are crimes that are important to this country, and go to the national

security of this country. These defendants' conduct allegedly

was a big hole in the Iran sanctions regime. And that's why

uh, the case, uh, is being brought, and that's the only reason.

Uh, and beyond that, um, I'll let the evidence

uh, at the trial speak for itself. One more question. (Aside) Mr. Kim, for the, for the FBI

in terms of - in this case, in terms of the actual difference that

this is gonna make in Mesri's life since he can't be extradited? What

will change in his life as a result of being - facing these charges?

(Bill) One of, one of the simple of those things that'll change is, he's gonna have to think about

where he wants to go, and where he wants to stay for the rest of his life. Other than that,

you know, we're willing to help him get back here, but he's stuck.

(Aside) So, so - (Joon) Alright. Thank you very much.

Ability360 starts Wheelchair Curling program for 2018 - Duration: 1:36.

- Ready?

Hi, I'm Tracy, we're here at the Coyote's Curling Club

in Tempe, Arizona, site of the Ability360

wheelchair curling league.

Let's go inside.

(upbeat music)

- In two sentences, hmm.

It's when you take a dumbbell,

and you do one of these.

So wheelchair curling is a paralympic

and Olympic winter sport.

It's played on ice similar to an ice hockey rink,

and there's this big rock that you push down

and you try to get it right in the middle

of the circle, which they call the house.

And you try to get as many rocks

around the house as possible,

and your rock's in, their rock's out.

- All right, so I've been curling for over 35 years,

and I've yet to get bored with the game.

Soon as I think I've got the game licked

or aced, I'll meet somebody who's curled better

you know, longer than me or who's better than me,

say Darryl why don't you try this shot,

I'll be like, I didn't even know it was an option,

so because of that, the game has never

outgrown me at all, and I challenge

you to get bored with this.

This is really a game you can play

for your entire life.

- Really hope you join us for our curling league

that starts Wednesday, January 3.

It's gonna be a great time here

at the Coyote's Curling Club.

- We'll be hosting a wheelchair curling tournament

on Saturday, February 24 and the 25.

Delusional Trump Takes Credit For Ending "War On Christmas" That Never Existed - Duration: 3:37.

Christmas 2017 is officially over, and if you're like me, I'm sure you obviously noticed

that Christmas this year was quite different than usual.

In fact, Christmas this year was obviously better than it's been in the last eight years,

because we were once again able to say "merry Christmas," and it is all because of the efforts

of Donald Trump, the President of the United State.

Of course, none of that is actually true.

However, that did not stop Donald Trump on Christmas Eve from tweeting out the fact that

he personally and single-handedly ended the fictitious war on Christmas, and people are

now saying "merry Christmas" again, and it's all because of him.

Now, according to Donald Trump and Republicans, and Fox News has been doing this even since

the Bush administration against liberals, there is no war on Christmas.

Let's get that straight, but all of these conservative outlets say that there has been,

say that liberals are making it to where they can't say "merry Christmas," you have to say

"happy holidays."

And before we continue, let's just point out the fact that "happy holidays" is not said

so as not to offend anyone, it's said in order to include everyone.

"Merry Christmas," obviously, would typically only apply to people who celebrate Christmas,

and as we all know, not everyone on the planet does.

So if you say, "happy holidays," you got all your bases covered.

You don't have to differentiate your happy greeting towards someone based on what you

assume their religious beliefs or holidays beliefs to be.

You say "happy holidays" you're good to go.

But Donald Trump tells us that Barack Obama never said "merry Christmas" during his eight

years in the White House, and as a result the rest of the country was also not allowed

to say it.

But, in fact, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, every single year, did say "merry Christmas."

In fact, they did it on video.

They did it where people could hear it and document it and go back and find it if the

need ever arose.

Have a very Merry Christmas.

We want to say Merry Christmas to everybody.

A very, very merry Christmas and a holiday filled with joy.

I want to wish every American a merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas, everybody.

Merry Christmas.

So merry Christmas, everyone.

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas, everybody.

Merry Christmas.

[inaudible 00:02:30].

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas, everybody.

Merry Christmas, everybody.

Merry Christmas, everybody.

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas.

So don't buy in to Donald Trump's BS that he has somehow saved Christmas, okay?

He did not wake up on Christmas morning like the Grinch to find out that his heart had

grown two sizes.

He did not get visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve and wake up Christmas day with

some kind of new found love of life and humanity.

He is the same disgusting old pervert that we've seen all year long.

Nothing's changed, and now he's even taking credit for ending a war on Christmas that

never actually existed.

Toffs nude swimwear complimented her bronzed glow and showcased her eye-popping silhouette.

"Camp maintenance is a little colder in the mountains than in the jungle! Still in my bikini though" Georgia Toffolo The bikini top plunged deeply at the front and offered up every inch of Toffs mind-boggling assets.

Meanwhile, the pants only highlighted Toffs teeny waistline and shapely pins. The bombshell kept her hair in a high ponytail as she threw her head back and chuckled.

Camp maintenance is a little colder in the mountains than in the jungle! Still in my bikini though, she captioned the scorching hot image. Toff was in Verbier, Switzerland where she was filming a mystery segment for This Morning.

It was announced that Toff would be joining This Morning as a presenter in January following Rylan Clark-Neals departure.
