German Carmakers Paid For Studies That Tested Toxic Fumes On Humans And Monkeys

Three top German automakers are under fire after reports that they financed studies in which humans and monkeys inhaled harmful gases, including nitrogen dioxide — a component of car exhaust.

The New York Times reported on the monkey study last week, citing a lawsuit Volkswagen owners filed against the automaker.

On Monday, German media described that study and another involving human subjects.

Volkswagen, BMW and Daimler, the owner of Mercedes, financed the group that commissioned the studies, according to the reports.

The since-dissolved European Research Group on Environment and Health in the Transport Sector commissioned the tests, which took place in Germany and the United States.

According to the Times, the EUGT received all its funding from the auto companies.

In one of the studies, at Germany's Aachen University in 2013 and 2014, 25 human subjects were exposed to nitrogen dioxide for three straight hours once a week, over four weeks.

The study noted that "among all nitrogen oxides, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is the most toxic one," but that it had obtained written consent from its test subjects and was approved by the university's ethics committee.

Like the study undertaken at Aachen University, the EUGT also commissioned an experiment that forced monkeys to inhale car exhaust in 2014, according to the Times' report.

At the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, researchers reportedly placed 10 cynomolgus macaque monkeys in airtight containers and fed them fumes from a running diesel Volkswagen Beetle to compare the fumes' effects to those from a 1999 Ford diesel pickup.

To keep the animals calm, researchers said they gave them cartoons to watch.

LRRI's president and CEO, Robert W.

Rubin, said in a statement to HuffPost that the study was ultimately derailed because LRRI's researchers didn't know that Volkswagen had rigged its vehicles to produce emissions that were cleaner in laboratory emissions tests than on the road ― a larger scandal that has cost the company billions and has resulted a seven-year prison sentence for a former Volkswagen executive.

Rubin said the study had in effect been "compromised" by Volkswagen's modified engine and it did "not meet our standards for peer-reviewed publication." "We understood that the EUGT organization was financially supported by automobile manufacturers, but we believed the goal of the study was to advance the scientific understanding of the effects of diesel fumes on our lungs, including the effects of new vehicle technologies that are designed to produce less pollution," he said.

The EUGT shut down last year amid controversy over its work, the Times reported.

There's been an outcry over the studies in the U.S.

and Europe, where on Monday the German government spoke out against the testing.

"These tests on monkeys or even people are in no ethical way justifiable and raise many critical questions about those who are behind the tests," Steffen Seibert, a spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, said at a news conference in Berlin on Monday.

All three car companies have distanced themselves from the studies and announced an investigation into EUGT's work.

The German government has also spoken out against the testing.

Christopher Berry, an attorney with the California-based nonprofit Animal Legal Defense Fund, told HuffPost on Wednesday that potential legal issues revolve around the engine used in the experiment.  Under the U.S.

Department of Agriculture's Animal Welfare Act, researchers are required to provide a detailed report of their precise activities involving animals to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

That means the researchers would have had to report that the engine being used in the experiment was rigged to release cleaner emissions, instead of what was reported, he said.

"Deviating from this protocol without approval would be a violation of the Animal Welfare Act," Berry said.

There's also the issue of the experiment appearing to have no scientific purpose since the engine was rigged to produce skewed results, he said.

Berry said his organization ― which files lawsuits to protect animals from harm and offers free legal assistance and training to prosecutors nationwide ― is looking into the case and that more needs to be done to strengthen laws that protect animals.

"Regulatory agencies like the USDA often do nothing at all or at best give those organizations a slap on the wrist," he said.

Google Maps The Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute in Albuquerque has defended its work with animals, saying it follows animal welfare laws.

Rubin defended LRRI's work with animals in a statement, saying that in addition to the lab being certified with the USDA, all of the facility's work involving animals is conducted under the supervision of an attending veterinarian to ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and its regulations.  "LRRI is committed to the humane and ethical treatment of animals involved in research," he said.

One critic of the lab and its work, however, is Dr.

Catherine Willet, director of science policy at The Humane Society of the United States, who expressed alarm not only over the experiment with the Volkswagen fumes ― which she called "absolutely pointless" ― but with the number of safety incidents reported at the facility in recent years.

Since March of 2015, the facility has been written up for eight noncritical incidents and five critical incidents involving animals, including dogs, pigs and non-human primates, according to inspection reports released by the USDA and reviewed by HuffPost.

When you're using somebody else's life, you need to carefully consider what it is that you're doing with that life. The incidents include employees failing to report medical issues, failing to provide proper medical treatment, failing to report procedure changes to the IACUC, and a beagle getting left outside overnight.

The arrival of Virgil van Dijk saw Liverpool finally add a commanding presence at the back, but he could still do with a similarly solid partner.

Dejan Lovrens issues are well documented, and though the Croatian has put in some decent performances on the right side of defence this season, the Man United game showed that big mistakes are always just around the corner.

Meanwhile, Joel Matip has also been struggling after an impressive debut season, and is yet to convince that he is good enough to partner Van Dijk in the long term.

Heres a look at some players who have the potential to form a partnership with the clubs record signing in the back line for years to come.

A long-time target for those who like a bargain, Van Dijk's compatriot has been heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan once his contract expires this summer.

With his reading of the game and passing ability, the Lazio man would be ideal to play in Liverpool's high line, joining in with the buildup play from the back.

He played in midfield during his time in the youth sides at VV Spirit in his hometown Ouderkerk aan den IJssel, which helps him retain his composure on the ball when stepping out from defence into the centre of the park.

Like Matip back in 2016 he would be a great option on a free transfer, and could even be an upgrade on the former Cameroon international.

While all the attention is on De Ligt's current Ajax partner Frenkie de Jong, the 18-year-old centre-back is going about his business in the usual accomplished fashion.

He is high on Barcelona's list of targets, as the Catalan club continue to monitor the two Dutchmen in the heart of the Ajax defence, having missed out on Davinson Sanchez last summer.

It goes without saying that he's good on the ball, having been developed at such a prestigious youth academy, but he also possesses deceptive recovery pace and can put in a tackle.

He'd need to bulk up for battles against the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Barnes, Salomon Rondon et al, but he's already showing signs of improvement in this area.

He's played on both sides of the defence, is similar in style to the next man on this list and could easily reach his level.

The Tottenham man has been one of the most impressive defenders in the Premier League since his arrival at Southampton on loan from Atletico Madrid in 2014.

Despite being born in Belgium, he is the third defender on this list to be schooled in the Netherlands, having made over 100 appearances for Ajax.

He possesses the ball-playing ability to go with the resolute defending for which he has become known during his time at Spurs.

Now 29, he is entering the prime years for a centre-back and will want a contract to reflect this, which has meant his future in north London is in doubt.

Judging on past performances in this division, he's exactly the kind of centre-back Liverpool would need, but they'd have to pay accordingly in wages, even if the transfer fee wouldn't be at Van Dijk levels.

If Liverpool were to sign a defensive midfielder in the mould of Wilfred Ndidi, then Gomez could come into his own on the right side of defence.

He's impressed for England on the right of a back three, and this appears to be his best position.

But with an anchor in between them, Liverpool's centre-backs could spread slightly wider, leaving Gomez free to roam into the right channel behind the full-back as he would in a three.

The World Cup could tell us more, but Jurgen Klopp and his staff will already know the strengths he possesses, and will hope that he's improved enough to be a serious option for the first XI by the start of next season.

The Stuttgart man is similar to Gomez when it comes to versatility, and he has played at right-back as well as centre-back in a back three and a four for two different managers at Stuttgart this season.

The 21-year-old Frenchman is a good all-round defender, and likes to look for a forward pass once he wins the ball back.

He is similar in style to the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and former Liverpool utility defender Alvaro Arbeloa, but his extra height at 61″ makes him more suited to playing centre-back than the Spanish pair.

He has a handful of assists from the right-back position, and has also played the odd game as a defensive midfielder for Stuttgart and for former club Lille.

Initially, he may be more useful as a backup player across the defence rather than an immediate partner for Van Dijk, but over time he could emerge as a mainstay in the Liverpool back line.

Nationality:. Long touted as one of the best and most promising centre-backs in Germany, now could be the time for Tah to begin to show his worth.

He's been compared to the likes of John Stones and Raphael Varane, and should he learn to use his considerable 64″ frame to complement his skills in other areas of the game, then he could be, like the Real Madrid man, the complete defender.

He still has plenty of improving to do but the potential is there, and he's already at a level where he'd get into the Liverpool side ahead of Matip or Lovren.

A truck driver is accused of ignoring warning signs and carelessly plowing across Peru's famous Nazca Lines on Saturday, causing significant damage to the estimated 2,000-year-old archeological wonder, authorities said.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site, which features massive geoglyphs of animals, plants and various creatures that are seen from the air, was left with deep tire marks when the big rig left the road.

The ancient designs surrounding the vehicle, which collectively cover 280 square miles, are touted on UNESCO's website as being "the most outstanding group of geoglyphs anywhere in the world and are unmatched in its extent, magnitude, quantity, size, diversity and ancient tradition to any similar work in the world."   According to Argentine newspaper Clarín, cited by NPR, the driver defended his action, saying that he wasn't familiar with the area and that he only left the road because of a mechanical problem.

The paper speculated, however, that he may have left the road in an attempt to avoid paying a highway toll.

One recent example of its ability to surprise was in 2014, when a pilot discovered previously unknown geoglyphs across the land after sandstorms unveiled them.

This wasn't the first time people have harmed the historic artwork, however.

In 2017, Greenpeace activists damaged some of the land when they pulled a publicity stunt in a protected area near an etched hummingbird figure.

That act involved placing giant letters across the land, spelling out a message for their organization.

  Simply walking on the land without special footwear will leave permanent scarring, the country's deputy culture minister, Luis Jaime Castillo, said at the time of the incident.

"They are absolutely fragile," he told the Associated Press.

"They are black rocks on a white background.

You walk there and the footprint is going to last hundreds or thousands of years.

And the line that they have destroyed is the most visible and most recognized of all."    .

We've been blocked for ten months.

I remember, at the start it was not nice to be blocked.

We were worried.

We felt there was an entity in the state

that is out to get us,

that there is an entity in the state,

that doesn't want people to read what we're publishing.

This is of concern.

It could start with being blocked,

but only god knows where it could go from there.

I remember in the first meetings following the block,

there was a general feeling of unsafe.

At the time and until this moment,

there hasn't been an official decree saying

that this website is blocked

for whatever reason.

Nor were we notified of being blocked.

Nor were we notified with whom is blocking us.

I'm Heba Afifi.

I'm a journalist at Mada Masr

writing on politics and society.

Our reaction as a team to being blocked

has ups and downs according to events.

At the start, there was a shock

and fear from many people

on whether we would be able to deal with this.

But with time, and given the fact

that the norm in Egypt for websites to be blocked,

as we are among 400 websites,

so if you're not affiliated to a large organization,

or a state run organization,

then you're blocked.

It's a blocked sphere in general.

It often happens that they block

one of the techniques we're using

so we find another technical solution.

It's like a cat and mouse game.

This is an nice thing.

The experience of course is not

There was a sense of defiance.

and will see how we deal with the block,

because we are convinced of what we are doing.

It strengthened the ties between the team.

It made us get to know each other better.

It made us get to know ourselves more.

It brought abilities out of us,

that maybe we wouldn't have

been able to bring out in normal circumstances.

It made us like the Egyptian Football team.

There is a myth of some sort,

that is known to Egyptian football supporters,

that the Egyptian player performs under pressure.

That when we play small teams,

there is a chance of us losing.

But where we play big teams,

we excel and play really good matches.

We found this to be a good game,

with an unknown player,

that is blocking us and our ability to reach people.

So we excelled under pressure.

Each of us brought out their inner

Hadari and their inner Salah,

and played a good match.

Till now, I think the score is in our favor.

We're doing well and we're still effective.

So we should actually thank the blocker.

Hailing the importance of Roberto Firminos all-round game Joe Gomez was effusive in his praise of the Liverpool striker, and how hard he is to mark.

Firmino has established himself as one of the most accomplished No. 9s in European football since taking up his new role under Jurgen Klopp.

Previously a hardworking, ghosting No. 10, Firmino was described by the New York Times Rory Smith on Monday as the most-complete modern centre-forward in the world..

Gomez is relieved he is more often than not on the same side, as describing Firminos approach to LiverpoolFC. com the defender highlighted his touch and tenacity as key assets.

He never has a bad touch, the ball always sticks to him however you ping it at him, he explained.

It's nice when you're playing the pass but when you're defending against him and he doesn't give you even half a yard to get there, it makes it hard.

On Firminos relentless off-ball work, and how to counter it, Gomez simply said the only thing you can do is hope you get a foul.

Bobby keeps going and keeps going throughout the game. He loses it and will track back deep into our half to get it back, he added. It shows his desire to try and win the ball back and defend for the team.

Gomez also revealed how the Liverpool squad embrace his creativity, despite the risk of his no-look finishes, and highlighted him as one of the most popular players at the club.

He works so hard for the team as well, everyone knows that and it's why he's liked by so many people—because of the effort he puts in. Regardless of the game, he always gives 100 percent, he continued.

Even if he didn't score as many, his contribution to the team brings the rest of our attacking players into positions where they can score.

Everyone is happy for him because he's showing he can do it all, and he's not losing the other parts of what he does. It's nice to be on a team with someone with so much quality..

Smiths suggestion that if Robert Lewandowski were to head to Real Madrid this summer Bayern Munich would be interested in Firmino sparked fear among Liverpool supporters.

But there should no cause for concern, with Firmino settled on Merseyside and flourishing in his focal role under Klopp, terrorising Premier League defences.
