Hey guys welcome back it's Veronica, in today's video I'm gonna be showing you
guys a really simple way to knit a hat, so let's just jump right into it. so the
first thing that you're gonna need are some knitting needles, I use size 11. and
they're eight millimeters then next year of course gonna need your yarn I used
one sheen and it was size super bulky now you might end up needing just a
little bit more depending on the size of your hat but I'd say I made mine fairly
big so I think you'd be okay with just one sheen so starting off you're going
to need about maybe a foot foot and a half of your yarn and you're gonna want
to fold it in half and tie a slipknot.
then you're gonna slip this on to one of your knitting needles and you're going
to cast on so for those of you who know how to cast on you can skip ahead
I'll have the timestamps down below but for those of you who don't know how to
cast on I'm gonna show you how to do that real quick so you're gonna start
off by taking your pointer finger and your thumb and you're going to stick
them in between the two strands of yarn so the yarn is gonna be on the outside
of your fingers and then you're going to use the rest of your fingers to grab the
rest of the yarn so that's how you're gonna hold it in your hand then you're
gonna take your knitting needle and you're going to pick up the yarn on the
outside of your thumb you're gonna want to go from the outside and come in with
your needle then once that's on your needle you're gonna want to go on the
outside of the other strand and you're gonna come in through the hole and then
you're gonna have another stitch so you're gonna keep doing this over and
over until you have as many stitches as you need on your needle so I'm going to
show you again real quick you pick up the outside from the thumb and then the
outside from the other finger and come through the hole the first time you do
this it might not quite make sense but after you do it a few times you just get
in the rhythm and it kind of becomes natural so now I'm just gonna
casting on and adding stitches to my knitting needle until I have as many as
I need this is going to be the length of your hat so I think I went with 30
stitches and that made my brim of my hat fold over quite a bit so I maybe suggest
doing 28 stitches maybe even 26 depending on how much you want your hat
to fold over but if you want to follow this exactly in this video I did 30
stitches.
so that when you're finished you'll still have your two strands of yarn one
which is your tail is going to be the one not attached to the ball of yarn and
that's the one you're not going to really want to do much with at all
you're not gonna want to knit with that or anything if you want you can even
maybe cut it a little shorter depending on how long it is and if you run out of
tail that just means you want to start with more yarn in the beginning when you
make your Slipknot so once you finish casting all of your stitches onto the
one needle then you're going to take your other knitting needle and we're
going to knit now I'm going to show you guys how to knit and then we're also
going to purl in this video so what you're gonna do is you're gonna take
your one needle and you're gonna stick it through the first stitch on the other
needle so it's gonna go under the stitch and needle and it's gonna come through
to the other side to form a "V" then you're gonna take your strand of yarn
connected to your ball of yarn not the tail and then you're going to wrap it
over the V.
then you're gonna bring your other needle back around and you're going to
push the yarn through the stitch to the other side so then you'll have a new
loop on the other needle then you're just gonna slide that last piece off of
the needle with all the stitches so you'll just keep doing this over and
over and that's how you knit so you want to make sure you bring that yarn through
the loop of the old stitch to make your new stitch and then slide it off
so now you're just gonna keep doing this until all of your stitches on the one
needle move to the other side.
so now normally if you were just knitting you'd keep doing this back and
forth moving the stitches from one needle to the other but in this video
I'm going to knit and purl so that we get that Ridge pattern on the Hat so the
real difference between purling and knitting is just basically how you stick
your needle through the stitch so with knitting you stick your needle through
the bottom side of the stitch and point it up but when you purl you stick your
needle through the upper side of the stitch and then it kind of points down
on the other side but then after that you basically do the same thing you
would when you're knitting you wrap your yarn over and pull it through the loop
and then the loop off of that old needle so let's go through it again real quick
you stick it through wrap your yarn over and then you pretty much just pull that
loop through the stitch and off of the other needle
so now you're just gonna keep doing this and you're gonna move all of your
stitches from the one needle to the other just like we did before
so then when we move over to the other side we're going to knit again so now
we're going to be going from the bottom side with the needle
so now we'll knit the whole row to the other needle and then you'll do the same
thing where you flip it around and then you purl again so you'll just be going
knit purl knit purl so every other one will be a purl stitch every other one
will be a knit stitch then just keep going back and forth
you can start to see your pattern forming then and you'll see that you
have a little bit of a rib in there that's because one row is knit and one
row is pearl so now you're just going to keep purling and knitting until you have
54 stitches total now you might want to make your hat a little smaller or bigger
depending on the circumference of your crown of your head I think the best way
to really find out what size fits your head is to just knit until you lay out
your whole work of yarn and then you can measure that and also measure around
your head when we're finished we'll fold this in half and then we're going to
cast off. so to cast off we're gonna first move
all of our stitches onto our other needle this way that strand of yarn that
you've been working with will be on the end of the needle so I forgot to mention
this earlier but you also are going to need either a crochet hook or a yarn
needle you can always just use your knitting needle but it makes it way
easier to cast off when you have a crochet hook so now once you did that
you're going to take your crochet hook or your knitting needle or whatever
going to use and you're gonna take two stitches and put it on to that then
you're pretty much going to lift the one stitch over the other and off of the
crochet hook so you're gonna keep picking up new stitches and moving the
old one over it.
and as you do this it will kind of form a little rib of its own and that's how
you cast off.
so then once you get to the end you're going to cut your strand of yarn and
then you'll pull it through that last loop now you can tie a knot so that it's
all secure and then I actually weave in my ends so you could just take your
crochet hook for that and weave in and you just cut and the tail into your work
so then once you're all finished you're just going to want to fold this in half
and then I actually measured it at this point to make sure that it would fit and
then you're going to pretty much so your two ends together so at this point it's
nice to have a yarn needle but I didn't really have that so I used that crochet
hook that I started out with so you're pretty much just going to go back and
forth moving the strand from one side to the other and just sewing this all the
way up.
in this video like I said I didn't have that yard needle so I actually did a
pretty poor job of sewing it all together I did do this in another video
and I explained and showed it a little bit better I'll link that either above
or below.
but you're pretty much just sewing together the two sides so now you can
cut that tie it off and weave that in and then you're going to want to pick
the nicer end for the room of your hat you know maybe something that looks a
little cleaner and more even then with the opposite end you're going to cinch
that up to make the top of your hats so we're going to use the crochet hook
again like I said the best way to do this really is if you have a yarn needle
and that's what I usually use I just could not find mine this day but to
weave this in I made a loop on the end of the yarn and I just pulled it through
with the crochet hook so I started where that seam was and then I pretty much
just pulled the yarn through the top rib stitches
and you'll want to just do this all the way around the Hat until you come back
to that seam.
then when you get to that point you're gonna take your two ends and you're
going to cinch them up to make the top of the hat nice and tight then you can
tie those two ends together tightly and then you can cut them off and weave them
in if you want otherwise this is the inside of the Hat so you really don't
have to worry about it too much and there you have a simple beanie
now I rolled mine over quite a bit like I mentioned since I did do 30 stitches
when we started my hat was actually quite long so it could be a slouchy hat
or you could just roll it over or if you want you know you cannot do 30 stitches
you can start up with 28 or 26 or even 24 I think would work and if you do that
then you'll of course have more yarn to work with so now taking the extra yarn
that I had I am going to make a poofy top part for the Hat so to make this all
you're going to need is your hands and your yarn so you'll take your yarn and
you'll just wrap it around your hand until you don't have any more yarn then
you're going to slide it off and try and pinch it in the middle and then with a
spare piece of yarn you're just going to tie a little knot in the middle now with
those extra strands you're gonna want to keep those a little long because that's
how we're going to attach the pom-pom to the top of the Hat and then the last
thing you'll have to do is take a scissors and you're just going to cut
the two sides of the pom-pom so now you can kind of pull it all apart and then
you can kind of trim it up with your scissors if you want the more trimming
you do the more even and thick it's going to look but then it's also going
to be smaller so you can maybe wrap this around something bigger than your hand
and then you have a bigger pom-pom and then you could kind of cut it down and
it wouldn't be so ragged and if you have more yarn to work with then you can make
a thicker bigger pom-pom as well so to attach this to the Hat all we're gonna
do is we're just going to stick the two little loose strands of yarn into the
inside of the Hat so you're gonna want to try and keep this pretty centered at
the top there's a little hole at the top of the Hat so you can comb the string
them through that and you're gonna want to string both pieces through and then
on the inside of the Hat you're just going to tie a knot and you can either
weave these ends in I didn't really I just tied a good secure knot
then I cut them off and then that's it so I hope you guys liked this video and
found it helpful, if you guys have any questions about anything you can always
comment them down below and I'll try to answer as many of them as I can.
