[JAZZ MUSIC PLAYING] Hello everyone
This is Dr. Jenny Wakefield bringing you today's
episode of Take Five. Today
we are going to take a look at Universal Design for Learning
– UDL. What is it?
and how did it come about?
There are a number of laws that form
the backdrop for UDL.
The first one is the Americans with Disabilities Act
– ADA.
This civil rights law outlaws
discrimination against qualified people on the basis of disability
on the basis of disability. There are
are five titles within the ADA. Title
II requires that programs,
service, and activities of state and local governments
are accessible to people with disabilities.
Barriers for access must be removed
for people with visible
and non-visible disabilities, according
according to Title II.
There are two sections of the Rehabilitation
Act of 1973 that are
of special importance for us in education.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
is a civil rights law that states that
individuals with disabilities shall not
be discriminated against
as a result of a disabling condition.
This law also incorporates reasonable work-
place accommodations for employees
with disabilities, access to
programs, buildings, and venues,
and effective communications with people
deaf or hard of hearing.
Section 508
specifies requirements for
for electronic and information tech-
nology communications
and how these are to be accessible for the public
public at large thus
not excluding people with disabilities.
In the Assistive Technology Act of 1998,
which was passed to increase access to
and availability of funds to
states to support individuals with dissabilites with
assistive technology, is where we
find the definition of UDL. This is
in Section 3. "A concept or
philosophy for designing and delivering products
and service that are usable by people
with the widest possible range of functional capabilities
which include products and services
that are directly accessible
(without requiring assistive technologies)
and products and service that are
interoperable with
assistive technologies."
Universal Design for Learning, is an approach
toward design, teaching, and learning that
maximizes learning for the largest possible audience.
UDL practices
allows learners equal access to learning
and learning materials by delivery of
learning and assessments in a variety of ways.
UDL practice supports
equity.
There are three pillars of UDL: The first
one is Multiple Representation.
Multiple representation involves providing
learning materials in a variety of ways:
For example, through large group
discussions as well as small group talk.
Though lectures and shared lectures notes.
Graphic organizers. Video
lectures with captions and podcasts
with transcripts. Textbooks chapters
provided with screen reading software.
Multiple representation also
includes providing materials
that allow an individual to change the media,
such as for example
videos that allow for enlarging the screen
Text that can be enlarged, color that
can be changed, and screen reading
software.
Multiple means to assess include
use of quizzes for review,
short answer questions,
fill in the blanks, essay questions,
projects and wikis, hands-on activities,
and manipulatives.
Each student comes from a different background, has
different needs, and abilities.
Providing students supportive learning though UDL
practice allows learners choice of ways
to learn and may contribute
to happier and more engaged students.
Thank you for taking 5
together with the Learning
Technology Team and Dr. Jenny Wakefield.
