Sky Sports pundit Paul Walsh predicts Liverpool's new-look defence for next season ● News Now ● #LFC - Duration: 2:05.

LIVERPOOL defender Joe Gomez will become one of the first-choice centre-backs at Anfield

next season.

That is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool striker Paul Walsh.

Gomez has become a regular at right-back for the Reds this season after two injury-ridden

years at Merseyside.

The 20-year-old has impressed and made his senior England debut against Germany as a

centre-back, coming on for the injured Phil Jones.

With Nathaniel Clyne still to return from injury, Walsh says Gomez will have more opportunities

in the centre of defence for Liverpool next term.

"I think next season Gomez will be a centre-half, one of the permanent ones I think alongside

one of the others," Walsh said.

"That's what I believe and then Clyne and Trent will be vying for that right-back

spot."

When hearing Walsh's opinion, his colleague and former Arsenal forward Paul Merson was

not too optimistic for Liverpool's title chances next season with a youthful-looking

defence.

"When you read that out like that and this is no disrespect to those young kids because

they're only young kids and it does take time, they're playing at a big, big football

club, one of the biggest in the world,"

"But it isn't going to win you the Premier League, it's not going to win you the Premier

League.

"I know it's a shame but when you're a big club like Liverpool, they don't need

five-years time.

"It's been 27 years now, they don't need 28, 29, 30, 31."

ANTONIO CONTE has refused to rule out bringing Bayern Munich star Arturo Vidal to Stamford Bridge.

The pair worked alongside each other at Juventus between 2011 and 2014, and the Chelsea boss has lauded the Chilean international.

  Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has claimed he would want to go to war with Arturo Vidal.

  The Bayern Munich midfielder has been linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge.

German news outlet Kicker claimed that the Bundesliga giants may sell the 30-year-old in the near future, leading to speculation the West London side could make a move.

Speaking after the Blues 2-0 victory over Brighton on Boxing Day, the 48-year-oldsaid: I don't speak about players from other teams' card.

I must be honest, its not right to talk about a player of another team.

Especially if you try to link this player with us.

But Arturo is a fantastic player, I have a great respect for Arturo, and we spent many years in Juventus together.

  The 48-year-old worked with the Chilean international between 2011 and 2014 at Juventus.

  Arturo Vidal is valued at around £53million by the Bundesliga giants.

If we go to war, I'd always want him with me.

Vidals contract at the Allianz Arena expires in 2019, and Bayern could cash in on the £53million rated midfielder.

Conte and Vidal won three consecutive Serie A titles together, as well as one Coppa Italia.

And since returning to Germany after a four-season stint with Bayer Leverkusen, he has won back-to-back league championships.
