new initiative.

This week, we are going to knock on 10,000 doors in every corner of this district.

I'm going to be doing a lot of this, but it's mostly being driven by our amazing group

of volunteers.

When I see this amazing group, hundreds of mostly young men and women who come and spend

a few hours of their day, their nights, their weekends, working with us, knocking on doors,

talking to voters, they are the true engine of this campaign and they inspire me so much.

This campaign is all about our team.

This campaign is all about our volunteers

We believe that we win with handshakes, with eye contact, with conversations.

This weekend we're going to be doing a day of action.

Coming this fall.

The Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, the Center for Health Equity and the Indiana

State Department of Health, Division of Chronic Disease, Primary Care and Rural Health invites

you to attend Accessible Health for All workshop.

Kaitlin Thompson: There are major health disparities for people with disabilities that don't exist

for people without disabilities.

Narrator: People with disabilities are more likely to lack knowledge about access to health

care and wellness centers and it is an overall contributing factor to poor health.

Physical barriers to accessing health care offices, places of business, exam rooms, and

health promotion centers limit accessibility and a sense of welcoming.

Communication that is not clear, and written materials that are not easily understood are

additional barriers for people living with disability and aging into disability.

Participants will learn to welcome and accommodate all.

Presenters include Peter Berg, Director of Technical Assistance for Great Lakes ADA Center.

Peter will talk about best practices for meeting the communication needs and styles of your clientele.

He'll provide insight on techniques for the front-line staff on accommodating people with

hearing, vision and intellectual disabilities.

Kim Paarlberg is an architect with the International Code Council.

Doug Goeppner is the ADA Coordinator for the University of Southern Indiana.

Kim and Doug will share strategies to make your health care facility more accessible

and compliant with the ADA.

They will also talk about common physical barriers to facilities and ways to keep your

patrons and patients returning year after year.

Renae Jackson: The majority of your doctors offices or your clinics or not accessible.

They don't have the tables that can be adjustable for somebody,

you know, with a disability.

They don't have scales in their offices that you can roll up on and be weighed, you know?

They have the old fashioned scales where you have to walk up on them.

A lot of them have the very narrow waiting rooms so you can barely get in there with

your wheelchair, if you have a wheelchair.

Kaitlin Thompson: There are also attitudinal barriers.

People who don't -- providers who don't have experience with people with disabilities may

be scared that what would be a routine procedure or routine exam for them to

perform on another patient, they've never done it on someone with a disability.

They may be hesitant or may turn you away.

Narrator: Hear first-hand experiences from local panel on some issues and experiences

they have faced in health care, health promotion and dental settings.

The panel will discuss mobility and accessibility, communication and interaction, and strategies

for a positive experience.

Attendees can earn continuing education units.
