GOP Rep's Office Got A Student Suspended For Cursing While Asking For Gun Control - Duration: 4:07.

GOP Rep's Office Got A Student Suspended For Cursing While Asking For Gun Control

10k   100.

A Republican congressman sparked outrage after his office had a student suspended from high school.

The reason?  During a brief phone call, the teen had the temerity to use a four-letter word while advocating for gun control.

As students around the nation left class for 17 minutes to protest gun violence last week, Noah Christiansen called the office of Rep.

Mark Amodei (R-Nev.), the Washington Post reported. The junior at Robert McQueen High School in Reno, Nevada, told the staffer who answered the phone that lawmakers need to "get off their fucking asses" to pass gun control laws.

More specifically, the student asked Amodei to back raising the minimum age for buying guns and banning "bump stocks," which allow semiautomatic weapons to fire more like automatic weapons, the Nevada Independent reported.   The aide who took the call apparently didn't appreciate the sentiment.

Someone from Amodei's office then called Christiansen's school, and officials there gave him a two-day suspension.

According to the Independent, he was also barred from taking on his elected role as class secretary-treasurer.  Christiansen said he could've expressed himself differently.

"I'm smart enough to use better words than, of course, the f-word," Christiansen told the Independent.

"But at the same time, even if I do want to use words, and use them over and over again, it's my right to do so." Christiansen also said he shouldn't be punished for it.  "Being yelled at for calling my representative and trying to create change in the world is one of the worst feelings I've ever experienced," Christiansen told the American Civil Liberties Union.

"I've never even had a detention before, let alone a suspension."  The organization blasted Amodei's office for "unconstitutional retaliation" against the student.  "The retaliation by Congressman Amodei's office is a betrayal of the First Amendment and of the representative process," ACLU of Nevada Executive Director Tod Story said in a news release.

"Nothing this constituent did was illegal, and we hope Congressman Amodei would be as interested in the opinions of students as anyone who seeks to 'petition the government.'" Amodei, a gun rights advocate, told the Los Angeles Times he had no apologies for the teen.

"Welcome to the world where words have impact," he said.  The congressman's words also appeared to have had some impact.

Christiansen told the Times he'll be old enough to vote in November, and he won't be voting for Amodei.     .

It's the Magical Time for Network Marketing - Duration: 3:11.

See the thing that most people don't understand about Network Marketing right

now is how early it is. It's super, super, super early. Yeah, we're doing almost

200 billion dollars in combined revenue around the world. Yeah, there's a

hundred million people involved, you know, part-time or full-time around the world.

Mostly part-time, but it's so early. We've been around and we've gone through

evolution, but here's what's happening now. One, the products are growing up. Lazy

products are not really working in the marketplace. So, the products are getting

better and better and services getting better and better and better. Two, the

companies are taking their games to another level.

Branding wise, service, support technology. Three the distributors in Network

Marketing are deciding to become professionals. There's more people today

that consider themselves Network Marketing professionals than any other

time. And I personally believe that this generation, this one right now. When I

mean generation, people are getting involved in this profession

right now. This is going to be the generation that creates the most wealth

per distributor that gets involved. More than people got involved before because

the profession kind of wasn't ready and more than the future. Because in the

future, more people, it's going to be more popular. It's gonna be more widely

accepted. It's gonna be more understood, but today it's this perfect blend of

professionalism, upscale, improved practices, improved standards and

training and mindset and strategy, but still virgin territory. It's literally

like there's beachfront property that is unclaimed. That a person could just come

in and say they put their their flag into the beach and say I'm gonna be a

Network Marketing professional and they get to own that beach and it's

appreciation from that point forward. But there's gonna come a time when that

beachfront property is going to run out and people

are gonna have to move back one row and back one row and they're not going

to get as much return as they're gonna get right this moment. This is a magical

time for Network Marketing, but those who see it, those who take advantage of it,

those who take action during this time and I really think this time is five or

ten years. The next five or ten years. More wealth being created per capita

inside of the Network Marketing profession than any ten-year period in

its entire life. Hundreds of years from now. Still they'll look back at this

little moment as the perfect moment to get involved, but they have to see it and

they have to take action.

Pet Fox Is Put Down By Authorities For The Most Infuriating Reason Imaginable - Duration: 5:38.

It's unfortunate, but exotic pets are becoming quite trendy these days, and in many places,

they're even legal and regulated!

Despite this, most of these types of pets must be kept a secret.

After all, it's dangerous, and likewise, illegal—to care for an animal that is not

domesticated.

It's still taboo even in places that allow exotic pets, and there are good reasons why.

The owners of a sweet silver fox learned this the hard way, after an anonymous caller reported

them to animal control.

Sadly, the situation escalated in ways they never would've imagined.

Tara Hiatt lived in Minot, North Dakota, with her husband, Eric.

The happy couple were married in May of 2013, and shortly after, they decided to adopt a

pet.

They didn't choose just any four-legged companion, though.

Tara and Eric decided to adopt Vader, an adorable silver fox!

He actually looked like some sort of unusual breed of dog.

Even better: he had the personality of the most affectionate puppy too!

Despite the controversy surrounding exotic pet ownership, "exotic" wasn't necessarily

the right word for Vader.

He "was bred specifically for his tameness and affinity for humans," Tara wrote on

the fox's popular Tumblr page.

Vader was kept as a house pet, and he was loved by his owners just as much as any other

traditional or conventional pet, like a dog or a cat would be.

Thankfully, pet foxes are legal in North Dakota, so the town didn't have any issues with

the couple owning one.

Vader even had a best friend: Athena, the couple's chihuahua!

Since the little fox couldn't leave his home except when absolutely necessary, Vader's

house really was his entire world.

Ever since he was first brought into the Hiatt family as a kit, Vader lived a happy, comfortable

life.

Not everyone in the neighborhood approved, but that didn't stop the Hiatts from caring

for Vader like any other pet.

Like any pet, Vader required regular checkups with the veterinarian.

Other than that, Tara said, he rarely left their house.

He could've gotten into danger, or been harmed if not in Tara and Eric's sight for

too long, so they kept him close.

Vader didn't seem to mind hanging out indoors, though!

He was safe, warm, healthy, and happy—and that was all that mattered.

He even got to dress up and ham it up for the camera!

Vader had little in common with his villainous namesake, but Tara did joke that her little

ball of fur possessed a "mischievous dark side."

And while she admitted that owning a fox was a challenge to her, it was worth it.

That's why it was a shock when Tara started to receive anonymous, and strongly-worded—messages

threatening to report Vader as a vicious animal.

Tara was stunned, but since there was no evidence of him posing any sort of threat, she didn't

think she had anything to worry about.

Vader was harmless and he'd never had an incident.

Then one night, animal control officers and local police showed up at the family's door.

Without a warrant, they tried to take Vader from the home.

Apparently, the officer disregarded instructions on how to properly handle Vader, and the terrified

fox nipped at him.

That didn't help Vader's case; officers told Tara they'd received an "anonymous

bite report".

Considering the fact that Vader never left the house, this seemed both unlikely and suspicious

to Tara.

Still, there was nothing she could do, and he was taken to an animal hospital.

Vader was in new and frightening surroundings, but the staff at the animal control center

reported that he wagged his tail whenever they fed him.

He was also very friendly with everyone who interacted with him.

Still, Tara was utterly heartbroken.

She made calls to the North Dakota Board of Animal Health, the Department of Health, and

the local police department.

"Had the police simply asked me to remove Vader from the city, I would have gladly done

so," she said.

All three of the agencies Tara contacted assured the worried owner that, because there was

no proof of punctured flesh in the reported incident, Vader would be safe from harm.

The authorities claimed that Vader was simply being held temporarily in order to make sure

that he wasn't exhibiting any signs of contagious diseases.

At the time, it may have seemed like a perfectly reasonable explanation, until it all went

wrong.

Mere hours after that conversation, and despite everything that Tara had been told , the police

showed up at her door with Vader's collar in hand.

Then, they delivered heartbreaking news: Vader had been euthanized.

Tara was devastated.

"Vader gave me a drive and a purpose in my life that I had never had before.

I loved him like he was my child," she said.

"Our house is quiet, and our baby is gone. There is nothing heavier than the empty collar that

sits in my hands".

As it turned out, Vader had been euthanized without as much as a hearing and without proper

medical screening.

The owner hadn't even received a warning before the authorities went through with it.

It all seemed like poor communication.

Tara was not going to give up.

She launched a petition to appeal Vader's case.

She also kept his Tumblr page active "as a tribute to him and to answer any questions

potential fox owners may have," she wrote.

While Tara and Eric couldn't undo the pain they suffered, at least they could relive

Vader's memory.

It seemed like a tragic situation that could have been prevented with better communication.

2019 CCCC Call for Proposals - Duration: 4:37.

Hello, I am Vershawn Young, the 2019 Program Chair

For the Convention on the Conference on College Composition and Communication

In 2019, the Convention will be held in Pittsburgh,

the home of great performances.

Some people know, but some don't know, that Pittsburgh is the home of the great August Wilson,

one of the greatest playwrights ever to live.

Some people know, but some people don't know,

that August Wilson draws on an Appalachian influence

What Frank Walker from the University of Kentucky calls Affrilachia influence.

In order to highlight the African influence in the Appalachian Trail.

I'm inviting you to join me in Pittsburgh so that we can show up, show out,

and theorize performance-rhetoric and performance-composition in all that we do

in reading, writing, speaking, listening, visually representing, and digital composing.

I hope that you will submit a paper, a panel,

an ensemble, a performance, or something else creative,

intellectual, innovative, and risk-taking for the 2019 Conference.

For more on performance-rhetoric and performance-composition,

listen to some of my friends.

Performance is a critique of the academy.

Performance is opposition to standardization.

I love performance because

Performance is embodied knowledge.

The academy does not like anything that cannot be precisely measured and replicated.

And that's especially why I love the idea of performance

in the discipline of rhetoric, composition, and literacy studies.

I'm thinking about performance-composition

and performance-rhetoric and what they mean to me

I think the easiest way for me to sum it up is to say

that when I studied a group of 189 students at Stanford for five years,

over and over again I asked them

about what good communication, good rhetoric, good writing, good composition was

and over and over again they said

It is something that makes something good happen in the world.

It is writing, composition, and rhetoric that gets up off the page,

off the screen, marches out, and does something good.

Makes something happen.

It is active. It works.

So that, to me, is composition-performance, composition-rhetoric.

I think performance-rhetoric gives us,

as scholars and teachers, a unique opportunity.

Because it allows us to hear diverse voices and literacies

that have been unfairly silenced

by racism and classism in our society.

In the two-year college, a lot of my students love hip-hop

and they want to interact with hip-hop

They bring vast amounts of knowledge

of hip-hop music with them and its history

to my classes here at Nova

And hip-hop, as students have pointed out,

offers us as listeners the chance to hear from marginalized voices

that have been silenced by society.

And recognize the richness

of hip-hop artists' literacies, languages, and knowledge.

Performance courageously courts unpredictability; so, it's risk-taking.

Performance envelopes activity with style; so, it's attention-seeking.

Performance recombines rhetorics' means and sensoria and inheritances,

chancing spectral composites.

Shouldn't we, then, insofar as carrying out this discipline's work,

invite, prime, and elicit performance more expansively?

Another shooting, another 17 dead

When will we stop counting?

When will we stop counting?

Another shooting, enough is enough

When will the blood stop?

When will the blood stop?

And I'm watching fearless children,

Walk right up to your door.

They look you in the eye,

And ask for something more.

You can send a hundred flowers.

You can say a thousand prayers.

You can make a difference, If you really care.

Ohio, you can buy a gun right here,

In Ohio, just like any other state.

Ohio, you can put it all on credit, For nothing, for nothing, for nothing

Ohio, you can make a difference now In Ohio, just like any other state

Ohio, you can watch the corn grow You can do something, for nothing

For nothing, for nothing

And I'm sure if it was your child, There would be no more guns.

I'm sure if it was yours, There would be new laws.

And I'm watching fearless children, Walk right up to your door.

They look you in the eye, And ask for something more.

Another shooting, another 17 dead, And we keep praying, never again,

Never again.
