iClone Motion LIVE DIY Helmet for iPhoneX Face Motion Capture - Duration: 8:52.
okay today I'm going to briefly introduce
this DIY helmet for face motion capture
the helmet is composed of a few different parts
in the front we use a Xiaomi selfiestick-tripod
we choose this selfiestick because
the clamp at the tip can be rotated
so the moblie phone can be clamped in a vertical way
in front of our face
this selfiestick-tripod is also extendable
we will do a demonstration by wearing the helmet later on
in general, to capture the face
we only need to extend the first section of the stick
you can keep extending it
but all we need is the first section
the distance should be enough to cover the whole face in the app
if we look at front we will see some cable ties
to tie up things in place
to fix the selfiestick on the helmet
we choose this helmet because there is a hole in the front
the size of the hole is just about right to hold the selfiestick
also there are many open areas on the helmet
we will be able to use some cable ties
to simply fix it on the helmet
however this method is not a hundred percent stable
if you pull the selfiestick out with full strength
it could still come off the helmet
we can only try our best to fix it in place
to make it not loose
in the rear of the helmet
we can see a metal stand for flash lights
there is no specific reason for using this
it's just because its weight
since it is a piece of metal
so it's kindda heavy
we use the same black cable ties to fix it on the helmet
like this
make it stays on its place
for the sake of weight-balancing
it's not necessarily to use this thing
the best way is probably to use a mobile powerbank
and tie it to the back of the helmet
so that the powerbank can charge the phone
while doing the face motion capture
the weight-banlancing is not perfect at the moment
because the flash light stand is not heavy enough
we need more weight to get better balance
the ideal scenario is to add a powerbank to the back
we bought this helmet from one of Decathlon stores
it's a bike helmet
it's not necessary to use this specific helmet
any similar helmet will do
it's just that the way you fix stuff on the helmet could vary
in the back of the helmet
the tension is adjustable
there is a dial here
so we will be able to adjust the tension
depends on the shape of your head
because we all have different head sizes
this helmet might not fit perfectly onto some heads
it depends
if the head size of the mocap actor/actress
is relatively large or small
they might need a helmet of different size
let's start wearing the helmet
and do a simple field test
firstly we launch the app on iPhone
like this
3D mesh can be switched on and off
due to the way we rig the helmet
the iPhone needs to be clamped up side down
for the app to properly cover the whole face
let's use the selfiestick to clamp the phone to the front
and then wear it on the head
you will see the video on the phone is up side down
because of the way we clamped the phone
okay let's fasten the chin strap after wearing the helmet out
and adjust it a little bit
for placing our face in the center of the screen
like this...
also adjust the tension by using the back dial
okay it's about right
because the wieght-balancing is not perfect at the moment
the back of the helmet is not heavy enough
it tends to lean forward more or less
because the phone attached to the front is heavier than the weight on the back
let's adjust it slightly...
okay everything seems fine we can start doing some acting
it's stable...
let me rotate my head a bit
you can tell the phone follows the direction of my face
no matter how I rotate my head or where I go
my face always stay on the screen center
calibration is reqired
since the phone is placed up side down
I've launched Motion LIVE in iClone 7
we need to use "Set Zero Pose" function to calibrate the face
this way we can tell iClone Motion LIVE that
the phone is up side down
please treat it as normal state
to capture the facial expression
if we don't calibrate before capturing
let's see...
if we don't press "Set Zero Pose" button before capturing
the head of the character will lean sideways
like this...
because the phone is up side down
if we capture facial motion
after doing proper calibration (Set Zero Pose)
Okay the green light (in Motion LIVE) is on
then we start doing mocap
this way there should be no problem
the head of the character will not lean sideways
since the phone can always cover my face
no matter how I move or act
my facial expression is always being captured
